Disable context menus in Start Screen in Windows 8.1 Update 1

Is there a way to disable the context menus introduced with Windows 8.1 Update 1?  They make customizing the Start screen much less user friendly than it was previously.
For example, if I want to move/customize multiple tiles, I have to either do it individually or hold control when clicking on the tiles.  Previously I could just right click multiple tiles and it would select them all (which is much easier since it
only involves the mouse).
One of the reasons I liked the Start screen was not needing to navigate menu trees of varying complexity.  The context menus are re-introducing that, and I'd prefer to not use them if it was possible.

  • ENVY dv7 laptop - Start screen in Windows 8 just flashes, can't get past that.

    Hello - the other night my daughter unplugged the AC adaptor to work away from her desk. Then, she plugged it in again and the screen was blank. She restarted, click on the User and the screen was just black. We shut down and started again and it would power up, then bring up the User prompt, but after you clicked that, the Windows 8 Start screen would just flash and you couldn't click on anything.
    I have followed directions for a hard reset (removing the battery, discharging any extra power and starting back up w/out peripherals attached), but that didn't work. I also tried disabling Windows Error Reporting Service and that didn't work. Also, I ran a quick systems check that said everying passed. Wondering what else I can try?
    Thanks for any help!

    Please check if you find it under system config and if you dont find it then refer to the steps mentioned below to do the test.
    System Diagnostics allows you to run diagnostic tests to determine if the computer hardware is functioning properly.
    To start System Diagnostics:
    1. Turn on or restart the computer, quickly press esc, and then press f2.
    2. Click the diagnostic test you want to run, and then follow the on-screen instructions.

  • Removing HP registration tile from start screen in Windows 8.1

    I registered my new laptop with HP. I try to delete the HP registration tile from the start screen and I cannot complete the directions as I never get an option to unpin the tile from start. Help would be appreciated.... DD

    Hi, I just uninstalled that tile from a Windows 8.1 computer. Here's how I did it:
    Right-click the tile.
    In the options bar that pops up at the bottom of the screen, click the Uninstall icon (the graphic looks like a garbage can).
    In the list of options that pops-up, click Uninstall.
    Hope that helps! Post again if you have any more questions.

  • How to disable context menus hiding when accidentally clicking non-text?

    I have Googled and searched the Apple support board for this everywhere, and cannot find this addressed specifically. What I would like to do is disable how the context menu (for toolbars, right click, whatever)  automatically disappears if you accidentally click one of the dividers or any white space in the menu, instead of one of the actual text options. I keep doing this numerous times throughout the day on accident and it is driving me mad haha.
    To get an idea, right click anything in Firefox for example (except for the top menu bar) - and in the context menu that pops up move your cursor so it's not highlighting anything and click  (like the menu's grey divider bar). The menu will stay popped up even if you click, just like they do in Windows. In every other Mac menu, it instantly just closes that menu. Firefox is the only app for Mac I have seen do this, but I'm sure there are others.
    Seems like kind of a minor thing (which is probably why I can't find anything lol), but I move between apps and menus all day long and use a touchpad so I'm bound to accidentally click just below an option all the time... Then I have to move cursor back to toolbar, highlight menu option again, and find where any sub-options were - sometimes can be in numerous sub-menus! Any help is greatly appreciated!! Thanks

    Ok, here you go.
    In your context, apart from your display fields, add another attribute READ_ONLY, type char01. And lets assume you want the field by name field_1 to be editable or not based on some validation. Your code will be like this to initialize the ALV.
    DATA:
              l_alv_model               TYPE REF TO cl_salv_wd_config_table,
              lr_column_settings        TYPE REF TO if_salv_wd_column_settings,
              lr_column                 TYPE REF TO cl_salv_wd_column,
              lt_col                    TYPE SALV_WD_T_COLUMN_REF,
              ls_col                    TYPE SALV_WD_S_COLUMN_REF,
              lr_input_field            type ref to cl_salv_wd_uie_input_field.
        l_alv_model = l_ref_interfacecontroller->get_model( ).
        l_alv_model->IF_SALV_WD_TABLE_SETTINGS~SET_READ_ONLY( abap_false ).
        lr_column_settings ?= l_alv_model.
        lt_col = lr_column_settings->get_columns( ).
        LOOP AT lt_col INTO ls_col where ID = 'FIELD_1'.
             create object lr_input_field exporting value_fieldname = ls_col-id.
             lr_input_field->set_read_only_fieldname( 'READ_ONLY' ).
             ls_col-r_column->set_cell_editor( lr_input_field ).
        ENDLOOP.
    In your event handler, you read your node, do a get_static_attributes_table. Perform all validations. Loop through your internal table and set the field READ_ONLY as 'X' when validation succeeds. Do READ_ONLY = space when validation fails. Then do a bind_elements. Now the rows for which read_only is false, will be editable and vice versa.
    Hope I was clear enough. Get back if you have any doubts.

    Hi
    It indicates your hard drive is facing iminent failure/has failed.
    You have to replace the HDD, contact HP in your region for replacement if you're covered under warranty.
    Please also read the following article:

  • Aspire R7 572G having a black screen after windows 8.1 update. What should I do

    Hi all, Im wondering, anybody encounter this problem before, Im having trouble with this black screen after boot, it happened yesterday I think microsoft must have updated some of the drivers rendering my screen black after booting. Initially i thought it was my SSD but it turns out i can enter into Safe Mode.  I read more about this problem related to other PCs, and try the recommended method of "disabling" the Intel GMA HD drivers. It worked, however, it only means the primary driver is now reduced to a standard video graphic card with limited vram.  I have tried rolling back and even redownloading then reinstalling the intel driver into the version VGA_Intel_9.18.10.3215. The blackscreen after boot still occured. Did i miss something?

  • How do you either set "Show More Tiles" or Start Screen rows via command line or script for Windows 8.1?

    Is there a method to change the Start Screens number of rows (similar to Windows 8.0's use of the Explorer\Scaling\MonitorSize in registry). Possibly by forcing the switch for "Show More Tiles" via script etc? This is to enable the device with
    Windows 8.1 to be built using a deployment methodology like SCCM and have the Tiles correctly configured as required for a standard look and feel across devices. I do not know why all these switches are not represented in either WMI or the registry to enable
    the customization of look and feel out of the box for enterprise deployments.
    Thanks for any assistance possible.

  • Start Screen Layout not applying to every user

    Ok, i'm stuck.  I have a 2012r2  DC with a 2012r2 terminal server.  I exported the xml file to be the start screen layout and have it applied to a specific user OU with my two users in it.  One gets the layout the other does not (metro
    layout btw)  Same users, same permissions, in the same OU.  Tried to gpupdate with no luck, the only difference I can tell is one users existed and the other I created brand new to test with.
    User config - policies - admin templates - start menus & taskbar - start screen layout
    this OU is blocked from inheritence for testing purposes.  I have also deleted all references to the non-woking user locally on the server and tried to re-login.  No dice.

    Can see the Start Screen more or less works as the Start Screen in Windows 8. However, the coupling features needs to be there. It's a mess.
    And there is still the ambiguity between the Taskbar (= Start) and the Start Screen (= Start). It's the same thing, pinning.
    And they should relate to desktop virtualization.
    May be you could have the icons on the current task bar flow with the start screen area? Work the coloring - and the "ease out" of the menu. So it would seem the task bar is just extending into a bigger area. Then as a user you
    could put the pins used on a daily basis at the very bottom. And the ones used weekly on the Start Screen for instance.
    Additionally,  grouping of pins is needed. That was a nice feature on the Start Screen. And it should be available on the task bar for pins as well - now that the task bar and the Start Screen should be more or less merged as in this
    proposition.

    I agree. I think the Start Menu tiles should function EXACTLY the same as the Start Screen tiles, which includes the arrangement options in groups as well as the ability to multi-select/pin/move/unpin tiles.
    I would also add that I'd like an option to hide the search and task-switcher buttons from the taskbar. Task switcher is redundant considering you can also swipe and keyboard-shortcut that feature. Search is accessible from Start Menu, although
    I understand that once Cortana is enabled via Search button that might change my opinion of its usefulness there.

  • Suggestion: Please make a Visual Studio Solution Explorer that is similar to Windows 8 Start Screen

    We have monitors now that are enormous and it is now the norm to develop on three or more monitors.  Yet we still try to crowd project navigation info that pleads to be fully visualized into a tiny window as if expanding it is somehow a waste of space.
    I mention Windows 8 start screen in the title of this post.  I have no particular love for the start screen except that it is a different spin on a strict hierarchical display of information.  I like that it has the objective of using all available
    screen space to present information that would otherwise be shown in a tiny corner of the screen.  So my suggestion in its most general form is for you guys to find a way to use the entire screen to allow a developer to quickly and easily navigate a large
    VS project.
    For example, even if I fully expand the Solution Explorer to take up the space of an entire monitor the top level nodes of my project take up a tiny fraction of the available screen space - I have to drill down up to 12 levels to reach my files.  And when
    I get to the point where I think I see the file I want, the higher level folders have scrolled off the screen so I loose my place in the project.
    A couple of suggestions for a new Solution Explorer:
    Edit: Make the Solution Explorer more like the Windows 8 Start screen or a file directory browser in the sense that Start Screen is a full-screen navigation screen versus a control that is primarily desigend to be docked.  If I maximize Solution Explorer
    on my monitor the MOST screen space it will use is about 20% down the left edge of my screen.  Even with 80% of my screen left EMPTY, I am clicking and clicking and scrolling and clicking and scrolling in order to navigate to where I need to be. /Edit
    Show an always-visible breadcrumb across the top of the window so the user can navigate up quickly and also maintain a sense of location within the project.
    Show folders and files horizontally and vertically.  USE THE ENTIRE WINDOW! Allow different views just as we see in Windows file explorer.
    Allow (large) user defined icons to be associated with projects, folders and files.  Instead of showing the same icon for every project in a solution, default to a unique icon.  Thats why we use icons, right?
    Allow projects and folders to have foreground/background color properties.
    "Scope to this" on the context menu is great... please add the root name on the tab.
    It would also be very helpful to display the full directory and solution name on the VS title bar to avoid confusion when working with different versions of the same project.  There are a couple add-ons that do this... why has it become necessary for add-ons.

  • Context Menus In ListView Windows Phone 8.1

    Hi there,
    I'm in the process of porting my Win 8 app to WP 8.1, and one of the things I'm having trouble with is handling selection and context menus in ListViews
    In WP you use the context menu (hold and press to bring up a menuFlyout), but there doesn't seem to be any specific event to be able to get the item selected, and can't find the old method to use it (the toolkit) in the NuGet manager.
    I've tried writing an holding event for the listview, but I get an exception trying to get the container:
    private void ListView_Holding(object sender, HoldingRoutedEventArgs e)
    switch (e.HoldingState)
    case Windows.UI.Input.HoldingState.Canceled:
    break;
    case Windows.UI.Input.HoldingState.Completed:
    break;
    case Windows.UI.Input.HoldingState.Started:
    ListView listView = (ListView)sender;
    var item = listView.ItemContainerGenerator.ContainerFromItem(e.OriginalSource);
    if (item != null)
    System.Diagnostics.Debug.WriteLine(item.GetType());
    else
    System.Diagnostics.Debug.WriteLine("No item found!");
    break;
    default:
    break;
    Sorry if this is a newbie question, this is my first time really dealing with WP. Any help would be appreciated!

    Couple questions to clarify your situation.    You mentioned upgrading your app to WP 8.1 from WP 8.  Does this mean you are moving from Silverlight 8 to Windows Phone XAML 8.1 apps or SL 8.1 apps?
    For Silverlight 8.1 Apps it should work as it did before.  If you are migrating to the new Windows Phone 8.1 XAML applications then use a
