Disable PAM

Hi All,
I need to disable PAM in Solaris,
In Solaris 9 I set parameter "PAMAuthenticationVIAKBD=NO"
in /etc/ssh/sshd_conf file
I could not find this file in Solaris 8, pls suggest how to disable PAM in Solaris 8
Thanks & Regds,
Gattu

Hi mAbrante,
Thanks for your info and help
I could find sshd_config file in solaris 8
In solaris 9 when i disabled PAM by setting "PAMAuthenticationViaKBDInt no" i found that "PasswordAuthentication yes" is not commented
But in solaris 8 "PasswordAuthentication yes" is commented
Do i need to uncomment the above when i disable PAM
Thanks again

Any way to disable Pam in Kde?

Thanks a ton for this tip. Finally my logs will not be polluted with junk. I agree with you that the troublesome entries should be commented by default. Just like this:
    #%PAM-1.0
    auth required pam_nologin.so
    auth required pam_permit.so
    account required pam_unix.so #service=system-auth
    password required pam_unix.so #service=system-auth
    session required pam_unix.so #service=system-auth
    session optional pam_console.so
    session required pam_limits.so
    EDIT:

  • Arch-XFCE: power management keeps kicking in

    Hi,
I use a fully updated Arch/XFCE, among others, to watch movies (on a large external TV connected via HDMI) using VLC.
I use the following startup script to disable pam, among others:
    #!/bin/bash
    xset -dpms; xset s off
    xrandr --newmode "1920x1080_50.00" 144.1667 1920 2048 2248 2576 1080 1083 1088 1120 -hsync +vsync
    xrandr --addmode HDMI-0 1920x1080_50.00
    xrandr --output HDMI-0 --mode 1920x1080_50.00
Till about 2 days ago I had no problem watching movies this way.
Ever since (as far as I remember after a full system update), while watching movies, every few minutes the movies suddenly stop, and automatically resume (after skipping some frames) after about 15-20 seconds.
From the following journal I suspect the problem is pam related although it's disabled by the startup script.
    Please advise!
    Thanks
    Michael Badt

I've also ran the following test yet I don't know to decipher it:
    # systemctl status shadow.service
    ● shadow.service - Verify integrity of password and group files
    Loaded: loaded (/usr/lib/systemd/system/shadow.service; static)

    Process: 259 ExecStart=/usr/bin/pwck -r (code=exited, status=0/SUCCESS)
    Main PID: 273 (code=exited, status=0/SUCCESS)

It seems fairly obvious that there is a disconnect between your GUI frontend and whatever Xfce uses on the backend to manipulate these settings.  However, I don't know if it is a permissions issue or something else.  dmesg isn't a boot log, it is an interface for kernel and module messages and is usually a good place for looking when something goes wrong.  There are other logs that are more specific in your /var/log directory.
Run dmesg --clear, then perform some of these actions and run dmesg again.  This will clear all of the boot messages and leave you with only the messages that occurred after you cleared it.

I also had the /dev/nvidiactl permissions error message.  Did the chmod/chown thing, but I'm also running PAM so I get the error back after rebooting.
I checked for the two permissions files they mentioned, but I don't seem to have them, although I do have an /etc/security/ directory, but none of the files in there have a <dri> section.
Anyone know what I need to change to fix this without disabling PAM?
If im not totaly wrong, consider that I had a few beers  , cant you just add your self to the video group?? I think that is what I did. Check your groups belonging with:
    groups
If you not have video, edit your /etc/group file

Same issue with my HD6670. I didn't notice until I installed Steam and it was unusable. Since you have a 7000 series card, try this: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=1250981
EDIT: I just noticed how old this thread was.

  • Unable to authenticate ssh via krb5 / PAM

Anyone able to help with a PAM / krb5 issue? I've got it to the point where it will generate a ticket with kinit and my principal and password, (shown with klist) when I try to ssh to my test box though, ssh authentication fails. looking through the logs (with debugging on, it looks like it's getting past the password check and then failing on something else? In otherwords, everything from the PAM-KRB5 module is indicating a success in the logs(PAM-KRB5 (auth): end: Success), but immediately after that, I get the following coming from sshd : Keyboard-interactive (PAM) userauth failed[7] while authorizing: Permission denied. Is it authenticating against more than one stack maybe?
Relevant stack lines from pam.conf (as far as I know) are:
    sshd-kbdint auth required pam_unix_cred.so.1 debug
    sshd-kbdint auth binding pam_krb5.so.1 debug
    sshd-kbdint auth required pam_unix_auth.so.1 debug
Note* I've tried using both binding and sufficient for pam_krb5.so.1, keytab check is turned off via krb5.conf (verify_ap_req_nofail = false). I've been digging through man pages, manuals, mailing list archives and whatnot for a day or two, I figure there's just something simple that I'm missing.
Test host box is Solaris 10 update 3
Test client box is Solaris 10 update 3
kinit <principal> on the host prompts me for my password and when I enter it, it generates a ticket successfully (verified with klist)
    client-machine$ ssh <kerberosprincipal>@<host>
    returns the prompt:
    Enter Kerberos password for <principal>
The original Kerberos configuration on my test host was done with a sys-unconfig and then plugging in the appropriate Kerberos info when prompted. I edited the krb5.conf as mentioned earlier to disable the keytab file requirement.
Any and all advice on what to check on this would be appreciated. In the meantime, I'm going to go back to the Sys Admin Docs Security Services guide and read the PAM section cover to cover again in case I missed something.
    Thanks!

  • Pam.conf does not use ldap for password length check when changing passwd

I have already posted this in the directory server forum but since it is to do with pam not using ldap I thought there might be some pam experts who check this forum.
I have dsee 6.0 installed on a solaris 10 server (client).
I have a solaris 9 server (server) set up to use ldap authentication.

Whereas /etc/default/passwd on the ldap client says passwords must be 8 characters. This is seen with the pam_authtok_check: minimum length from /etc/default/passwd: 8
. It is clearly not using the policy from the directory server but checking locally. So I can login ok using the ldap server for authentication but when I try to change the password it does not use the policy from the server which says I only need a minimum lenght of 6 characters.
I have read that pam_ldap is only supported for directory server 5.2. Because I am running ds6 and with password compatability in ds6 mode maybe this is my problem. Does anyone know of any updated pam_ldap modules for solaris 9?

you can try passwd -r ldap for changing the ldap passwds...

  • [SOLVED] How to disable "No mail." message upon login?

This one's really stumping me. I disable the mail message a few months ago by creating a .hushlogin file in my home directory. That did the trick. Now, I am seeing the message again, and I don't know why. .hushlogin still exists in my home directory. Here's my /etc/login.defs:

Is there anyway to change the way the resource

rather than setting a random password? No there is no way to do that.
The usage of passwd -d and or -l is limited to certain installations. If you read the man page for passwd you will see that it only works for files as the repository not for any of the other possibilities (NIS or NIS+ or ldap). It also depends on PAM modules to implement this and they do not have to be configured on the system.

  • Broken functionality after update (gnome, pam, glib2, systemd, etc.)

I upgraded my system yesterday after going for a month or two without updates and a ton of authentication-related stuff broke. Here are some of the issues/symptoms I'm currently experiencing:
    Seeing this message in journalctl:
    May 22 13:13:50 deepspace1 slim[203]: pam_loginuid(slim:session): set_loginuid failed
Pulseaudio is not started when logged into GNOME; aplay does not list any cards when invoked by my user:
    [mcmlxxxvi@deepspace1 ~]$ aplay -l
    aplay: device_list:268: no soundcards found...
    [mcmlxxxvi@deepspace1 ~]$ sudo aplay -l
**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
    card 0: NVidia [HDA NVidia], device 0: ALC662 rev1 Analog [ALC662 rev1 Analog]
    Subdevices: 1/1
    Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
When I start pulseaudio manually, it only lists the dummy output.
    USB sticks no longer auto-mount
I had been using GNOME 3 on forced fallback and logging in through SLiM.
I tried to upgrade libreoffice, which made me upgrade glib2 (to 2.36.2-1), which caused some other problems (pnglib, etc.) so eventually I upgraded everything (including kernel, systemd, pam (to 1.1.6-3) and gnome (to 3.8)) without rebooting. A couple of hours later I was suddenly thrown out of my session and saw something about some journaling/logging utility being passed too large a block (cannot find it in the logs at the moment) on the console. I rebooted and after logging in, gnome-session-failed (the "Oh no" screen) was started. GNOME started successfully when I logged in as root.
Googling around, some threads on here and based on the PAM message above, I tried to downgrade glib2 (to 2.36.1-3, 2.34.3-1, 2.34.2-2 and 2.32.4-1), to upgrade pam (to 1.1.6-4, which had appeared in the meantime) and then downgrade it (back to 1.1.6-3 and then to 1.1.6-1).
glib2 downgrade led to nowhere - later versions led to gnome-session-failed, while with earlier ones GNOME would not start at all). Downgrading pam led me to a situation where I received a "Login incorrect" after entering the username (both console & SLiM) which I had to fix through init=/bin/bash .
Following the advice here I cleared the hidden GNOME files and was finally able to log in (default mode, not fallback). Enabling fallback via gsettings (gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.session session-name gnome) brought back gnome-session-failed.
So I'm led to believe that I originally had 2 problems: fallback mode, which I read had been disabled, and the authentication problem. I'm currently struggling with the latter and would like help on how to approach the situation.
I'm not sure which logs would be needed for troubleshooting, and I'm still quite clumsy with journalctl, but will provide any logs requested.

You should *never* do partial upgrades.  There is a reason why everywhere you see people saying that "partial upgrades are not supported".
I am not sure how you can be "clumsy with journalctl".  As far as its most basic functionality, it is pretty darn straight forward.  Though that is assuming you are willing to do a quick read of the man page... or even the output of "--help".

  • Hot Desking, AD and PAM

    Hi everybody,
I am struggling about a problem with the screenlock on RHEL 5.4 and SRSS 4.2. User are authenticated agains AD Win 2k03 R2 with "Identity Management for Unix" installed. Logging in works fine until user pull their cards or hit <SHIFT-Pause>. The screensaver does not accept my correct password. It has to be s.th. with the pam stacks, as when I disable the card login policy for testing purposes (utpolicy -D -a -m -r card -s card -g), user instantly can work because of the disabled screensaver.
The necessary pam config files did not contain any uthotdesk sunray plugins so I recreated them by entering "/opt/SUNWut/lib/utgenpam disable && /opt/SUNWut/lib/utgenpam enable". After a "utrestart -c" the problem persists.
Any ideas? Help is much appreciated, this is my showstopper for going live at the moment.
    Yours sincerely,
    Martin

  • How to disable certificate validity checking

    Either
    (1)
    using the default com.sun.jndi.ldap.LdapCtxFactory,
    and setting some unknown properties;
    or
    (2)
creating a custom X509 implementation, and then
    Security.setProperty("cert.provider.x509v1", "MyX509CertificateImpl");
    (my class did not seem to get loaded);
    or
    (3)
    decompile Sun X509CertImpl.class
    or
    (4)
    decompile CertificateValidity.class.
I tried all of these, and (4) succeeded.
I would rather have a more official method.
Any help would be appreciated. Email [email protected] please.
Our AD LDAPS cert has expired and renewing it is not an option right now.
But I thought disabling validity checking would be a good trick
    to know anyway.

I have finally solved this issue, after only 4 months (it was my first issue using archlinux). Since the most part of shadow functionality is managed by pam, /etc/login.defs is not used at all. I had to edit /etc/pam.d/login. I had to comment out this line in that file:
    # session optional pam_mail.so dir=/var/spool/mail standard
I am very satisfied, I hated those unuseful "No new mail"

  • How to disable login mail checking?

I would like to disable the mail checking on each login: I am not interested in seeing "No new mail" or else each time I login in a console. In other distributions, there was a specific setting in /etc/login.defs:
    MAIL_CHECK_ENAB = no
I do not find this option in the arch /etc/login.defs, nor it is mentioned in man login or man login.defs; trying to set it anyway results in login complianing about badformed configuration file.
I also tried to comment out both MAIL_DIR and QMAIL_DIR, but without success.
Is there an other method to get this result? Thanks in advance for your help.

  • CiscoSecure ACS 3.3 with Linux PAM?

Hi. We have two new console servers (not Cisco products) and I'm trying to authenticate using our TACACS+ servers. Per the documentation I have found, I have put the appropriate commands in the pam.conf file. I have the communciation unencrypted. The authentication and authorization work, but the accounting is not. I have captured the TACACS server replying with "cannot process accounting message". Has anybody gottem ACS 3.3 working with Linux-PAM?

I think you are a victim of the AD Aware as opposed to AD Integrated. CiscoSecure is AD Aware, it can use the AD database for Password authentication (a very simple implementation of single sign-on). But the local database is used for everything else. From my point of view this is a good thing.
If the AD Admin, Network Admin and Security officer are all the same person, then I agree with you.
From your message you seem to be using ACS to secure your Cisco devices (routers/switches), I would not want people who manage AD to be able to give network device access to anyone they choose. Nore do I trust AD admins to understand network security. Normally the network people are very small subset of IT organization, so this should not be a big problem. Also, the real component that you are using to secure the devices is TACACS+ (hopefully) or RADIUS because the devices are not AD Aware themselves.
If you need for every user that is in AD to be a user in ACS, there is import/export support for both for inital setup, after that it is up to you to keep the databases synchronized. You can do this with routine import/exports, but I advise against it.
If you are using ACS to manage a Dial or IPSec environment, I agree this is a pain, but do you really want everyone to be able to dial-in or VPN into your network without coming to you for access? Don't you want to be able to disable/expire peoples access for devices and remote access without calling the AD admin?
For the kind of things you want, you need an AD Integrated product like Exchange or you can try some of the vendors at listed at http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/partners/adall.asp
FYI - This is my understanding of the product, I'm sure there are a lot of people out there that know more then me, so feel free to correct me.

  • Printer disables iMac

My printer almost completely disables my iMac computer which I usually have to turn off manually. (I thought this was a problem with my HP printer and thus purchased a Canon. Not so.) Snow Leopard, Firefox browser, 10.8.5 Mac operating system, printer/driver installed with help from Canon rep. last month (August, 2014).
The computer goes into the scrolling ball of death so I cannot use commands like Print.  The only way I print now is to save a document on desktop, force quit applications or just shut off whole machine manually, re-start computer and turn on printer and print desktop document without turning on browser.
I sure could use some help.

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off merely by the seeming complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can read it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of the script have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
    4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return  three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report what happened. No harm will be done.
    12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
    14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.
