Disable printer usage on network

I'm trying to completely hide my printer on the wifi network. As I am at a college, I do not want people randomly adding my printer and printing things. I disabled Printer sharing in System Preferences; however, other Macs can still add the printer and print by going to Printers & Scanners, pressing the "+" and finding and adding my printer. I believe this is because of bonjour. How can I ensure that only I can print from my printer? Thanks.

I can think of two simple ways of doing what you want:
1. Create your own LAN behind a router. That way the firewall within the router will prevent everybody from accessing your printer.
2. Connect your printer locally to your computer, either via USB or via a direct Ethernet connection to a spare network port on your computer.
A possible third solution would involve buying a server, a managable printer and printer management software. But that would be overkill and it would cost very much.

  • Script to disable Client for Microsoft Networks and File and Print Sharing for Microsoft Networks

Hi, I am trying to find a way of using a batch file or vbscript to disable Client for Microsoft Networks and File and Print Sharing for Microsoft Networks on a Network Interface Controller.
I've done some searching on the internet and I can see some suggestions to locate the Setting ID of the NIC and then remove the value from the "Bind" string under "HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanmanServer\Linkage" and "HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanmanWorkstation\Linkage"
I tried this but it didn't seem to uncheck itself from the NIC properties under NCPA.cpl
    Can someone help me?

  • Disabling data usage on Elipsis Tablet does not turn of Data Usage

Yesterday purchased 3 tablets for my kids. First thing I did when I got home was add home wifi and disable data usage. Ridicoulous but this does not disable data usage. Tablet used 4gb of data before I realized what was going on, all the while connected to home Wifi, like the data connectio took precedence. This is a major flaw of this tablet. Called Customer Service, waiting for a mgr to call back. Unfortunatly waiting on hold for over 45min without getting to tech support but in the end the only way to turn off data apparently (or at least I found) was to put in Airplane mode. This is not right!
Even support forum states this is the way to enable/disable data. I feel dooped!

I'm sorry you waited so long trying to get through to Tech Support dm805. I know being able to disable Mobile Data is important to keep usage under control. As Ann154 mentioned, you are able to turn off Mobile Data in Settings. You can go to Settings> Data Usage> Select Mobile Data (at top right hand side), and it will turn off.  You can also go to Settings> More> Mobile Networks> Uncheck Data Enabled.
    I hope this helps.

  • How can I disable printer access on a managed account (guest/kids)?

Is there a way to disable printer use on a managed user account? I have created a limited user account for my kids to use. The problem is, sometimes they visit these websites that allow them to print their "works of art" and by doing so they use up a lot of my printer toner and paper. I don't want to have to turn off the printer and create a giant printer queue as the printer is a network printer shared among other computers. I rather just disable their printing capabilities. Deleting the printer from their user account also deleted it from my main (admin) account. I'm posting this in hopes someone out there knows how to do what I'm asking for. Thank you.

Scotch_Brawth has the basic steps outlined.  A few additions I would make is that CUPS is already running on your system in the background.  It is the underlying printing system for OS X.  The easiest way to control the users of printers is through the web interface to CUPS.  This is what is disabled by default in Mountain Lion.  You can enable it by using the Terminal (/Applications/Terminal).  Copy and paste the following command into a Terminal wndow and then hit Enter or Return:
    cupsctl WebInterface=yes
Now you can use any web browser and go to http://127.0.0.1:631/printers/.  Click on the link to the printer you want to control.  There will be two drop down menus near the top of the page -- Maintenance and Administaration.  Use the Administration menu to select Set Allowed Users.  The page that will appear lets you enter a list of users to either allow to use the printer or prevent from using the printer.  Make the appropriate choices and click the Set Allowed Users button.  You will be prompted to enter your administrator's user name and password.
You only need to enable the web interface once.  It will then be available unless you use the Terminal to disable it or until an Apple update turns it off again.

  • Can you completely disable data usage on iPhone?

I have an extra iPhone 4S that I got from a friend who's contract ended. My girlfriend has a very basic plan from AT&T (unlimited calling and texting). She can send picture messages also, but she doesn't have a data plan from what I understand. (I always thought MMS required data?) I was wondering if there was anyway I could completely disable data usage on the iPhone so there would be no charges. I know this limits the phone capabilities, but it would be an improvement to her current phone. Also would I have to register the phone in her name so she can use the phone with her SIM card or is it as easy as popping it in?
    Thank you!

Your problem is that AT&T does not permit iPhones, on their network, without an associated data plan. So, like it or not, you'll still have to pay for data. If you try to use the phone without a data plan, they will eventually catch you & bill you accordingly. All carriers call tell exactly what type of device is using their network.
In fact, I'm not aware of any carrier, in the US, that will permit an iPhone on their network without an associated data plan.

  • Disable Printer Sharing via .plist?

    Hi All,
I am trying to find the .plist file that holds the boolean value for turning printer sharing on and off.
Via the GUI this option is located at:
Preferences > Sharing > "Printer Sharing"
I can see what appears to be the option located in this plist:
    ~/library/preferences/com.apple.alf.plist
and PlistEdit Pro tells me it us under:
    firewall > printer sharing > state - with a value of 1 or 0.
Changing the option in that plist does not change the setting in Prefernces (and vice versa).
Reason: I have 600+ Macs on our network, and users have started enabling the check box thus sharing their printers via Bonjour to every other user - I'm sure you can imagine how confusing this looks when you attempt to add a new printer, and the problems when User A adds printers shared by User B and suddenly cannot print when User B takes their macbook away.
I would like to push out a profile to disable printer sharing. I can already disable access to the Sharing preference pane via profile to stop more  users turning the option on - but it does not revert the change made by other users.
    Cheers
    /Glaic

I am not aware of a plist but you could try modifying the cupsd.conf file (located in /etc/cups) and then pushing that to the +600 Mac's.
    Within the cupsd.conf file there is the entry "DefaultShared" which the man page shows as;
"Specifies whether local printers are shared by default. The default is "Yes".
I just tried modifying the file now using the cups admin page (localhost:631/admin). You will see the setting "Share printers connected to this system". Disable the setting and save the changes. Then when you open the cupsd.conf in TextEdit you will see that browsing is disabled and shared printers, even if share enabled in Printers & Scanners, will not be visible on the local network.

  • Tracking the printer usage

    Hi,
I'm new to Linux administration. Is there any log file available to check for the printer usage in a network, which gives details like
    1) user who gave the print command
    2) IP address of the machine from which print command is given
    OR
can we write a script to manage it...
    OR
is there any tool available for doing so...
    Thanks in advance...
    Srikanth

Assuming that you are using cups as the print manager, there are log files in /var/log/cups
If this doesn't answer the question, you might want to look here: http://www.linux-foundation.org/en/OpenPrinting/Database/ErrorLogFAQ

    Hey bobupton!
Try going into the printer's EWS and using Google's public DNS servers (8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4). It sounds like you know what you're doing so I skipped a few steps on how to get there but if you need more help with it let me know!

  • How can I get my ipad to print to my printer on the network

I can not get my Ipad to print to my network printer.  The printer is an HP6500a plus officejet

You can use HP ePrint, Apple's AirPrint, or HP ePrint Home & Biz mobile app when it comes to the 6500A Plus eAIO.
Here are some articles pertaining to usage of these apps/methods of wireless printing that may help!
General how to for all methods:

    Getting started with eprint:

You want to make sure your printer has the latest firmware installed to support airprint. You can find that software by navigating your control panel on the printer to updates.
Once this has been performed it should be viewable as an Airprint compatible device through the ipad.
You can also download the ePrint Home & Biz app for free from the apple catalogue and use that method as well with much the same result, as well as online management capabilities on the printer.
    Hope this helps!

  • Connecting Printer to Wireless Network

Attempting to connect a printer to a network wireless using WPS to no avail. It appears that the U-Verse Gateway model 3801HGV has the option disabled/idle mode. How to enable the WPS option? Any advice would be appreciated.

    Enable WPS here -http://192.168.1.254/xslt?PAGE=C_2_1
You can press the WPS button there, too.
You will need the gui password on the label on the RG.

  • HT4356 My iPad does not see my printer on the network.  The printer says it is connected and I can ping it from my pc, but the iPad does not seem to be able to find it.  I am going though an AOL supplied router, I have read this can cause issues, is this

I am trying to print from my iPad to a HP 3520 printer using AirPrint. I have connected the printer to my local wireless network and it confirms it is connected. However my iPad can not find the printer on the network when it searches for it.  I am using an AOL supplied router and have read reports that this can cause problems.  Is this the case? How do I resolve this issue?

    Hi,
That indeed can be caused by a router as Apple's AirPrint uses Bonjour to communicate with the device.
Bonjour Services relies on IP Multicasting which have to be supported by your network.
To isolate the problem, please follow the steps below to enable Wireless Direct and directly connect the iPad to your printer (which means without using the router).
Once the iPad connected to the Wireless Direct network try printing and check for any difference.
If the printer can be found via the temporary connection but not through your router that indicates lack of Multicast support or wrong configuration of your router.
In such a case be sure to contact AOL and check if the router support Multicasting, if so ensure it is enabled within your router configuration, as well ensure it have the latest firmware installed..

  • Wireless printer disconnecting from network

    Hello all,
Here is my problem.  I have a new HP 3510 set up as a wireless printer on my home network.  I have three computers, two wired and one wireless.  I have a netgear router for 3G air card.  I can connect my printer to the network initially.  I can print from any computer, initially.  I can even use ePrint.  The trouble is that the next day, when I fire up any of my computers that printer is no longer on the network.  I have upgraded the router firmware, and the trouble seems to be there.  When I power cycle the router, everything is connected once more.  I have set a static IP on the printer.  Furthermore, and have tried setting the printer as a static IP within the router.  I am now at a loss.  I have read about setting the DHCP range on my router outside the printer IP.  Would this even make a difference?  Since I am not sure what is happening, I do not know if this will help any.  It acts like either the router or the printer are going into a sleep mode or something, however, my phone is also connected on the network, and when I get home it immediately connects.
Thank you in advance for the help.
FYI: the two wired computers are XP and Win7.  the wireless is Vista
I have wpa-psk + wpa2-psk set for my router security.  Have not tampered with the router firewall, but since the printer connects initially, not sure if that would be the cause.  I have set the printer IP well above anything that has been used by any other networked hardware.

Hi, unless you reserve the static IP in DHCP it is best to assign a static IP outside the DHCP range.
