Disable quicktime plug-in opening TIF files in browsers?

Whenever I click on a TIF file in a browser (Chrome or Safari), Quicktime plug-in tries to open the file. I'd rather have the file opened by an application that actually works (quicktime fails to load or displays garbage in most cases, but I do not care - I just want it gone) or just downloaded without opening (preferred). Rightclicking to opt for download is not an option on the sites I use. In windows I could disable it via Quicktime icon in Control Panel, but I cannot find a comparable thing on the Mac. This is unbelievably frustrating. It cost me more than the Macbook itself in lost productivity...

I already have TIFF files set to open with Preview. Nonetheless, USPTO.GOV website image files are all in TIFF format and it renders a broken plugin error in all browsers (Chrome, Safari, Opera, Firefox). Opera is actually the only browser that gives me the option to download the file, but that is cludgey. Anyone get it to actually work as a plugin?

  • Don't want QuickTime to open .tif files in IE

How do I stop QuickTime from trying to open .tif files for me in Internet Explorer? My company has a web site where I can look at engineering drawings in .tif format. I used to be able to left-click on a link and have a window open that gave options to open the file, download it, etc. But after installing QuickTime on my computer, when I left-click on a link, QuickTime automatically jumps in and opens the drawing in the IE window. That wouldn't be so bad, except that I can only view the first page! Can anyone help me?

No Nancy, everything opens just fine, the issue is the document window opens up full-screen behind everything (all my panels are there on top). The window is obviously upworkable until I scale it to fit in the rest of my viewable space. An html page is centered in this wide-screen upon opening, effectively being partially covered with tabs and panels. The outside space that the full screen window takes up is nothing but a solid color, covering useful space where I want to see my panels, some desktop for other apps if I wish etc. So effectively I have to resize the full screen window down, to the edges of the "workable" html designated space, which is all I need to see. Not 8" of a blank, useless window on each side, covering everything else.  I would assume most of us web designers are using and viewing other apps, windows etc. on their desktop at the same time. If nothing else you can't even work on the html page until you resize it i order to see the panels which cover it. In PS for instance once you size a document window the program remembers the size on your screen and position where it opened last.

  • How to open .tif files in Adobe X

I have installed Adobe X Pro, and after using Adobe 7 Pro, now I cannot open .tif file as I could with 7 Pro.
Is there a helper file or special set up procedure?

The Mail ap can handle TIFF files for viewing purposes. They can be saved to the Photos app (from Mail, or other apps such as DropBox), but I beleive they get converted to JPG in the process. There are also a number of third party apps that can at least view TIFF files.
If you could describe exactly what it is you are trying to accomplish, someone may be able to provide more detailed assistancce.

i just made a movie in iMovie and exported in MP4 format, now it won't open, error message says quicktime can't open the file ***? Anyone?

I have the same problem. I'm using Mavericks OS and latest iMovie. Both downloaded last week. I save the movie into File (as directed) and  QuickTime

  • Opening tif files and choosing file locations

I cannot open tif files for editing or save files to my usb stick when using Adobe Photoshop touch on my Galaxy Note 10.1 tablet, which is running the latest android 4.1 available for it. Any help or advice would be appreciated. Thanks. P Soor

If I recall, PS Touch cannot open TIFFs (at least not yet). Flattened PSDs, PSDX, GIF, JPG and PNG were the formats PS Touch could open.

  • Droid App for Opening Tif Files

Does anyone know whether there is an app that will open Tif files?  I am not looking for something that requires changing file types or manipulation of a file.  I am looking for an app that will open a Tif without a lot of fuss.  I have searched high and low for an app that will open a tif file.  I have tried many apps claiming to open a tif, but have yet found anything that works.  I can't believe that there isn't somoene that has come out with an app for this yet.

Try this app (TIFF and FAX viewer)
    from http://www.androidzoom.com/android_applications/tiff%20viewer
Also here is a post that suggest a few apps but it seems that there havent been a report of any that works the way you ask but maybe one of these options may help...   http://forum.androidcentral.com/android-applications/5096-tiff-viewer.html

  • Opening .tif files

When I try to download & open a .tif (image) file, my Mac automatically uses QuickTime to open the file.
How do I change it to open in Preview instead? (I want .tif files to work the same way as .jpg files on my Mac.)

    two ways to do this:
the first is temporary, and doesn't affect the default - right click the file > select open with > then choose preview (if it's on the list) - If it's not, select the last option "other" and then find preview that way
the second is a permanent change. Right click the file and select "get info", this should bring up a tall thin window which has a section (5th down I think) entitled open with. This may be 'closed' - only showing "open with" - if it is, click the little triangle arrow to open it. You can then change the program from the dropdown list (again, if preview isn't shown use the other option to find it). If you want all .tiff files to open with preview press the change all button once you've changed it to preview.

  • Opening tif files in PSE7

I am using the trial version of PSE7 on Windows XP Home. When saving Nikon RAW files (NEF) to TIF from the PSE editor, I can subsequently re-open the TIF file without a problem. When exporting NEF files from the organizer to TIF files, I can NOT re-open these TIF files afterward. I get a message "Cannot open filename.tif because it is the wrong type of file." I do not believe the problem to be related to the source NEF file, because I tried both approaches with the same file.
Anybody have any idea waht I could be wrong? Me or the program?

    Ludo,
It may be that you need to update the Adobe Camera Raw (ACR) plug-in:
    http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/knowledgebase/index.cfm?id=327437
If you have a new camera that is not understood by the version of ACR you have, then you could get that error message. What camera model produced the NEF?
Heres what I think may be happening: When you export a .NEF from the Organizer, PSE records metadata in the TIFF concerning ACR. When you then open that exported TIFF in the Editor, it sees the metadata and opens it in the ACR plug-in. If there is a camera model in the metadata that ACR doesnt recognize, it could instead produce this error message.
On the other hand, when you use the Editors Save As to save a .NEF as a TIFF, that metadata doesnt get recorded. So when you open that TIFF in the Editor, it doesnt try to open it with the ACR plug-in.
To help others, here, please let us know one way or the other whether this addresses your problem.

  • Quicktime doesn't open AVI file with Perian installed

I have installed Perian but Quicktime X doesn't open AVI files for a week. I have repaired permissions. But Quicktime only plays the AVI file if I reboot the Mac. VLC always plays the file. The AVI codec is XVID. Quicktime doesn't play other formats such as FLV. I have deleted .plist files, com.apple.QuickTimePlayerX.plist. I have found other files(com.apple.QuickTimePlayerX.plist.0GH3f31, com.apple.QuickTimePlayerX.plist.0h9MBzV...) that I deleted also. Any idea? Thanks

And now ... surprisingly I view AVI files in Quicktime without Perian.
QT has very limited AVI support (file type and a few older codecs) built in. Most common codecs use by Windows users, however, require the additional support provided by Perian. If the AVI files are now playing in QT without Perian, then simply check the Inspector, Properties, or Info window to see which codecs are in your AVI file and you should be able to tell if they are among those supported "natively" by QT. Also note that this regaining of the ability to play your files may indicate a component conflict of some sort may have existed previously.

  • Photoshop can't open TIF file?

I've just received a TIF file (approx 5mb) that Photoshop can't open.  I get an error: " Could not complete your request because the file is not compatible with this version of Photoshop".  I've never had trouble with TIFs before, and assumed a TIF is a TIF is a TIF....
I also tried opening the TIF file in the 32-bit version of PS CS5, but got the same error.  I then tried it on my 32-bit Vista machine, and got the same error in both Photoshop CS5 and CS3.
The file itself is OK - I opened it no problem in Corel Photopaint (latest version) and resaved it as a PSD file, which then opened fine in PS. Seems odd that a flaky Corel program is more compatible than Photoshop!  It's a recently created TIF file too, just a photo of a new product.
    Anyone else struck this issue?
    I'm running CS5 on a Win 7 64-bit PC with Core i7 850, 12gb ram.

Most likely the TIFF contains Photoshop metadata or layer data, and that part is corrupt.
Other applications won't read that section of the file, and thus won't see the corruption.
It's not a matter of compatibility, or the file format - it's a matter of Photoshop reads more than other apps, and detects the corruption that other apps are ignoring.

  • Quicktime will not open video files - QuickTime couldn't parse it: -2048

I just purchased a new Sony handycam so that I can make movies using iMovie. However, iMovie will not import the files from my camera and although the files show up on the drive as Quicktime MPEG files (with suffix MPG) neither Quicktime or iMovie will open the files. iMovie gives an error message saying "Quicktime couldn't parse it: -2048"
Can anyone help - I really want to open the files in iMovie so that I can make videos and I'm worried that my expensive new Handycam is a worthless purchase!
    Thanks in advance...

Your files are MPEG-2 and you need additional software to view them in QuickTime:

and a different application than iMovie to convert the audio portion:

  • Quicktime Will Not Open Caption Files??

I tried to locate this specific issue in the dicussion forums, but did not find sometihng similar or an answer. My apolgies in advance if I overlooked a similar post.
I have videos that I have captioned that will not open correctly on other computers (in QT), besides my own. I have added captions as a text track and made adjustments to their positioning on the screen. When others open the QT files from another computer, you can either just see the text track and the movie is a white box, or QT will simply not open the file stating this is not in a format that QT understands.
I noticed there is additional codecs listed with these problematic files, specifically VP6F, MPEG Layer 3, Text codecs.
My question what is the best way for me to remove or change the codec so anyone with QT can view? I have a workaround where I place the captioned QT into Screenflow and re-export, which removes the text codec and will work fine on other computers. I just want to see if there is something I can do in QT/QT Pro to avoid this workaround.
    Thank you in advance.
