Disable backups while front row active

Time Machine is nice but its really annoying that it runs every hour... even when something like FrontRow is active. It runs, so the backup disk spins up, so (for reasons I don't quite follow) FrontRow pauses for a couple seconds.
Is there a way to tell TM not to run when FR is active?

yes, it's possible but it would require modifying a system launch daemon responsible for TM by hand. I would recommend against it unless you are comfortable with this sort of things. You may want to turn off TM before starting Front Row or increase the time interval between TM backups with [TimeMachineEditor|http://timesoftware.free.fr/timemachineeditor>. This will decrease the chances of TM kicking in at the wrong time.

  • Graphics card blinks out while Front Row is in use

I have a Dual Core Mac Mini and works fine while I'm on my desktop working, iTunes and other programs but when I use Front Row to watch Podcasts, Movies etc. it blinks out on me and seems to like go to sleep on me and when I press a button on the remote it wakes up and for a few seconds keeps a live image and then blinks out again.
Any help or known issues? thank you! - JRider

I've been having the same issue but maybe slightly different. I have a Mac Mini and an InFocus X1A projector. When Im working on the Mac everything is beautiful, but when I go into Front Row, beyond the first menu, the image blinks and the projector seems to have trouble holding the resolution signal; frequently goes blank and reports the resolution of the Mini and after 2-3 seconds go back to the image. Any thoughts? I upgraded to the latest, 10.5.1 and I wonder if there's an issue there with that.
    Thanks very much

  • Disable or alter Front Row Short Cuts

    Hello,
I use a couple of programs that lead conflicts with Front Row's short cut routines. Is there a way to edit Front Row's short cut's or if not, disable them completely? I am prepared to un-install Front Row if it comes to it but I'd prefer to leave it.
    Any suggestions are welcome.
    Thanks

Are you talking about the command + esc shorcut? If yes, have a look at Disable "Front Row" keyboard shortcut. If no, then I don't understand how programs shortcuts can interfere with Front Row.

  • Front Row View While Playing

While Front Row is playing music or other mp3 it shows the progress bar and the "album jacket" associated with the file. Every minute or so, the album jacket switches from one side of the screen to the other automatically.
Is there a way to stop the alternating from side to side?
    Thanks.

I think this feature may be for people who use an lcd or plasma type display for their main monitor. I have a Mac Mini in the living room that feed's my plasma and the flip flop feature seems to be designed to prevent burn-in (latent images of bright objects), It doesn't do a great job but that appear to be it's function. Apple probably thinks you wouldn't want to turn it off.

  • Front Row with Extended Desktop

Im interested in purchasing a new Macbook and using it along side my plasma. Is it possible to run Front Row from the macbook using its screen for the interface and displaying the content on the plasma via the extended desktop?

Currently Front Row only displays its menus and video content on the primary display. Any other displays are blacked out while Front Row is activated.

  • Using Front Row On Duel Screen

    Hi guys,
I've got a macbook at the moment and was wondering, if i were to hook it up to another screen and run it duel screen is it possible to use front row in the second screen as appose to just the main laptop screen? And then also use the remote and everything to control front row, but at the same time be using my macbook normally for other tasks? So basically....i use my macbook normally, but at the same time, someone else can be using the remote to control Front Row thats showing on a different screen. Thanks in advance,
    Luke

I assume when you are not using FrontRow, you can see your Mac desktop on both your laptop and the TV, correct? (Just making sure the connection is working.)
If so, in the Displays preference pane, there should be an Arrangement tab. This is where you tell your Mac how your have your displays arranged. There should be a check box that says Mirror Displays (or something like that). That tells the computer to show the same image on both displays.
Front Row can only be on one display. I assume it will always be on whichever display the computer has designated as the "primary" display. And it will blank any other displays while Front Row is active. If that is what is happening in your case, mirroring the displays should put Front Row on both.
BTW: The Mac's Help system can be, well, helpful here. From the Finder's Help Menu select Mac Help. Do a search for "mirror video" and you'll get instructions on how to do it.

  • Macbook and TV - Front row controls.

I'm connecting my Macbook to TV through MiniDVI - S-video and i am working with front row with it and it works fine.
My question is... Is there a way that i can turn on Front Row on screen of my TV while having normal desktop screen on my MacBook? I thought i could turn this on by turning off "mirror screen" but it still shows Front Row on both screens?

No, Front Row takes over. One screen will be dark while Front Row is running in the other screen.

  • Front Row crashes when loading DVD

Hey, I hope someone can help with this, I am trying to use front row to play a DVD, but after a short while front row closes. Now, as soon as i tell it to play the DVD, when it tries to load it, it just turns off. There is no unexpected closure error message or option to report or anything, it just acts like I closed it. And help or info is appreciated, thanks.

I've actually been having the same problem.
First of all, my DVD player constantly takes forever to load a DVD and/or spits it out; then more recently, Front Row without fail will crash when a DVD ends. Even worse, lately, it won't even play the DVD after repeated attempts to start it.
It's extremely annoying and I can't figure out what to do.

  • Putting Front Row on an Ibook late 2004 after archiving & installing 10.5

front row will not appear in dock after upgrading. Cannot put front row into dock because it is not possible to select dock while front row is running after upgrading to leopard 10.5.1
click on download link at the following site:
    http://lucidsystems.org/luciddocktools.html
install the program. Then go to the utilities folder and start terminal. In the terminal window paste the following and press enter:
    additemtodock /Applications/Front\ Row.app
front row will appear in dock. you can then run front row-minus the remote control which ibooks don't have.

You don't need to wait for an application to run to keep it in the Dock, Front Row included. And you don't need to add a utility or to use Terminal to do this.
Instead, just navigate in the Finder to the Applications folder (or wherever it is stored) & drag it from the Finder window to the Dock.

  • Multi tasking with Front Row

Is there any way to use the Mac for other tasks while Front Row is running?
Ideally I'd run Spaces on the Mac and limit Front Row to a single Space and then be able to switch to another Space to use the mac for something else. This is not a CPU speed issue since iTunes can happily play music while the Mac is used for other stuff. It's a design decision by Apple the FR ignores Spaces and grabs the whole machine, unless anyone knows better.
Yes I could use iTunes instead, but I want the remote controlability of Front Row, yet be able to simply use the Mac while FR continues to play, then I can switch back to the FR display when finished.
Any suggestions as to how to make Front Row 'share' the Mac?

This is unfortunately not possible as Front Row is an immersive application.
I'm afraid I have no alternative solution to provide.

  • Exiting Front Row

What is the quickest way to exit Front Row? So far I've found I have to hit "escape" for every sub menu I've gone into, is there a faster way?

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
The safest way would be to "esc" out of each window. However, you should be able to use the command-option-esc key command to exit immediately. (This is a force-quit command.) Mac OS X is based on Unix, so force-quitting an application shouldn't affect any other programs. But, I'd recommend using the "esc" key or the "menu" key on the Apple remote to exit.
EDIT: Hmm... I've never tried to "tab" out of Front Row. While Front Row did quit after hitting "tab", the mouse pointer was not visible in Safari (my previously front-most application). I had to hide Safari before the cursor/pointer reappeared.

  • Screen Saver starts while playing DVD in Front Row (Tiger)

Just recently, Screen Saver starts while playing a DVD in Front Row. This never used to happen and I suspect it's due to some software update. I know that Leopard users now have Settings within Front Row to disable the Screen Saver...but why is this just now happening in Tiger? Playing a DVD in Front Row used to override whatever Screen Saver settings there were.
Part of the convenience of using Front Row is now lost for me. I don't want to have to adjust my Energy Saver settings each and every time I want to use Front Row to play a DVD. And I'm not ready to upgrade to Leopard yet.
Any solutions? Any way Tiger users can adjust settings in Front Row?

Not sure if this works on Tiger, but this may be the solution you are looking for

  • White screen when activating front row?

Hi all, I'm wondering if anyone has experienced this problem. I have my mac mini going dvi/hdmi into my receiver(onkyo 605) then HDMI into my tv (LG 720P). Front row works fine when I first start up, but if the computer goes to sleep, after I wake it front row goes to a white screen if I call it up.
Has anyone seen this? I think it has something to do with my receiver. It has an upscaling feature, but I'm not sure if that's the problem, or if it's the fact that the EDID gets lost when it sleeps. The screen loses the signal if the mac mini goes to sleep, but I can get it back on by switching some things on and off with out restarting the computer. I've tried taking the mini straight into the tv, bypassing the receiver, and it doesn't have the same problem, as far as I could tell in my brief test.
Any insight would be really appreciated
    thanks
    Ted

i have had the same issue once in a long while. dont know the cause though. i just restart when it happens.

  • Can screensaver not start when front row is active?

    Hi,
I would like to know if there is a way to set the screensaver not to start, but only when Front Row is active. I want it to start all the other times.
    Thanks,
    Brandon
