Disable Automatic Disc Drive Startup

Hello,
I have recently been watching a lot of TV DVDs on my MacBook Pro. However, when not watching, I find it very annoying (not to mention wasteful to the drive) that the disc drive automatically tries to boot up everytime I open my computer.
Is there anyway to leave a disc in the drive and only have it turn on when I ask it to in the DVD player?
Thanks!

fizzbin1701,
if there’s a disc in the Superdrive, then it will always “rev” when you open your computer. The System Preferences change only prevents the disc from being played automatically.

  • How do I disable my disc drive?

I have an older Macbook pro with OS X on it. My dvd or disc drive refuses to accept discs anymore. I'll put in a dvd and it will make very loud noises and then spit it out. It's done it for years but its gotten so bad it won't accept the disc at all. I have an external drive, but it won't work because my computer has one. Is there anyway to disable the internal one in my computer?

Often the problem lies with a dirty lens.  Use a lens cleaning DVD, a shot of compressed air or a fine microfiber clothe wrapped around a business card slid gently inside.

The iTunes application should be installed on the system drive. You may need to repair iTunes to fix that error regarding a missing .exe.

  • How do i disable automatic launch of open programs on startup

how do i disable automatic launch of open programs on startup

    It's the Resume feature.
When choosing Restart, Sleep or Shutdown there is a checkbox you can uncheck to prevent the apps from launching.
Also in System Preferences > General there is a hard-to-find checkbox under "Number of recent items" you can turn off.
Also, you can hold the shift key to disable resume on a one time basis.
You can turn off Resume globally by going to ~/Library/Saved Application State and deleting that folder.
(note that the User Library is hidden - one way to get there is to go to your Finder "Go" menu hold the option key to choose "Library")
To turn off autosave and versions globally
If you're experiencing slow opening apps or windows since upgrading to ML... as I have... and you don't want your OS to automatically save your TextEdit files, etc. then simply disable Autosave and Versions via Terminal.
If you don't want autosave or resume you can copy & paste this command into Terminal at the prompt...
defaults write -g ApplePersistence -bool no
    Press return
    Now reboot.
    The reverse would be "yes".

  • Macbook won't let me disable automatic login.

I have always had my macbook set to automatically login. Recently, though, I moved and have new roommates. I would like my macbook to require a password before logging in when it is started. I have tried disabling automatic login two different ways:
*System Preferences > Users & Groups > Login Options > Automatic login: Off*
    and
*System Preferences > Security & Privacy > General > Disable automatic login*
In both cases I click the little lock in the lower left-hand corner and type in my password before changing the setting. After changing the setting, I click the little lock again so it returns to the locked position. However, every time I shut down or restart, my computer automatically logs in and when I look at the system preferences, they are once again set to *Automatic login: [my account name]* and *Disable automatic login* is unchecked.
What can I do to get the settings to remain changed? I am not super tech-savvy, so any suggestions will be appreciated.

What model year it the Mac you have? If it is a Late 2011 or newer model then you can first reinstall the Original version of OS X that came on it by using the Online Internet Recovery system. Hold down the Command+Option/Alt+r key at startup and hold them down until you see a Spinning Globe in the center of the screen. From the screen that comes up use Disk Utility to Repartition the drive as one partition aand when that is done close DU and Select Reinstall Mac OS X.
If it is older then a late 2011 model then you will need the Original System disks for that Mac. These can be order from Apple for a small charge.

  • X205 9800 disc drive won't read discs, have external CD/DVD ROM.

I have an X205 9800.  I upgraded to Windows 7.  After a few weeks the disc drive stopped working.  It will not read any of my discs/cds/dvd/etc.
I ordered an external Toshiba USB disc drive.  It works great!  No issues, but I want to use my recovery media I ordered from Toshiba.com.  It will read, initially, from the external USB disc drive.  But once I initialize the recovery media it tries to use the internal disc drive, not the USB one.
I restarted the laptop.  Hit F12.  Changed it from my internal to my external.  Saved changes.  Still nothing.
I even tried disabling the internal one as well.  Still same problem.  The laptop wants to read the media from the internal disc drive and it will not read any disc I have.
How do I get my laptop to do a full recovery from my USB disc drive instead of my internal one on my laptop?
    Or...
Is there a fix to get my internal disc drive to read my cds/dvds?
Any help would be deeply appreciated.

    Hello,
Is the internal DVD drive recognized by the laptop? Can you see it on computer?
If yes- Try going to the device manager, uninstall the DVD driver then restart the laptop. The DVD driver should be installed automatically after restarting the laptop.
If no - Do the upper and lower filter troubleshooting.
Click on start, type REGEDIT on RUN or if you are using vista/windows 7, tyoe it on the search programs and files..
It will go directly to registry editor.
Look for HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE click on + sign or the arrow then look for SYSTEM click on + sign or the arrow then look for CurrentControlSet click on + sign or the arrow then look for Control click on + sign or the arrow then look for Class click on + sign or the arrow then look for {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} click on + sign or the arrow then look on the right part of the window, look for LowerFilter and upper filter. Delete them or even if you can only find one of them, just delete it then restart the laptop.
    Hope this help.

  • ? MacBook won't recognize external disc drive

My MacBook's internal disc drive quit, so I'm trying an external Samsung SE-208 slim portable DVD writer.   It worked once, but now the mac won't recognize it.  I tried a DVD switcher app - no luck.  The Samsung plugs into the USB port, starts up OK then disappears from itunes, the desktop, Finder - It's gone. Can I completely disable the internal disc drive?  Would that help?  I appreciate ANY help.   I'm not skilled at these things so you need to spoon feed me.  thanks

  • SCE 2010 Subscriptions getting disabled automatically

    Hi Experts,
we are using SCE 2010 server from last 4 years. Of late i have been noticing that the subscriptions are getting disabled automatically. i manually enabled it after which it sends alerts but after couple of minutes the subscriptions get disabled again.
The database and hard drive spacing is fine. Let me know what could be the possible issue as in the event log i haven't noticed any alerts with regards to this issue.

    Hi,
When a subscription is created the user who created the subscriptions SID is associated with that subscription. There is a workflow that checks every half hour for SIDs no longer valid. They could be invalid because their accounts access that had been removed,
or possibly because the account has been disabled or deleted. I suggest you re-create the subscription with the current Admin.

  • IMac disc drive "sorta" reading discs

If anyone has any suggestions for this problem I'd certainly appreciate any help. Recently I've noticed that my G5 iMac's disc drive is only "sorta" reading discs. It says that some discs are "unreadable" and spits them out again, but others appear as blank DVDs. This makes me wonder about whether this is a software, firmware, or hardware problem. I can't seem to find a solution in the forum. Any ideas? I'd like to try the Apple Hardware Test, but I can't startup from a DVD! If this helps brainstorm some ideas, I've also got an Intel MacBook to work with...
    Thanks!
    Tony

The inability to start up from a DVD is not a good sign since it should be independent of the OS installed on your internal drive. To eliminate any effects that OS might have on the iMac itself, try resetting PRAM (hold down command-option-P-R on restart until you hear a second startup chime).
Hopefully, this will let you startup from a suitable DVD. Just make sure it is the original iMac installer DVD if you are trying to run AHT, or that DVD or a retail Leopard one if you just want to boot into the normal installer to access its version of Disk Utility or something.
If none of this works, & the DVD(s) appear to be clean & undamaged, it may be time to consider a trip to a repair service.

    Hello experts,
please, how is it possible to disable automatic start of SAP NetWeaver ABAP in Windows XP after windows startup?
    Thank you,
    Ondrej

Right-click on "My Computer", and choose Manage.  Open the "Services and Applications" node on the tree structure on the left, double-click on "Services".  Find the service called  MAXDB:NSP  Right-click on this and change the startup type to "Manual".  Click "Apply", then "Ok".  Then go to the service labeled as SAPNSP_00 and do the same thing, setting it to manual.  That should be it.  These services will then be starting only when starting the system via the MMC

  • RE-Install Tiger with no disc drive.

    Here's my problem:
Old MacBook 1.83 GHz with a disc drive that seems dysfunctional. It actually did not read any CDs or DVDs, and was recently replaced by a third party warranty company. When I received the computer after the warranty work, it read CDs again and allowed me to boot from the MacBook restore disc. I erased my hard drive in anticipation of reinstalling Tiger. During the verification of the install disc, it spit an error message at me saying the disc was dirty or smudged, suggested that I remove it and clean it, and then try again. I did this, and received the same message. The disc looks sparkly clean with no scratches or fingerprints. I then chose to ignore the warning and install anyway. Install eventually failed and asked that I restart the process.
The warranty repair noted that there was a mounting bracket that was broken and it was not covered. THe note explained that the tech was going to try and complete a makeshift repair that allowed the drive to work. I suspect that there is something wrong SOMEWHERE (who knows where) related to the optical drive that is preventing me from successfully reading the disc and installing the software. On another note, the drive will NOT start up from a retail Tiger DVD either. (For reference, I was initially using the 2 discs that shipped with the MacBook for the reinstall.) I called a friend, who is quite knowledgeable on this and recommended I turn the Macbook into a firewire drive (T key at startup) and use a different Mac to read the disc and install the software directly to the now empty MacBook. That did not work either. Once I got to the install screen and allowed to select a volume to install Tiger to, it would not allow me to use the MacBook saying it could not install because it was unable to startup using Mac OS X.
So I'm stuck with a white MacBook brick, unless I can find a way to read the disc properly, or install from some external source. Are there any ways anyone knows I could get OS X onto the MacBook?? Thanks.
I'm usually really good with this kind of stuff, but I'm stumped and excruciatingly frustrated.

I have a very similar problem: white 2006 MacBook with a bad optical drive, had to replace internal hard drive, cannot figure out how to use machine-specific system restore discs to install the OS on the internal. I've been puzzling over this, and here's what I think I've discovered:
    Problems being:
    * Can't use retail Tiger disc, because it will not install on an Intel MacBook. (From what I've read, there are no standalone retail Tiger discs for Intel machines.)
    * Installing via FireWire target mode from on other machines wouldn't work, because other models won't boot from these machine-specific Software Restore discs.
    * Can't put disk images of the install discs on an external drive and install from there (at least I don't think that will work).
Potential solutions left, as far as I can tell:
    * Create bootable partition on external hard drive. Using Disk Utility on another machine, "Restore" the installation disks to this external HD partition. Boot MacBook from this ext. HD partition, and then install from those images onto internal HD.
    * Buy Leopard retail disc, boot other machine with it, and using FW target mode, install on the MacBook internal HD.
    * Get an external optical drive or replacement internal drive.
In my situation, all three remaining solutions involve a purchase, which I'd like to avoid (good money after bad). But if any of them work for you, good luck!

On the security settings 'General' tab, only the checkbox for 'Require password (immediately, etc.) is enabled. All options under it are ghosted an inaccessible including 'Disable automatic login'. How do I make these options available? I need my Macbook to require a login on startup.

  • How to disable automatic login and to see other accounts?

I bought MacBook Pro Retina with Mac OS X 10.8.2 in a shop, where there already was account "kiosk".
I created new account, gave him Administrator priviliges.
In the Preferences / Users & Groups I see kiosk account as "Managed", and my new account as "Admin".
    I set:
System Preferences / Security & Privacy / General / Disable automatic login = Checked.
System Preferences / Users & Groups / Login Options / Automatic login = Off.
But still I have two issues:
    1) After start the laptop automatically logins into kiosk account, while I explicitly switched off this option
    2) Apart from kiosk account, the OS doesn't see any other accounts, for example my new account.
For example, when I changed login shell for kiosk account into /usr/bin/false, I couldn't login at all. The OS said something like, there are no active accounts. So I had to set login shell back to /bin/bash using single-user mode.
    The questions are:
How to disable automatic login into kiosk account?
How to see a choice between kiosk account and my new account in the login dialog?
How to delete kiosk account? Currently the delete option is disabled for kiosk in System Preferences / Users & Groups.
So far after laptop start I automatically login into kiosk, then switch into my new account with entering a password, which is weird.
    Thanks in advance.
