Disable application switch to browser after clicking link in Mail

When I click a link in an email message, my Mac automatically switches to my browser (Firefox) to view the linked page. How can I have the link open in the background but stay in Mail?
I would like to be able to click links in email messages but keep reading email and then later switch to my browser to view all the links in my web browser.
Any hints?

This will work most of the time. I don't know how it's done, but it is possible for the link, or the message containing it, to force it to open in front of Mail even with the command key held down.

  • Firefox is playing mp3/wav after clicking links to it instead of showing dialog for play/download

Firefox trying to play wavs/mp3s after clicking link to it instead of showing dialog to open/download. In preferences in applications tab I've selected "always ask" in wav and mp3 file types, but it didn't solve this problem.
    == This happened ==
    Every time Firefox opened
    == I am unsure

Go to about:config (click "I'll be careful, I promise")
    Find plugin.disable_full_page_plugin_for_types
Right click on the line of text and click Modify
If there is no value in there then enter audio/mpeg
If there are already values add ,audio/mpeg at the end (comma is important)
    Click OK
    Restart Firefox
Now clicking on an mp3 will ask where to download

  • IOS 7 problem after going to dodgy website after clicking link

Hi. I need to totally reset my iPhone 4 (iOS 7) after clicking link to dodgy website. Not something I normally do. Now having problems with phone. Thinking reset may help. How is this done?
    Thanks

Tunes froze when I upgraded to 10.2.1.1 after recently acquiring a 3rd generation Nano to replace my 1st generation that wouldn't reset. It's all working now after uninstalling 10.2.1.1 and then installing 10.1.2. I had to delete "iTunes Library.itl" for iTunes to load. I then had add my folder to get back all my Poscasts and then re-subscribe to my relevant podcasts. After this I upgraded back to 10.2.1.1 and everything is sweet . So effectively I rebuilt my "iTunes Library.itl" file - I suspect that this file became corrupted either during the iTunes upgrade and/or introducing mt new iPod Nano and/or something else.

When I click links in Mail, it opens Safari, I don't want that, I want Firefox to open, how do I change the default?
I saw no options in either Mail (4.6) or in System Preferences. Very annoying since I never chose that.

  • When on ebay or craigslist after clicking link then returning to site last link should be highlighted to save your place

saving your place after clicking a link should be highlighted

That is dependent upon how the webpage is coded - when you "go back" content is from the cache or "no-cache" content. IMO, a better way of handling that is to get in the habit of opening hyperlinks in a new tab, and when you are done viewing the content in the tab close the tab, and the page where you started will be as you left it. Once again, whether the hyperlinks show a "visited" will depend upon how the page is coded - many webpages need to be refreshed to display "visited" hyperlinks. The big advantage to opening hyperlinks in a tab is that your position on the page won't change, because you aren't "going back".

  • Clicking link in mail opens a new tab, not a new window

When clicking on a link in AppleMail, after a recent update, opens a tab in a random window or perhaps the top window in Safari.  Until this update, clicking on the link used to open a new window.  This is driving me nuts.  I am getting links from mail opening in a new tab in Safari windows I reserve for specific topics, or uses.  I do not want unrelated mail links opening and interfering with work in these existing browser windows.  Also, when I see the link from mail is not wanted, I too often close the window like I usually do, but now inadvertently close a Safari window with multiple tabs of important information, that I have trouble recreating.  Where did this come from!?  How do I change it so a new window opens?

I was having the same problem and finally figured out how to change this bahavior.  Go to Safari preferences under the 'Tabs' settings.  Make sure the field "Open pages in tabs instead of windows" is set to NEVER.  That should do the trick.

  • Double clicking links in Mail 4.5 fails to open in browser

Ths suddenly started today after updating Security and Safari.  I'm running 10.6.8 on a Mac Pro and using Mail and Firefox 12.0  When receiving a link in the body of an email a single or double click only achieves a darkening of the Mail window, but the action is NOT forwarded to the browser.

Maybe your choice of default web browser got deselected to "none" somehow???
Don't know if Firefox has this, but you can do this in Safari, and select Firefox as your default browser in Safari's preferences under the "General" panel.
Don't know if that'll fix it or if that's even the problem, but it's something you might check...

  • Auto-select field after clicking link inside Appearance panel

Before Illustrator CC 2014, when I clicked on a link inside the appearance window, the corresponding field would auto select. This made for a more efficient workflow. But now for some reason this has disappeared and I miss it! Hey Illustrator team, can you guys add it back in the next release?
    How to reproduce:
Click on Opacity in the Appearance panel > "mini" opacity panel opens.
Opacity field should be selected so all the user has to do is click up or down arrows on their keyboard.
Just something small I noticed after I upgraded to CC 2014. Not a big deal honestly, but a small regression.

  • Going back in iBooks after clicking link in PDF ?

In a PDF (*not* eBook!), how can I go back to where I was if I click some link? Say, that I'm browsing the ToC and accidentaly click a link going to that page: how can I quickly go back to where I was? I've seen some mentions of "Back to page xxx" but it looks as if that's only for eBooks.
(Note: using iPad 1, iOS 5.0.1 and iBooks 2.0.1)

Yes, your solution works. I changed the "Access outside webs" option from
"Custom Setup" to "Allow Adobe Reader access outside webs". (something
likes that, not exact in wording.)
    But, another issue comes up:
    In the web page: http://bulk.resource.org/codes.gov/
when I right-click a PDF name in the left side of this web page and select
the option "Open web page in a new Tab", then one empty new Tab comes up,
but, the PDF file is downloaded into the Firefox "Download Window", the PDF
file is NOT opened in the new Tab.
I can open the downloaded PDF file from the "Download Window" using Adobe
Reader (not inside the Firefox Browser.)
At least, I could access and get PDF files now.
    Thanks for your help.

  • Disable middle click application switcher?

I am trying to use a kensington mouse in Maya on a Macbook pro. However, Middle Click launches the application switcher even when in Maya. Does anyone know how to a) fix this or b) disable application switcher?

Install Kensington MouseWorks™ software (version 3.0)
    <http://us.kensington.com/html/1385.html#mac30>
It will create a MouseWorks system preference where you can assign Middle-click to the middle button.

  • How do I script the Application Switcher?

I would like to write a script that brings up the application switcher, to allow its use without having to use the actual "command-tab" keyboard shortcut. This seems like a very simple thing, but I haven't been able to find any solution.
I initially thought that I might be able to access the application switcher directly through the Finder or System Events libraries, but that doesn't seem to be the case.
Then I turned to just having applescript execute the keyboard shortcut directly. While I can do a "keystroke tab using command down", what I want is to bring the app switcher menu up and leave it. Using a keyboard, I would hit control-tab, then continue to hold command (during which time I can do things like use the arrow keys). So I thought I would have my script simulate this behavior. Unfortunately I gather that modifier keys can only be modifiers for other keys, not held alone (with a "key down command" line). Is this correct?
Any other ideas? Ideally I want one script to bring up the app switcher (or do command-tab, with command left held) and another script to dismiss the switcher, choosing the app selected (or releasing the command key).

While the System Events script presented here, which you've tried, and a variation of which I've used in the past, might seem worthwhile, it is actually fraught with at least two potentially dangerous gotchas.
Problem one: Your Command key will be tied up for the duration of the script, as determined by the specified delay time, even if you dismiss the Application Switcher palette early by clicking off it. That means no use of your keyboard or mouse for the full 10 seconds (or however many seconds you specify) without the Command key acting as a modifier for whatever action you might want to take, in whatever application you're in. For example, clicking on a docked application icon during this 10-second delay will not switch to that application as you might expect, but will instead reveal its location in the Finder -- normal behavior when a docked icon is otherwise intentionally Command-clicked. Attempting to kill the script early by pressing ⌘. will only make things worse.
Problem two: Attempting to kill the script early by pressing ⌘. might not allow the script to reach the *key up* command, which is critical. If you don't allow the script to reach the *key up* command, your Mac will remain in a state where your Command key is virtually kept held down, rendering your keyboard useless, and producing the kind of mouse weirdness described above, +even after exiting the script.+ Logging out and back in to your account does cure this condition, however. Fortunately, should this unpleasant situation arise, you can avoid the need to log out by keeping a ready-made script +saved as an application+ available in your Script menu and running it if needed:
    *tell application "System Events"*
    *key up command*
    *end tell*
    Just my 2¢... Good luck.

  • How do I set Mail to launch clicked links in Safari, rather than Firefox?

I have both Safari and Firefox installed on my computer. Safari is the default browser, but when I click a link on an email that I have received, Mail opens it in Firefox. This happens even if I have Safari open and Firefox closed. In that case, Mail opens Firefox and then displays the location of the link. I can't find an option in Mail settings, to set the default browser for clicked links to Safari.

    Great news Matt, thanks.
Likely it was done when you installed Firefox, it asks if you want to make it the default browser.
