Disable address bar auto-complete?

I see by searching that this problem goes back 4 years. Have they seriously not added a simple checkbox to turn this feature on and off? Adding a space before typing a URL is an effective workaround if you have to remember it EVERY TIME you type in the address bar. Does anyone know a better workaround?

Did anyone ever discover the fix or solution to this?  I am trying to solve this as well. Turning on privacy. Clearly cache, browser history, autofill, etc. none of them seem to fix the issue that as soon as you start typing something in the URL field of the browser, it starts flashing a bunch of websites that might closely match what you might type in. Very annoying and disruptive.

  • Awesome Bar: auto-complete suggestion does not remember port number from URL

I visit URLs with non-standard ports all the time such as http://localhost:8080.
When I start typing "localhost" into the address bar, the Awesome Bar suggests only "http://localhost" - i.e. WITHOUT the port 8080 - instead of suggesting the full URL including the port.
I never visit "localhost" without port 8080 so that entry should not even be in my history at all.
The Awesome Bar should always remember port numbers when making suggestions.

Unfortunately that doesn't work. Even with the URL bookmarked, typing "local" to begin the autocomplete still results in the URL being auto-completed without a port number.
Typing the name of the bookmark itself results in no auto-complete at all, meaning you still have to press the down arrow before hitting "return" to get to the correct URL. So you're back at square one.

I created a custom address like Fax:Winnie@/FN=333 in my tab environment, it returned an error about “The address ‘Fax:Winnie@/FN=333’ is not a valid SMTP address”. Please update your Global Address List in Exchange server and if there is any error log,

  • Disable Address Bar Autocomplete?

    Hi everyone,
Just wondering if there is a way to disable the autocomplete (as you type) in the address bar of Safari. I'd still like URLs to be saved, but I don't want it to fill in the address as I type.
Sorry if this is a silly question, I'm new to Macs.
    Regards,
    David.

    You're welcome. Glad to help.
I don't think hacking is the answer, as there are a multitude of files involved. There really ought to be a disable option, however, it may not be that simple given the integration with History, Bookmarks, Cache files etc. Perhaps Safari 3 will offer something different.

  • Turning Off Address Bar Auto-Fill

I do not want the address bar to auto fill. How do I turn it off.

Tom .. No, I was just using google. Not http etc.
I really think that was enough last week. We messed with some of
the network settings lately in an attempt to set up ethernet connection
to old machine. I bet that is what changed things.
Yang .. I did what you said. No Joy! Thanks anyway.
How does this work for other tiger users?
Maybe I'm wrong about it working last week?
Typing .com every time isn't the end of the world. But
it would be nice if the Imac would do it.

  • How do I Delete an Email Address from Auto Complete in iPad iOS mail

How can I remove old/unwanted/incorrect email addresses, (which have never been in my contacts list or which have been superseded because they were wrong)?
Every time I start writing an email address I get this list of suggestions of any similar addresses I have ever used - many of which are either wrong or not wanted & have never even been in my Contacts list! Its really annoying as the "wrong" ones are usually near the top of the list!!
    Regards,
    Robin
PS none of these addresses have been "imported" from another computer!

The only way that I currently know of to remove old or incorrect email addresses is to restore the device back to factory defaults, which is somewhat extreme. You can try leaving feedback, and hopefully one day we'll get a way of editing them http://www.apple.com/feedback/ipad.html

  • How can I delete old email addresses from auto complete?

Hello to everyone on this great forum,
I have been having trouble trying to find out how to delete the old typed email history. For an example, if I go to send a picture to Bob, I start typing Bob and it comes up with 3 old emails of his. Not a big deal except it's hard to keep track of what emails are current.
In other words, after deleting the old emails in the contacts it still shows up when I start typing a person's name.
    Any help would be great,
    Thx
    Jon

you cannot do this unless you restore your phone as a NEW device.

  • I cannot get rid of the history in my address bar.

Whenever I click the down arrow on the address bar a list of sites appears. I can not delete them. If I try hovering my mouse over them and pressing delete on the keyboard they come back the next time I hit the down arrow. They also won't go away when I clear history.

The same problem has been dogging me for a couple of months and I think I may have the solution. The address bar auto-complete includes addresses from you bookmarks. If the one you delete is there because it was bookmarked at some time in the past, you won't be able to delete it from the address bar directly. Go to Bookmarks/Organize and search for the offending site address. Edit it or delete it from there and it should fix the problem. It may be in the "Most Visited" section of the bookmarks.

  • Tiger Mail to Leopard Mail - Auto Complete Addresses?

    Hi there,
I've recently backed up my friend's complete Home folder from Tiger, along with all other Tiger assets required to hopefully make a smooth migration to Leopard.
    NERD SCENARIO:
Apple Mail: My friend relied heavily on "Automatically complete addresses" in Apple Mail, otherwise known as Automatic Addressing, aka: auto complete TO: email addresses when typing a name. Unfortunately, when migrating to Leopard, he has now lost auto addressing after I migrated his old email (Inbox, Sent, Deleted, etc.) He's savvy, but not savvy enough to know to add his recipients to his Apple Address Book -- therefore Leopard Mail is only auto completing recent mail within this past week. I'm now trying to inform him to begin adding people to his Address Book so this doesn't happen again -- but it might be too late? He used to rely heavily on Auto Addressing to remember email addresses prior.
    TRANSLATION:
    1. How can I pull date or history from my backed up Mail folder from Tiger to import back into Leopard so "Auto Addressing" will remember email addresses prior?
    2. Did I not backup his mail correctly? I burned an almost exact mirror of his hard drive to a DVD.
    3. Has he lost his ability to auto address old email addresses? Since he didn't add them to his Address Book?
    Thanks for any help!

I just did the same thing, transferring all my data from Tiger to a new Leopard MacBook Pro, and now I can't access ANY of my addresses from my old address book, even tho I can see all the data sitting in Library... How the heck do I get the hundreds of addresses into my new address book? And, why won't my new Mail pick up all the Auto-Complete addresses from the old program if I transferred everything over?

  • Why is the email address in the To: box red when auto-completed from Address Book?

    Linux TB31.0
Not aware of this problem in prior issues!
Problem occurs when starting to type receipient in "To" box.
Have "Home Address Book" no "Personal Address Book" no "Collected Addresses".
Should I export and rename "Home Address Book" then import it back in as "Personal Address Book" to be properly recognized by the auto-completion "To" entry?

Have tried to eliminate possibility of corrupt *.mab files by exporting personal address book to another folder as *.ldif, then closed TB, then deleted all *.mab files in profile directory, then restarted TB, then imported the *.ldif into TB as my personal address book.
TB recognises addresses but auto complete still insists on marking "To" text to red.
    Thanks for responding anyways.
    Partial Fix!!
The following workaround provides a way to ignore addressbook match:- Go to Edit/Preferences/Advanced/General/Config_Edit Search for 'mail.autoComplete.highlightNonMatches' set it to 'false' This worked for me on Xubuntu.

  • Address Bar Not Working

The address bar in my version of Firefox 28 does not seem to be working at all. The address bar seems to work perfectly, however when you press enter nothing happens. It can detect your bookmarks and history but when you click on those nothing happens as well. So the address bar is completely useless.
I tried reinstalling but that didn't work, I then tried a factory reset and that worked for a while, however just a day later the problem has resurfaced. I started firefox with all addons disabled but that didn't make a difference either, I then disabled every addon one by one while reopening firefox multiple times to try and see of there was a troublesome addon but that didn't make a difference either.
I am running the Linux version of firefox under OpenSUSE 13.1, the exact version from the about screen is 28.0, "Firefox for OpenSUSE OpenSUSE - 13.1" is also displayed on the about screen.
I am sorry if I have not included enough information, If you need more I will be happy to add it.

  • How can I copy text as-is from the address bar?

    Hi there,
I use numerous username/password combinations to log onto an ftp site in the following form:
    ftp://fairlyShortUsername:[email protected]
    E.g. ftp://moduleFour:[email protected]
Using this method allows me to log straight in because username and password are stored right inside the url.
Due to their convenience, it is useful to be able to pass these links around to others.
If I start typing the username (e.g. 'moduleF'...) in the address bar, the complete URL appears in the autocomplete suggestions and I can use the down arrow to display it in the address bar and copy it to the clipboard.
However, when I paste what I copied (taking the above example), I just get ftp://ftp.site.com. This is no use to anyone without the information that has been stripped out.
I'm not concerned with security (understandably, given that I'm using urls with plain text passwords).
I'm sure firefox is just trying to be 'helpful', but is there any way I can copy the exact text displayed at the time I press Ctrl + C, without firefox interfering? At the moment, I have to look up the username and password and paste them into a url template every time, which given the number of times I've done it, has already taken up more time of my life than it's taken me to write this question, which is why I'm asking.
*** NOTE: Changing the value of browser.urlbar.trimURLs and browser.urlbar.formatting.enabled has *not* allowed me to fix this. ***

Okay, I think one of these add-ons is just what you need.
    Go to the '''[https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/ Mozilla Add-ons Web Page]''' {web link}
(There’s a lot of good stuff here) and search for what you want.
    '''[https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/my-copyfixer My CopyFixer ]''' {web link}
Use Ctrl+C when nothing selected to copy page title and url in
    various format (template base).
    '''[https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/send-tab-urls/ Send Tab URLs]''' {web link}
Send a list of browser tab URLs to email, Web mail, or the clipboard

I am having the same problem on my IPad.  It appears these old email addresses are saved in the memory and from what I read, there is no way to delete them regardless if you delete the contact.  Hopefully in a future update that can be resolved.  It is very annoying though.

  • Can't disable Web Address Auto-complete in Safari nor Firefox

    Hi there,
I am trying to disable the web address auto-complete in order to access my Intranet Server. I tried configuration inside Web Browser (firefox) but doesn't work. Seems to be system configuration since is the same with Safari. If I enter the address http://myserver:8080 always autocompletes to http://www.myserver.com:8080 and can't access the Intranet web server...
Thanks in advance for the help.
    Pepe
    Mac OSX 10.6.2

Safari and Firefox, both have a configuration utility to solve this. In Firefox, writing about:config in the address bar and look for the features that contains the prefix www and the suffix .com, clear those two fields and that's it.
So, the problem was browser related, not system related.
    Thanks
