Dirty solution to Wifi dropouts 10.5.3/10.5.4

*Before reading* any further, please mention these statements:
*- Fixing issue's using previous Mac OS X builds can be very risky (use this tip at your own risk!)*
*- You're about to re-open security flaws that were (originally) solved by a recent update in 10.5.3/10.5.4*
*- There's probably a better solution to execute the fix and install the kext files... So please add your comments!*
Ok, so I was one of the many people around the forums who had Airport problems. My symptoms: Wifi was fine until I updated to Mac OS X 10.5.3. Constant wifi dropouts and 'Beacons Lost' in the Console... I've tried many options in these forums, without any succes... so I tried some dirty fix myself.
Preparations:
1) Backup your system!
2) Download 10.5.2 Combo Update (you will probably have to download this from another working/wired system and burn it to a cd. I did.)
3) Download 10.5.4 Combo Update
4) Download Pacifist (http://www.charlessoft.com/)
Go to /System/Library/Extensions and locate the IO80211Family.kext folder.
5) Backup this folder to another location. Name it something like '1054Wifi'
6) Open up the 10.5.2 Combo Update, but do NOT install it (or try it ;)). You will need the new mounted disk.
7) Install the pacifist programme and run it. Take some time and press 'Not yet' to continue...
8) Open the 10.5.2 package and locate /System/Library/Extensions/IO80211Family.kext
9) Extract these folder to your system at the exact same location
10) Run your Disk Utility (Programmes/Utilities) and 'Repair Disk Permissions'
11) Reboot
This worked for me. No wifi dropouts anymore!
When apple finally fixes this bug do not forget to run the 10.5.4 Combo Update or try above dirty solution using the 10.5.4 Combo update before updating to the next version (10.5.5?).
Please add some comments to this post! Good luck.

Please note that by doing this you will not only reopen some security holes fixed by recent updates, but also that it is likely the 10.5.4 and future updates will not properly update the AirPort drivers, as simply replacing a kernel extension will confuse the system.
For that matter it's also likely to have other subtle side effects on the system that no one - Apple or anyone else - has tested for.
I understand your frustration and your desire to find a solution that works for you, but do realize there are major caveats to doing so.

  • MacBook Pro 15" & Lion 10.7.3 wifi dropout

    Hi
My MacBook Pro 15" bought in mid 2009. I experienced serious wifi dropout problem recently. Actually my wifi dropout happens almost every few minutes. What the change I made recently was upgrading operating system to Lion operating system and fibre - wifi. I am not sure whether it's hardware problem or operating system bugs. I have tried to tether my iPhone 4s wifi to MacBook Pro and it looks alright. Hence I assume it's not hardware/ network card problem.
I have tried various solutions found on Internets or Mac related websites but still unable to resolve this problem. I am not sure whether there is any application could diagnose this wifi dropout problem. What would be the adequate fibre wifi roundter setting for MacBook Pro?
Appreciate Apple or anyone would share your solution and experience.

  • After update to 10.9.1. wifi dropouts

    hi,
after updating to 10.9.1. experiencing frequent wifi dropouts. so far used 5GHz and experienced the dropouts  (router: linksys ea4200). currently using 2.4GHz so far without dropout. but also speed slowed down significantly.
    anyone experiencing similar problems?

I think the problem is due to incompatibility with your dreadful Linksys router, but you can try the following steps. Back up all data before making any changes.
    Step 1
Take all the applicable steps in this support article. If you're running OS X 10.8.4 or later, run Wireless Diagnostics and take the remedial steps suggested in the summary that appears, if any. The program also generates a large file of information about your system, which would be used by Apple Engineering in case of a support incident. Don't post the contents here.
    Step 2
Run Software Update and install all available updates for OS X or your computer's firmware.
    Step 3
If you're not using a wireless keyboard or trackpad, disable Bluetooth by selecting Turn Bluetooth Off from the menu with the Bluetooth icon. If you don't have that menu, open the Bluetooth preference pane in System Preferences and check the box marked Show Bluetooth in menu bar. Test. Continue if you find that Wi-Fi is faster with Bluetooth disabled.
From that same menu, select Open Bluetooth Preferences. If the box labeled Discoverable is checked, uncheck it. Click the Advanced button, and in the sheet that opens, uncheck the top three boxes, if any are checked. Click OK. Enable Bluetooth and test again.
If the application called "Bluetooth Setup Assistant" is running, quit it. Note: this is not applicable to OS X 10.9 or later.
    Step 4
This step will erase all your settings in the Network preference pane. Make a note of them before you begin, and recreate them afterwards. It may be helpful to take screenshots of the preference pane.
Triple-click the line below on this page to select it:
    /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
    Services ▹ Reveal
from the contextual menu.* A folder should open with an item named "SystemConfiguration" selected. Move the selected item to the Trash. You may be prompted for your administrator password.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar, paste into the box that opens (command-V). You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.
    Step 5
    Reset the System Management Controller.
    Step 6
Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service center.
Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional — ask if you need guidance.
If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.
Keeping your confidential data secure during hardware repair
*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.

  • Ios 8 wifi dropout

    ios 8 wifi dropout

I have been having network dropout issues for about 6 weeks now. I run a wireless LED  lighting display utilizing a number of WiFi bridges.
They have been constantly dropping off the network at random times. I have changing 2 routers and 8 bridges with no result.
To cut a long story short 2 days ago I realized it was my new phone that was the culprit, or more specifically iOS 8. This problem also manifests itself in my iPad mini also running iOS 8. The dropouts never happen in both devices at the same time.!!!  After reading the numerous complaints from hundreds of people online regarding this problem, I decided to follow some of their recommendations by resetting network settings, then resetting ALL settings but to no avail. I took the phone to the local Apple shop yesterday, they did a hardware check and said that was ok. They said the last resort is to do a complete reset and wipe, and if that doesn't resolve the problem they will replace the handset. In the end that didn't work, so I took it back and was duly given a new handset. When I initially set it up I did notice an overall improvement in performance, things just worked better. The lighting bridges were there and working. Then after about 4 hours the old problem came back. So I'm now resigned to the fact that I'm just going to have to wait till Apple addresses the problem in the software [or maybe firmware??]
PS   Having said all that, I just looked at your comment regarding the iOS version and the new phone actually has 8.1.1  I checked the update status and 8.1.2 is available so I will download that and see what happens.  In your message you said 8.0.2  Is that correct ??

  • GX70 Wifi dropouts

Saw the sticky for GS70 wifi dropouts, having the same problem with my GX70.
Does the same fix apply or is there something else I need to check, basically it drops out almost at regular intervals, 3-4 hours or so. Easy enough to reconnect but it happens during gaming which is annoying.

Have you tried to update the latest WLAN dirver?
Which version are you using now?
Unless you're also having an Intel ac wireless adapter, or I don't think the fix will work on your GX70.

  • The annoying wifi dropout problem. I bought it just a week ago!!!!

Hello. I bought a macbook pro 13 retina a week ago and I get constant wifi dropouts. Every time I need to either turn off and on wifi or use network diagnostics (which shows the ISP and other ticks below it in red). I currently run OS mavericks 10.7.5 but the problem existed with previous 10.7.4 as well. It happens very randomly and not necessarily when system goes to sleep. I have completely reinstalled OS once but the problem still persists. I also tried removing the wifi stuff from keychain and network but none worked. In fact I get full wifi signal without any noise (when you open up wireless diagnostics and click cmd+2, u go to utilities and via performance tab you can see the signal and noise graph over time, which is always consistent for me. No signal drop and no noise at all, even when wifi completely disconnects, no changes can be seen in the diagram). If it helps, I also pinged a website several times and rarely saw any packet loss or timeout, but immediately when wifi is lost you see the corresponding error in the ping: No route to host. One more thing: whenever I try to put TCP/IP on manual or using DHCP with manual address I completely lose the connection which is also visible in the menu bar where it shows a question mark. So any ideas?

The warranty entitles you to complimentary phone support for the first 90 days of ownership.
If you bought the product in the U.S. directly from Apple (not from a reseller), you have 14 days from the date of delivery in which to exchange or return it for a refund. In other countries, the return policy may be different. If you bought from a reseller, its return policy applies.

  • Possible WiFi dropout solution

Check the setting in your modem/router called GROUP KEY UPDATE INTERVAL. It generally defaults to 3600 secs (1 hour). Found this page. http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/1089217 Set my key to 0 and now been stable for over 6 hours.

Solution worked for both of my routers (D-Link & Linksys-Cisco) with the 2 iMacs and Dell NetBook. Other 2 PCs unaffected either way. Both routers defaulted to 3600 secs. Now set to 0 secs update. I did call the topic "possible solution", not "the solution". I'm now also able to copy files across my network which I was finding difficult pre this fix. Still not entirely convinced that I have "the solution" to my wifi issue but I've got that warm fuzzy feeling.

  • [solved] A2109A-F intermittent WiFi dropouts

    Hi all,
some days ago I bought the tablet and am going nuts over it soon.
With ICS as well as JB I experience the same problem that on 3 out of 4 WiFi's I have intermittent dropouts where first the indicator turns grey then vanishes and comes back on after some seconds. The interval is some 10 to 30 seconds depending on ??? the router ???. It doesn't affect e.g. youtube but regularly stops flash videos and randomly gives "server not available" messages during surfing. Since it also occurs during video streaming, I don't think it is "powermanagement" related, although I disabled as much as I could find.
Unfortunately the WiFi in the shop where I bought the tablet is one of the 25% that are working ok....
any hint / help much appreciated
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

ok, found the problem (at least at two if the location that are of my interest): although the chipset in my router and the tablet are from same manufacturer, they are incompatible if some "turbo mode" is enabled on the router. Probably the same at our office but I can't get into the adminpage

  • SOLVED: WiFi dropouts under Windows 7 on Retina Macbook Pro

I never found the solution to the problem but I found hints around the web. After hours of playing with router settings and driver settings, this problem is solved. Wanted to log down because I did many searches and did not find any clear guidelines. (I can find them when searching for what I now know is the answer)
Short answer: Disable 40MHz in the router. Use only 20MHz. (Not auto, not both).
Situation: I have to use Windows 7 as it's a work computer (for various reasons). At my home network (only - other places OK), I could never connect reliably to the wifi. Sometimes it would appear 'fast' (I live in China so nothing's every blistering) and sometimes I'd just get the yellow hat on my wifi bars indicating no connection.
I knew it was a problem with my computer/drivers because
Other hardware in the house (ipads, other windows computers, phones) all connected as one would expect to the internet.
My computer couldn't even get a good connection to the router (the config page). I.e. it was a LAN issue.
Manually setting some parts of the internet settings (e.g. IP address, DHCP server) did not help
    What I tried
Cleaned out all the junk in the computer (there was an old Java vulnerability but not sure if that had any impact)
    Removed some junk software
Stopped many services systematically (thinking they were blocking the connection before even my netstat software) - I was suspicious of some installed by my bank (remember where I live)
Changing some wireless adapter settings. E.g. changed in AP mode 'higher performance' to 'broader compatibility'.
Upgraded router firmware, using a fairly normal ASUS RT-12N, but very old firmware
Final solution: I had read somewhere something about Apple wifi hardware and bluetooth interfereing. even though I have no bluetooth hardware, I thought it might be a cause. So I set the router to 20MHz only rather than 40 and 20 simultaneously.
    Results:
Stable connection (1 day uptime so far)
Much higher bandwidth (about double previously... i.e. 500-800KB/s, which is fast for where I live)
Lower latency (quicker loads of some previously slow pages
Obviously I have only tested this on one computer. Hope this works for you.

  • Is there a solution to wifi passwords not being recognised even when they're correct?

I have had a very frustrating morning trying to connect to our wifi at work. I know I have the correct password but its saying its wrong. I see there are pages of people having the same problem but I have yet to read a viable solution! I upgraded from a 3GS to iphone 4s at the weekend. Looking at all the unanswered issues with this problem and that of Siri's  (which also isn't working) I might be enacting my cooling off period to give it back. Does anybody know what the problem is yet? Resetting Network didn't work....

Annoying isn't it? I chose 'Get Info' and changed the default player to VLC Player
    Cheers

  • New solution for Wifi problems

I wasn't able to join my home wifi network. Kept entering the password, and iPhone kept telling me I had the wrong password. But I found a solution: in Settings, I manually entered the password using "Ascii/Hex" (rather than the standard "password"). Bingo! Now I'm on wifi, cruising around.

Some of the problems people are having with connections has to do with the fact that for some reason they're either getting an IP address that's not in their subnet or not getting an IP address assigned at all. That was happening to me as well. What happens when you connect via ethernet is that you resolve that problem.
Hopefully Apple will come up with a permanent solution soon.

  • Macbook wifi dropouts ??

    Hi,
I recently got a new 2011 Macbook Pro 13 (Thunderbolt) and have had problems with the WIFI dropping off after every 20 minutes
or so. I have updated the OS and all updates. I have noticed at home it drops out when using WIFI. There I am using an Orange Livebox
(new one - 802), but at work it does not dropout... I am wondering what the problem could be.
    Any ideas?

These type of discussions, of the speculative type, are not allowed under the Terms of Use.
Having said that, don't expect one any time soon so if you want to buy a MacBook buy one now. While it does look like there are a lot of issues there really aren't. These discussions concentrate and amplify the the quantity and seriousness of many issues.
If you want to speculate I would suggest you do it elsewhere like on Mac rumours sites of which there are many.

  • The Scientific Method Solution to WIFI Problems

    Start with known facts
    1. No other Apple WiFi product out-of-the-box has the full range of these problems with WiFi as of this date. IPhone, ITouch, various MACs and such take on all manner of router configurations without a whimper.
    2. The WiFi technology required for these products and the IPad to connect to WiFi has been around for years and well known to Apple.
With these facts, I conclude the problem lies within the IPad itself and has nothing to do with various routers or their settings.
While messing around with the settings on routers or calling in Shamins, to administer cures with smoke and beating with small branches, might give a little aid and comfort, we must await the final solution from Apple. Too bad Apple did not catch this from the beta testing.

the iPad should work with most wifi routers.  There are some old wife routers it may not.  Your ipad coiuld have a hardware problem.
Does it work with some routers?  Have you hung out in the lobby of the hotel and asked if other ipad users are having a problem.  What does the hotel staff say?
You could carry a mini wifi router with you and connect the mini via ethernet cable.
Find the make and model of the wifi router.  We can check if other ipad owners are having problem.
    a 4g solution.
    I recently signed up for FreedomPop.com. http://www.freedompop.com
FreedomPop provides 500meg of free 4g cellular data per month!  You do need to buy their wireless device at $39.  Your machine needs wifi capability. There are ways of getting bonus megs.  One gig of addition data costs $10 per month.  I used about 15megs per hour of lite internet surfing.
When signing up, you need to be careful with your selections.  On some screens, the free option is a small link below the large button.  FreedomPop employs a Pavlovian Dog < Operant conditioning > thing of getting you used to clicking on the large button then they change the large button to a paid add-on.
Once you setup your account, you need to go to your account options screen to turn off automatic paid data download once you exceed your quota.
The performance seems a little slower than my DSL connection.
