Dirty Volume

After I used the Mac version of CS3 Bridge's Photo Downloader, I received a log file at the top of all the photos I downloaded. Can anyone tell me what this means and what I should do?
Just added: For some reason, I cannot paste the text on this forum message. In part, the message says:
Checking file system on F:
The type of the file system is FAT.
The volume is dirty.
Windows has checked the file system and found no problems.

>Will reformatting the card using my Canon Rebel XT be a good thing to do?
YES. Not only a good thing but a necessity.
>I read that by doing this, it will restart the file numbering system,
No. The camera keeps count of the numbering, not the card. Just think of the millions of us who carry a number of cards for the same camera.
> I have a sneaking suspicion that I may have saved a file on my compact flash card at work using a card reader. This must have saved a FAT file on it.
Nonsense. It doesn't work that way. You need to reformat a volume in order to turn it into a FAT32 formatted one.

  • Windows is Scanning and repairing drive... (- Errors in Event Viewer)

Long post, please be patient... :)
    I have a fairly new (purchased 8/2013) Lenovo ThinkPad T431s with Windows 8.1 Pro 64-bit (updated from 8.0 -> 8.1). It has a very tricky error coming basically 8 / 10 boots:

What has been done 1st trying to fix that:
SSD disk has been changed (image from previous SSD copied back) ->

chkdsk /F /R -> no solution, error remains
SFC /scannow -> no solution, error remains
dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth -> no solution, error remains after a few boots
TRIED using Windows 8.1 "Update & Recovery -> Refresh Your PC without affecting your files" -> Inserted the Lenovo "Operating System Recovery Disk Windows 8 Pro (OEM Activation 3.0 Required)" BUT Windows did not accept
that DVD claiming "The media inserted is not valid"... ???
Ended up calling Lenovo Support and they instructed me to order the Recovery DVD from

    What is causing the error?
    3) Why do I have three (3) recovery partitions?

What has happened in the past days:
    A) Lenovo on-site-Support changed the motherboard -> had no impact on the error (which I expected).
    B) I found

    C) Booted with USB and performed "Refresh your PC without affecting your files."
    D) Windows was refreshed but...

Now Lenovo support is proposing a full re-install (to be performed by myself) of Windows as this is SW issue.

  • Started w/ Folder & Exclamation Point-All Downhill From There

I have been at this for hours and hours...PLEASE rescue me.
I finally got rid of the folder and exclamation point after the 4th R kicked in. I didn't want to restore and lose everything, but that's what happened anyway! It took forever to get the updater to work and now I'm in worse shape than ever. My iPod was in iTunes until I ejected it. I was expecting to listen to music when, to my horror, I found that everything was gone. I reconnected so I could drag my music back in, but now my iPod has disappeared from iTunes and my computer as well. I've tried the Apple website suggestions to no avail. I can't understand what's going on. I'm using Windows XP and the last time I restarted a message came up saying that the FAT 32 file associated with E: had dirty volume or something like that. I'm guessing this is all connected somehow. Bottom line...I just want to listen to my iPod.

    Hello,
    Try doing this:
Connect your iPod, and go onto your administrator account on your computer.
Click on CtrlAltDelete to pull up the Tadk Manager. Try ending this process: "iPod Service.exe" under the "Processes" tab in Task Manager.
Open the iPod Updater again. Try to restore your iPod now.
If the iPod Updater is freezing on "initializing" for more than a few minutes, then post back if that didn't do it yet.
Then, assign your iPod a different drive letter following the steps below (first eject your iPod through the Safely Remove Hardware program):
    Go to your administator account.
1 - Don’t plug in your iPod yet.
2 - Go to "START -> Control Panel -> Admin Tools (if you don't see this, click on "classic view" button on the left panel) -> Computer Management."
3 - Click on the "Disk Management" button in the left panel area.
4 - Now, with "Computer Management" and Control Panel windows opened, reset your iPod, and connect it.
5 - Right-click on your iPod's listing there (after a few moments when it gets recognized in this drive window), and click on "Change Drive letter and Paths". Then the "Change..." button.
Here's what it should look like:
Assign your iPod the letter "M" "N", "O" or the like (further along in the alphabet).
For more details, see this article:
Windows confuses iPod with network device / Changing drive letter
    I hope this helps you,

  • ASM Volumes on thin-provisioned ISCSI dirtying whole volumes

Hi, we've got some EBS test instances going and are testing auto-extend (in reasonable chunks) on a thin-provisioned ISCSI volume for the 11g database tier. Something doesn't seem right though: typically I see about 55GB in use by datafiles but about 95% of the thin-provisioned volume is marked dirty.
Obviously, this sort of negates the point of using thin provisioning at all, but I can't help but think there's something else at work here. Does anyone have experience with this situation and if so what parameters can be set to make what we're trying to do actually work right?

Billy, thank you for the helpful reply. In this case, none of that is news to me - we wear a lot of hats where I work and in this case I not only put together the systems the ASM instance is running on, but the ASM instance itself (DB is at 11.1.0.7 with the 6851110 ASM patch recently applied). System is OEL 5 x86_64, the ISCSI volume is thin-provisioned, no filesystem ever written to it, raw disk other than a partition table, holds DATA and FRA, configured with autoextend on.
What I'm trying to get at here is why a 500GB volume which is holding only about 55GB of data would have almost all its blocks marked dirty - as far as the filer is concerned, something has touched nearly every block on the volume at one point or another. Now if I'd written a 500GB datafile to it - which as you say is pointless where ASM is concerned - I'd understand how the blocks got dirtied, but in this case that never happened - it's somewhere in the way ASM behaves (as far as I can see now anyway) that has caused the data to be written all over the physical blocks on the drive, even if only momentarily.
So getting back to my original question, is there a way in ASM to ensure that writes are done in a contiguous fashion so that the apparent disk usage (from the SAN point of view) more closely matches the actual amount of data stored? I'm not seeking a 1:1 relationship here, but we're close to 1:10, and I think that's only because that's how big I sized the volume in the first place. As far as it being ISCSI, the only relevance (and the whole point of my question) is that it's how I happened to attach the volume, which was intended to be thin-provisioned and only allocate space when it's needed. If I'd made the volume 250GB (and I can test this theory if need be), it would likely dirty 250GB of blocks and still store the same 55GB of data. My hope is that there's a way to get ASM to play nicer on thin-provisoned volumes than what I'm currently seeing.
    Thanks again.

  • ASM Volumes on thin-provisioned SAN dirtying all blocks

Hi there, sorry for the x-post from database-general but it was suggested that I do so. Anyhow, we've got 11g (11.1.0.7 with the 6851110 ASM patch recently applied) running on OEL 5 x86_64, with ASM connected to a raw, thin-provisioned ISCSI volume partitioned for DATA and FRA, and in every case where we do so, the SAN device reports within a few weeks that the whole volume has been allocated even though the DB (configured with autoextend on) is only holding about one tenth of the amount of available space on the device. What this means in systems terms is that somehow ASM is marking writes to nearly every block on the drive if only momentarily.
In the original thread, there was speculation that a process of indexing AUs has led to the dirtying of the whole volume, but this would make more sense if the whole disk had been allocated immediately rather than over the course of a few weeks. My question is: what else could account for this behavior, and what steps can I take to help ensure that ASM behaves correctly in a thin-provisioned volume? (by "correctly" I mean writes contiguous blocks of data and doesn't dirty the whole thing)
    Thanks!

    Hi,
recently i had some time and did some tests with thin provisioning and ASM.
I used storage based on Opensolaris with ZFS thin provisioning against a 11g R2 database with 11g R2 ASM running on Windows. I created two LUNs and exported the LUNs via iSCSI. On the ASM side i formed a single disk group with external redundancy of the two LUNs presented and created one big file tablespace with approx 15 GB total size.
The storage systems shows the LUNs as follows:
    NAME                       PROPERTY       VALUE    SOURCE
    pool1/iscsi-racwin-temp05  volsize        15G      local
    pool1/iscsi-racwin-temp05  usedbydataset  7.45G    -
    pool1/iscsi-racwin-temp06  volsize        15G      local
pool1/iscsi-racwin-temp06  usedbydataset  7.45G    -You can see: 15 GB total size reported while 7.45 GB are allocated. Thats pretty normal due to the data file created in the disk group.
During the night i ran a script which imported a schema and dropped it afterwards. The steps were repeated infinitely.
After more than 24 hours the thin provisioned disks look like this:
    NAME                       PROPERTY       VALUE    SOURCE
    pool1/iscsi-racwin-temp05  volsize        15G      local
    pool1/iscsi-racwin-temp05  usedbydataset  7.47G    -
    pool1/iscsi-racwin-temp06  volsize        15G      local
pool1/iscsi-racwin-temp06  usedbydataset  7.47G    -As you can see there is a extremely small growth in size (from 7.45 GB to 7.47 GB). I observed this growth shortly after starting the very first import. Subsequent imports did not increased the actual allocated volume size.
So if we exclude the storage as a source for problems there might be the fact that 11g R1 ASM behaves different than 11g R2 ASM. I have not yet tested this...

  • Choosing Office 2013 volume licensing plan ... or going retail ... or subscription ... or hunting for 2010 ... what a headache ...

Our company currently runs an office software equivalent comparable to Office 2003 level. I was researching options (licensing!) for stepping up our office to real Microsoft Office product ... and got stuck with that idea ... totally confused at this point.
Am I missing something or the cheapest SMB volume licensing option for MS Office 2013 (Standard, no Access component) is like twice as expensive as the retail equivalent? Why is that so? It makes no sense to me at all.
I can find retail box of Office 2013 Home and Business for around $190 while the cheapest Open License for similar equivalent seems to be priced at $369 (what!?) ... and that is even without Software Assurance?
Makes it kinda hard to convince management about benefits of VL program over retail ... especially since we are not a Volume Licensed customer (yet) and this purchase *might* make it worth becoming one (does it?).
On top of that I can't even make decision if we should really go with Office 2013 after reading about live/online account requirement for activation, and here a question how does it work in volume licensing version? I assume it will be a great pain with
installs from retail media and activation, but VL should have some tools or workarounds for that, no? I read that Office 2010 didn't have such problems and am sad I didn't push towards it when it was still available on retail market.
Maybe we should go with 2013 subscription for first year and see how that works for us ...
One thing for sure, I've been digging around this subject for weeks and my headache doesn't want to go away.
    Open to suggestions.

    anybody, any insights?
Pls, also note that I run a one person IT department for this company, so all the dirty work (installs) will be done by me, hence my question. I can do deployments via GPO, but would like to know about activation gotchas (MS live accounts) for Office 2013,
is that true for retail licenses?
As per Volume Licensing, am I looking right and cheapest 1 computer Office 2013 open license stands for like $369? why is i so expensive in volume licensing plans? I doubt our management approves it this way ... which probably means retail licensing for
me and a great headache with activations over a sneaker net ... times 30 ...

  • How do I get my volume bar back on iPhone 4?

My volume bar is missing from my iPhone 4 and this seems to be the reason the audio won't work when I try to play music. However, when I play a ringtone the audio is fine. I put my iPhone in the Bose speaker dock and the volume bar comes back, but only temporarily. I've already tried restoring it and it didn't fix the problem. Help?

Just came home to find I have the same problem!! iPhone 4S, never jail broken, dropped or spilled anything on it! I have been using my original iPhone charger (when they came out with the new iPhone I just shaved my charging/docking station to fit) so it is a little on the dirty side!
This is the first post I read so I did the headphone thing, the docking undocking thing, restarted it and messed with all the volume setting and neither of them worked.
So finally taking "mike iPhone guys" post, I looked @ the 32 pin port at the bottem of the iPhone and I reminded me of a old Nintendo cartridge do untreated it as so.
*** THIS IS HOW I FIXED THIS ISSUE, I DO NOT RECOMMEND IT BEFORE CONSULTING APPLE, YOU MIGHT DAMAGE YOUR DEVICE*********
These are the exact steps I took ....
    1. I blew into the port and it did absolutely nothing!
    2. I took a vacuum ($200 Hoover windtunnel t series P.A.W.S pet approved vacuum, so it has some power behind it, not the most expensive but not the cheapest either) and used the smallest accessory, the long connection hose/tube with the smaller rectangle attachment and sucked the air out of the port.
This worked for 5 secs my volume bar appeard and then disappeared again.
    3. I took a very thin butter knife, wrapped it with a paper towel that I sprayed windex with and stuck it in gently one both sides, tested and still didn't work.
    4. Repeated the previous step but added a little pressure and shoved the blade in the upper part only closest to the screen, not the bottem side the knife didn't want to go in as easy so I didn't try, alot of dirt was on the rag, then I used a dry part of the towel and did the same again until there was no dirt on it!
    Tested and still didn't work!
    5. Blow in it once more, and vacuumed it once more but this time putting my finger in the area that the vacuum didn't reach on both ends an lightly tapping it, WORKS FINE NOW! Just needed some
Cleaning. I can only assume the dirt does make it
    Think that it's still docked.

  • I just bought this iPhone 4S second hand and during incoming and outgoing calls I can't hear the other person talk unless it's on speaker or if I have headphones in. I don't know what to do I've turned up my volume and checked my settings!! Need help

I Just bought a second hand iPhone 4S I am having issues with the hearing during incoming and outgoing calls, I have turned the volume up and checked my settings but I still have trouble hearing the other person speak. It works if it's on speaker or if I have headphones plugged in. I need help desperately!!!!! Any suggestions on what to do???

    Hey Itsanaasaunders,
Thanks for the question. I understand that you are experiencing issues hearing sound while on a call (receiver wise, not speakerphone). The following resource provides troubleshooting steps for this symptom:
If you can't hear a person on a call or voicemail or if the sound quality is poor on iPhone - Apple Support
    http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT203800
    Clear the receiver
The iPhone receiver won't work properly if it's blocked or dirty. Here's where the receiver is:
Follow these steps, testing after each:
    - Make sure nothing is blocking the receiver, such as a case or film.
If you have a new iPhone, remove the plastic film on the front and back of the device.
    - Check the receiver opening to see if it's blocked or dirty. If necessary, clean the receiver opening with a clean, small, dry, soft-bristled brush.
    - While you're on a call, turn on speakerphone. If you still can't hear, then your network or reception could be the issue. Try calling again later or from a different location.
    Restart and update
    1. Restart your iPhone and test again.
    2. If there's still no sound or poor sound quality, update to the latest version of iOS.

If you've tried these steps and there's still no sound or poor sound quality from your iPhone, contact Apple Support.

  • Is it possible to know the maximum db output of a pair of headphones based on your laptop volume

Hello all, I just joined the forum on advice from r/audioengineering. I asked this question over there and they thought you would be better to answer.
My question is fairly straightforward (may not be simple).
Is there a way to know the maximum db output of a pair of headphones (such as SONY MDR 7506) at a set system output on a macbook pro (for example 4 bars)?
Ideally I would like to know that the headphones cannot exceed a level (say 75db) no matter what I throw at it. Then I can set the volume level of the mac, and stop worrying about headphone volume for ear damage.
I produce music on my laptop for hours on end and the volume of the sound can vary widely quickly when different effects and sounds are introduced.
I know there are headphones that limit the db output, but the limit is too high (usually 95 or 100 db) from what I have seen.
Thank you for your help (if possible)

This is a difficult question to answer with any exactness as it depends on a number of factors. Program, test phones sensitivity/resistance...meter response/calibration...etc...
I just did a quick measurement on a pair of 7506's using a phonic tool with program (classic rock) at ear cup, unweighted. with program approx. -5 bars on the "volume display" was approx. 75db
With pink noise approx -6 bars about a 75db average (you can subdivide each bar by 4 using shift+option)
    Max w/pink noise 88db.
This was all sourced from iTunes with the volume on iTunes all the way up.
Keep in mind this was quick and dirty, but may give you an idea. As I mentioned before there are a ton of variables involved, and this was done quickly.
    Hope this helps you some.
I should have also mentioned that this is db SPL, and I had the mic in between the cups to iso it from some ambient noise. I don't know if all the machines are alike in output and gain structure.

  • Ipod Nano 6th gen- the volume goes down to zero every time I turn the Ipod on

The volume button is not physically stuck in. I've tried restoring the Ipod but it didn't work. Any suggestions?

OK, then there is little else to do other than to reinstall OS X.
Make sure you removed everything connected to the MBP including any USB devices.
If your Mac came with a System Install DVD, then insert it and hold the c key while starting your Mac. This will boot from the DVD instead of your internal disk.
If you find the grey screen reappears then it may not have restarted from the disc, so try again. You have to get past this step to do anything. If you can't, the problem may be a dirty or damaged DVD or an inoperative optical drive.
When it gets to the Mac OS C Utilities screen, select Disk Utility and repair your hard disk. Record any errors that it finds, since your problem may be due to a failed hard disk. If that is the case, the failure will probably arise again.
Then, reinstall OS X. Reinstalling is non-destructive to your user accounts or data.
If your Mac is running Lion, or Mountain Lion, you can boot OS X Recovery and perform all the above without a disc.
Read about OS X Recovery here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4718

  • "Optimize" a CSV volume

I have a H-V 2012 cluster with 3 nodes.  I use a CSV volume to store the VMs.  I have all the latest patches installed. I have an Equallogic SAN (PS4000) with the latest firmware on it providing the LUN for the CSV.  Everything in my environment is
supposed to support re-thinning (or unmapping, or whatever the right term is) the LUN.  I have about 500 GB of unused space on the 2TB volume, and the volume was thin provisioned.  A restore of some very large vhd files from backup caused the
thin provisioned volume to grow and to use almost the entire volume at one point but the corrupt VHDs have since been deleted.  Now I have "dirty" blocks in the LUN that I want to reclaim into free space on the SAN. This all happens, apparently,
when Server 2012 performs an "Optimize" on the disks.  In my environment this is scheduled to happen once a week.  It did apparently do something this last week, because my volume utilization on the SAN went from 96% to 91%.  Not even
close to reclaiming all dirty blocks, but it's a start I guess.  So now I went in to the "Defragment and Optimize Drives" utility and told it to commence a manual optimization.  Nothing happens and event viewer give me this error:
The volume VMStorage1 (C:\ClusterStorage\Volume1) was not optimized because an error was encountered: CSVFS failed operation as volume is not in redirected mode. (0x8007174F)
    So my questions are these:
Shouldn't it put the CSV in redirect mode if it needs to do this in order to optimize the drive automatically?
If it can't do this automatically, how did it return 5% of the CSV SAN volume to free space last week?
Can I put the volume in redirect mode manually and do the optimize manually? Redirect mode is not supposed to be necessary in 2012 CSV any more- at least not for backup.  Why here?
Will my environment re-thin, Unmap, whatever?  It appears it MIGHT.  Does it take several iterations (ie weeks)?
Can anyone explain this incredibly vague and cloaked process from a Windows server 2012 perspective?
    Thank you for any help!

    Hi,
In CSVv2.0, every effort was made to expand the number of scenarios that would use Direct I/O over Redirected I/O.
Direct I/O delivers faster performance with lower network overhead. Emphasis is on using Direct I/O for all types of file open actions.
Direct I/O uses buffered reads and writes which means it can take advantage of the Windows Cache Manager. As an example, Direct I/O results in better virtual machine creation times and improved copy performance. In CSVv1.0, to get the highest performance
during a copy operation, the destination node had to be the Coordinator node for the destination CSV volume.
CSVv2.0 uses a new algorithm for determine what types of I/O are redirected.
Oplocks are used as a distributed locking mechanism to determine if I/O can go via a direct path.
All of the optimizations and performance improvements are for naught if the file system cannot remain available for the applications to use.
The new file system check and repair capability goes a long way towards ensuring file system availability.
The new file system health-checking model coupled with new functionality in chkdsk helps in this area.
In addition, CSV volumes can take advantage of these new capabilities.

  • Mac OS X Leopard volume messed up

Periodically, the volume on my Mac OS X will just cease to function. When I click the volume up/down buttons on the keyboard, nothing works. It isn't muted (there are still sound curves outside of the megaphone icon that pops up on the screen), but sound still refuses to play. Whenever it does this, there is a circle with a slash through it beneath the volume-dots. Sometimes when it happens, whatever I'm listening to will stutter for awhile and then right itself....but sometimes even pressing the up/down buttons have no effect and sound stops playing all together. This problem tends to occur whenever I unplug my earphones from my laptop. What's going on, and how can I remedy the situation?

It could be a dirty switch in the output jack.
Open System Prefs->Sound and look at output as you plug/unplug your headphones.
The Name should change from Headphones to Internal Speakers.
Usually plugging in and out a few times fixes things.

  • Volnoti - Lightweight Volume Notification

    Hey guys,
Let me share a little piece of code I've put together recently. I'm using XMonad and one thing all the lightweight window managers always lacked was a nice notification when the volume is changed. What I'm specially fond of is the Apple-like notification you can get for example with Compiz. So I took bits and pieces of GNOME's notification-daemon, assembled my own and I present it here to you.
The main point for Volnoti was to be absolutely independent of the system configuration and WM. Therefore, Volnoti doesn't read the volume level itself, but rather waits for someone to tell it what it is. The idea is that the users can attach a script to their hot keys, read the volume level in it and then call Volnoti's client application. It just sends the 0-100 integer to the daemon, which displays the notification (all details in README). Currently, calling the client application is the only way of dealing with the daemon. I guess that it might be handy to create a small library as well, which people could use when writing plugins for volume-control applications. On the other hand, it is possible to just call a UNIX command from C, so there's no actual need for the library at the moment. Feel free to comment on this - I'd be happy to get your feedback.
This is just a first draft, which suits me, but I can imagine that people would appreciate more ways of customizing it. Currently, it is possible to replace all the icons and change the duration of notification (details in README). Let me know, what else you would like to change and I'll add suitable parameters to the daemon. One thing is definitely the level of transparency (if you use composite desktop), other might be the radius of corner rounding. In the future, more sophisticated ways of theming might be added, which would allow to completely change the look of the notifications. For now, it's quite limited...
So please, do look at the screenshots, do give it a try yourself and let me know what you think, whether you have any suggestions, problems, etc. Bugs can be reported on GitHub.

Ah! That's the reason, running "volnoti" fixes the problem and runs just fine with scripts on my PC.

Love it.  I'll look forward to developments for customization, but this is just what I've been looking for for a while as other notification daemons I tried were just bulky and unreliable.
Before I read the rest of the thread I tossed together my own script as well - short and to the point:
    #!/bin/bash
    [[ "$1" == "up" ]] && amixer set Master 5%+
    [[ "$1" == "down" ]] && amixer set Master 5%-
    [[ "$1" == "mute" ]] && amixer sset Master toggle
    VOL=$(amixer get Master | grep Mono: | sed 's|[^[]*\[\([0-9]*\).*|\1|')
    [[ $(amixer get Master | grep "\[off\]") ]] && volnoti-show -m $VOL && exit
    volnoti-show $VOL
I had to fiddle, search and configure your script around to make it to work (to show volnoti info) on my laptop because it uses an "Intel CougarPoint HDMI" chip and "HDA Intel PCH" card. I was able to solve the problem by changing "grep Mono" line to "grep 'Front Left'" or "grep 'Front Right'" (I keep both left/right levels equally same) so that quick'n'dirty fix is just enough for my needs. Hope this helps someone else too.
    Also thanks for the script!

  • HT5642 After installing iOS6.1 my volume buttons dont work as they should how do i fix this!?

As per description - the phone works but the volume buttons do not show the sliding scale of volume and if you try and play music or watch a film etc you cant get sound. If you plug headphones in it works as normal.
any ideas how to fix this please - the 6.1 update caused it

"Cleaning" your phone isn't the solution, it doesn't work, and I don't konw why people keep suggesting this "fix". This is a software issue affecting a small portion of 4s users, and to date no fix. My phone is always clean, it's always updated, and whatever other simple fix you can think of, I've done, still volume issues. A dirty port wouldn't cause the volume slider to disappear. If somone comes up with something that is actually a fix, and not old school Nintendo "blow in it" type advice, I would love to hear it.

  • Time machine backups to remote volumes

    Hi all,
Been having trouble with backing up a Lion system onto a remote (network) volume.  The idea is basically to back up a (client) Mac onto a disk hosted by another Mac (the backup server).
I can get the initial backup to work:
    1. share the disk to back up to on the backup server via File Sharing, and ensure to use an administrator account at the client Mac to log onto in order for it to see the backup disk.
    2. mount the backup disk over the network onto the client Mac.
    3. get Time Machine to select that network disk as a backup disk.
    4. start the backup.
All this works, and I am left with a good initial backup.  However, subsequent backups fail with the following message after the client Mac is next rebooted:
The syslog shows some rather perculiar difficulty in managing its backup disks:
    15/12/11 11:44:31.309 PM com.apple.backupd: Starting standard backup
15/12/11 11:44:31.436 PM com.apple.backupd: Attempting to mount network destination URL: afp://Tony%20Kavadias@L%C3%B3rien._afpovertcp._tcp.local/Rivendell

    15/12/11 11:48:33.630 PM com.apple.backupd: Backup failed with error: 21
More digging around leads to the observation that /Volumes/Rivendell-1 (the filesystem that Time Machine mounts from the backup server) is now stuck and cannot be unmounted—to get rid of it, I have to reboot the client Mac.  And that the sparse disk image file Annuminas.sparsebundle is mounted read-only when Time Machine attempts to mount it for writing subsequent backups to!
The only way I can recover is to erase the backup and start another initial one, but that defeats the purpose of having a continuously running Time Machine backup.
The client Mac is running Mac OS X 10.7.2 Lion, while the backup server is running Mac OS X 10.6.8 Snow Leopard.  The latter is really just using AFP services to export a disk to the network, whereas Lion is using Time Machine to make backups on the network disk.
Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated.  Many thanks,
    —tonza

Oh... discovered something odd... the Time Machine Backups volume (that is the volume that is mounted from the Annuminas.sparseimage file on the fileserver) is being mounted read-only!
/dev/disk0s2 on / (hfs, local, journaled)
devfs on /dev (devfs, local, nobrowse)
map -hosts on /net (autofs, nosuid, automounted, nobrowse)
map auto_home on /home (autofs, automounted, nobrowse)
    afp_000000004oMw0oYHtK1bbUQr-1.2d000004 on /Volumes/Rivendell (afpfs, nobrowse)
/dev/disk1s2 on /Volumes/Time Machine Backups (hfs, local, nodev, nosuid, read-only)
How is Time Machine going to write to a read-only volume?!  This is not making any sense!
If there is one thing I do know about the BSD kernel is that filesystems are mounted read-only if it has been detected by the filesystem driver that a volume is marked dirty or corrupt.  Another thing I'll do is check via Disk Utility that Time Machine Backups needs to be fixed.  If Time Machine is indeed making faulty sparse images, it may be due to Snow Leopard's AFP server after all.
