Disable automatic album / song ratings

I dunno if anyone else is like me and has a humongous music library, and therefore relies on star ratings to manage and enjoy it, but anyway - the iTunes album rating feature comes so close to being awesome, but instead lies frustratingly unused.
I would love to be able to make a new Smart Playlist of just my 4 and 5 star albums ("My Top Albums"), thus reviving the album amidst the single mp3 movement!
The problem is that iTunes applies an automatic album rating based on average song ratings, and I can't figure out how to disable it. What this means is that if I "top rate" a single song on a lousy album, that whole album will automatically be added to the "My Top Albums" playlist, which I obviously don't want.
It also clutters up the song rating field by putting these "recommended" blank stars. It's very disappointing and frustrating!
Is anyone else as ****** as I am? Has anyone found a way to disable this or get around it?

I found a script created by Doug Adams that allows you to set the album rating to half star, which will then remove it from the Smart Playlist, so that's certainly a step in the right direction.
http://dougscripts.com/itunes/scripts/scripts09.php?page=1#albumratingreset
In fact, it comes very close to being a complete workaround, except for the fact that it still clutters up the song ratings with a little "1/2". This could, of course, be a good thing, in that it quickly shows you which albums have been excluded from the "My Top Rated Albums" Smart Playlist. Now that I think about it, I kind of like that.
But now I have to manually go in and apply this script to all the things I DON'T want in My Top Rated Albums playlist. Then if Apple ever fixes this automatic rating issue, I'll have to go back in and run the script again to remove the half star junk. Hmm...
I wish Apple would give us the option to disable this feature!

I just installed an update on my iPhone and since then the choice to repeat music, or not, has disappeared and it automatically plays songs and albums on a loop. Anyone know how to make it play an album or song just once?

  • Importing song ratings without auto-sync or 3rd party software

My iPod Classic contains all my Mac iTunes' library (approx 150GB), and they auto-sync, so ratings, play counts etc are sync'ed seamlessly.
I manage my iPod nano and iPhone manually since their respective capacities are too small for my library.
How do I import song ratings etc back into iTunes without 3rd party software or creating playlists (dedicated to the nano and the phone) and auto-syncing just those playlists?
    Many thanks!

Hey! By mistake I found the solution to my exact question i.e. how to have ratings etc synced automatically without the use of playlists or 3rd parties. (Meg's answer actually convinced me to use dedicated playlists, but then, after toying with the devices and iTunes I stumbled on the solution to my original dilemma, which I've seen discussed in many places but not yet answered)
    So here it is:
when you connect the device (nano multi-touch or iphone 4, don't know about others) to iTunes, while having "Manually manage music" disabled (with "Enable disk use" enabled or disabled, it doesn't matter), go to Music tab, check "Sync Music", choose "Selected playlists, artists, albums, and genres" and that's it. You don't check any actual playlists, artists etc below, you can drag from iTunes and drop your chosen music to the device, play it, rate it, connect to iTunes and sync and you'll see the rating and play counts updated. Simple as that.
Thank you Meg, your answer is actually the best, I guess, since having the dedicated playlists tends to keep things more in order, but - thank you Apple! - you don't always need to be perfectly organized in order to have an up-to-date rating.

  • How do I disable detached Album Art window in iTunes 10?

    Hello,
In iTunes 9, whenever playing any music with album art, iTunes would not attempt to detach a separate window.
However, new in iTunes 10, every time I play a song that has album artwork, iTunes will automatically detach a small separate popup window that is supposed to show the album artwork for that song (I say "supposed', because the album artwork never shows up in this window; it's always just pitch black), as well as playback controls when you mouse over that detached window.
Also, whenever you try to close this album artwork popup window, song playback also stops! So one is forced to keep it open the entire time iTunes is playing music that happens to have album artwork.
I would like to remove this detached popup window and never have it show up, as it increases clutter with an extra window on my desktop, and most importantly, I did not instruct iTunes to open a separate window in the first place.
I searched iTunes preferences exhaustively and could not find an option to disable this album artwork popup window.
Is there a defaults write com.apple.iTunes command that can disable it? Or some other way to get iTunes to stop always automatically displaying this separate album artwork popup window? (And NO, I don't want to just minimize it).
    Thank you.

Do you mean iTunes 10 or 11?
I'm pretty sure this is controlled by the import settings for CDs.  Go to "preferences->general",
and click "Import settings" next to the CD line.  You can select MP3 or AAC there.

  • Song ratings not showing up

I rate songs on my ipod while I'm at work but when I plug it in to my laptop at home the ratings don't show up. Any way I can fix this?

I just don't want everything in my iTunes library on my iPod.
Okay, that's fine. There are a couple of options here as well!
If you turn off the tick-in-the-box that next to a song...
and Sync using Sync only ticked songs and videos as shown on the Device/Summary pane (when the iPod is connected to iTunes), then anything that is no longer ticked is not put on the iPod.
However, if managing that is too large a task, then perhaps some Playlists, or even better, Smart Playlists, may be the answer. You could then choose to only Sync selected Playlists to your iPod.
    For example:
Regular Playlists: - add songs and albums to Playlists and Sync only these to your iPod. You then have only part of your Library on your ipod. You change change which Playlists you Sync whenever you wish.
Smart Playlists: - I have several Smart Playlists, which are set to automatically remove songs from the Playlist once they have been played and only put them back into the playlist after several months. If you were to do this, and then Sync only selected Playlists, then each Sync of the iPod would update the Play count, remove the song from the Playlist (if that's what you want) and therefore from the iPod too, and then put songs back into the Playlist - and therefore onto your iPod as well, after say, six months.
In fact, I have the following:
Smart Playlist with 3, 4 and 5 star rated songs that I have not played for 7 months
Smart Playlist with 2 star rated songs that I haven't played for 13 months (note the different time scale)
Smart Playlist of songs that I have not played recently, and never rated, limited to 45 songs
Smart Playlist of songs that I have never played, limited to 75 songs
    ... and here's the really clever bit;
All those Playlists are in one Smart Playlist, named Ultimate. I frequently play only from the Ultimate playlist on my iPod. It gives me an "always different" mix of my favourite songs, not so favourite songs and new songs - without any effort on my part! I don't hear the same songs tooo often and I only have to Sync the iPod with iTunes every now and again.
If you like the idea of a Smart Playlist and need any help creating one or two to suit you, all you have to do is ask.

  • New iPod will not sync song ratings with iTunes

A few months ago I bought an iPhone (my first Apple MP3 player) and loaded it up with some music and everything worked fine between it and iTunes. I would rate some songs on the iPhone and synced it up with iTunes and it transferred those song ratings over with no problems.
I later got rid of the iPhone and bought an iPod 4GB Nano and loaded it up with music but when I rated some songs and synced it up with iTunes it would not transfer the ratings over. It would transfer over the ratings fine from iTunes to the iPod but not the other way around. I removed and reinstalled iTunes and deleted the iTunes folder within the My Music folder on my computer and reloaded iTunes and imported all my music again. Restored and reset my iPod and tried again, it still will not transfer over the song ratings from iPod to iTunes.
So I figured I got a screwed up iPod (it was a refurb) and decided to go ahead and upgrade. Bought a brand new iPod 8GB Nano and the same thing is happening again. Although it's not absolutely critical to be able to rate songs it helps in getting my music library sorted in deciding what to keep or not.
Any idea what to do short of reinstalling Vista or moving my music library over to another computer to sync with?

Hi, I just sorted out this problem for my ipod touch. Jose9550 and Chris in CA did not explain very well how it is to be sorted - their posts helped me but iI sort of discovered it by accident. My main problem was that the ipod did not update itunes with my track ratings made direct with the touch screen whilst listening to tracks.
Here is how I found out how to sort it:
Step 1: Click on the option in the summary screen to manually manage the music on you Ipod. Back up any tracks/playlists that you don't want to lose.
Step 2: Create a few playlists with music that you want on Ipod
Step 3: Click on your Ipod name in Itunes side bar and then select the Music tab on the main panel on the right. Now click on the check box "Sync Music". This will bring up a prompt that all your music /playlists currently on the Ipod may be erased. Accept this message and then click on check box "Selected playlists". Now pick the playlists/playfolders you want synced. Click apply.
Step 4: Go into the menu bar in itunes and select Edit>Preferences>Devices> and uncheck box beside "Disable Automatic syncing for IPhones and IPods"
Now any changes made to the playlists/tracks etc on the desktop or IPod will be transferred in both directions.

  • MyiPod automatically repeats songs when plugged into new Buick

My iPod touch automatically repeats songs when connected to 2014 Buick Enclave. I have to manually disable repeat function every time I switch to a new album or playlist. Any suggestions? Thanks

Have you done anything like updates to the car system or iPod since it last worked?
    You can try:
    - Resetting the car system
    - Unsync/delete all music and resync
To delete all music go to Settings>General>Usage>Storage>Music>Tap edit in upper right and then tap the minus sign by All Music
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup. See:
iOS: Back up and restore your iOS device with iCloud or iTunes
      - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.

  • Song Ratings Not Working on iPad 2/iOS 5.0.11

    Hello,
I have an iPad 2 with latest firmware iOS 5.0.1.
I use song ratings. An album with multiple songs, can have different ratings for each song.
When I tap an album and check the back of it with the song list, usually the song that I pick to play off the back of the album cover should display right above the correct song rating assigned to it. Unfortunately this does not seem to be working. Instead whatever rating is displayed at the top is almost static and doesn't change with the songs that are being played. Also if a song is playing and I change the rating from 3 stars to 1 star, the 1 star is now always displayed even as I play different songs that have different ratings that I haven't altered.
I have an iPhone 4S with latest firmware iOS 5.0.1 as well, and this problem does not exist on the iPhone, so it seems to be iPad specific.
Is anyone else having this problem? Would anyone have any possible solutions or pointers?
    Thanks.

I can see the acknowledgement that this issue will be fixed in the 'next' software update. Considering the original post was for an iPad 2 running 5.0.1, I am not sure if this issue on iOS 5.1 which runs on my new iPad (4G) is considered fixed. As I reported in my previous post it is impossible to update individual tracks. I also tried adding entire collection to a single playlist, shuffling the playlist. While shuffle is in progress, turning to the 'list' view that allows tracks to be rated does who the currently shuffled playlist and the currently playing track and assigns the rating to the track correctly. However, as soon as the second track plays, switching to list view (which displays the ratings) lists only the tracks from the currently playing track's album. Which is insane IMHO.
So, was this not fixed with 5.1 update? Or the iOS 5.1 will get it's own piece of update on this?

  • How do I stop itunes from automatically adding songs into my itunes library?

I want to disable itunes from automatically adding songs into my library.  Every time I sync up my ipod I'm finding miscellaneous debris on it that itunes keeps importing into it.  Theres got to be a way to disable this function but I can't seem to find it in the preferences.   I'm using a 2011 macbook pro with os x 10.6.7.

I figured out how to change itunes as my default player.  I did this by selecting a new audio file and hitting cmd and I to get info, then I selected the "open with" category.  Inside "open with" theres an option to open the file with quick time, underneath that is the "change all" option.  select that and you will solve this problem if this is a nuisance to anyone else.

  • Is it possible to transfer song ratings from an ipod to a computer's itunes

Is this possible? I rate my songs when I'm listening to them and tend to listen to songs through my ipod rather than through itunes and was wondering if I can transfer the ratings from my ipod to my computer. Perhaps I'm missing somthing, but its really rediculous that this isn't a clear function that you can carry out.

Welcome to Apple Discussions. If you configure
iTunes to update your iPod automatically, any rating
changes you make to songs on your iPod will be synced
to iTunes the next time you connect your iPod.
I'd just like to make sure of something before I enable automatic updating. I have made all of my song ratings on my ipod, not my ITunes library. I'm asked to confirm that I want to replace all existing songs/playlists on my ipod with the ITunes library. Won't that wipe out all the existing song ratings currently in the ipod?

  • Disable automatic update

How can I Turn off automatic updater and Macafee downloads? I am running it on XP with another antivirus.

Ok thanks. So this will no longer "touch" the songs in my iPod but it will still charge my iPod's battery, right?
My dad wanted to delete the songs I've downloaded that are already in my iPod, so I really need to disable automatic update.
Oh and one more thing: if I want to put new songs in my iPod, how do I do it now that automatic update is turned off?

  • Synchronization of song ratings doesn't work anymore (itunes 11.1)

    Dear support community
Yesterday I synchronized my iPhone 4 with my iMac. Usually that works fine - I use autosync for music and apps and so far all song ratings which I made on the iPhone were transfered to the Mac with no issues.
(e.g. I rate songs which I want to I delete off playlists with one star and then uncheck them later in tunes)
For some reaso,  after I updated itunes to 11.1 and my phone to iOS 7.0.2 that didn't work anymore.
I can still see the changed rating in the music app on the iPhone, but iTunes does not carry those over. I synchronized 7 times, restarted both phone and Mac, tried the wifi sync and syncronizing by cable - it does it without error - just the ratings are not copied anymore.
I am sure it worked before - especially also since all former ratings (which I also firstly did on the phone) are still there.
Does anyone have a good advice what might be the issue and can tell me a sollution?
    Thanks to everyone already!

I have the same problem: Sometimes it works, sometimes not!
    iTunes 11.4.0.8
    iOS 8.0
    My problem:
I use to manage my music library with itunes which i sync to my iphone (5s) and ipad (air). The devices are managed "manually", such that i just drag some albums to the device. When i rate some songs on my iphone and syncronize it later on to my itunes library, the ratings are sometimes not synced... the problem occurs also in the other direction (rating in itunes and syncing to iphone).
As i said, the problem occures only sometimes with some songs (seems completely random).
I had the same problem with my ipad (since 2013/11), but now since i updated to iOS8 and the latest itunes, the problem is the same with my iphone.
Any help from Apple? In my opinion this is a software bug!

  • Ipod songs ratings are not showing in Itunes (manually managed)

    Hello,
Ipod songs ratings are not showing in Itunes, however I can see the ratings in my iPod Touch 4 (that is manually managed). I have an iPod 3 an it works. Why?
I don't want to sync anything, I'm looking the songs that are in the iPod through iTunes and the rating information is missing.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks & Regards
    SU

    Hi SU
    Hope this helps.
When I connect my iPod touch to iTunes on my PC - under library there is a Music folder and under iPod there is a Music folder. Which music folder isn't showing the track rating?
If the Library Music folder isn't showing ratings then see A) Updating Ratings in Library Music
If the iPod Music folder isn't showing ratings then see B) Seeing Ratings in iPod Music
I have 20000 tracks in iTunes and 5000 tracks on my iPod which I am rating as a listen to them. 1000 have ratings 4000 have none.
    A) Updating Ratings in Library Music
This is on a PC. When you manually manage music on your iPod the ratings you assign on your iPod aren't automatically synced to iTunes but it is easy to do it manually and only takes a few minutes.
    1) in iTunes on a PC click Music under iPOD, sort your tracks by the Rating column and select 5 star tracks.
    2) Click File > New Playlist From Selection and call it 5 STAR. This creates a new playlist on your iPod.
    3) Right click the 5 STAR playlist and click Export. I save the playlist export file to my Desktop.
    4) Click File > Library > Import Playlist > navigate to the location you exported the playlist to (in my case Desktop), select 5 STAR and import. You may get a warning saying some tracks don't exist, you get this if you change track info in your iTunes library, it'll omit these tracks from the playlist your creating. 5 STAR playlist will appear under iTunes Playlists.
    5) Select 5 STAR under iTunes Playlists and you will see your 5 star tracks from your iPod but the Rating will be blank. Select all tracks, right click, select Rating and then *****. All the tracks will now be rated 5 star.
    6) Right click iTunes Playlist 5 STAR and select Delete, this won't delete your tracks.
    7) Right click iPOD Playlist 5 STAR and select Delete, this won't delete your tracks.
    8) You can repeat this process with your 4 star stracks then 3 star, etc.
    9) an optional step. Once I've rated my tracks I delete them from my iPod.
I do this process every few weeks when I've got a reasonable batch of tracks to update ratings in iTunes.
    B) Seeing Ratings in iPod Music
In iTunes iPod Music my tracks are sorted by rating and I mistakenly thought the rating column is blank. I clicked on the Name column to resort and saw some of the tracks had ratings. I then noticed that when I clicked on iPod music it didn't display tracks from the top of the list (my 5 star tracks) which I expected but half way down (0 star tracks) which is why I thought there was a problem. So now when I look at my iPod music in iTunes I scroll up the list to check they are showing ratings before doing A) above.

That's how it is supposed to work, just delete any songs, albums or artists you no longer want on your phone.
