  • Mouse pointer jumping around and dock icon graphics tops breaking up

i been noticing my mac acting funny, at 1st i dismissed it as no big deal but now it has become more frequent. instead of happening occasionally its happening constantly. my mac has been in the exact same location since i owned it and my mouse surface hasnt changed. theres no debris i can see in the mouses eye. its like the computer is freezing then releasing the pointer. i cant even guess about why the dock icon graphic tops are breaking up. i ran my permissions and all is fine there. anyone else know what it could be? thanks for any help.

sweet the dock icons are full again. so far so good about the mouse. i forgot a couple months back i deleted my system folder(duh) and never reinstalled the techtool. i guess i paniced thinking something malicious was attacking my comp. sorry for assuming the worst. thanks for setting me straight.

  • [PKGBUILD] icon-theme.cache is already present

    Hi,
I created a PKGBUILD to test « perroquet » (http://perroquet.b219.org/index.html), it's also the mean to do my first PKGBUILD ;-) so any comments are welcome. The PKGBUILD is here : http://pastebin.com/m943685e
Unfortunately, when I want to install my package, I get this error:
    $ sudo pacman -U perroquet-1.0.0-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.gz
    Mot de passe :
    Chargement des données du paquet...
    Vérification des dépendances...
it is in french, so to traduce roughly: « /usr/share/icons/hicolor/icon-theme.cache is already present in the filesystem »
this file /usr/share/icons/hicolor/icon-theme.cache is in the package and in my system, what should I do ? delete the file in pre-install script ?

    ok, thanks.
But I don't understand why I have this problem. Since my post someone put a PKGBUILD on AUR for perroquet and there is nothing about icon-theme.cache: http://aur.archlinux.org/packages/perro … t/PKGBUILD (I can't try yet, I'm at work with Fedora ;-))

  • [SOLVED] icon-theme.cache and post install

    Hi all,
after a problem with an app (in this case RawTherapee) that requires uptodate icon-theme.cache files under /usr/share/icons/THEME - I just want to ask for your opinion: Is this a feature that should be provided by the icon-theme package post install?
    For example, xfce4-icon-theme has
    post_install() {
    gtk-update-icon-cache -q -t -f usr/share/icons/Rodent
    in it's xfce4-icon-theme.install,
    while gnome-icon-theme and hicolor-icon-theme don't and require issueing gtk-update-icon-cache manually after installation/update.
So what do you think, does this call for a feature request?
Edit: Seems like I got the concept wrong and that a solution is not that simple / on the segfaulting programs side... see http://bugs.archlinux.org/task/14237. Thx Jan for explaining.

Apparently gtk-update-icon-cache didn't accept that i had a .icon-theme.cache in /usr/share/icons/hicolor/. After removing it gtk-update-icon-cache apparently created a new file "icon-theme.cache" and doesn't complain anymore. The thing that is wierd about this is that on my other comp i have the .icon-theme.cache and it doesn't complain when upgrading.. Marking this solved anyway

  • Icon graphic error

Hello everyone, my english is not very good but I hope you can understand me.
I have a graphic error in one of the icons at the system preference panel; in the second file (Hardware), my last icon (Mouse and Keyboard) appear very rare (it's like a rectangular button and the background is different to the rest of the file) and I can only read the word "Keyboard".
What's is the problem? How I can fix it?
    Thank you very much ^_^

Hi, godlakitu. Welcome to the Discussions.
Duplicate or missing preference panes, or corrupted preference pane icons, are usually caused by cache corruption. To resolve this:
    1. Quit System Preferences if it is open.
    2. Open your Home > Library > Caches folder.
    3. Trash the following two files therein:
    • com.apple.preferencepanes.cache
    • com.apple.preferencepanes.searchindexcache
    4. Empty the Trash.
    5. Launch System Preferences and all should be well.
    Good luck!

  • Include icon graphics in table of contents (TOC)?

    Question
Is it possible to have icons (i.e. inline anchored frames) automatically appear in the TOC?
(We translate into 15+ languages, so adding the graphics manually to the TOC after it's generated isn't really a viable option.)
    Scenario
In our manuals, we include a troubleshooting section explaining what different warning symbol icons mean. (Kind of like the various check engine lights you see in cars.) It'd be nice to show the actual icons in the TOC, to hopefully make that info a little easier to find.
We do include the icons in the actual headings in the book using shrink-wrapped anchored frames, but each anchored frame gets replaced with a space in the auto-generated TOC. (Which is what we would want in most cases, just not this particular instance.)
    Specs
We're working in unstructured FM 11.
    Thanks in advance,
    Jason Nichols

If you are willing to have a separate paragraph format for each variation of icon, you might be able to use the Frame Above property of each corresponding xxxTOC tag to bring in its icon, using the negative-space Frame-Above hack that Arnis described lately at:
    Are circled numbered steps possible?
This is going to pollute the Paragraph Catalog of course.
I would be tempted instead to use some font rendering tool to convert your icons to character glyphs in Unicode Private Use Area E000-F8FF*. Then the icons are just text brought in with each heading. Note: switching Character Formats in a heading breaks the automatic hypertext in the TOC. See:
    Page Number color in TOC
The link termination problem could be avoided by using an open license Unicode text font that is similar to your preferred heading font, and adding the icon glyphs to it in Private Use Area. Then there is no character format change in the affected TOC entries. Of course, turning your icons into font glyphs presumes you have vector art for them that is easily converted to outlines, otherwise it's going to be a major effort.
    * I would avoid Private Use Areas A or B, due to being on Planes 15 and 16 (larger than 32-bit code points).

  • Creating Icons/Graphics for High DPI Displays, naming and sizing

I'm having to create and deliver graphics and icons for a native desktop windows applications that must support Windows 8.1 and variety of screen resolutions which ranges from standard resolution monitors to new 4k high density displays.
Typically for iOS you would deliver an icon using the following size and naming convention to support both standard and Retina 2x devices.
    Standard Resolution
    Icon-72.png (actual size 72x72 pixels)
    Retina Display
[email protected] (actual size 144x144 pixels)
For Android on a 4k device, you might do the following:
[email protected] (actual size 288x288 pixels)
My question is would you also follow this same naming and sizing convention for native Windows 8.1 desktop apps? I'm assuming you would, but I'm getting some pushback.
This is slightly new territory in Windows desktop, but I'm hoping there may be a few who have experience and offer there suggestions.
    Thank you and best regards,

You will probably get better feedback in the forum for the picture program you are using... what is that program? (Photoshop?)

  • Graphics, caching and performance - how to address a lag and stutter?

I'm in the middle of developing an interactive story that I'm intending to cross deploy to a number of tablets - starting with the iPad. Instead of a classic page-turn style story, this is told on a long paper scroll, with the user panning left and right (and some times up and down) along the story.
All graphics are rendered as flat 3D panes using native 3D in Flash and move in a parallax fashion, kind of giving the effect of watching theatre flats change as you read. As such, I understand that they're already being rendered as bitmaps and the app is taking advantage of GPU rendering on the iPad. None of the graphics have their visibility set to false, and all of them are added to the stage (even if they're a good few pixels off to the right at the beginning) on the first frame. They're also all on the root stage and have no nested display objects.
The issue I'm finding is a noticeable lag and jump when new objects are about to come in from off screen for the first time. After they've been seen, the application runs quite smoothly. Obviously poor performance on first opening is a real problem though. I feel that this is probably a caching issue, but can't work out how to go about addressing it. Any ideas?
    A few further notes:
All graphics in the story share a class that includes cacheAsBitmap and cacheAsBitmapMatrix to ensure that the GPU acceleration can be taken advantage of
Am compiling to AIR 2.5 and using the packager directly from Flash CS5. Have tried 2.6 and it's actually noticeably slower
Once an image has been rendered on the screen it tends not to cause a lag the next time it's displayed. I tried having them all on the front at the beginning and then clearing them to try to force them into the cache - didn't seem to make a difference
All graphics are separate PNG files at the moment. I haven't tried pushing them all into a sprite sheet or three yet, think that might help?
Thanks in advance for any help you guys can suggest.
    Tom

    Hi Tom,
This is likely because the GPU has limited memory, and the biggest bottleneck with a GPU is copying data to it.
From the sounds of it the delay occurs when this happens (i.e. images just about to come on to the screen are loaded in to the GPU).
You could solve it (just thinking aloud here) by placing an instance of each image that is about to come on to the stage on the stage but under another image (e.g. under the backgroudn image) to force it to preload into the GPU.  Instead of placing them hidden on the stage, creating an instance in actionscript and storing it in a vector may also work?  Though perhaps these are not cached until they are added to the display list.
However, it may be likely that the number of images you have may exceed the capacity of the GPU anyway and this might not help.  I have also seen mentioned that the new Flash Player (iOS) is smart enough to recognise when images are fully hidden (i.e. behind a background image) and not cache or display them.
So if you had the following pages (mostly vertical but some horizontal):
    ABC
    D
    EF
    G
    H
You would perhaps do something like:
    ABC (cache: D)
    D (cache: ABC EF)
    EF (cache: D G)
    G (cache EF H)
    H (cache: G)
Sorry I don't have any definitive answers, just something to try.
    hope it helps!

  • MVCC, freezer files and cache overflow

    Hi,
I had an idea. The docs say: "If the cache becomes full of page copies before the old copies can be discarded, additional I/O will occur as pages are written to temporary "freezer" files. This can substantially reduce throughput, and should be avoided if possible by configuring a large cache and keeping snapshot isolation transactions short."
How about allocating a new cache file (of the same size as the original) in the env instead of creating hundreds (or more) freezer files when the cache is overflowing ? One can have multiple cache files already by specifying the cache in multiple segments. What's particularly irksome about these freezer files is that they stick around, even past checkpoints and restarts.
    Could this work ?
    Andi..

    Hi Michael,
What you just said makes a lot of sense. DB_READ_UNCOMMITTED and snapshot isolation don't make much sense used together. Using DB_READ_UNCOMMITTED everywhere, I should not be having many deadlocks or blockages. But, until now, I was getting lots of them unless I was using MVCC. The reason is that I found several places where I wasn't using the DB_READ_UNCOMMITTED bit with getting cursors or getting data. As a matter of fact, because of an egregious bug of mine not propagating the DB_READ_UNCOMMITTED bit properly, many data accesses were still wrongly using the default - maximum - isolation level.
To find these places, I set an artificially low txn timeout and traced back to the bogus calls from the DB_LOCK_DEADLOCK exceptions I'd receive. I believe I found them all now. :)
Reading data that is not yet committed is not a problem for us except in one specific case. DB_READ_UNCOMMITTED should be completely safe as the Chandler repository is, in a way, duplicating in a persistent way what MVCC also does, that is, keeping multiple versions of data around and presenting multiple versions of data to different transactions.
The only place where a higher isolation level is needed - DB_READ_COMMITTED - is in the small database containing the latest version number for the Chandler repository. Using DB_READ_UNCOMMITTED everywhere except in this version db and opening this and this database only with DB_MULTIVERSION solves all the problems I was trying to solve with using MVCC everywhere earlier. Because most transactions I create span multiple databases, I am still opening all read-only transactions with DB_TXN_SNAPSHOT but it should only have an effect when accessing this one lone db opened with DB_MULTIVERSION, correct ?
This is a major breakthrough for me. Commit throughput in a large mail import operation (done in chunks) is now three times what it was before.
It is also much harder, but however still possible, to get freezer files, with the usual dramatic worsening of performance. Maybe 64mb cache is too small. I'm going to double that and watch it over time. Even though the 'version' db is tiny, it is a btree with one record per version plus two records that are being updated every time a new version is written, I still managed to get, over time, up to two thousand freezer files.
This has been a productive exercise as I had very wrongly assumed that I was using DB_READ_UNCOMMITTED consistently already.
    Regards,
    Andi..

Probably a hosed LaunchServices database. Launch the Terminal app in /Applications/Utilities/, copy & paste this one-line command into the window that pops up, and hit the command key:
*/System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/LaunchS ervices.framework/Versions/A/Support/lsregister -kill -r -domain local -domain system -domain user*
Quit the Terminal app, restart, and see if that fixes the issue.

  • Cannot delete icon services cache from trash.

Hi everyone, I have a 15" macbook 2014 running yosemite. I was having trouble with a download that was stuck on pause so I thought I would empty the cache for the mac store. I trashed a file named com.apple.iconservices.store. That was fine I rebooted and OS X recreated cache as normal. After that I am not able to delete folder from trash because it says the files inside the folder are in use. the files have names like this 1AEDA0FE-C8DB-52F8-3A88-57A134262EB1.isdata. I have managed to unlock the folder by changing the permission settings and I removed a file and changed its name thinking it wouldn't recognize the file. I still get an in use prompt even with a bogus name. Any suggestions? should I just ignore this file in the trash? seems like if it is going to be a problem I should just revert back to an older time machine since it has only been a week at this point. thanks.

    Hi Jaron,
Thanks for participating in the Apple Support Communities.
If you have cache or data files in the Trash that cannot be deleted, try the methods in this article such as holding Option when emptying the Trash:
You can't empty the Trash or move a file to the Trash - Apple Support
If the Trash still can't be emptied after trying the methods in this article, try Using Disk Utility to verify or repair disks on your Mac's startup disk.

  • App store icon graphics gone, so are screen shots.  Updates page looks like it's not properly loaded - just text, no icons and no 'install' option. Can anyone help?

It happened after i did a load of updates.  Icons are now missing - not a huge problem because they still download (just nice to get a glimpse of what i'm buying - there's no screenshots any more either).
Updates page doesn't look like it's loaded properly - just a load of text down left side, no images and no option to install updates.
I've done a hard restart and it hasn't helped.  I'm hoping i don't need to do something more drastic...?

You could try "buying" a free app, which might help to reset things?

  • Any way to use a quick and dirty icon like cLabel in the quick tools toolbar?

I am a javascript cut-and-paster with ability to cobble things together.
In previous versions of Acrobat, I had tools that were added to the toolbar using the technique shown in this script:
    app.addToolButton({cName: "MyFlattenButton",
       cLabel: "Flatten",
       cEnable: "event.rc = (app.doc != null);",
       cExec: "flattenPages();"
That would create a toolbar button with the "icon" that read "Flatten" which is all that I needed.  I could click on it and it would flatten all pages in the document.
I used this to create several different tools, all with different names and cLabels.
This script still works in Acrobat XI (it adds the tool to the add-on tools list, and then I can add it from there to the quick tools toolbar).  The cLabel names show up in the add-on tools list, but not in the quick tools toolbar.  In the toolbar they all use the same generic icon (but they all work correctly).
From reading in this forum I see that there is a way to create a custom icon but it does not look easy.  Is there any simple way to just have text appear as the icon as I used to do for earlier versions of Acrobat?
    Thanks.

    One further question...
I found a code snippet somewhere online that attempted to deal with this issue.  That led me to this (failed) solution:
    this.importIcon("myIconFlat", "/D/J/CAD Standards/Stamps/Acrobat tools/flatten.jpg", 0);
    var flatIcon = util.iconStreamFromIcon(this.getIcon("myIconFlat"));
    app.addToolButton({cName: "MyFlattenButton",
       cLabel: "Flatten",
       oIcon: flatIcon,
       cEnable: "event.rc = (app.doc != null);",
       cExec: "flattenPages();"
The problem there is that importIcon is not allowed from a folder-level javascript, apparently.  Would there be any way to use the importIcon part of this from the console and then cut and paste some output into the rest of the script?  Just looking for a way to get the icon into my script.

  • New icons/graphic in forum

I just noticed that there are 2 new graphics on the legend of the forum topic pages for "helpful answer" and "correct answer" (see them over there to the right? - OK, where'd they go?!?!?!?!).
I really like the implication of what these (apparently) represent - but who is going to monitor all the postings to apply these neat little ditties? Sounds like an army of Oracle summer interns are going to become intimately familiar with the OTN forums. ;^)
    Earl

Maybe they'll finish that and also allow us to change our email addresses?
As it is a forum, I think it is a good idea. Someone who posts zillions of messages is not necessarily helping the forum out as much as someone who posts a few spot on answers. The spot on answers might be read and used by dozens so they're likely to get a good proportion of the users clicking answered and this is more a measure of their input than sheer volume of postings.
