Disable Lion video driver, without Safe Mode?

We have an old 2.0 ghz 17" Intel iMac with Lion installed, which is used exclusively for managing iPads. The iMac has no other purpose in life, and is only turned on to download iPad software updates and run Apple Configurator.
This summer the iMac suddenly stopped working. It shows a random broken image when it boots and the system eventually freezes with a forever-spinning cursor. Apparently this is due to the soldered-in 3D graphics accelerator developing a problem, and which seems endemic to this model of Intel iMac.
However, I discovered that Recovery mode works fine...
And I can reinstall Lion...
But after two attempts to reinstall Lion, that doesn't help at all.
I then discovered that Safe Mode also works fine, and then that Safe Mode allows me to boot a backup of the previous configuration before reinstalling Lion. I am in fact typing this message using Safe Mode on the iMac.
So the iMac works okay in Safe Mode, and I see it is possible to permanently enable Safe Mode...
sudo nvram boot-args="-x"
However safe mode tends to degrade lots of other system capabilities also, such as no sound, plug-in USB flash drives don't work, etc.
Is there a way to just disable the video acceleration driver alone, but load everything else normally?

I found the solution I was looking for.
The iMac works fine (with safe mode disabled), if I just disable the ATI Radeon X1000 video driver.
This can be done by either deleting this file or moving it to another folder:
/System/Library/Extensions/ATIRadeonX1000.kext

    Great clue Lukas...
One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for problem in Safe Mode...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
    Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport, or some USB or Firewire device, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.
Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...

  • Is there a way to prevent add-ons from being disabled? (i.e. prevent safe-mode, etc.)

If you have a content blocker installed, it can be disabled by starting firefox in safe mode or by disabling it in the add-ons screen. Any way to prevent this?

No, you can't prevent starting Firefox in [[Safe mode]] to disable extensions.
You will have to use outside Firefox if you want to block content.

I contacted Apple Support, which cannot do anything for me...
I have already tried to reinstall completely (from scratch) lion AND snow leopard.
I have also tried to repair the permissions after the installation.
The problem occurs generally in the morning, but now I'm facing it almost every time I boot.
Reboot is working fine for now.
Btw, I checked on the apple support site and I found an article saying that it might be due to some hard drives issues.
I start thinking that we might have a problem with the hard drive (so as with the 1To Imac).
To the other people having this issue:
What mac do you have ?
What is the size of the hd ?
    Mine:

  • My computer will only boot off it's drive in safe mode

    Short Story...
My computer will only boot in safe mode and in normal mode displays grey apple that turns into a grey cross. Surface scan in techtool pro 4.5.1 passed
Long Story... (all the issues I've had as they are all back to back and most likely cause by what sloved the previous one).
When i first got my macbook i already had a 500gb hdd in my macmini running 10.6 (or 10.6.1 I forget) and as soon as a had the macbook running off this drive it would give me one error for each and every movie file that was visible (in an open folder or on the desktop) saying quick look helper had unexpectedly quit. I tried everything and for some reason ended up changing all the permissions on the computer which royally screwed it up. anyway after repairing permissions in disk utility the error messages stopped but shortly after start up it was giving me a couple of dozen error messages saying something about .kext's (if requested i can supply full text of this error message) so i tried reinstalling the OS and since in 10.6 there is no archive and install (without messing around in terminal) i just ran the snow leopard disc which brought me back to 10.6 then I upgraded to 10.6.2 and restarting a couple of times over a day or so. After a few restarts I found the computer wouldn't start (it chimed, loaded up the apple symbol and loading wheel and then after a few minutes replaced the apple symbol with a crossed circle) I tried running the snow leopard disc again and this time not upgrading but after about 3 restarts the same thing happened. now i can only start up in safe boot mode or off my backup drive which still displays a few dozen of the .kext errors at start up. Sorry about the length of this description I would appreciate absolutely any help or ideas.

I would try troubleshooting your problem [using the steps given by Apple here|http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1892].

  • Video Only in Safe mode.

The video will work, correctly, in safe mode only. Using latest nVidia drivers.
Boots fine till we hit the log on screen then monitor goes black with no signal.
Can boot to safe mode fine. Removed drivers, ran driver cleaner, rebooted to safe mode and ran driver cleaner again.
Booted to safe mode again to install driver package to same result in normal windows (blank screen)
Wondering if card may be faulty as the screen does not look quite right when booting using only windows native drivers. I can pull an identical card from rig in sig to test. Just looking for suggestions here.
    Thanks

hit "F8" after bios post, and choise "Enable VGA Mode". boot normally and setup correct refresh rates.
check dual view & TV out settings too.
I had tried that once and resolution was VERY low and only 4 colors. Just 2 options each to change and the slider and drop down menu would not except the change and or move. Windows tried to adjust on it's own and the screen had a greenish tint to it. Still looked better in safe mode and booting normally was OK except for low res and color.(Still greenish)
I'm gonna swap the card out tomorrow morning

We tried opening in Firefox Safe Mode and the same thing happens. The YouTube vids stream as normal in our other browsers. Using Mac OS 10.6.7.

Is Fixed! Someone suggested clearing the Firefox cache 9 (Preferences / Advanced / Network / Clear Now) and and after doing this now we can stream on the YouTube site as normal.

  • Why is there no 'safe mode' in my folder and how do i stop Firefox from unexpectedly crashing without it?

Firefox crashes anywhere from startup to shutdown and everywhere in between. Idling, surfing, downloading.. none of these appear specific to my crash. Crash data isn't yet in Canadian English, so i'm not much help there. Far as i can tell, it's apps or memory usage, but without 'safe mode' there is little i can do to get Firefox back to the great browser it once was.

  • Add specific hotkeys for vlc (disable video track without disabling audio track)?

There's no way to add hotkeys for [menu bar > Video > Video Track > Disable] under Preferences or Advanced.
When I use [SysPreferences > Keyboard > Keyboard Shortcuts > Application Shortcuts > '+'] to add a hotkey for "Disable", it applies to audio also [menu bar > Audio > Audio Track > Disable].
How do I disable the video track without going through the menu bar? Can I go into vlc.app and edit it? Or is there an app that will help? Or is there a way to specify which (menu bar>disable) I want to add hotkeys to, in application shortcuts?
I'm actually using 10.8 if that matters.

  • Mega 180 - Install Video Card or Install Video Driver

I just spent 6 hours at a customer's house trying to fix the Mega 180 I built for her.
As I stated in a previous thread, the machine was working fine and then she experienced the BLACK SCREEN OF DEATH.  This is when your machine POSTS, loads Windows and just before Windows starts, the monitor goes dead.  Windows still loads and if you remember where icons are on the desktop, you can click them and stuff happens.  The monitor just stops getting a signal.  However, if you hold down F8 during boot and chose VGA mode, you can use Windows in VGA mode.  The monitor being used is a Sony Multiscan200ES.
Once in Windows, if you look under device manager, you'll see a listing of Unknown and under that it lists nVidia GeForce4 MX Integrated CPU.
So, I've tried the following fixes:
    1) Uninstalled all chipset & viideo drivers, reboot, reinstall chipset drivers, reboot, reinstall video driver, reboot.  BLACK SCREEN OF DEATH.
    2) Uninstall video driver, reboot.  Windows starts under the generic driver.  I install the video driver, reboot, BLACK SCREEN OF DEATH.
    3)  Figuring there had to be an easier solution to this problem, I installed an ATI Radeon 8500 card that I had laying around (I know this card works) figuring that I'll just sidestep the whole video driver issue by not using the onboard video.  Things just aren't that easy because after I installed the card the machine won't even POST.  It turns on but nothing happens.  ARRRR!!!  I try reseating the card, nope - nothing.  I take the card out and use the onboard graphics to make sure everything is ok in BIOS.  I read that if the BIOS detects an AGP card it will automatically disable the onboard graphics but it doesn't seem like that's happening.  So I look around BIOS and there is no way to disable the onboard graphics.  I have it set to boot AGP first, etc. and nothing works.
I guess the last thing I can do is reformat the drive, reinstall windows, and reinstall everything else.  But I don't want to do this because the machine is all set up, been used for a while, and it takes so long to reinstall everything.
My question is this.  How can I either reinstall the video driver so it works or how can I install a video card so it works?  Ideas???

    Quote
I'm going to hunt over at nVidia's website to see if they have a cleaner utility (ATI does for its Radeon drivers - rids the system of every last trace).
nVidia don't need a cleaner utility cos their software is better written!
stab in the dark - the vga lead is connected to PRIMARY vga port?
go to add/remove programs and Remove "Nvidia Display Driver" in Safe mode
restart your computer and it should boot into VGA mode, and prompt with Found New Hardware. cancel this.
the nvidia software will leave the install stuff on your computer, usually in C:\NVIDIA. browse to here and find and run the setup.exe to reinstall the software.
if its been working before, then its probably not a memory issue - it might also be worth making sure the latest nforce drivers (3.13) are installed too.
oh and customers usually WON'T admit to messing around to stuff they shouldn't - in my experience anyway!!

  • IMac works fine in safe mode, extremely slow in normal mode

    Hey guys, I'm going nuts!
My mac got stuck on a white screen, I ended up reinstalling Snow Leopard - now when I boot in normal mode everything is extrememly slow - when I mouse over the corner of a window (close minimise etc) is stops and takes about 10 seconds to make the rollover affect (putting the "x" in the red circle). When I move the mouse over anything on the desktop, it stops working for about 10 seconds as well. The mouse moves around the screen fine, and after a lot of painful (and very patient) clicking, I can transfer files around fine - happens just as fast as it would normally, windows open as normal etc.
The most frustrating part is - everything works fine is safe mode! I'm typing this message on the mac now... I was thinking that I could transfer all of my data on to an external drive, but safe mode won't recognise them it took me about 10 minutes to select a folder and copy it to a hard drive in normal mode - I can't drag over a few items because of the mouse problem...
I have updated my software - can't open the app store for some reason (I want to upgrade to Lion as well). No idea what to do...

One of the primary difference between a safe boot and a normal boot is that all third party software is prevented from starting in the safe boot. So it sounds like something you installed on your Mac is causing the problems.
Are you running any kind of AV software?
If you are I would suggest that you start by unsintalling it. There are no virus on the Mac for the AV software to find any way so all it ever does is cause problems.

  • IMac G5 crashes during bootup (except safe mode)

Greetings! I shutdown my iMac G5 for the first time in about a month on Sunday. I started it up last night for the first time since then and I immediately noticed that I didn't get a startup chime - very odd. After displaying the gray screen for about 7 seconds I got the dark gray screen of text with the white text in the middle about holding down the power button for 6 seconds. I tried this a couple of times and got the same results, no startup chime and crashes very early in the boot process.
This morning I popped off the back and started it again with the button on the logic board (does this reset the SMU?) Same results. So I tried resetting the PRAM as everyone here recommends and this time I got the startup chime, it got a little farther in the boot process (spinning wheel this time) before I got the same dark gray screen of death. About ready to give up, I tried it in safe boot mode and it booted all the way up. I did it again in safe mode to make sure and it worked again. Finally I tried again without safe mode and it bombed again (at least with the startup chime).
So any ideas on what the culprit could be? I don't think I've installed any new software in the past month, and even if I did I thought it was crashing so early in the boot process that it couldn't have been user related. Could something else hardware-related be causing the problem? Any, any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks for reading.

Here is the Apple web page on what safe boot does. Maybe you could look around in the folders given and see if you can spot the bad file.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107392
Do not know how Mac OS determines what is an apple extension in the folder /System/Library/Extensions, but if you do an info command on the file, you will see what files are copyrighted by apple. Click on the file then do command-i.
It will not be easy to spot the bad file. What they did in the classic days was to create a second folder call extensions (disabled) and drag files between the two folders until they found the bad file. I'd look for files with a new date on the file but the files do not have to have a new date because they could have been copied with an old date. Moving files could leave you system not able to boot. You best know how to do this from the command line if you get into single user mode. You might want to verify that you can start up in single user mode before trying to copy files. Press command-s when powering on.
I'd make a backup of any folder you change. This way you could rename the folders to get back to your original folder. Single user mode commands:
    mv
    cd
    mkdir
    man mv
    man cd
    man mkdir
Perhaps you could boot up form the install cd and move the files around. Any change of target mode?
    Proceed with caution!

  • Mac Pro can only be booted into safe mode

    Hi All
This morning when I booted my Mac Pro 2009 running 10.6.8, it booted but with this error window on the desktop -
The System Extension "/System/LibraryExtensions/IOStorageFamily.kext" was installed improperly and cannot be used.
Please try reinstalling it, or contact the products vendor for an update.
How do I reinstall it ?
    How did this happen ?
Now I can only boot my main drive from Safe Mode by holding shift after the boot chime, it still shows the error above in a desktop window
    but it boots.
My machine all boots OK into Maountain Lion from another drive no problems.
How can I resovle this issue, my drive that contained a backup went bad the other and I am awaiting a new drive, and then this happens, always the way.

    Hi there Washac,
You may want to verify that the disc you are trying to boot from is the OS Installation disc and not the Additional Software disc. Try using the Startup Manager to boot from the install disc instead of launching the installer from the desktop in Mavericks. Keep the 10.6 install disc in the optical drive and follow the steps below.
Turn on, or restart, your Mac.
Immediately press and hold the Option key on a USB attached keyboard. After a few seconds, the Startup Manager should appear. The Startup Manager scans for available volumes.
Use the left and right arrow keys on the keyboard to select the volume you would like to use.
Press the Return key on your keyboard to start up the computer from the volume you selected.
via Startup Manager: How to select a startup volume
If the OS install disc is not booting properly, you have a couple of options. The first option is to reach out to an Apple Authorized Service Provider or schedule an appointment at an Apple Store, if there is one near you, and have them reinstall 10.6. If that is not possible for any particular reason, you can still order a replacement 10.6 Retail disc from the Apple Online Store. These discs are not model specific, and should boot on any computer that meets the system requirements for 10.6.

  • Again getting black screen after Exiting Safe Mode in Windows 8 as suggested by hp

I'm again getting black screen after entering safe mode after upgrade to Windows and exiting from safe mode but after exiting my laptop display was of 8.b but after some time it again went back to same black screen problem .I disabled Intel and amd hd 86graphics driver in safe mode.please help .

    Hi there ,
Thank you for visiting the HP Support Forums and Welcome! I have looked into the issue you are having with your display Turning Black after entering Safe Mode.  I found a document for you called Troubleshooting Black Screen Displays with No Error Messages During Startup or Boot. It would be very helpful for me to know what has been done already so that I can narrow down what troubleshooting would be best for you. You mentioned in your post "again". Is it an intermittent issue? Please follow these provided troubleshooting steps, re-post with the results of the steps in the document, and any other troubleshooting steps you had tried and the results. Have a great day!

That one does not seem to give any useful info at present.
Malware is one common cause of crashes, and that may produce variable crash reports, it is probably worth doing full scans with multiple tools/software to try to rule out the possibility of malware.

Besides trying in safe mode did you also try disabling all plugins whilst in safe mode. (If it crashes before then, are you able to create a new profile and try that ? ) Also if crashing before about:crashes may be entered have you seen http://kb.mozillazine.org/Breakpad#Location_of_crash_reports
Sorry I am not able to give a useful answer at the moment.
