Directv HDTV DVR to iMovie import

I just got a new HDTV DVR from my DirecTV service provider. Now that I have gone to HDTV, I now have true digital ports out of the DirecTV DVR Model HR10-250. The output is HDMI and a cable is provided to get it to DVI. How can I get this DVI or HDMI signal into my computer and ultimately to iMovie and iDVD. I have looked all over for conversion boxes or PCI cards for the computer, but everywhere I look companies only offer Analog (composite or s-video) to Firewire converters that do the same as my DV Camcorder. I am looking to eliminate the Analog to digital process where the quality is degraded. If there is no such device does anyone know of a Component to Firewire device as Component analog is still better than s-video.
Before I got the HDTV I had an older Standard definition DVR from DirecTV and was able to build DVD copies of what I recorded by outputing the DVR through the s-video port into my DV camcorder. It converted the s-video to DV which I imported to iMovie for editing and then iDVD for DVD generation. It is a tedious process but it does work. The video quaility is reasonable but not as good as the orginal.

You can get a Intensity pci express card from Blackmagic which will allow you to get you HDMI uncompressed video into the computer. That is if it is not stopped by copyright issues. If the HDMI is not compressed you will need a raid drive set up with at least 2 drive to capture uncompessed HD. If it is in a MPEG 2 form you probaly can import it to your drive directly using their Decklink program. It will get stored I believe as a Quike View file and you can trag it into IMovie HD. Hope this helps.

  • Video Import - DirecTV HD/DVR

Does anyone have a suggestion on how-to import video from a DirecTV HD/DVR (HR 21) to a MacBook Pro? I see that Dazzle makes a product, but I found the quality of their hardware seriously lacking in the Windows world.
(The DVR has an RCA and HDMI output.)
    Thanks in advance!

  • 1080p HDTV only receiving 720p signal thru HDTV DVR

I just installed a second HDTV DVR via a 1,000 Mhz 2-way splitter.  Everything works fine except the new VIZIO 1080p HDTV is only receiving a 720p signal from the HDTV DVR.  The VIZIO TV auto senses the incoming signal so there is no setting on the TV I can change.  My other HDTV is still receiving a 1080p signal.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Thanks so much.  That did the trick.  I thought I had scrolled through all the menu settings options before but somehow missed the one I needed.  Thanks again.

  • DVR to Imovie to edit to burn DVD

Goal - To post my 2-5 minute TV segments on my website. I need to edit an hour show to my 2-5 minutes, burn DVD's and convert to post on website. I thought I would record a DVD (need to get a DVD recorder) from the DVR, convert it to an MP4 and download it into Imovie to edit but an hour show takes days to download.
There must be a quicker way. Can I download directly from the DVR into Imovie? Use my DAC to convert or buy Quicktime Pro to edit and burn an edited DVD?
I don't mind spending a little money for ease as I am technically challenged. I would greatly appreciate anyone's advise.
    Thank you.
    I have:
    Dish DVR 722
    Dac Converter
    MAC OS X 10.5.3
    Imovie 5. and 8.

I'm not familiar with DVRs, but the well reputated Streamclip offers support for downloading via firewire from some DVR-like devices...
for converting the files, you probably need the 20$ Apple mpeg2-playback-plug-in....
hope, that is a little help...

Use iMovie > Help on your Mac or here -> http://support.apple.com/kb/PH2153
Treat the "sd card on the desktop" as a connected hard disk.

  • Deleted video shows up in the iMovie import window

    Hello,
I recorded a video with my iphone 5 which I have since deleted. Every time I connect my iPhone to my Mac and open iMovie import window, the deleted video shows up. How can I permanently delete the video so, that it will be no longer visible in the iMovie iMoore window nor any other place?
    Thanks in advance

I have noticed the exact same issue. I have an iPhone 5s running iOS 8 (latest update). There are about 8 videos I've made and subsequently deleted over the last nine months. They do not appear in Photos. They are not offered as downloadable when connected to the iMac with iPhoto running. However, if I connect the phone to the iMac with the iMovie application open (on the iMac, running Yosemite), then iMovie offers to import all of these supposedly deleted videos! I just want to reclaim whatever space is being taken up by these.
I have tried resetting the iPhone to factory settings, but when it syncs with iTunes and restores from backup, the videos return. How do I delete these videos?! Anyone?

  • No Video Images Appear In iMovie Import Window

My Vixia hv 30 mini DV is connected and recognized, and when I choose to import video manually, and hit the iMovie Import button, the video plays on the camera screen but not in the iMovie import window on my iMac. Nor does the counter move, although a large message in the iMovie window says "importing". The camera's counter in the upper right hand corner of the window counts off, but not the counter next to the controls at the bottom of the window. A file name is created in the Event Library, but there is nothing in the file when I click it.
I have tried importing segments of all sizes and lengths to see if there was an issue there but no video appears on the iMovie screen, and there is no message that thumbnails are being created.
I have watched tutorials online to see if I am missing something but I have found no answers. I was able to import a one-minute segment automatically a few days ago when I first got the camera, but now Automatic does not work. It begins to import, with no images appearing in the iMovie import window and no movement in the counter, then after a few seconds the "Importing" message changes to "Stopped"
In my 'Save To" window, it says I have "5.7GB free/25 min.)" on my Mac's HD.

I found that this was due to my tape having been recorded on an older DV camcorder rather than an HDV. You'd think either iMovie or the Canon Vixia would simply tell you that in plain language, rather than give you the kind of cryptic meaningless message that the camera displays.
If you have this problem, go into the camera menu and make sure the format —DV or HDV— matches the content on your tape.

  • IMovie imports 4:3 as 16:9

Anyone had this problem? I am importing non-HD DV from a camcorder shot in a 4:3 aspect ratio. iMovie imports as 16:9 so it looks stretched. Any ideas how that may be fixed?

yes, it is not an answer, just another aspect of this problem which I encountered.
I am using iDive to import and archive my clips. The ones I mentioned were all within one batch that I imported without interruption from one tape. The files were then imported as a file import into '08.
Maybe it is a flag problem but, as said, some were handled correctly, others not.
I tried these files with the following other programs too, which processed them in the correct ratio:
    iDive
    Quicktime
    iMovie 06
    Norrkroos Movie
    FCE
This is why I tend to believe, it may be more than just a plan settings problem, thus my addition.

    '''''"... I have about 20 bookmark folders and about 100 bookmarks altogether. " '''''
Firefox doesn't store bookmarks like that, sound like a Windows / IE favorites scheme used for '''''url''''' files and folders which isn't directly compatible with the way Firefox does things. Firefox uses a '''json''' file for bookmark backups, a '''bookmarks.html''' for import and export is bookmarks, and stores the users bookmarks in the '''places.sqlite''' file, along with browsing history.
Put those folders and bookmarks in the '''\user\Favorites\''' folder so they are in IE and export your IE Favorites in HTML format, so you can import them into Firefox.
    In IE:
File > Import/Export - Export to HTML file
    ''then in Firefox:'' <br />
Bookmarks > Show All Bookmarks -> Import & Backup - Import HTML... = From HTML file

  • Why doesn't iMovie import video directly from the iPhone 3GS

We here quite frequently that Apple offers a better overall experience than the competition because they make the whole widget... I was SHOCKED to discover that iMovie will NOT recognize my iPhone 3GS... Doesn't Apple make both products and their OS's (Yes, I know they make both)?
iMovie imports video from my FLip HD just fine... This is very disappointing... And yes, I figured out how to do it... Import it to iPhoto, export it as a .mov and import it to iMovie... This is crazy, Apple!

What I find shocking is that if you open iMovie and select "Import from Camera..." the iPhone doesn't show up.
For further clarification, I have turned off the option to open iPhoto or Image Capture automatically when a camera is attached. I don't that option to import photos from my camera because they are automatically imported to my computer via the eye-fi card in my camera.
I do expect that when I open iMovie manually and select to "Import from Camera..." that the iPhone will be recognized as a camera. My FLip mino HD is recognized and it is awkward to then have to open iPhoto, import the movies, export the movies and then import them to iMovie to modify them and move them to my Apple TV.
I have provided Apple my Feedback on both their iPhone and iMovie sites.

  • IMovie imports only for one minute

When I was using iMovie 6.x I was able to transfer signal from my VCR or TV through an analog to digital converter (Formac DV) and burn a functional DVD. Since upgrading to iMovie 7.1 I cannot not.
I get a signal that iMovie imports but importing stops after 1 minute and I get a message telling me importing has stopped and that "the tape has been rewound". There is only a one minute recording. I can import movies (either .mov or Quicktime movies from my harddrive.) In addition, during this one minute import I do not see the signal being recorded. If I record from iSight everything works as it should; I can record as long as I wish and I can monitor the signal throughout the recording.
I called Apple and after three calls I got bumped to a higher level and I was lead through an archive an install of 10.5, upgrade to 10.5.2, and re installation, of iLife 08. However, in order to get back to the higher level I must leave a message and get a return call within 2 days. Apple had suggested as the next step to clone and reformat my drive which I would do but I think I'd like to know what the problem is. This is a new problem as iMovie 6.x did not have a problem with importing.
I am going to test the incoming signal by hooking up a digital camera to determine if the signal from the Formac is somehow the problem. I am not sure since the signal from iSight is recognized by iMovie as are the .mov and Quicktime movies from my harddrive. They are however, internal signals.
    Any thoughts?
    Martin

I get a signal that iMovie imports but importing stops after 1 minute and I get a message telling me importing has stopped and that "the tape has been rewound".
Sounds like you are trying to use the auto mode here in which the application is trying to use a master-slave protocol. Try switching to manual and make sure your tape player is running. If already in manual and it thinks it has an active protocol, then I would try an alternate capture work flow such as iMovie '06 or Vidi (free) to save the files to your desired destination hard drive and then simply "drop import" or use the "file move" option to bring them into iMovie '08. If either or both of these work, then I would assume the problem in in the application mistakenly trying to exert control over a "dumb" device.

  • Why does iMovie import vobs missing audio?

    Hello
I did import vobs in iMovie 11 from a personal dvd back up (a personal copy made from a VHS into a standard dvd video) in order to make some adjustments, but, surpise, no audio at all!. Checked single vobs and the whole dvd and everything works fine both on the mac and a home dvd player. I tried also to rename .vob in .mpeg, iMovie imports each without any problem, but it's always silent.
    Any hint?
    Thanks, Gianfranco

If you have not already done so, update to the latest (just released) version 9.0.4 - this update includes fixes for saving audio adjustments. Hopefully, it will fix your problem!

  • Can iMOVie import MP4 movies?

Can iMOVIE import MP4 formatted movies/

    Interesting,
Are you sure your using iMovie10 ?
Just tested (to be absolutely sure) a couple of clips.
Input DV-tape exports as .mp4 (SD and 540P quality)
Input .mp4 exports as .mp4 in HD and .mp4 in SD
Input AVCHD exports as .mp4 as well HD as SD.
iMovie 9 (iLife 11) exports default  in .mov (or .m4v when exported to iTunes)

Did you get any joy with answering this?
My first thought was that maybe when you imported you chose to leave the files  in place rather than copy then to the iMovie library..but I can't see where that option is now.
I too have created a short movie from load f clips..but can't export or share either..the 'Share 'menu is empty..you go to it and no sub menu appears.
