Disable a single key on macbook4.1 keyboard

i have to disable one single key on the keyboard, cause it's permanently pressed.... is that possible?

This changed as of Mountain Lion (so you must be upgrading from Lion or earlier).  Now when you press and hold a key, you can choose alternative characters for those, i.e. ñ ê ü.
So it's by design.  I don't know if it's possible to revert to auto-repeat.
But awww is fine ;-)

  • Desparate for a single key on left side of keyboard that serves as DELETE

I am running a MacBook Pro on 10.5.8 using Microsoft Word 2008. My right arm has aching tendonitis and enabling my left hand to delete stuff would help a ton.
Thus, I desparately need a single-key (not function+key or command+key) that DELETES letters or words in Word, that sits on the far side of the keyboard. I'd give up fn, or `, or even capslock. **** even tab!
I've tried DoubleCommand. It will remap delete onto the CapsLock key but then only deletes a character every other key press (apparently only works when capslock turns ON). This *****.
KeyRemap4MacBook says it will remap ` to DELETE but that simply does not work in Word. It can also remap fn to Command_L but that also doesn't work (yes, I assigned Command_L to DeleteWord in Word's keyboard shortcuts).
I am desparate to keep writing and save my right arm's tendons! Please help!!
    Thanks.

You should be able to reassign one of the F1~ series keys via the
Keyboard and Mouse system preference panel; or maybe if not in
there, see the Univeral Access; you may be able to also use an
option by the name of Mouse Keys.
There also may be some other possibility, since there are folks
out there who have used two mice; and other set-ups. Even a
few who have used their feet to control their computers.
A way to use a Script (automator) to create a means to select/delete
words would be one consideration; however it may launch improperly.

The DoubleCommand app supposedly has a way to make the Caps Lock
button work as a Delete key, according to reader posts on this topic who
had been using a MacBook computer and needed a left-side Delete key.
{An issue exists in assigning a key to do a different function, when some
    other Application needs that key, as-is (or as-was) to perform tasks in it.}
However, the native means of re-assigning a key function in Sys Pref>
Keyboard & Mouse panel, or some workaround in Universal Access
may be something you can customize or use directly.
The topic has been discussed in these user boards before your post:

While I haven't really looked into this, there should be more than a few
ways of making a left-side Delete key out of some other key, in the OS.
Perhaps someone with more key assigning experience has better ideas?
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Disable / Remove Control Key From Pop-Up Virtual Keyboard

Hello. I am setting up a kiosk system using Microsoft Surface tablets. I wish to use the win8 virtual keyboard along with chrome in kiosk mode to run a web app. I am trying to edit the Keyboard Mapping in registry, which works with the physical keyboard
but not with the virtual one. All I need to do is disable the control key so users can't do anything with browser shortcuts. Also, I can't just disable them in JS because the browser captures them before they even reach the js engine.
    Thanks!

    Hi,
On Screen  Keyboard is one application that is used to simulate the keyboard to send the Key Events to system. It is not a physical keyboard but a built-in tool,
After a lot of research, I am afraid there isn’t a solid way of disabling the Windows key on virtual keyboard, including the control key.
Besides, Kiosk mode is  available for Internet Explorer according to the link below, and it is available for Internet Explorer 11 after a test:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/154780
Another thing is, it fails to start the Kiosk mode with Chrome after remove Internet Explorer from the control panel, I tried with a test.

  • Satellite Z830 - Remove/change single keys from keyboard

    Hi,
some keys on the keyboard of my Z830 keyboard became sticky over time.
Is it possible to remove single keys, try to clean it and put the key back in, or is the key glued?
I wouldn't want to replace the whole keyboard, as most of the keys still work fine.
    Thanks

Keyboard keys are not glued and keyboard caps can be removed. It was extremely easy on older keyboards and I have done it many times.
I don't have experience with new keyboards but the principle should be the same.
Take some flat plastic and try to remove keycap but be very gently.
I think you are the first one with this question so it will be very nice if you can post some feedback or short instruction how it can be done.

  • Disable Play/ Pause Keys on Apple Keyboards in Aperture

Hi, I'm looking for a way to make Aperture not start a slideshow using the play/ pause key on the Apple keyboards.
It's really annoying when you want to play/pause song in iTunes - Aperture stars slideshow.
Is there some solution to disable Aperture media keys?

    Tricky One oO
The only way I can use the play/pause key is when using Ecoute to listen to the iTunes library. And only by pressing altshiftF8...
In Ecoute you can define your own shortcuts which don't interfere with iTunes.
    Try:
    ctrlcmdspace -> play/pause
    ctrlcmdleft -> previous track
    ctrlcmdright -> next track

  • How to disable "special" f-key function on Apple Wireless Keyboard in Windows 7

Hi.  I dual-boot my iMac using an Apple Wireless Keyboard.  In Mac OS's "Keyboard" system preference pane, I've chosen to treat the F-keys as actual F-keys, and not the "special" function keys, such as volume control and screen brightness.  This however does not carry over to the Windows environment.
I cannot find an option to do this on the Windows 7 side.  I've tried SharpKeys (popular Windows freeware key-mapping registry editor), however the program doesn't recognize the key being pushed (unless I hold the "Fn" key, at which point, it sees it as the F# key).
To reiterate, I'd like to know how to use the F1 through F12 keys as F1-F12 in Windows 7, without having to use the "Fn" key.

If you would like to use your Apple keyboard in Boot Camp with the standard function keys as the default, you may find the following article helpful:

  • How can I permanently disable the "fn" key?

Hi.  My subject says it all.  How can I permanently disable the "fn" key?
At first I thought I had a virus or something because when I typed only weird symbols came out.  Then I reset the computer.  Then I couldn't even log in.  I tried Time Machine etc.
Then I realized that the "fn" key wasn't working right.  It seems to be working backwards.  It acts like it's being pushed when it's not, and when I do push it it acts like it's not being used.
So it's kind of a simple problem but it's really annoying.
Is there a way I can just disable it permanently?  Even physical force if necessary.  I tried to break it but it wouldn't break.  I don't really use the key anyway so it doesn't really matter.  I don't want to pay a bunch of money to replace a key I don't even use.
    Thanks.  I hope someone knows.

That's the best answer.  Yeah usually if you press "fn" or "option" you can get it to work for awhile.
Yeah I have considered some kind of external keyboard also.  It will make a laptop less laptopish.  But it could do the job for awhile.
It's sad because I don't even care about the "fn" or "option" keys.
But anyway it's not catastrophic at least.
And yeah maybe we can get a new computer later or something.  I like mine though.  It's customized and is how I like it right now.
    Anyway thanks for the reply.

  • How do you disable the shortcut key in Mail that deletes all mail in the trash folder

Is there a way to disable the shortcut key in Mail in Mountain Lion that deletes all mail in the Trash folder in all accounts: <shift><command><delete> ?
I did it once by mistake and it deleted all my trash - it is very difficult to restore when there are thousands of messages in various emaiil accounts.
    Thanks

While you can't (so far as I know) remove it - you can assign a different (& less likely to be used accidentally) one via System Preferences - Keyboard - Shortcuts.
Go there, create a new one (or 2) for Mail only, and give it the exact name(s) if the menu item(s) in question, capitalisation & ... included.
Below is on 10.6, but the idea's the same

Hello, I am attempting to disable my backquote key.  (The ` / ~ key, at the very top left of the keyboard)
Is there any way to do this?  I've tried the third-party app "Karabiner," however no such option exists, and I am unsure how to properly edit the included 'private.xml' to achieve the desired effect.

    Hi,

I see that you are having some problems accessing your BIOS. F10 doesn't work with Windows 8. If you scroll down in your own link it mentions that to access the BIOS you need to go to your Advanced Options and then select Troubleshooting and then the UEFI Firmware Settings. That will bring you to the BIOS. This is all under Accessing UEFI BIOS section of your link. There you can Disable the Function Keys.

  • Completely disable a specifict key {solved...kinda}

{Solved} ---> since i couldn't find a way to solve my problem i decided to remove the keyboard and manually cut off the connection of the key, i am glad to say it actually worked and that it seems the rest of my keyboard isn't going haywire i am a bit....dissapointed that i wasn't able to find a more....elegant way to do so (not cutting the key off, for example) but, it works.
    thanks to all of you who read my post}
My keyboard's(laptop) "Left" key is broken (due to a water related incident) so i am trying to find a way to completely disable it. I kinda found one using "xmodmap -e 'keycode #=NoSignal' and that solves most of my problem, normally there are no problems and i would be able to type whatever i desire without issues. The problem arises when i have to modify some file for one reason or another from the terminal and i have to go into SU mode, it ask for a password but for some reason my left key "reactivates"  it isn't actually moving my cursor but inserting some other text. It also bothers me when im trying to select something in a right click menu(or any sort of menu that allows for keyboard based selection) that has sub menus in it. I verify xev and indeed even if its not actually doing what it should (for example moving my cursor as a type) it is still stuck (aka spam as if i was holding it).
So i wonder if there is a method to completely disable my left key?
    apologies for the bad grammar.

First, think really hard about why you want to disable the PK. If it turns out that you really must change the PK, then do this:
    1. drop the primary key.
    2. recreate the PK with the DEFERRABLE INITIALLY DEFERRED clause.
This will cause the PK to be created with a non-unique index so that if you disable the PK, you will not get an ORA-1 exception. It will also defer checking and enforcing the PK until you commit. This could eliminate the need to disable/enable the PK.

  • Satellite P300 - One Key not working on keyboard

    Hi all,
Does anyone have a suggested solution to fix a key not working on my laptop? One letter on my keyboard "the letter b" has stopped working.
    Laptop is Satellite P300- "PSPCA-01U013"
    Thanks :)

    Hi Ricco1,
The problem is that single keys cant be replaced so if a certain key doesnt work its time to replace the whole keyboard but dont worry, new keyboards are not so expensive. Just get in contact with an authorized service provider and ask for a new keyboard, the guys are able to order a new one and they can replace it for you if cant do this yourself.
Here you can find a list of all ASPs:

  • Single key has stopped working

    HI,
the #'s on the right hand side of the keyboard have stopped working, and when you push one of the buttons it brings up a find it search bar on internet explorer or just beeps. I've tried num lock, scroll lock, and keyboard options in the control panel. I don't knw wat else to do.
    Can anyone help?
    Thank You

    Hi annanel,
    > when you push one of the buttons it brings up a find it search bar on internet explorer
Maybe you have a virus on the computer? You should run your antivirus and search for viruses.
Furthermore if a single key has stopped working you have only one option for repair and this is exchanging the whole keyboard because single keys cant be exchanged.
You can get a new keyboard from an authorized service provider and they can also exchange the keyboard for you. :)
