Disable recording desktop sounds
I'm running Windows 8.1. In calls people tell me they can hear everything thats going on in my desktop. I've checked Windows sound settings and the microphone does not pic up any desktop audio however in skype settings the microphone area pics up all of my dekstop sounds. How to disable?
The easiest solution is offcourse to turn system sounds off in windows ( controlpanel > sound > Sounds > no sounds ).
However seting up a mic treshold using something like this:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/noisegator/
Custom mic input treshold should really be a Skype feature, it can be tricky though, by experience from Teamspeak, to get it right, without cutting of speech.

Is there a terminal command to disable the "Boing' sound ?
Hello, Everyone
I was wondering if any one knows if there is a terminal command that can
be used to disable the "boing" sound that folders and files make (in Tiger)
as they are being moved about the desktop and or into finder windows.
A couple of people have looked in the System preferences, usual areas but
can not locate the file for this "Boing" sound. If any one knows I would love
the answer. TIA for reading this & any help.; )

I presume you have unchecked the "Play user interfacesound effects" > in System Preferences> Sound. The other OP wants to disable only the infamous boing. I found both the files you wrote of. Thank you very much !
I just needed to summarize this & then undoing if so desired.
Bill, please what would the command be for undoing this action ?
Launch Terminal and type this: sudo gzip
enter ~~
password prompt,
then this : /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/ScreenReader.framework/Versions/A/Resources/S ounds/SpringForward.aiff
Is this correct ?
Thanks so very, very much for your expertise, patience and sharing it with me.~ Eme

[Solved] ffmpeg records no sound
I use the following string to record a video with ffmpeg:
ffmpeg -f alsa -ac 2 -i hw:0,0 -f x11grab -r 30 -s 1920x1080 -i :0.0 -acodec pcm_s16le -vcodec libx264 -preset ultrafast -threads 8 output.mkv
I only have alsa, no PulseAudio or OSS stuff.
I've been trying everything I managed to find through google but nothing seems to work. General sound output works, I can listen to music and do all my stuff like I'm used to, I just can't get ffmpeg to record my sound.
Here are logs from aplay and arecord:

I'm using the latest ffmpeg-git with x264-git. (I compiled it correctly, so I don't think it's a build issue.)
I tried using -i default, -i sysdefault and -i plughw:0,0 instead of -i hw:0,0. I also tried various hw:0,1 etc. combinations, because I was fustrated and didn't know how to continue. I also tried recording only the sound, without the video, but nothing works at all.
Only the video runs perfectly fine. Please help.
Last edited by HitomiTenshi (2013-03-09 17:59:20)Recording sound directly while playing something works with the following .asoundrc script:
pcm.!default
type file
slave.pcm
type plug
slave.pcm
type hw
card 0
device 0
subdevice -1
file /dev/shm/audio.raw
format raw
I then convert the raw file with ffmpeg from RAM. This is extremely annoying though, because the audio file isn't synced to the video. But IT WORKS. I want a solution with ffmpeg though, I have gathered more information, if somebody is interested:

Is there any way to add Item 'IEC958 Default PCM' to numid=28,iface=MIXER,name='Input Source'? I tried recording from 'Line' but it doesn't work.
Am I doing something wrong? I'm still digging mad for a solution, and only the .asoundrc script works this far.

Streaming desktop sound!?
This is most likely a problem on my end, but I'm a little stumped as to how I can stream my desktop sound.
When I try to change the audio device option in Flash Media Live Encoder to something that will stream my desktop audio, I only have the microphone (sigmatel high definition audio) option. I have a feeling i should have something like stereo mix or some kind of playback device.
In my audio devices on my computer I have Speakers/Headphones (SigmaTel High Definition Audio CODEC) and it's working.
My soundcard drivers are updated. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling.. disabling and reenabling.
I downloaded Virtual Audio Cable and tried to use the audio repeater, but this also doesn't have a playback device for me to select in 'Wave In'. Wave out has it though.
Am I doing something wrong? Do you know of any drivers that I can download that will let me stream my desktop audio?
Any help is appreciated.I played my audio from another PC (Windows Media Player) and connect via AUDIO OUT to AUDIO IN of Encoder PC. That worked fine for me.

How do I disable the startup sound on macbook pro 7,1?
I need to disable the startup sound on the macbook pro 7,1 running 10.6.8. If anyone can give me info I would appreciate it.
Look for Startup Sound on Macupdate.com
You really shouldn't turn it off, as if there is a error you won't be able to hear the beep codes.
However you can lower the volume. -
Conditionally disabling record updation after query
Dear members
I've a single record block and I wanna conditionaly disable records updation after query has fetched data. Problem is that if I disable the record updation in Post-Query trigger then it checks the condition for the very first fetched record and it the condition is true, then Updation is disabled for all the fetched records, even if the next records dont meet the condition. I'm using forms-10g. Can u give a better solution??? thanx.you have to use SET_ITEM_INSTANCE_PROPERTY to modify only one record:
BEGIN
IF ... <your_condition> THEN
SET_ITEM_INSTANCE_PROPERTY('YOUR_BLOCK.YOUR_ITEM1', UPDATE_ALLOWED, PROPERTY_FALSE);
ELSE
SET_ITEM_INSTANCE_PROPERTY('YOUR_BLOCK.YOUR_ITEM1', UPDATE_ALLOWED, PROPERTY_TRUE);
END IF;

How do I disable the onboard sound in CMOS?
I have a KT4 Ultra, and I want to disable the onboard sound so I can use my own Soundblaster card. How do I do this? I've looked through the BIOS, and nothing seems to stand out. Do I have to do it on the board itself?
I just downloaded the KT4 Ultra book and will run you thorugh what you have to do....
Your board has "C-Media 8738MX 6-channel audio with SPDIF out" so you will have to disabled it in Bios if you want to use a PCI sound card.
1. Reboot your PC and press "DELETE" to enter Bios.
2. Select "Integrated Peripherals"
3. Scroll down until you see "OnBoard PCI Controller" and then "Audio Controller". (It's last on the list!).
4. Select "DISABLED"
5. Select "SAVE & EXIT SETUP".
6. Turn off your PC.
7. Put your new PCI Sound Card in...I recommend PCI Slots 2-5. Try to keep PCI 1 and 6 clear....
8. Reboot. Your OS will go into "FOUND NEW HARDWARE". Wait until it's done.
9. Put your new PCI Sound card driver CD in and load the new drivers....REBOOT. -

How can I disable the startup sound on the Droid Turbo?
I was going to suggest doing the Following from the Link I added below to see if Silence Mode would silence the power up but on my Droid Maxx it does not the start up Droid is still present so I'm not really sure there is an option to silence it.
The First Link is for the ( Ultra Droid Maxx and Mini) the Second Link is for the Droid Turbo. the instructions for the two style of phones are the same.. as far as I could tell

Cannot record ingame sound with glc (-git)
I have a problem with recording ingame sound with some games with glc (well, glc-git). glc says, it can record sound from games, if they use alsa (or sdl and forcing sdl to use alsa). As long as I don't use pulseaudio, this shouldn't be a problem. But for some games, I can't get the sound recording to work. The 2 at the moment are:
FTL
Amnesia: The Dark Descent
I usually get a message like this:
[ 1.46s alsa_hook error ] 0xa8a8170: unsupported audio format 0x0e
[ 1.46s alsa_hook error ] 0xa8a8170: can't extract hardware configuration: Operation not supported (95)
I can record the game, but not the audio. If someone can help or test it, if it works for him, that might be nice. Or if someone knows a workaround or so. Or if someone can confirm, that there is no audio recording for those 2 games (but I actually don't wanna hear it... :-) ).
Also there are plenty of games, I got the audio recording to work with. You can see it in my youtube-channel: http://www.youtube.com/user/ChemBroTronNo1doorknob60 wrote:Do you use 64 bit? I don't have a copy of Amnesia downloaded right now, but if Amnesia is a 32 bit binary game, and you use 64 bit, you need to make sure you have the proper 32 bit libraries. lib32-glc will probably be enough.
That's not the issue, the problem is that some games are firing 32-bit float audio (0x0e type as indicated in the error) into ALSA through whatever means, and the standard GLC only supports 16, 24 and 32bit signed int audio. My fork above adds very rudimentary support for float.
