Disable download protection only. "Blocked: may contain virus or spyware"

Is there a way to do this. Many legitimate downloads are blocked by this behaviour.
Why isn't the download stopped the moment it is initiated? (spend hours downloading legitimate files and documents only to realize firefox deletes them without any user intervention) and why is there no option to recover the download?
So far the only way to fix this issue seems to be:
a) use a different browser
b) systematically lower the security settings for the browser to download a file then re-enable the options (browser.safebrowsing.enabled and browser.safebrowsing.malware.enabled)

As far as I know Firefox does not delete downloads. However it does screen them:
* http://kb.mozillazine.org/Browser.safebrowsing.malware.enabled
I would not recommend turning them off, however if you are downloading, it is possible to put them in another folder.

What you're seeing is a standard Windows warning about ANY executable file you can download.
Adobe isn't, and never has been, in the business of making malware. That said, there are literally millions of fake downloads of things like Reader, Shockwave and Flash Player.
Bottom line: If you don't trust the download... DON'T USE the download.

i would like to disable download history only, i tried the "clear history when firefox exits" option checking the download history only, but it didn't work. the download window is clear, but everything is there in the download history.
is there a way to disable download history only, leaving the others intact?

it was used while i was a college student and the thumb drive always says it has not room left even though I have barely anything on it.

You can use the free ClamXav on the Mac to scan and remove the infected malware on it or like said above, simply use Disk Utility to reformat the USB FAT32 and it will be fine for any use.

I have also noticed that that there is an issue when I select the option to skip the message by selecting '''Yes'''. The body of a one message is replacing the body of one of the other messages that is downloaded (i.e. body of facebook message replacing body of message from amazon). This has been seen multiple times.

Hi. Thanks for your prompt reply. The error message is generated in Thunderbird and not by my anti-virus software. It is also specific to one email account and does not affect the others.
I have around 40Gb unused space on my hard drive.
The From and Subject fields in the error message contain the sender's email address and subject header respectively (these didn't show in my original email)
I have also moved a lot of messages from mu inbox.
I have not changed my anti-virus software (and have been using the same package for years

I use pfsense as my firewall and see the traffic not reseting to zero when I cancel download.
Also, IE doesn't have this problem. When I cancel the download the traffic drops to zero.

And this problem seems to be systemwide. Since I created a new user and under which problem still exists.

Android has a find and lock feature built in that is accessible from your Google account. Just Google "Android Device Manager" and you can find/lock/erase your Android device from that page.
You have to activate it on your Android device first, but it's a quick setup.
Open the Google Settings App.
Click Android Device Manager.
Check the boxes.
Done.

On mozilla's OWN WEBSITE I get the message 'Your Firefox is out of date and may contain a security risk!" but I just download and installed the latest version?

I have the latest version of firefox to date (10/15/2014 v32) and I still get messages while on various websites (Youtube, Google, Gmail) telling me that Your Firefox is out of date and may contain a security risk.
I even get that message on the support pages of mozilla.org??
I've tried the about:config reset the useragent(s) fix but that doesn't work.
I've tried browsing in safe mode and still get the error.

Try to perform a clean boot then install the CRM 2013 for Microsoft Office Outlook.
To perform a clean boot:
Log on to the computer by using an account that has administrator rights.
Click Start, type msconfig.exe in the Start Search box, and then press Enter to start the System Configuration utility.

Photo name .jpg may contain an application alert

When I attach a digital photo edited by Photoshop Element 2.0 to an email to send out, and double click on the embedded photo in the email to see it at full size, I get an alert that says:
"CIMG6687A.jpg" may contain an application. The safety of this file cannot be determined. Are you sure you want to open "CIMG6687A.jpg"?
CIMG6687A.jpg is a Photoshop-edited photo that I attached to the email. It shows up fine in the email in the reduced size, and I can drag the embedded photo to the desktop, double click it there, and Preview opens it at full size without any similar warning. What is going on here?
Also, like another poster, I frequently have problems with my friends not being able to open my photo attachments on their PC's. Saving to disk sometimes works, but not always. This seems to be more of a problem with the Photoshop edited files, but it happens with unedited photos as well. I thought JPG was a universal format recognized on all platforms...

The particular photos I have had problems with are those taken by my Casio Exilim (EX-S3) digital camera, and subsequently modified by Photoshop Elements 2.0. Not every Photoshop photo is so affected. I have not been able to determine if the nature of the modification (cropping, color balancing, brightness & contrast adjustment, etc.) is related to the false alarm security alert or not. I am still experimenting with that. And again, I only get the alert when expanding them in the iMac Mail app, not when I open them using Preview. And yet I know the Mac OS checks to see if data files (.txt, .jpg, .mp3, .tif, etc.) contain hidden executables and warns you of that on launch. So I don't know why the problem arises only in the Mail app.
On a more general matter. I am unclear how a jpg can be modified to execute code as noted by Kurt above. I know this is a problem, but from my 30 years of writing code I always thought there was a clear distinction between applications and data files. The latter could not be executed as code, just read. So when a PC opens a jpg file, presumably the application doing the opening is the code that is executing, and the bytes read from the file are used to display the image. Even if virus code is riding on back of the jpg, how does it ever get executed? (I am not talking about exe files that have had their extensions changed to .jpg to fool people -- I am talking about actual image files that may have had additional virus code appended to (or embedded in) it. How does that code ever get executed?
The closest thing I can think of to this problem is a self-extracting archive. In that case the data and extraction code are merged into one file, so that the recipient can extract the data files without having to own the extraction software. But in this case, the merge is intentional. (Although, that very fact makes downloading such files from the internet very hazardous.) But a jpg file was never intended to be executable in any way, right? So any application designed to read it, would not be using the read data as executable instructions. So just how does a virus in a jpg file ever infect a PC?

If you create a metadatatype with a single metdata block, and you reference that in your vm/cm cell attribute using a *one* based index, Excel seems to see the link and it honors it when saving the spreadsheet.

I have disabled my pop up blocker but it still does not open pop up windows on certain sites.

I work on Windows XP, Firefox 3.6.8, webbook, 3Connect broadband dongle.
I have disabled my pop up blocker in options, but I still can not access, among others, ebay's 'add tracking number' window, the image library on www.demandstudios.com and the log in pop up on my bank's website. Is there another place I have to disable the pop up blockers? I have virus checked my web book, emptied the cache etc.
Help or tips would be much appreciated. Thank you.

That suggests that the installer is getting damaged during the download.
I'd first try downloading an installer from the Apple website using a different web browser:
http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
If you use Firefox instead of IE for the download (or vice versa), do you get a working installer?

It's a JavaScript scam that only affects your web browser, and only temporarily.
1. Some of those scam pages can be dismissed very easily. Press command-W to close the tab or window. A huge box will pop up. Press the return key and both the box and the page will close. If that doesn't happen, continue.
2. From the Safari menu bar, select
Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Security
and uncheck the box marked Enable JavaScript. Leave the preferences dialog open.
Close the malicious window or tab.
Re-enable JavaScript and close the preferences dialog.
