Disable keyboard eject button?

For goodness' sake, this thing drives me crazy. I sometimes leave CDs in my drive, just cause I don't feel like/remember to take them out. Then, when I least expect it, I accidentally bump the eject button, either in passing, or by overshooting the "backspace" delete button (I have long fingers). All of a sudden, I hear a whirring, and have to lift my laptop off my lap so that the imminently ejecting disc doesn't bind against my pants during its premature departure. Really disrupts my train of thought/workflow (I'm a coder), since it doesn't happen often enough to become accustomed to it.
I just want to turn this button off, or (preferably) make it so that it works, but I have to hold it down for a few seconds. Please? Anyone have any ideas? Thanks.

some of us would be happy to have a CD eject!!
Fair enough.

  • Disable the Eject button

I'm a teacher with 27 eMac's and I'd like to know if there is an application or another way to disable my students from opening - closing - opening - closing the cd tray everyday. They have no need for it, as I use only flash drives.
    Thanks for the help.

A thought (not tested) - can you use the keyboard shortcuts control panel to assign the eject button to some other action? Would that override the default behaviour?

  • Keyboard eject button in Windows

Just a curiousity - nothing big.
In OSX, I can use the eject button on the keyboard to both eject and re-insert the CD tray. In Windows, I can only use it to eject, but then have to manually push the tray back in. Any way to fix this? I just don't like pushing drives back in if I don't have to - I guess I figure me forcing them in is harder on them - I don't know.
    Any help is appreciated...

It really depends on what you're trying to do. The performance of Parallels can vary from the blindingly fast for things like Microsoft Office etc to horrid for things like 3D games.
For processor activities parallels does have direct hardware access through Intel's VT-x technology. Having said that, it doesn't have direct access to other hardware such as the graphics processor and network adapters so there is a layer of "emulation" (for the lack of a better work) in the middle there.
There are some games that will work respectably as long as they don't require GPU processing. If you have the games why don't you download a copy of Parallels, get yourself a trail key and just have a play with it.

  • Aluminum keyboard eject button does not work on Windows XP

I'm wondering if anyone else has the same issue:
the eject disk button on my new aluminum keyboard does not work in Windows XP (Boot Camp).
As I have a Mac Pro, there is no way of manually opening and closing the tray-loading Superdrive.
I can open the drive if I right-click "My Computer>DVD drive>Eject" but there is no way of closing it back. I am obviously not a Windows XP expert, are there ways of mapping the eject function to any key?

Actually, how does Software Update figure out what apps you have available for update?
I always thought that Software Update looks at your /Library/Receipts to check what Apple pkgs you have for update, so I assumed that any Apple-related Pkg would be updated. I may be totally wrong on this, correct me if that is so...but thanks for the info.

  • How do I use the restart keyboard combination on my MacBook Air without eject button?

  • [SOLVED] Disable optical drive eject button

My little 2-years-old brother loves to play with eject button on my optical drive. I want to find the most simple way to disable it temporary and I want it to be software, i.e. physically blocking the button isn't good. Any software tool for that?
    Thank you for attention, Artyom.

Debian has setcd which does what you are looking for. Here is the description:
This program allows you to control the behaviour of your Linux cdrom player.
You can control: auto close, auto eject, medium type checking and tray/caddy locking. You can get information on the volume name of CD-ROMs and other data, and you can set the speed of your drive and choose a disc from a jukebox.
The source of this package may be an example for cdrom player program developers that wish to exploit the features of the linux cdrom interface.
Unfortunately, there is no Arch package of it. If no one else beats me to it, I can package it later today

  • Eject button on the keyboard

Is there any way that I can get the eject button on keyboard to work again?
    Thanks in advance,
    AP

With the 10.4.10 update Apple introduced a half-second delay in the key to prevent accidental ejection. They did the same with the Caps Lock key on the aluminum keyboards though that may not work on earlier systems.

  • Keyboard shutdown command without eject button?

    Hi all,
Just upgraded from a late 2008 MBP to a 2011 MacBook Air i7, and so far I'm loving it. One thing I miss from my old computer, though, is the keyboard shortcut to shutdown (Command-Option-Control-Eject). Is there a different shortcut to shutdown the Air without the eject button?
    Thanks.

Nah... This one ([FN]+[CTRL]+[OPT]+[CMD]+[PWR]) works perfectly. I always prefer to do things as quickly as possible, i.e. by seeing as few dialogue boxes as can possibly be. On any Mac other than the MBA, I could just have used [CTRL]+[OPT]+[CMD]+[EJECT] for this purpose, but with the eject key not implemented on an MBA, that would be something of an impossibiity... This new shortcut, however, has solved this problem... It's just one additional key, and it's just next to the ones that need to be pressed for the original shortcut as well...

Works for me every time without failure.
It's not a matter of failure, it's the idea of training people to associate the Trash with unmounting a volume. The Trash is a mechanism for the permanent deletion of your data, and designed to appear as such. Apple haters used to laugh at this..."Eject by dragging to the Trash? And you say the Mac is intuitive? Ha ha ha..." And they were right. It's better to teach ways that actually make more sense.
The great thing about all the newer ways is that they are easily discoverable, you don't have to remember or figure out that you have to virtually trash your disk. A new user would naturally expect to find an Eject command or button, and there they are in plain sight.

I always find a ton of mounted installers left behind by users who install stuff on their systems.  I don't understand why Apple cannot make an automated process to unmount the installer once it's done.  Just seems stupid to me I guess.  I've seen that mounted installer confuse people into clicking on it each and every time they want to start the app because they don't understand that once it's installed, that installer should be ejected because they're done with it.
I agree about the installer volume behavior...and Apple made it worse in Mountain Lion by putting the volumes on the bottom of the Finder sidebar, which is often out of view. Incidentally, drag-to-trash does not seem to work with volumes in the sidebar, but the other Eject methods do.
The "installer problem" is another reason I love the other methods much more than dragging to the trash. To eject multiple volumes by selecting them and pressing Command-E is much faster than the time taken to gather them up with the mouse and drag all of them to a specific spatial target.

  • Qosmio X500 - How to disable beep and buttons?

I have the x500 series and want to change a few things
    Disable the following;
1^st^. Annoying beep when you press one of the shortcut buttons on the left (e.g. volume).
2^nd^. Displayed shortcut buttons (e.g. mouse disable).
    - When playing a game and press one of the shortcut buttons (e.g. mute), it minimises the game and displays an annoying icon (mute).
3^rd^. Shortcut buttons on the left of keyboard.
    - They are good buttons, when I'm not using them, they are very sensitive and accidently press them.

    Hello
The beep sound of illumination buttons you can disable in BIOS (BIOS setup > Advanced > System Configuration). There is an option called Beep Sound.
Generally speaking you can also disable all illumination buttons in BIOS, after this you will not see such shortcut buttons anymore but only disabling the icons only is not possible.

  • Eject Button Inactivated Disc Won't Eject

I just bought my macbook pro new and suddenly (since I updated to 10.6.6, coincidence?) my eject button will not work, nor does it made any effort to eject the disc that I put inside. I've tried pushing eject (no symbol or noise), I've tried using terminal to eject, I've tried restarting it at pushing commandoption+of, I've tried using a credit card. Problem is two fold... my disc is stuck in there (and I'm scared to use a paperclip) and the eject button does not work. The computer also does not show a disc is inserted so I can eject it using the computer programs or utilities.
    Suggestions?

Five ways to eject a stuck CD or DVD from the optical drive
Ejecting the stuck disc can usually be done in one of the following ways:
    1. Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the left mouse button until the disc ejects.
    2. Press the Eject button on your keyboard.
    3. Click on the Eject button in the menubar.
    4. Press COMMAND-E.
    5. If none of the above work try this:
Open the Terminal application in your Utilities folder. At the prompt enter or paste the following:
    /usr/bin/drutil eject.
If this fails then try this:
Boot the computer into single-user mode. At the prompt enter the same command as used above. To restart the computer enter "reboot" at the prompt without quotes.
I would consider repairing your hard drive and permissions. If this doesn't help then you will need to reinstall OS X:
Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
    1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer. Proceed with reinstalling OS X. Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files. After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.

  • Mac Pro Crashes when I press Eject button!?

I've recently upgraded from Leopard to Snow Leopard. This has brought me more problems than solutions! Chief among them is that the Eject button on my keyboard sometimes causes my Mac to quit all applications (including the Finder) thereby dumping all unsaved files. This problem is not exclusively caused by the eject button as it also happened once when I tried to Force Quit Safari which had froze. The "crash" does not appear to be a full crash since the Mac doesn't entirely restart but the screen goes blue, all menus disappear, then after a few seconds the Finder relaunches but all other programmes have quit and all unsaved changes lost. This is clearly unsatisfactory and frankly an intolerable risk given the work I can lose if this happens. I'm not sure of the cause but suspect it might be linked to the Flash Player in Safari which has been behaving very oddly since upgrading. Safari frequently freezes due to the Flash player going haywire. I've uninstalled and reinstalled the Flash Player several times but it keeps messing up. That may be a separate problem but it's the only lead I have at the moment...
Can anybody help me restore some stability to my Mac??
I had none of these issues under Leopard...
I'm on a Mac Pro Quad Core 2.8 GHz
