Disable DVD Fan?

I recently had my computer into the Genius Bar to diagnose a loud buzzing in the computer. It's a DVD (Optical) Fan. I couldn't be without my computer for the two or three days it would take them to fix it, so I left with the assurance that even if the fan burns itself out, it wouldn't be trouble and that I could fix it when I felt I had the time.
My question is: Can I disable the fan in the mean time?
I don't do a lot with the Optical drive anyways.

No, and I would strongly disagree with the "genius" at the bar. While the primary function of the fan is to deal with the heat from the optical drive, it is also responsible for cooling a few other things. In the latest model iMacs, there's a metal plate that sits under the optical drive that is part of the CPU cooling mechanism. It's a heatsink of sorts. You disable the optical drive fan, you disable the airflow that helps convect the bleed off heat from the CPU.
Besides that, the only real way to disable this fan is to disconnect it from the logic board, and that means disassembling the system. At a minimum, you have to take off the glass panel on the front, and then the LCD panel under it.
What I would suggest you do, is try and convince them to order the part and then give you a call when it comes in. Then you can take your system in, they can swap out the fan, and you are on your merry way. This is like a 10 minute repair, so you should be able to just hang about while it's done. If the Apple store won't do that, check for any AASPs in your area, see if they're willing to do something like that. Anyone working at an AASP (and doing the actual repairs) has had the same training as anyone at an Apple store, and odds are they're going to be better than the person you spoke with who is talking out of their arse.
Apple has this strange idea that you can teach people to be a good technician. Sure, you can teach just about anyone how to do the actual repairs, but you can't really teach the ability to see how the different parts all come together to make a whole. There's a certain level of intuition that goes with it. AASPs will often times focus more on the technical abilities of people when they're hiring techs. Apple's recruitment method is excellent if you're looking for sales staff, but not so much for technical staff. At least at their retail level. Corporate may be different.

  • IMac gpu Heatsink reading -192, DVD fan on full blast

Recently had a problem where my DVD fan would turn on full blast. Did SMC update through apple, smc reset, pram reset. everything. Download iStat after none of that worked, and it said my gpu heatsink was at -192 degrees F. Obviously thats not right. What could this be?

Sounds like a faulty sensor or loose sensor cable.

  • How to disable dynamic fan speed?

I have MSI 865P Neo. How to disable dynamic fan speed?

jpscwf:  Personaly I always keep my fans on maximum anyway so I havn't tried saving settings at a lower level, better to have too much cooling anyway, rather than have your chip burn up..
netreaper:  I may be wrong, but if your not running the corecell program then I don't think the fan speeds are adjusted.  In any case, follow the instructions I gave above, and set both the fan speeds to maximum, that way you allways get the maximum cooling possible.  Problem solved.

  • Imac dvd fan turns on randomly full blast

Hello all, new to the forum; I recently added an iMac 12.1 (mid 2011) to my many computers. I had the common grey blemish problem where I took the LCD apart and cleaned it(not that bad). But I've noticed recently that my DVD fan will randomly turn on and go full blast now for no reason, under little to no use at all. (Using fan controller to tell RPMs). Ive tried the SMC reset a few times, and a PRAM reset 2x. Any suggestions what it could be? I'm out of warrenty, so I'm not paying the apple store a dime to change anything, I have a lenghty IT background; just not on iMacs lol.

In addition, the computer runs perfectly. No lag, no freezing nothing.

  • Unix command to disable DVD drive?

My DVD drive on my 20" intel imac is failing to eject the disk. It won't come out. I have done everything like restarting with the mouse held down etc etc. I am going to buy a cheap external DVD writer as a solution. The drive however is making a noise every 10 secs in what I guess is in an attempt to read the disk or eject it? What ever the noise is I want it to stop! Is there a command I can type in the terminal to kill or disable the drive so it quits trying to do what it is doing?
    Thanks in advance.
    Martin.

Ask at the Unix forum under OS X Technologies. BTW, this Terminal command should eject the disc:
    *drutil eject -drive internal*

  • How to disable DVD rom?

Hi, I have a Cd stuck in the dvd rom drive, I brought it to Apples but there's no way to get it out unless they dissect it. I don't want to do that. But every time on start up and wakes up it makes really loud noises for a few minutes. I have changed the option in system preference to ignore when cd/dvd's inserted but it still tries to run the disc. Is there a way I can disable the dvd rom completely?
    Thanks!!

go to this links http://www.powerbookmedic.com/ they have pdf files of how to disable everything in you powerbook
Aren't those guides for hardware replacement versus disabling the DVD drive from the startup sequence, which I believe is the OP question?

  • Thinkpad Yoga 12 BIOS update disables cooling fan

This sounds a lot like a prior thread about porblems with BIOS 1.08, but that thread ended up marked as solved, while for me the issue returned on the latest BIOS update to 1.12. My CPU temp got up to 92C without the fan coming on. Conclusion: there still seems to be some kind of condition where the BIOS completely disables all cooling. I think it's the same problem as that earlier thread, and it's clearly not solved. Thankfully it IS possible to get out of this state by rolling back the BIOS version to the one that worked, instructions are posted here and three posts below that for further clarification.  Symptoms: you start noticing that the TPY gets oddly hot during normal use, or it experiences a forced shutdown due to overheating. It's also completely quiet. But: the fan itself is operational because you hear it briefly spin up during cold boot.  Given that LoneSentry mentioned that the problematic BIOS 1.08 did work on second install, there seems to be some 'random' glitch in the update process or in the BIOS. Meanwhile I'm pretty unhappy that I'm having to do continued truobleshooting on this machine.   Edit: going to the BIOS update page I saw that a newer BIOS was available (1.13), which you can install without having to disable Secure Rollback. Lo and behold. the fan is working again. The fan started blowing full speed right at the start of the EC flashing procedure. This is NOT a solution though, since this issue seems to have persisted until BIOS 1.12, and I have no reason to believe that it won't reappear on a future update.

Well here I am on the new thread as well - and like heck the issue was resolved on the old thread. As mentioned before by myself and others on the other thread, I would update the BIOS, the fan would work for a while, then it would stop again until I updated the BIOS yet again.HOWEVER, thinking on this, and a variety of other problems I've been having with the TP Yoga (a whole lot - such buggy software), I remembered from my T61 days that the Lenovo System Update software is pretty hit and miss with finding updates. So I went to the Lenovo downloads page for the TP Yoga and indeed found a lot of software not passed onto me by the System Update.Amongst these was (TA-DA !) a utility "Lenovo Fan Test for Windows". I thought it would be useful to install in any case to test if the fan was operating properly (it was not part of the standard suite of diagnostic tools provided on my computer).Anyway since I installed it my fan has worked !!! - but only when my computer is plugged in, though this I believe is because I am using Lenovo Power Optimized (Lenovo Power Manager was another software on the site not provided to me via System Update) which I believe relies on passive cooling (throttling back processor) when only battery power is available. But now TpFan works all the time, though only in smart mode, and when I plug in the power to stream a video the computer doesn't reach boiling point and then shut down.Interesting. My fan diagnostic comes up as unavailable...

  • Disable system fan warning

I have a HP Pavilion runing Win 7.  I recently had the power unit replaced and now get a warning that the system fan is not working, hit F2 to continue, etc.  The fan is working.  Is there a way to disable this warning?

If the replaced power supply was not done by you, then perhaps the fan was not plugged into the correct terminal on the motherboard.  It could also happen if the fan was replaced.  If this warning started after that maintenance and it is verified the fan is running, then it can be ignored at your own risk.  I do not know of a way to disable the warning.

  • Disable dvd-drive

My dvd drive has been making noises whenever I tap the laptop directly above the drive. It has been doing this for a long time now, but lately it has gotten HIGHLY sensitive and buzzes about once a minute if im at the keyboard. It sounds like maybe its trying to recalibrate something, but I never use it anyways so i'd just like to turn it off. Is there a way to do this?

vendt: It would be possible to disconnect the optical drive's flex cable from the logic board, thus rendering the drive completely inert. But I'm not sure whether, with the connector loosed from the LB, it would stick up too high for the keyboard to fit properly back into place. In that case you would have to remove the drive altogether, or remove it temporarily in order to disconnect and remove the flex cable altogether, then put the disconnected drive back in place. Operating the machine with the drive removed might change the feel of it unpleasantly, but if it doesn't, that may be the thing to do.

  • How can I disable DVD player?

Hi, I bought a MacBook in the States and I am using it in Spain where the DVD zone is different. I want to use Video Lan to watch DVDs, but every time I insert a DVD, the DVD player application opens. In DVD player preferences I have unchecked the "start playing when disk is inserted" box, but when I insert a DVD, it keeps on automatically opening the DVD player.
    Suggestions?
    Thanks

Open the CDs & DVDs pane of System Preferences and change the default action to perform when a video DVD is inserted.

  • Dead or disabled fan

My macbooks fan is running at 0rpm. This is very bad, I know. But I may have accidentally downloaded a terminal app r something that disabled my fan somehow. Is there anything I can do to "enable" it again?
I don't think its dead because it will spin up to around 143rpm sometimes, then go back down to zero. And help please?

The only thing I can think of would be to install this...
    http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/23049/smcfancontrol
it will show you the MacBook's current fan speed and allow you to increase it from what should be a base speed of about 1800 rpm's....if that won't work you might try the Apple Hardware Test by booting from your install DVD 1 by holding down the 'D' key

  • ITunes 10.1 installed but it disabled the driver for my DVD player

I uninstalled iTunes and the DVD player worked.  It also worked with iTunes 10.5.0. But then I reinstalled 10.5.1.42 with the same results--disabled DVD.
Anyone with similar problem or with suggestions???

some dvd players are very picky on what they will play some only

  • Disable fan in non-unibody macbook pro

    Hi
My girlfriend has an old Macbook Pro non-unibody from 2007.
I know there is some automated fan control already in the Macbook.
But it goes on full speed at times where its not really needed.
So I installed smc fan control and it fixed it for the most part, but the "original" fan control takes over when it deems it necessary (and in this case it rarely is).
I would like to rely on the fan speed set in smc fan control and not what the Macbook thinks it should be doing.
So is there a way of disabling the original fan control without disabling the fans. So it's only smc fan control that dictates the fan speed, even if it means it's too warm.
I know it can reduce the life span of the fans and the macbook pro itsself. But at this point it doesn't matter. Macbook Pros from 2007 are fairly cheap and it's annoying for my girlfriend to have the fans on full speed even though it's only running Word and not noticeably hot.
    It's running Mavericks.
    Thanks

Dealing with Apple is all about the warranty. They stand behind everything they do.
For this reason, they don't tend to be intersted in touching anything not provided by Apple.
Your appointment at the genius Bar for an evaluation is free, in warranty or out. If the genius can make you a happy customer for a few minutes work and no parts, he may just do any re-connection you need, but there is no standing policy or standard charge.
There may be third-party laptop repair guys who would be happy to do what you are looking for, for a fee to be negotiated.
