Disable 2nd monitor when undocking?

I posted this before but nobody replied so maybe I need to simplify it.
When I hit the eject button on my ThinkPad dock it turns off everything on the dock (including USB) except for DVI, which then causes Windows 7 to set both monitors to Duplicate at 1024x768. I just want it to disable the DVI monitor and go back to laptop monitor instead.
Is there a way to do this? I don't know why it keeps the DVI monitor going when the dock is ejected. Thanks.

Can somebody familiar with the dock please reply to this?
Hint: use Win+P to view monitor configurations.
When I press the undock button, it switches to Duplicate and both monitors (one DVI) show 1024x768 (even though all USB connections disconnect).

  • Losing connection to 2nd monitor when iMac sleeps

I have a 2nd monitor connected to my 21" iMac (late 2013) with Mavericks via displayport/thunderbolt port to HDMI. I had the same one with the same link connected to my old 2010 Macbook Pro, and I never saw this.
What happens is when the computer goes to sleep, all of the windows on the second screen move to the iMac, and my Wacom tablet even goes from being mapped to ONLY my second monitor to being only mapped to the iMac!
This is kind of driving me crazy, and I have searched and Googled and just can't find a solution.
Any ideas would be rad. Thanks.

  • Disable second monitor when not in use

Topic says it....I'm using SwitchResX and for the most part it works ok...I have a second monitor that I use sometimes...I'd like an app that I can just say "disable the second monitor" so that it will not show up in Display Prefs, AND will go into power sleep mode...anyone seen anything like this?  Thanks all.

According to this thread, SwitchResX allows you to do exactly what you're looking for.  It's right on the webpage:
You can disable or deactivate a monitor without having to physically unplug it, allowing you to use a laptop in clamshell mode with external monitor, keyboard and mouse

  • How does Mavericks handle 2nd monitor differently?

Since I upgraded to Mavericks, I have liked having a 2nd task bar on my 2nd monitor.
But I haven't figured out how it decides where to put pop up windows.    Sometimes they are on one monitor, other times on the other.   How does it decide?
And I have one application (SimpleFloatingClock) that used to start up on my 2nd monitor when I reboot, but now starts off on the 1st monitor (where it would boot up when I have to reboot without my 2nd monitor - which in the past has been at the Genius Bar).

I like to have my iTunes on one monitor, but use my iMac's display for other work.   But when the iMac's display is active, I get a window from my iTunes behind my browser (or whatever) that I'm using on my iMac.    I liked it the old way when it popped up in front of my iTunes and could see it.

  • When using 2 monitors, Finder always displays on primary monitor even after dragging to 2nd monitor.

How can I set Finder to display to 2nd monitor.  I drag it to the second monitor, but it still display on primary monitor when next opened.

Thank you for your reply. No other program behaves this way, even PhotoShop CS4. It is related to how the program handles OS events.
It is probably a problem with the Windows WM_GETMINMAXINFO and WM_SIZE handlers. My guess is that program stores the maximized size (and it always fills the screen at start-up) and it query to see if it is dragged to a larger screen.
Of course, this theory doesn't address the disappearing program behavior when maximized on the secondary monitor. Since I don't have another OS, I cannot check if it is Vista related or Windows related. Because of the difference in architecture, I'd be surprised if it happened on a Mac, too.

  • Disabling Spaces & Expose on 2nd Monitor

Does anyone know if there is a way to disable spaces and expose on a 2nd monitor? I want the 2nd screen to run a keynote presentation and not be affected by my activities on the first screen.
    Thanks,
    Pete

Having played around with the two monitor configuration for a few days now, I realized that what I really need is a way to make them run independent of each other, essentially running the second monitor as a separate tv monitor for movies and slide shows. So far I haven't found a way to do this.
Also, whenever I play a Keynote presentation, it takes over both screens in one way or another and Apple didn't seem to have any idea of a way to change this. Is there a different way I could connect them that might make them more independent of each other?

That is how Apple designed those iMacs. The Intel-based iMacs were the first iMacs to allow extended desktop.

  • HT1338 cannot connect my MacBook Air to a projector  -does not detect and 2nd monitor. I have a new Mini port to VGA cable made by apple. When I read online I see that many people have the same problem - Is this an Apple defect??????????????????

I cannot connect my MacBook Air to a projector - It will not detect a 2nd monitor or display. I am using an Apple made Mini Display port to VGA adapter. As I read online I see that many other peple are having the same problem. Is this an Apple defect!!???? If so it just burst the bubble about how great macs are. I never had a problem with that on a PC. I hope I am wrong. What can you tell me?

    Hi There,
I have had the exact same issue but with a projector.
The issue lies with Mountian Lion 10.8.2.
I tried many a combination with no luck to get HDMI working.
Took my mac into the apple store and came to the conclusion it was the software, so I asked them to install 10.8 onto it (this is destructive so a backup is a must)
Bought my macbook home and voila, now displaying through my projector.
There is a small graphics update after 10.8.1 which seems to be the cause.
    Hope this helps.
    Thanks.

  • 10.8.1 disables monitors when rebooting in 10.6.8

I just updated Mountain Lion to 10.8.1, When I reboot in my preferred OS (still 10.6.8), I lose the Apple Cinema Display driver and another driver for a cheaper Hanns-G monitor. Before updating to 10.8.1, while in 10.6.8 both monitors worked fine (for years). Each OS is installed on different volumes.
Today that changed. Before I rebooted into 10.8 I had two working monitors when booted in 10.6.8. After updating 10.8 to 10.8.1 I had 2 working monitors in 10.8.1. When I set my startup disk to be 10.6.8 the drivers appear lost (the Apple display works, but with a different looking driver) and the Hanns-G monirot is on, but black!
To test if the monitor was actually working I rebooted into 10.8.1 and both monitors were fine. When rebooted to 10.6.8, the Hanns-G was on, but black.
Does anyone have any idea what's happened? I don't understand how one OS can somehow affect another, even though they both reside on different volumes on different hard drives.
    Thanks,
    MartyP

Turns out I had to delete from both the Applications folder and an external drive that had a copy of the installer on it.  Update notification didn't disappear until I deleted both, emptied trash, and ejected the external drive.

  • Using 2nd Monitor Doesn't Reset When Switching To 1 Monitor Only

FF4 was displayed on my 2nd monitor off of my laptop.
I then powered-down and removed the 2nd monitor hookup.
After rebooting with only the laptop monitor, FF4 opens (twice) with only a tiny window just large-enough to display the red-yellow-green buttons. Fortunately, upon clicking the green button, it expands into a normal window.
    Just an FYI.

    It's a LacieIIblueIV monitor.
I delieted the files any still doesn't work.
I recall one coworker encountering this before, and he switched the monitor connection to the other output on the graphics card (dual monitor support) and it worked fine for him. Unfortuantely I tried this and still didn't work...

  • 2nd Monitor won't work

I bought a Pavillion p6210f last week with Win7 loaded to replace my Dell/Vista.  I was using two monitors with a VGA port and DVI port on the old PC, so I tried plugging in the same on my new HP and the DVI would not fit.  In examining the pins I found that, althought the Manual said DVI, but the plug has the pin/bar arrangement of a DVI-D.   So, I bought a VGAto DVI-D adapter and everything plugged in snuggly.  All pins and bar appear a match.
But, it won't work.  This is what is showing
NVIDIA nForce Serial ATA Controller   HP RC Mirror Driver [Display adapter]
    NVIDIA GeForce 9100 [Display adapter]
    Acer P241W [Monitor] (24.0"vis, s/n LB4040014320, March 2008)the one working monitor....
After hours with the 800 support and hours of reversing the two Acer monitors, the DVI-D port is simply dead.  Anything plugged in to the VGA works fine, anything and any combination plugged into the DVI-D and cable switching etc. the 2nd monitor  is not even recoginized.  The NVIDIA control panel doesn't recognize it. The amber power light just stays that way and nothing ever flashes on the 2nd screen.  That is, it is the same as not plugging in at all.
I was less than pleased when 800 tech and supervisor suggested I take it to a repair center.  A week old?  I have put way too much setup and data transfer into the new HP to go back to the retailer for a replacement.
Techs didn't know, but could there be a DVI-X with the same pins that also fits

  • Thinkpad T440s freezes with 2nd monitor via dock

Hi there - I have a strange problem with my Thinkpad T440s:
Connecting a 2nd monitor directly (VGA) works like a charm, however putting the Thinkpad into the docking station (with the 2nd monitor connected to the dock) freezes the system. Without the 2nd monitor the dock is working fine. When booting with the 2nd monitor connected to the dock, both screens stay black as soon as the kernel loads.
Is this a known problem / any ideas? Can I somehow help fixing this problem?
I know that I'm not the only one since I have found other people reporting this here: http://thinkpad-forum.de/threads/165520 … -und-Linux
They also provided an xorg.log (http://pastebin.com/Qk7nHVwt) which shows nothing suspicious, I guess...

Same issue with my T440p. Happens with VGA, DP & HDMI (haven't tested DVI) on the dock. Undocking unfreezes it. If X is running the X server freezes and consumes 20% CPU, if none is running a kworker process does that. Even with no monitor attached it will freeze when the builtin monitor wakes up from sleep (again, undocking helps).
Here's a stack trace from the frozen X (^C'd while it was frozen from waking up the display, gdb only reacted again after undocking):

Edit: "Solved" by returning the laptop. This issue plus the loud (and not well-controllable) fan and the lack of support for the fingerprint sensor (different from previous ThinkPad models, it's from Validity Sensors) just aren't worth the trouble.

  • Premiere 5.5 taking over Second Monitor when minimized

I am using a second monitor as an HD Fullscreen preview for Premiere 5.5. It has this annoying habit of taking over the second monitor (whatever frame I happened to be parked on) while the program is minimized. The only way to get back cotnrol of the monitor is to maximize then send to the background again. This is very annoying when you are operating back and forth between Pr and Ae or trying to do anything else on the second monitor.
It seems to happen when it auto saves (which I have set at 5 minutes.. Yeah, I'm paranoid). I have the "Disable video output when in background" button selected, so what gives? This is the second Premiere 5.5 set-up I've had with this issue.
    Thanks for any feedback!
And yes, the fullscreen video preview popped up THREE times while I was composing this message.

Then download this Intel driver and install first. Then run the Nvidia driver after restart.
    https://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=Y&ProdId=3319&DwnldID=23377&ProductF amily=Graphics&ProductLine=Laptop+graphics+drivers&ProductProduct=2nd+Generation+Intel%c2% ae+Core%e2%84%a2+Processors+with+Intel%c2%ae+HD+Graphics+3000%2f2000&DownloadType=Drivers& OSFullname=Windows+7+(64-bit)*&lang=eng
Once you have that done open the Nvidia control panel on Restart. Select manage 3D settings. See if you see a Preferred GPU or Graphics card drop down on the right. If so select the Nvidia or performance option. I forget what is exactly said there. That is the Optimus control and will make sure the Nvidia GPU is used most often. That keeps the anomalies you are getting now when the video is switching to the Intel Adapter when you minimize Adobe. If that doesnt work then there may not be a fix for this beyond disabling the Intel adapter.
