Disable iSight without disabling other USB webcams

    Hello,
Hopefully someone can help me.  I need to disable the built-in iSight camera on a Macbook Pro but allow other USB connected webcams to function.  Specifically, I'm using a program called Witness that uses USB webcams as a motion triggered security system.  The problem is that in order for the softwrae to utilize more than one camera, each camera must be on its own high-spoeed bus and cannot share bandwidth with the built-in iSight camera.  I've read the many posts about moving files from the Quicktime folder to disable the iSight, but I've read that this action also disables ANY USB webcams from functiong.  Please help.

Thanks for the reply, but I already contacted the developer.  That's how I found out I couldn't have more than one webcam per high speed bus.  Thanks anyway.
Then perhaps some other software app that would not need iSight to be disabled would better serve your need?
For example, have you considered http://www.bensoftware.com/securityspy/ ?

  • My Messages app on my Mac has two of the same Apple ID, and I can't remove one of them without disabling iCloud?

Hello everyone. As my title states, I am having trouble with my Messages application on my MacBook Pro (mid 2012).
When I go to Messages and click Messages and then Preferences at the top, it shows I have to Yahoo! email accounts associated with my Mac (note that these are the same email addresses). For the first one, the description is my actual email adress ([email protected]). For the sedond one, the descrption is 'Yahoo!'. I can't disable one without disabling the other, and I don't know which one to use with Yahoo! Messenger.
Thanks for reading, any help is appreciated.

Obvious question, but have you got 'Find My iPhone' set on both devices?  Settings>iCloud>Find My iPhone.

  • Disable iSight camera and use external USA webcam

We have a macbook and use a large monitor for managing brochures etc. I would like to mount an external USB webcam on the monitor and use it with Skype. However, whenever I open Skype it turns on the iSight camera (which is facing a wall). Is there any way to have the external webcam be the active camera and disable the iSight camera?
    Thanks

I no longer use Skype, so I cannot test Skype's claims, but http://www.skype.com/go/help should best be able to help you use their product with your system.
I found this page http://www.skype.com/help/guides/skypeformac/skypefeatures/video.html that seems to address your specific question. The picture on that page shows that you should be able to select among connected cameras from the "Camera:" choices bar in Skype > Preferences > Video:
Of course, if you have only one compatible camera connected, only the one choice will show.
Use the latest version of Skype that is compatible with your system. If camera selection works as explained in the Skype Help page, there should be no need to "disable the iSight camera."

  • Clean way to disable integrated webcam, but not USB webcam?

In an old (and now closed) thread, two solutions for disabling webcams were discussed:
    1. unload the matching module
    2. remove permissions of /dev/video0
The first has the disadvantage of disabling all webcams (not just the internal one), the second one has the disadvantage of being called "hacky" and - this is why I'm starting this new thread - isn't permanent as I now discovered.
So has anyone an idea how to disable the internal webcam permanently without disabling ones attached by USB?
    (No, I don't want to use a hammer... ;-) )
    PS:
Sorry for the previous "necrobumping"; I thought it was appropriate because of the rule "If you have a version-agnostic or corresponding solution, necrobumping can be appropriate."

can't you disable it in the bios?

  • Disable built-in iSight or otherwise enable External Webcam

    Hi All,
I'm trying to take pics directly onto a MacBook. Don't need anything fancy, so PhotoBooth would suffice, but I need more control over where the camera is pointing than lifting and trying to aim a laptop. We have a Logitech 9000 but we can't get photobooth to use it. We tried tying up the built-in iSight with another app: this just causes photobooth to open with a blank black screen. We tried an applescript to disable the internal iSight (script "Intel Mac iSight Disabler" from [email protected]): this caused photobooth to launch with an error "No Camera" icon.
Anyone know either a way to disable the built-in isight and have an external webcam work OR an app that does basically what Photobooth does but with the ability to choose the camera?
    Thanks,
    Jeff

    Hello Jeff.
    (1) Re-enable your built-in iSight. The script you mention disables ALL USB webcams when any are disabled.
To use a different (must be compatible with your Mac) camera, occupy your built-in iSight in another app that lets you select the camera BEFORE you launch Photo Booth. Then, when you launch Photo Booth, it will automatically connect the webcam that is not already in use. For more details, scroll down and take a look at (3) in this link:
      http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=11033260&#11033260
It deals with built-in iSight and the iSight in an LED Display, but the idea is the same.
    (2) For more info on alternative webcams, take a look at this use Tip:
      http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2018211
Depending on the exact model of your Logitech, macam drivers apparently may allow it to work with your Mac. More info at the macam site:
      http://webcam-osx.sourceforge.net/cameras/index.php
Depending on how much budget you have and whether you have trouble making your Logitech work, you may find buying a new "UVC" webcam to be a simpler solution for a second webcam.

  • Is there a way to disable the Facetime camera and use an external USB webcam for browser based webchat?

Is it possible to disable the Facetime camera and use an external webcam as a default? So that when you access browser based applications that require a webcam it doesnt default to the Facetime camera but uses the USB webcam instead?
    Cheers.

    (1) You don't need to "disable" anything to select among cameras connected to your Mac.
For all cameras you access via browser based applications (cameras connect via Flash browser plugins), control-click on an open video window in your browser page and adjust the camera settings to select between a connected USB and Firewire video camera.  Specific instructions are here:
       http://www.macromedia.com/support/documentation/en/flashplayer/help/help04.html
If you don't see a choices of cameras in the Flash settings, your Mac is only recognizing one camera.  Verify that your external cam is Mac-compatible and properly connected.
Your choice is stored in preferences so the same camera will activate on the next browser page until you change it.
    (2) BTW, a current (Feb 2013) discussion of how to select among connected Mac cameras for a few more apps is available here:  http://discussions.apple.com/message/21158673#21158673

  • How to disable iSight?

I have recently discovered that my sister has been using the computer inappropriately (she's 15). Is there any way to completely disable the iSight camera from all chat applications? There doesn't seem to be such an option in System Preferences. Any help is highly appreciated as this is a fairly serious matter...

Scripts like this one can easily disable and enable iSight.
      http://techslaves.org/index.php?page=62
However, be aware that the script simultaneously disables ALL USB webcams when active.
Moreover, enabling is just as easy as disabling, so disabling iSight is not a complete solution for your concern.
*I completely agree with the advice you have already been offered*. Administrator access is required to circumvent OS X's security features, so control it carefully. In addition to managing iSight use, you will also want to consider other functions that can permit activity that you might consider inappropriate, dangerous, or worse. In addition to inappropriate camera use, you should be concerned about controlling specific website access and the ability to send and receive email, instant messaging, and to access file sharing websites that can be used to transfer images, video, and other information.
The only way to really assure that a child is not using any computer inappropriately is to configure it with all available safeguards and then to carefully control and monitor all the child's computer time.

  • Can I disable isight?

    hello
I work at a college and am having trouble with students using the isight camera on internet chat sites. I have run a iSight Disabler AppleScript 2.0 which disables the isight fine on over half our intel imacs, the only problem is that on the imacs which have final cut pro version 5 on it, it will then not open the FCP software at all - it comes up with an error.
Can anyone please help me?!?!? Is there anything else i can use to disable the isight without it affecting final cut pro??
Putting tape across the camera will not work either as the students will just pick it off.
Any help or advice would be very much appreciated!!!!
    Thanks

    Welcome to Apple Discussions, misticgirl
I do not use FCP, but I know that iSight Disabler AppleScript 2.0 is for iNtel Macs. Do your problem iMacs have iNtel or PPC processors?
If they are iNtel iMacs, have you restarted FCP after running the Script? I found this Screenshot (on the techslaves.org info page.) The dialog box says: "You need to restart applications which use the iSight driver after applying these settings." My interpretation is that "applying these settings" means clicking the "Enable iSight" or "Disable iSight" button.
I can find no FAQ, other technical support, or contact info in the techslaves.org pages. However, the techslaves.org info page warns that iSight Disabler AppleScript 2.0 has been tested only on OS X 10.4.8 and only on MacBook. There is no mention of any testing with FPC. You may want to ask about that at techslaves.org's "Talk" or "Suggestions" forum.
If you get no help here, I suggest you pose your question in the Final Cut Pro Forum. You may get some suggestions there.

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
You could simply set each device to only use a single telephone number (settings > messages > send & receive, but this isn't really an ideal solution since the other person can always change their settings and see your messages and send messages that appear as if they are from you. There is only one real solution and that's to have your own accounts.

  • Deleting Datas from a table without disabling constraints.

    Hi,
I am working in Oracle9i and solaris 5.8. In that i want to delete half of the datas in a table . the table contains one lakh rows but i need to delete only 50 thousand rows. But the table is constraints enabled. Please send me some queries how to delete the datas withput disabling the constraints.

What type of constraint do you have ?
In case of not null, unique, primary key constraint you can delete the rows without disabling the constraints.
In case of referential integrity constraint you can also delete the rows without disable the constraints but you have to specify on delete cascade constraints clause. By doing so, Oracle will delete the rows in the child table as well.

You may have to do this several times.
Saw this solution on another post about an iPad in a school environment. Might work on your iPad so you won't lose everything.

‘iPad is disabled’ fix without resetting using iTunes
Today I met my match with an iPad that had a passcode entered too many times, resulting in it displaying the message ‘iPad is disabled – Connect to iTunes’. This was a student iPad and since they use Notability for most of their work there was a chance that her files were not all backed up to the cloud. I really wanted to just re-activate the iPad instead of totally resetting it back to our default image.
I reached out to my PLN on Twitter and had some help from a few people through retweets and a couple of clarification tweets. I love that so many are willing to help out so quickly. Through this I also learned that I look like Lt. Riker from Star Trek (thanks @FillineMachine).
Through some trial and error (and a little sheer luck), I was able to reactivate the iPad without loosing any data. Note, this will only work on the computer it last synced with. Here’s how:
    1. Configurator is useless in reactivating a locked iPad. You will only be able to completely reformat the iPad using Configurator. If that’s ok with you, go for it – otherwise don’t waste your time trying to figure it out.
    2. Open iTunes with the iPad disconnected.
    3. Connect the iPad to the computer and wait for it to show up in the devices section in iTunes.
    4. Click on the iPad name when it appears and you will be given the option to restore a backup or setup as a new iPad (since it is locked).
    5. Click ‘Setup as new iPad’ and then click restore.
    6. The iPad will start backing up before it does the full restore and sync. CANCEL THE BACKUP IMMEDIATELY. You do this by clicking the small x in the status window in iTunes.
    7. When the backup cancels, it immediately starts syncing – cancel this as well using the same small x in the iTunes status window.
    8. The first stage in the restore process unlocks the iPad, you are basically just canceling out the restore process as soon as it reactivates the iPad.
If done correctly, you will experience no data loss and the result will be a reactivated iPad. I have now tried this with about 5 iPads that were locked identically by students and each time it worked like a charm.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Try it and good luck. You have nothing more to lose if it doesn't work for you.
     Cheers, Tom
