Disable command-tab and/or kill dock

Hello,
Is there a clever terminal command or a simple hack that will disable command-tab switching between apps? If not, can I kill the dock completely to regain the ability to use command-tab in QuarkXPress?
This keyboard shortcut conflict is driving me nuts trying to stay productive in Quark. The PullTab haxie is not Leo-friendly yet, so I need a solution ASAP.
Thanks!!!

There is no way to disable command-Tab that I am aware of. Can you assign a new key combo to quark's command-tab feature?

  • Disabling command-tab capture in ARD 3.3

With ARD 3.3, Command-Tab is now "captured" by the remote machine when controlling a screen.
I absolutely see the benefit of this in many situations, but the way I use ARD it drives me batty most of the time. Ideally I'd want it off (as in ARD 2.2) 75% of the time, and on (as in ARD 3.3) 25% of the time.
Is there any way to disable this new feature, or even better to toggle between it being active and not active?
    Thanks!

I used to like how cmd+tab worked only when remote controlling in full screen, and since installing the latest update, I've noticed that cmd+tab behavior has been inconsistent and flaky. Disabling the sending of system keys seems to have fixed it. Whew!

  • Switching application shortcut problem (COMMAND+TAB) and (COMMAND+`)

    Hello everyone
Since the upgrade Leopard i had a problem with the switching apps shortcut.
Once you start the switching apps forward shortcut (COMMAND + TAB), the switching apps Backward shortcut (COMMAND + `) won't work anymore. The only thing that make it works it to use (COMMAND + SHIFT + TAB) which is not good. It gives me cramp in my left hand! HA!
Anyways I check out petty much everywhere in the settings where I could find a customize shortcut for that. But I didn't find it. I also check if is was not an other application who was taking the same shortcut and it is not the case.
Can somebody help me on that one.
I know it is not a big deal but... still.
    Thanks everyone
    Benoit

Some applications allow you to set hotkeys (Quicksilver, a 3rd party app, is the example I used -- this is not included with OSX). I was thinking that perhaps some other application you have was using the hotkey cmd-tab and stealing it from the finder.
You can also change the 'meta' keys in the system 'Keyboard and Mouse' prefereneces (click on keyboard -> modifier keys) -- this maybe is confusing things if its not set to defaults.
There's also a 'keyboard shortcuts' tab under keyboard and mouse, look under there e and see if there's anything involving tab (by default there shouldn't be).

  • Command - Tab shortcut not working

My command - tab shortcut stops working after a random period of time and I have to restart my MacBook to get it working again. Any idea what could be causing this keyboard shortcut to fail? I tried killing and re-running the Dock but that does not fix it. A refuse to reboot my Mac everytime it happens (this is not Windows...) Any ideas on what might be causing the problem?

Actually I just researched this further and found a solution here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1830738&tstart=0
+Open the activity monitor and look for something like the "ScreenSaverEngine" - the process should be marked as "not responding" (written in red)+
+End this process and Command+Tab and other shortcuts will work again!+

  • Command Tab cycles through open apps but does NOT load the window ??

So I've got several apps running....Mail, Safari, iTunes. I hit command tab and tab over to the program I want and then RELEASE.....The program is displayed at the top of the toolbar but where is my window ??? Its still sitting at the bottom of the tool bar waiting for me to search for it. What gives ? Why isn't command tab doing loading the window ?

Plenty of people, myself included, don't bother to minimize windows. We just keep everything open.
Perhaps this article will help you?

  • Command-tab issue

I'm not sure if it's a feature, but sometimes I press Command+Tab and only the icons for apps in that space show. If I let go and try it again, I get the whole list of apps open system-wide.
I've done some searching but can't find any answers. I sthis a feature?

guitar4542 - My question wasn't how to get the app switcher up, thanks.
Carolyn - I can't see anything in there for switching with command-tab at all. The basic feature I know, but this whole switching between apps that are only in that space is something that seems to be new, since Leopard has Spaces and previous releases of OS X didn't.

  • I have what looks like a second dock and a second command-tab window?

In my house we've got two macs using the wi-fi, a Mac Pro late 2013 running Yosemite and a Mac Mini also running Yosemite. What's strange is sometimes I get what looks like a second dock with only one icon, Chrome (my default browser). The Chrome icon has a little circle with a monitor above it. When I command-tab, that same icon is in a second command-tab box, and it's there even when Chrome is closed. I can't figure out how to make these things go away. Here are pictures to show what I'm talking about:
    and the tab-box:
    Thanks!

    Are you using continuity/hand-off?
I am not using it myself but I have seen son presentations where the "second" dock represents an application running on your iPhone where your current task can resumed by using that feature

  • Dock and command tab function

my dock mysteriously has disappeared and will not show up on the bottom of my screen. my command tab function to move between applications does not work either. i just installed the latest update for mac os but it hasn't fixed the problem. any advice?

Start by running the two basic checks provided by Disk Utility's "First Aid" tab to make sure the file system & system permissions are OK. (You can ignore SUID warnings in the permissions check.)
If that doesn't turn up anything, try creating a new user account for testing purposes. If the problem goes away in the new account on its first login, it implies some user preference file is corrupted or an incompatible or corrupted login item is present in your normal account.
If that turns up nothing, try Mac OS X: starting up in Safe Mode, then log into your normal account. If the problem disappears it implies something mentioned here is or was the culprit. (Some problems are fixed by a safe boot, others require more work.)
If any of these steps reveals a problem, don't go to the next one until it is resolved. If you need more help determining what to do about any revealed problem, please post a description of it & list any steps you have already taken that had no effect. If you can resolve the problem, please post a description of what you did as well. (Others will benefit from your experience, good or bad.)

  • Dock is missing and unable to command+tab thru programs

Hey there, i'm running a powerPC G5 - and one day my dock just disappeared. Not only that but i found that i am now no longer able to "command+tab" thru the active programs.
Is there a problem w/ my finder?
    My current system is 10.4.11
    Thanks

Try creating an new admin user account in System Preferences Accounts pane. Log out and log in to the new account. Does the problem also recur under that different account?
If not, there is something wrong in your usual user account.
If it does recur, problem is in your overall system.

  • Open applications not appearing in dock or command-tab.

I am using 10.9.5 on a Macbook Air and I've noticed recently that open applications don't display icons in the dock.  Command-Tab also doesn't show the icons of all open applications either.  This seems to be recently occurring.  It's quite frustrating switching between applications when command-tab doesn't show the open application icons nor are the icons of open apps displayed in the dock.  Any ideas are appreciated.
    Thank You

Open the Terminal in the Utilities folder. At the prompt paste the following:
         killall Dock
Press RETURN. See if that helps.

  • Dock not working; command-tab switch between programs not working

The Dock does not work. I have restarted (although the computer will not restart under "Restart", getting stuck at the last part, and needs to be restarted manually). When I change Dock preferences it reverts back to default settings. If I am lucky, the dock will appear and then disappear (poof) without having functioned.
The command tab function for switching between programs stopped working also.
The individual programs work, but I have to go to recent items to switch programs.
Further, I have two Previews open (with different documents in each) even though I have only one Preview program.
A whole lot of bizarre things that may be connected? I would appreciate any help.

You could try removing the .plist file again, but this time, try also removing the com.apple.dock.db file. Then log out and log in again.
Also, it seems as if many people are having similar problems. See [this thread|http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=9126119].
So, does the problem persist with another user account?
If it were my machine, the next thing I'd try is downloading the combo updater from Apple's website and reinstalling it. 10.5.6 is available [here|http://support.apple.com/downloads/MacOS_X_10-5-6_ComboUpdate].

  • Command Tab not pulling up open windows from Dock

Sorry if this is covered elsewhere, though I have looked:
Using Command-Tab to invoke Application Switch is very helpful. However I have an issue with iCal and with AddressBook sometimes. If they have an open window, minimised to the dock, it does not jump up on switching. Other apps do; just switching with command-tab to that app pulls up the most recent window. With iCal/AddressBook, it switches to the app; but the window remains in the dock and needs a click before it jumps up. Which kind of negates the app-switch in the first place, if you need to follow through with a mouse-click as well.

    Thanks for your help.
    PowerMac G4 2x1G MDD; PB G4 1G   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

    Alastair,
I believe that behavior can be attributed to any application with one minimized window. I get around that limitation by using the Hide feature. For example, just use the Address Book>Hide Address Book (⌘+H) command instead of Minimize (⌘+M). Using Apple + Tab will then open the Address Book application window as you would expect.
You can use the Keyboard to access a minimized window, but it is not convenient. (Control + F3) will give you access to the Dock. Then use the arrow keys to navigate to the Dock icon of your choice and hit enter. That action will open the application or window of your choice. Esc will cancel the keyboard action.

  • Disable the "select by mouse" feature when Command-Tabbing

    Hello,
Is there a way to keep the mouse cursor from derailing your intentions when hitting the command-tab combo to switch between applications?  When the mouse happens to be near the middle of the screen, my command-tab ends up going to some random app because it happened to be on the list where the mouse cursor was at that moment.  I drives me crazy when I'm in a hurry.
Is there a way to disable that functionality?
Getting into the habit of moving my mouse out of the way first is a very distant second (and just a work around) to the preferred solution.
    Thanks!
    -Travis

Also try deleting the mouse .plist in your user library.
You need to look in your user Library/Preferences for the .plist. Hold down the option key while using the Finder "Go To Folder" command. Enter ~/Library/Preferences. Delete the .plist(s) for the mouse (there might be more than one).
If you prefer to make your user library permanently visible, use the Terminal command found below.
    http://osxdaily.com/2011/07/04/show-library-directory-in-mac-os-x-lion/
You might want to bookmark the command. I had to use it again after I installed 10.8.2. I have also been informed that if you drag the user library to Finder it will remain visible.
Log out/in or restart and test.

  • HT2474 how to operate the dock - when i pull up the dock Command Tab, the dock appears centre screen but  can select an item to open

    Hi
I am trying to use the dock like i have seen on other screens, by pressing command and tab - i can pull up the dock so it appears and cycles through, but when i try and select an item it just disappears, i am holding hte command button when selecting it or it just disappears. any helps appreciated.
    thanks

That's not the Dock.. the Dock is the thing at the bottom of the screen that shows apps and a trash can.
Regarding command-tab, the window that brings up should show all running apps. As long as you hold down command, it will stay open. Selecting an item in that window should cause that app to come to the front. However, if the app in question does not have any open windows, there may not be much change on the screen, so you could miss it. Keep an eye on the menu next to the Apple menu, which has the name of the current app. Does that menu change to whatever app you selected using command-tab?
