Disable left Apple key

Hi,
Is there a trick to disable the left Apple key? Is there something like xmodmap for applications outside X11?
Thanks.

Sorry, I don't know the answer to this — except ripping the cap off the key and sticking a wad of chewing gum on in its place!
But I am curious as to WHY you'd want to do this. The convenience of having two Cmd keys is great—for example, Cmd-Q is best typed with the right Cmd key, whereas Cmd-P is easier to get with the left.
Cheers!

  • Left shift key of my new macbook pro retina 13 is always pressed.

My 1 month old macbook pro retina 13 inch model has a problem now. Left shift key is always pressed which results in booting to safe mode.
Currently i have overcome the issue by pressing "option" while booting and used keyremap software to disable "left shift key". Since this a temporary solution, I would like to know what would have caused the shift key to behave like this. If the key not working would have been better, but it is always in pressed state.
Please let me know what I can do to rectify this. If keyboard to be replaced, approximately how much it will cost for the same? I am looking for a positive response....
    Regards,
    Jibin

Hi BobRz, you are probably talking about the screen display which normaly dims during low light conditions, and that's true. but my concern is the keyboard brightness, it suppose to increase in low light conditions, but instead it dims to the point that i can no longer see the letters on the keyboard. I have viewed a youtube video about the normal adustment function, and mine is doing the opposite

  • My left shift key on Macbook Pro Retina (15") is behaving like the F11 key (show/hide open windows).  The key behaves the same for the laptop keyboard and for an external Apple keyboard?  This just started in last week after 6 months of use

My left shift key on Macbook Pro Retina (15") is behaving like the F11 key (show/hide open windows).
The left shift key behaves the same on the laptop keyboard and on an external Apple keyboard.
This just started in last week after 6 months of use.  The right shift key and other keys on the keyboard all appear to work correctly.
    Suggestions greatly appreciated.

I have a solution to this issue now after a discussion with Apple Support.  Some where in the last few weeks, there was a change in the key that would do a Show Desktop under the Mission Control settings in the System Preferences.  Even though the key sequence that was shown for the Show Desktop setting did not include the Left SHift key, by changing this first to having no key sequence and applying that and then changing it back to the F11 key, the Left SHift key issue that I was having has cleared up.
A second issue that was uncovered was that the SSD had some issues (uncovered when I ran Disk Utility using the Repair Disk key).  I had to restart and use the Disk Utility through the Command R sequence to get to the stand alone Disk Utility.  The SSD appears to be running better as a result as well.
Hope that this is of use to someone else in the future.

  • Disabling Apple key in a JTable

I have a JTable on Windows i can use CNTL-C,CNTl-V to copy and paste between cells.
I then migrated it to OSX where the default is to use AppleCommand-C and AppleCommand-V instead. The problem is that it doesnt work because unlike pressing CNTL pressing AppleCommand on its own starts editing the cell so popupmenu command doesnt run.
For another reason on windows i had sucessfully disabled use of the F2 key to edit cells so tried a similar method to diisable the command key as follows.
    table.getInputMap(JComponent.WHEN_ANCESTOR_OF_FOCUSED_COMPONENT).put(KeyStroke.getKeyStroke(Toolkit.getDefaultToolkit().getMenuShortcutKeyMask(), 0), "none");
            table.getInputMap(JComponent.WHEN_FOCUSED).put(KeyStroke.getKeyStroke(Toolkit.getDefaultToolkit().getMenuShortcutKeyMask(), 0), "none");
table.getInputMap(JComponent.WHEN_IN_FOCUSED_WINDOW).put(KeyStroke.getKeyStroke(Toolkit.getDefaultToolkit().getMenuShortcutKeyMask(), 0), "none");to disable the command key but it has no effect.
    Any ideas , please ?

FYI I posted this on the Apple Java Mailing list and two slightly different but essentially the same solutions were provided. I went with the one implemeneted in Quaqua.

  • Disable Play/ Pause Keys on Apple Keyboards in Aperture

Hi, I'm looking for a way to make Aperture not start a slideshow using the play/ pause key on the Apple keyboards.
It's really annoying when you want to play/pause song in iTunes - Aperture stars slideshow.
Is there some solution to disable Aperture media keys?

    Tricky One oO
The only way I can use the play/pause key is when using Ecoute to listen to the iTunes library. And only by pressing altshiftF8...
In Ecoute you can define your own shortcuts which don't interfere with iTunes.
    Try:
    ctrlcmdspace -> play/pause
    ctrlcmdleft -> previous track
    ctrlcmdright -> next track

  • TS1381 Apple keyboard weirdness...no capital 'E' via left Shift key...?

Suddenly, today, I cannot type a capital 'e' using the left SHIFT key. Using the left SHIFT key can create capitals of all other letters... and the right SHIFT key and CAPS LOCK keys can product capital 'e's with no problem... but the combination of the left SHIFT key and the 'e' does nothing... no lower case 'e'... nothing. Restart did nada. I'm running a USB Apple ketboard with number pad and OSX 10.7.5.
    Any ideas?

Sadly this happens to me with the same key and like you the situation can be mitigated with the use of the caps lock too.

  • When I disable my left windows key for gameing using Microsoft keyboard and mouse software, I can no longer type in firefox. How can i fix this?

Microsoft Keyboard and Mouse Software that you install with Microsoft keyboard and mice, (latest version) allows you to disable your windows key so that you don't accidentally hit it when gaming. When I take advantage of this feature, I can no longer type in Firefox. Typing in Firefox is completely disabled. Other browsers, windows, applications work, but not Firefox. What is it about the windows key that firefox needs for typing. Strange problem, but annoying because I have to use a different browser while game. Certainly not a deal breaker, but kinda strange.

  • Left shift key remapped into alt key

    Hi Everybody
The left shift key of my Macbook air started to work exactly like the alt key, like it was remapped.
    (the alt key works normally)
The solution of the problem might be simple but I couldn't find any way to change the behaviour in Maverick.
    Can anyone help?
    Thanks

    Try a restart.
Do a backup, using either Time Machine or a cloning program, to ensure files/data can be recovered. Two backups are better than one.
Try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. If Back-to-My Mac is selected in System Preferences, the Guest account will not work. The intent is to see if it is specific to one account or a system wide problem. This account can be deleted later.
Isolating an issue by using another user account
If the problem is still there, try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account.  Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up after waiting 10 seconds. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don't do them all at once.

  • My Left Command key shows the desktop and can't be used for other functions

My Left Command key shows the desktop when pressed in.
So if I try and copy (command + C) I end up staring at the desktop....This only happens with the left key. When checking System Preferences, none of the settings in keyboard preferences seems to be relevant. I have reset the keyboard setting to default, but it makes no difference. Also this only happens with my user, when changing user on same laptop I get the normal behaviour for the Left command key

  • Is there a way to swap the Fn key and left Ctrl key

Is there a way to swap the functions of Fn key and left Ctrl key on the keyboard. I'm used to other keyboards where the keys are switched and I keep pressing Fn when I want to press Ctrl.  I figure I'll get used to it eventually, but when I use the laptop in a docking station with a regular keyboard the control key is in one spot and undocked with the Lenovo keyboard the function key is there instead, which makes it hard to get used to.
If not is there a way to disable the Fn + Space bar function that changes the screen resolution. The programs I use use control + space heavily and my screen resolution keeps changing when I don't want it to.
It's a small thing I know, but very maddening.

Thanks, I took the survey. It's interesting the questions on there were asking about location of keys like page up and page down. I find the position of those keys are not that important to me because I don't use them that much and don't seem to mind looking at the keyboard to find them. Also they are almost always in different spots depending on whether you are on a desktop or laptop keyboard so I guess I'm used to unconsciously switching depending on which keyboard I'm on.
But the left control key is one of the most heavily used, at least by developers like me (control+c to copy, control+v to paste, and control+space for code assist, shift + control + f to format code, shift + control + r to find resources, etc...). I have to hit that Ctrl button 1000 times a day. And the key is in the bottom far left corner on every keyboard (desk top and laptop) I've ever seen until now. Having to remember to look down at the keyboard to find the key is proving difficult and I think is actually hurting my productivity. Especially control+space (when you are expecting a popup to automatically complete the line of code you're working on and instead the screen blinks, resizes and your whole editor loses focus it really breaks your flow of thought, so thanks a million for helping me turn off the silly screen zoom feature).
Hopefully I'll get used to it like with the other keys like page up and page down although I've had the laptop for two weeks and it's proving difficult. If I had know that Thinkpads have this layout and how maddening it would be to get used to it I probably wouldn't have bought it, even though everything else about it is great. It's amazing how such a small thing can become such an irritant.
Well thanks again, and if anybody from Lenovo engineering is reading this post, my vote is for some bios setting on the T61P that swaps the functions of Fn and Left control key. It would save me a lot of grief anyway.

  • 3 letters + left shift key not working - 2 of them + right shift key working

    Hi all,
as in subject, I have just bought a laptop g50-45, italian keyboard.
    I encountered this problem:
"LEFT shift key" + "e" or "d" or "c" combinations do not work. Nothing happens.
"RIGHT shift key" + "e" or "d" work properly
"RIGHT shift key" + "c" do not work. Nothing happens
CAPS key + "e" or "d" or "c" work properly.
I noticed this issue before making any updates of  windows 8.1
I tried making an update of the bios and later updating windows but the problem is still there.
I check with an external keyboard and everything work correctly
I don't think it could be a mechanical problem because "e", "d" and "c" keys alone work properly, so it seems more a software side problem.
    Thank you for your help.

thanks, i thought there some quick procedure to do before heading to apple store. i was just wondering, it was working for a while, and then suddenly like that. i have macbook 10.6.8 software. intel core 2 duo. less than a year old, if i'm not mistaken.

  • Left arrow key -- probably a stupid question.

In some applications my left arrow key doesn't work. I've noticed it most in Word for mac, but I know it has happened elsewere, too. And in safari the left arrow key tabs often functions like tab. I'm new to Mac (and just getting used to fn + delete to delete forward). Is this another key combination thing I'm missing? I've discovered using Word that fn + <-- is "home," and that works just fine.
    Thanks!

I have this exact same problem. Has anyone found a fix. I called Apple Care and they said it was not a hardware problem, as this left arrow key problem only happens in Word. They also could not find a fix to the problem and, of course, referred me to Microsoft. I had already spoken with Microsoft and they, of course, referred me to Apple. I am desperately trying to a fix, as I use Word to write upwards of 100 page reports and not being able to use the left arrow key is a nightmare.
    Please someone help.

  • Need help in reassigning 'fn' key to be a command [apple] key

    Hi everyone,
I have a Japanese keyboard-ed Powerbook 12". I would like to reassign the fn key to function as a command/apple key, primarily for web browsing. I tried adding a keyboard shortcut just for Safari but it wouldn't work and I am ont sure what I am doing wrong.
The Japanese keyboards only have one command/apple key (on the left side), and it would be nice to have one on the right side instead (close to the arrow keys).
FYI, the keyboard layout on the right side is currently:
[kana-switch to JP key] [fn] [enter] [arrow keys]
    Thanks for any help!!

    Hi Nate --
I'm not certain (in fact, the more I look at it I kind of doubt it), but maybe DoubleCommand might help you do what you want, or at least something approximating that.
I'll keep looking, but it's the best I can come up with right now.

  • Left SHIFT key always truncated with OPTION key

Every time I press down the left shift key the option key also gets activated. For instance, leftshifta=Å, leftshiftq=Œ and so forth. I noticed that when I went through the initial setup and confirmed with the keyboard viewer. How can I get this fixed without taking the computer back?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions
You can't fix this yourself you'll have to take it back to Apple and have them replace the keyboard.

  • Left shift key inserts ± (plus/minus symbol)

When I try to use the left shift key and hold it down for more than a half-second or so it will insert the ± symbol. Not being the speediest of typists, this has rendered the key useless (besides being a shortcut for that symbol, of course). This occurs in all profiles.
I am using a Macally ICEKey keyboard with the latest drivers. The behavior occurs when I set the keyboard to the "unknown generic keyboard" option, as well. I tried uninstalling the drivers and trashing the com.apple.keyboardtype.plist file, but the problem continued to occur after it went through the generic keyboard setup on reboot. I should also mention that the keyboard worked fine for a few months before this problem arose.
The only other USB keyboard I have is a generic Dell keyboard (that does work with a Windows box), but when I plugged it in after removing the Macally it was not recognized by my Mac, even after reboot.
Besides trying another keyboard that is confirmed to work with Snow Leopard, are there any settings I should change (the language and character settings are default English with an ANSI keyboard layout) or other diagnostics I could try?
    Thanks,
    Sam

I have a Macally keyboard (NetKey) and I know that Macally hasn't issued drivers or updates for Intel Macs for some time; I checked on their download page for your model and the latest driver is for "10.4 or above" (which means it's been there for quite a while), which may also mean that it may or may not work with Snow Leopard. I know the driver for mine does not work on SL and I've lost all the cool functions on it (media keys, etc), but I still like the keyboard. My iMac also recognizes the keyboard immediately without any drivers installed.
As for your question, have you looked in the Keyboard pane of System Preferences to see if for some reason that key has been assigned a special function?
And, as far as I know, just about any keyboard - especially USB - should work with SL as long as you don't plan to install any drivers that happen to be for Windows only for any special function keys or features. I don't know why the Dell wouldn't be recognized unless it is made to function only after some software (driver) install (which wouldn't be compatible with SL).
