DirecTV Movie Channels vs Netflix

I've been a Directv customer since 1995, replacing really bad cable service where I live
I've always been (and still am) happy with the service and picture quality... but not so much with the cost of have basic service PLUS movie channels
Recently, a combination of factors has led me to plan to keep basic service... and drop the movie channels
1 is DTV raising their rates and 2 is Netflix growing to become a viable alternative
I recently ordered a Roku Netflix streaming video device... which I will connect to my living room TV when the Roku arrives, and then start a (2 week demo) Netflix account to see how it works with streaming video on demand
Figuring that will all work OK (Netflix user group has many happy users, plus the usual few who have problems getting things configured) I will then buy a 2nd Roku box for the theater setup... and will then drop all added movie channels from my DTV account
Will still have DTV basic service... just no more movie channels pumping out a couple hundred movies a month (most of which don't interest me) instead wife or I will scroll through what is available on Netflix (they claim 10,000 titles) and pick the one we want to watch, when we want to watch
We'll see how things work out when the Roku arrives... and I'm sure one customer isn't going to break DTV... but if they aren't careful, their price increases may just lead to more people leaving, or dropping the expensive movie channels, in favor of other movie sources

You do know smart phones have apps for Netflix? You do not have to be at a computer to select or control your downloads. It‘s worth a thought and consideration. (Topic discussion)

It’s good to share a thread with you again. One of these days I hope it is beers we share together.
I understood what you were saying about loss of human interaction and jumping from one virtual world into another.
I have my own personal theory/observation of this behavior which I have never seen anyone state. Before I give it, let’s have a flashback;
In the olden/olden days you did the “circle dance” to meet some one. After you met them, their aunts would follow ten steps behind on your date as chaperones, while you got to know the person you were interested in.
Remember how your parents hated your music? I have no interest in my kid’s music (Jonas Brothers), which they love. The previous generation never likes the changes/norms of the new generation.
Remember in the olden days dating meant going to drive in movies, or the “malt shop”? And not like now with clubs where “bottle service” costs $1000 to get a table, and you are out until 3am?
In the olden days (5-10 years ago) , you went to bars or church to meet people. Now the vast majority of people meet each other on-line. (Statistically true)
The world is moving like a bullet into this “virtual” world. We old foggies lament for the olden days. The genie is out of the bottle.
THEORY
My theory is that this is the direction the social evolution of culture/society is heading. (Like it or not) It will be the norm when all the elders die out, if not now. It is only logical.
Five years ago, I would only text when a reply was not needed. i.e. “I am on schedule, see you at 8”. Now I have conversations via text. I do not sit and wait for a response. I’m engaged in what I am doing at the moment. Later the reply comes. When I have a chance, I reply. I am multi-tasking, and the text is a low priority conversation. If it is a high priority, I call and talk. Logical and productive. (Perhaps that couple in the movies would not have even been talking to each even if they didn’t have their phones to text with?)
The world is moving towards a new norm in interaction.
I’m sure when telephones first appeared in the early 20th century, people scorned them as there was no face-to-face interaction. (“How can you get the full gist of the conversation without seeing the person’s facial expressions?”) We grew up with telephones as the norm and never thought twice about using one.
The new generation will grow up with the virtual interaction as the norm.
We are no longer the “beautiful people” who rule the world with our norms. Those norms are old fashion. There is a new group of beautiful people.  Plug me in.
