Disable/configure spell checking??

Hi,
a short question about system-wide spell-checking in Mac OS X... can it be disabled?? i don't really understand how it came to it, but now several applications (e.g. Adium, Safari) keep underlining all words in red... not that i'm particularly bad at spelling, only they're all assuming i'm typing in german!! the only reason i can think of which may explain that is that i actually live in germany, and i've set it up somewhere in my system. but since i'm often typing in other languages as well, it's not really helpful... i've checked the preferences in adium, safari, as well as the system preferences, and i haven't been able to find how to change that...
anyone has an idea? it's getting kind of annoying... :-\
thx a lot!
Pagod

Caitlin,
Thanks for your answer! Since then, I figured out that I could change those settings in about:config by selecting them and pressing enter.
By the way I installed the nightly Fennec build, and it seems more responsive than the Firefox-named release version. It doesn't support the Adblock plugin, so that may be reason enough to switch back to the 1.0 version.

  • 2010 Publishing Site - Disable automatic spell check

We have a 2010 publishing site.. and evertime you publsih a page it does an automatic spell check. Can this be disabled?
I found how to disable spell check on lists but I need to stop the auto check on page publish.
    Thanks!

    I also experienced this issue.
So i tried uncommenting the registerSpellingHandler() line in the Spellcheck.js files like suggested by sayitfast. This worked for me in my dev environment. But i didn't like messing around with the default SharePoint files under the 15 hive in the prod
    environment.
So i searched a bit more and found a decent solution for this. You can disable the spell check for certain fields by setting the "excludeContentFromSpellCheck" attribute to "true" on text area and input controls that you dont want to be spell checked. I
did this on all my page layouts. Now i dont get false positives anymore.
The solution i found was this one: http://blog.cube4.com.au/?p=1016
This worked for SharePoint 2013. I dont know if this would work for SharePoint 2010 also.

  • How can I disable automatic spell checking for specific websites?

I'd like to disable automatic spell-checking for specific domains, such as programming-oriented forums. Is there a way to do this in about:config?

    See:
You could create a Greasemonkey script to add a spellcheck="false" attribute or create a bookmarklet to add the attribute.

  • How to disable automatic spell checking on Firefox Mobile?

    Hello,
I installed Firefox onto my N900, and its spell checking functionality annoys me very much. I usually type in a language that it doesn't support, and even in English it sometimes underlines words which it doesn't have in its dictionary.
I know all I have to do is set "layout.spellcheckDefault" to 0 in about:config, but I can't do that... double clicking the setting name just zooms in and out, and there is no way to disable it (or I haven't found it) from the Settings UI.
Finally, I did it by manually editing the following file:
    /home/opt/mozilla/fennec-1.0.0/defaults/preferences/mobile.js
However, in my opinion, a simple solution should be presented for more casual users.

  • Disable default Spell-Check (Spotlight, Stickies...)

I know where the "Spelling and Grammar" menus are, and how to uncheck their "Check Spelling While Typing" default options.
Anyway, even after I use them with the Spell-checker disabled, Spell-Check is back, re-enabled by default as soon as I close the app or I logout-login.
What I would like to set is NO spelling-check by default, especially in two places I use a lot:
Spotlight Comments (in a Get Info window)
    and
    Stickies.
    Thanks in advance!

I was looking to change this for textedit, but I found that it's in the preferences (duh!).
    Don't know about Spotlight.
    Hope this helps!

  • Disable auto spell check

Is there any way to set iPhoto to NOT "Check Spelling while typing" by default ? I know I can set that every time I type in a text box, but I want to make that the preference. Really annoying to see those red underlines in every text box simply because I use a specialized vocabulary.

Run the Spell checker and for those specialized words click on the Learn button. They won't be highlighted any more after that.

  • I want to disable Safari spell checker

While I'm writing this message I see those ridicolous red waves that underline some words (Why only some?).
Is it a Safari 3.0.4 issue or this site (and also other sites) issue?
The same did not happen with previous versions of Safari.
These underlinings do not show when I write italian words.
I searched this forum, Safari menus, help and preferences. But I could not find how to disable it.

Quit Safari and paste the command line below in the Terminal - then press Return.
    I works for me.
defaults write com.apple.Safari WebContinuousSpellCheckingEnabled -bool NO
    Good luck,
    Tom

  • SP2013: How do I disable auto spell check on apppart when editing a publishing page?

Each time I "checked in" a page it was common to receive a dialog reporting a huge number of spelling errors.but there is no error on page...it is taking "Apppart" list items errors and wherever we have that weppart on pages it
is showing 123/124 spelling error(s) found.
and i'm unable to remove those errors. Is it defualt sharepoint functionality to get error from webpart data (I think its default functionality)
or how can i avoide those errors from publishing page?
    Thanks in advance........

  • Disable Spell Check

    Hello,
I'd like to disable the spell check that is driving me crazy.
Is there a general preference panel where I can deactivate this option?
If not, should I use this code in the Terminal?
defaults write NSGlobalDomain NSAutomaticSpellingCorrectionEnabled -bool NO
    Thank you?

    runbobbyrun wrote:

    that looks right to me.
or you can do it this way:
Launch System Preferences, either by clicking the System Preferences icon in the Dock, or by selecting System Preferences from the Apple menu.
Click the Language & Text preference pane.
In the Language & Text preference pane, select the Text tab.
To enable the automatic spelling check, place a check mark next to the Correct Spelling Automatically item.
To disable the automatic spelling check, remove the check mark next to the Correct Spelling Automatically item.

  • Disable spell check on Curve 9320

    Hi all,
I'm an Italian living in UK and I need to text and write emails both in Italian and English.
Is there a way to completely disable the spell checker? I don't want to keep switching languages and it's quite annoying to be corrected everytime I type in a different language than the one which is set in the phone.
    Thanks in advance,
    Alex

you may check/ uncheck options as per your requirement.
    Thanks..!!

  • WGM: is it possible to disable Word 2008 spell check with WGM?

We have users that will use their macbooks to an exam where the teacher asks if htere is a possiblity to disable the spell check in Word.
Thanks for any help i can get ...
    OSX server 10.5.6

    Yes, this should be possible.
Applications store preferences in .plist files, which is basically all WGM does - controls plist files.
You'll want to first identify which attributes with com.microsoft.Word.plist you want to control via WGM (to disable spell check).
You may want to have Property List Editor installed (from developer tools - now on system administrator tools too) and open up /Users/yourusername/Library/Preferences/com.microsoft.Word.plist make a not of its settings. Then open word and change the settings necessary to turn off spell check. Then take a look at the plist file a minute afterward, you should notice some settings have changed. I think the setting may be "2008\Options\Options:AutoSpell", but you'll have to double-check.
Once you know the setting, make a note of it and what the value should be to disable spell check.
Now, open WGM and click a user, group, computer, or computer list object you want to control the spell check to. Click the preferences pane, then click 'DETAILS' (not Overview - which is default).
Now click the PLUS button and browse for the com.microsoft.word.plist from your home folder. You may want to select 'ALWAYS' instead of 'OFTEN' as well. Then click 'ADD'.
Once the plist is added to the list, double click it to edit it (you do not need property list editor for this part), and delete all of the attributes you do not need to control, you just want to leave the 1 or 2 attributes that toggle spell check to be off.
This should take care of it.

  • Disabling spell check

Does anyone know how to permanently disable the spell check/work predictor function on IPad? It's driving me insane, constantly overwriting even my own name. iPad does not seem to have a memory that recognises often used words or unusual nouns and stops correcting you. Some of its suggestions are totally bizarre! just now it's even offered it's when its is the correct usage. Aagh.

    Go to Settings>General>Keyboard
Turn auto correction off. I also turned off auto capitalization and spell checking.

  • Spell check disable?

Anyone know a way to disable the spell check in safari? I find it kind of annoying.

Edit menu > Spelling and select "Check spelling as you type" (which will uncheck that option).
Same thing works in other apps that use Apple's spellchecker (e.g. Mail).
    Hope this helps...
