Disable iPhoto

I recently wiped my iBook and when I next connected my digital camera it came up with a notice that said something like, 'do you wish to start iPhoto everytime you connect your digital camera'. Because I was in a bit of a rush, I accidentally clicked yes, despite the fact that I use a different peice of software that Canon provided to organise and download my photos.
How do I turn this feature off? I'm fed up with seeing iPhoto show up everytime I plug in my digital camera or a memory card. I've tried quite a few places, but any help you can offer would be greatly appreciated. If possible, I'd like to set my iBook to start up the Canon software instead everytime I plug in the digital camera.

Hi, Tom
Sorry about the late reply to your question. Daniel Gilmour told me how to fix the problem. I'm not sure quite why you weren't able to view his response, but even so;
Find the program 'Image Capture' in your Applications folder
You may get a message that complains 'No Image Capture device connected' . Ignore it.
In the title bar (or whatever it's called) click on 'Image Capture' and then Preferences on the drop-down menu
On the menu that pops up, select the tab 'Camera'
Change the 'When a camera is connected, open:'
If you wish to select the Canon Camera Window software that most likely came with your digital camera, click 'Other' on this screen.
Find the folder 'Canon Utilities' in your Applications folder.
Browse through into the 'Camera Window' folder.
Select 'Camera Window'
Now, when you connect your Canon camera, the Canon Camera Window software will start up instead of iPhoto. Alternatively, it's not that hard to stop any applications starting up by clicking 'No Application'
Close the 'Image Capture' program when you're done.
I hope this helps.

Trying to figure out how to disable iphoto from automatically launching on my Macbook Pro every time I plug in my iphone via USB cable. Tried looking at preferences in iphoto and itunes, but can't seem to find anything. Thanks!

Try updating to iPhoto 9.4.1. If it's not appearing in your Software Update yet, try updating using a .dmg installer downloaded from the following page on the Apple website:

  • Disable iPhoto auto launch w/ plist?

I know you can disable iPhoto auto launch from the Image Capture app, but I would like to know where Image Capture saves its preferences so I can disable it by editing or replacing a plist.
I need to change preferences on a whole lab of Macs, and I would prefer to do it remotely on all of them at once if possible.
I looked but I can't seem to find where the preferences are saved. If anyone knows or knows of an easy way to do it let me know. Thanks.
    Power Mac G4   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

It seems to be this file:
    "/Users/yourname/Library/Preferences/ByHost/com.apple.ImageCapture2.00039343a1a8 .plist"
At any rate, that is the file that contains this entry, as the sole thing in the file:
    HotPlugActionPath String /Applications/Image Capture.app
So you can try adding/deleting this file and see if that will do what you want.

  • How to disable iPhoto from starting up when I connect a camera?

I don't use iPhoto, but annoyingly, it starts itself every time I connect my camera to my iMac. How do I disable this? There seems to be nothing in "Preferences".
I have iPhoto 4. One of the gripes that I have, and a reason I don't use or update iPhoto, is that it seems to be impossible to upload just SOME of the photos in my camera. It's all or nothing. Does anyone know if later versions of iPhoto have fixed this?

Odd because when I went to the apple store to talk to their "genius bar" when I had a problem with my laptop they said " you can't change that option"i was like...are you kidding me???? So after all this time I finally find this option in the apple forums. T hank you guys this really helped me. I was sick and tired of it starting up every time i connect my digi cam or iphone.

  • How can I disable iPhoto automatic launch?

    Hi,
I do not use iPhoto to import my digital images. How can I disable the automatic launch when I plug my camera or card reader?
    Thanks!

    Hi Paul,
To do this just open Image Capture, open its preferences and then under the general tab you can select the option of "When a camera is connected, open:"
Just select no application and that should do it.

Don't get my wrong, I love iPhoto for my pictures of friends and family, but is there a way to disable the autorun feature on iPhoto so that I can use bridge instead????
    Thanks for any input!

  • Disable iPhoto as default camera import programmme

On my other computer (G3 B&W 400 DVD 2nd Rev with OWC 500MHz G4 ZIF + 1GB RAM running 10.3.9), when I plug in my digital camera, iPhoto starts up automatically. I want to use another programme to import photos and have to first force quit iPhoto. Is there a pref setting I can't find to disable that and select another programmme to start?

Open ImageCapture in apps and set it's prefs
to whatever default program you want it to open when
    the camera is connected
Thanks but I only see options for "DOWNLOAD TO", and AUTOMATIC TASK (occurs after downloading). Further options in fact do not offer choice of programme to make the download.

  • Disable iphoto when importing digi pics?

whenever i load pics from my camera, iphoto automatically opens. how do i disable this?

Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, and THANK YOU.
Aaaaargh! I've been trying to figure that out foh-eva! No offense to anyone who likes eyeFoto, but I didn't buy Adobe CS so that popping in a memory card launches a program that makes a cryptic hierarchy of folders that cannot be navigated in Finder without heavy medication!!!! Let me make my own freekin folders, in a way that makes sense! Ooooof!
Bless you, you have released me from eyePhoto heck!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Disable iPhoto Sync

How can the iPhoto sync be disabled. I want only to share photos through network streaming. This is not documented in Apple Support or the Apple TV manual/users guide. Somehow, I've got iPhoto in sync mode in iTunes. I want to disable this mode, then switch to streaming.

To stop the Syncing, do the following
    Go to Mac HD
    Go to Applications
    Open image capture
Next to the apple icon in the top left hand corner click on image capture
    Click on preferences
Change the top drop down box to no application

  • Disable iPhoto Import

    Re: iPhoto / iLife '11
I attempted to follow the only posting I could find dated 2006. Apparently, the selection/prefernces process has changed.  I simply want to disable auto-import of photos into iPhoto. I cannot find a ‘Preference’ setting/option within 'Image Capture' or within the ‘Image Capture Help’ menu. Please advise.

From what source would a folder or app come from?
You make folders using the finder or other file management software - you install Apps
iPads don't have folders (as far as I am aware) and their apps are different to an iMac so you wouldn't want to do this?
And of course this does not apply to an iPad - there is no Image Capture application for the iPad and this is not the iPad forum - it is the iPhoto for Mac forum and posts here relate to iphoto on the Mac only - if you  do not want iphoto to launch then obviously you would want to do this no matter what other devices you might own

  • How to disable iPhoto auto open?

When I plug my iOS device into my Mac with iTunes open, it automatically opens iPhoto.  Is there a way to disable this?

    Hello there wasylultra,
It sounds like your computer is becoming unresponsive whenever you plug in any USB device that has or takes photos, because iPhoto launches automatically and takes a while to open. You can change this preference in iPhoto itself to open either iPhoto, Image Capture, or no application at all when you connect a device:
iPhoto '11: Change what happens when you connect a camera to your computer
To choose the application that opens:
Make sure no cameras are connected to your computer.
Choose iPhoto > Preferences, and then click General.
Choose an option from the “Connecting camera opens” pop-up menu.
The title of the article mentions iPhoto '11 but the same steps hold true for iPhoto 2013.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    All the best,
    Sterling

  • OS X Mavericks and disabled iphoto library

After installing Mavericks OS X my iphoto library and all photos are disabled.  How do I restore the photos? I have a time machine backup from about a month ago, but am not sure how to go about uninstalling Mavericks so I can access my photos. I saw the prior discussion and documents about how to uninstall Mavericks but I am worried it is too complex for me to do.
Not sure this is the right community, so if not, please suggest an alternative
    Thanks much!

Thank you. So if I copy the library to an external drive of some sort that would be one way to do it. Is it possible to copy it to another location on my Mac? If I do copy it to another location on my Mac it will still be subject to the Mavericks OS so still would not work, I am thinking. I already have photos that I cannot see since they were taken a long time ago and when I migrated them to this Mac I lost the ability to see the actual photo (I can see a dotted line on the thumbnail). I have read on the community forum about how to deal with that issue though.

  • Disabling iPhoto/System Preferences integration

I've got a few users IDs on my systemn, and only one
of them has photos imported via iPhoto ... and even
then, I don't want the photos available as a screensaver.
My screensaver is set to 'random', which means that
every once in while I get a screensaver with the
text 'No pictures in this directory'.
I want to remove the iPhoto albums from the Desktop
and Screen Saver preferences panes -- either per
user, or system-wide. So far IU have been able to
remove everything but 'Library' using the iPhotos
preferences, and I can remove Library by deleting
~/Pictures/iPhoto\ Library [but it is re-created
    each time iPhoto is run].
I've done a bit of searching around in the BOMs for
iPhoto, the iPhoto user and application dirs, and
the frameworks for ScreenSaver. Doing a grep for
'iPhotoLibrary' brings up a few binary files
which match, but not text files.
Is this path hard-coded into the Screensaver
applicstion, and if so, what the h3ll is wrong with
Apple's programmers? Is there any way short of
uninstalling iPhoto to remove the iPhoto albums
from the ScreenSaver prefs, or to make the random
    screensaver disable them?
    [Update: I did a chmod a-rx ~/Pictures/iPhoto\ Library
and that is a hack solution: I get an error message
running iPhoto, and have to Force-Quit iPhoto to
exit it. This is supposedly UNIX, we can do better!]

  • Installing iLife 08 was a HUGH MISTAKE, how do I now disable iPhoto?

If I had known prior to installing iLife 08 that iPhoto was going to restrict access to the iPhoto Library from all other programs I would never had installed iLife 08 in the first place! I have Photoshop CS3 with Bridge but now I can't access the iPhoto Library with anything other than iPhoto! I'd prefer to use Bridge so how do I now disable the iPhoto portion of iLife so I can (permanently) regain access to the library of photos I have stored there?

    imacpaul
iPhoto does not restrict access to all other programs.
If you prefer to use Bridge then simply right click on the iPhoto Library pkg. file in the Finder and go 'Show package Cotents'. You will see all your pics in there, exactly as in v6. You can simply drag them out and arrange them as you please.
If you're still interested in using iPhoto: There are three ways (at least) to get files from the iPhoto Window.
    1. Drag and Drop: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
    2. File -> Export: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
    3. Show File: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.
The change was made to the format of the iPhoto library because many users were inadvertently corrupting their library by browsing through it with other software (such as Bridge) or making changes in it themselves. If you're willing to risk database corruption, you can restore the older functionality simply by right clicking on the iPhoto Library and choosing 'Show Package Contents'. Then simply make an alias to the folders you require and put that alias on the desktop or where ever you want it. Be aware though, that this is a hack and not supported by Apple.
Of course, if you set PS as an external editor in the iPhoto preferences, then you can round-trip pics from iPhoto to PS and back again, without using Bridge.
However, if you wish to use two organisers (Bridge and iPhoto) then your best option is to do the file management yourself: Create a new library and in iPhoto Preferences uncheck the 'Copy Files to iPhoto Library...' box at Advanced. Then you can create your own file structure and iPhoto will reference the files there. But be aware that if you choose this option importing and delteing pics are multi-stage operations and migrating to a new machine or HD can be more complex.
    Regards
    TD
