Disable "Remember this password in my keychain" checkbox?

Can we disable the "Remember this password in my keychain" question and checkbox?
When mounting another computer's drive in network, we want the password to be entered manually, so that an unauthorized operator cannot mount the other computer.
But the "Remember this password in my keychain" checkbox comes up, and one of our authorized users, having entered the password from his memory, may, in fact often has, inadvertently, or through lack of knowledge, checked that box. (Sometimes that box may even be checked by default?) From then on, any user of the computer can mount the other computer. The password's value is destroyed. This question and checkbox seem to violate basic security logic, and seemingly should be able to be turned off.
Can we disable that "Remember this password in my keychain" checkbox?
As an alternative, can we just disable the keychain, perhaps by locking it? We use it very little in our operation.
A solution that seems too complicated and likely wrong way to do it is suggested at:
http://serverfault.com/questions/37278/how-to-block-finders-remember-this-passwo rd-on-client-computers

Hi Packwood and BD,
This is a very interesting subject, and one I would be interested in hearing about your solution.
There has been a recent thread on the Discussions about multi-platform home networking and having to "remember" the userid-password to get the machines to communicate.
On the other hand, where I spend my daytime hours, the installed base is Windows machines and the IT and computer security folks have not found a way to disable remember password. That is handled as an administrative issue by making it a security violation to check the remember box on any software, especially Internet Explorer. Repercussions for security violations are not nice, but still the users have to be trusted to obey the rules on this.
So, I would be interested in what you end up with that takes things out of the user's hands.

• Don't "Remember this password in my keychain."?

Is there a way to make it the default to not have the "Remember this password in my keychain" checkbox checked everytime? I never want the password to be saved in my keychain, but everytime it comes up, the box is checked. It's a pain unchecking it every single time I log into my Server Preferences. Can't my OS just understand that I don't want to save it? I looked in the Keychain Access preferences but didn't know if anything in there had anything to do with my problem. Please help. This is driving me insane!

Look in your Keychain for a password related to your network. Use Keychain Access. It is located in the /Applications/Utilities folder. If there is a network entry in the "System" keychain for your personal WPA2 network, delete it. If not there, are you absolutely positively certain that WPA2 is currently active on your wireless gateway? Does your home network show up under the Airport menubar item with a padlock? On 10.6, and probably 10.5, too, if you option-click on the Airport menubar item, the security algorithm will be shown for the network to which you are currently affiliated (also, if you hover your mouse over other in-range network names, you will get a popup that shows their security algorithms).
To answer your other question, storing passwords in your keychain for things like your wireless network or your email passwords versus not storing them there -- well, they are as secure as your user login password on your computer in conjunction with how secure the computer is physically. From a security standpoint, you are probably at a bigger risk having your network hacked if you have a weak password - or encryption is inadvertently turned off altogether so you have an open network when you think it's running WPA2. Or inadvertently set to WEP which has been demonstrated to be hacked in like 40 seconds with programs available on the internet (e.g., aircrack). Many routers come with a pretty strong WPA2 password preset for you right out of the box. Also, if you don't need to turn on Sharing Services (e.g., file sharing, screen sharing, remote login, etc.), then don't turn 'em on.

• The box that asks if i would like firefox to remember this password doesn't pop up, how do i enable it?

I need to know how to enable the box that asks if i would like firefox to remember this password.

Normally when you install Firefox this feature is turned on by default. You can check the status in the Options dialog:
orange Firefox button (or Tools menu) > Options > Security tab
In the second section, there's a checkbox for "Remember passwords for sites". These articles have more information:
* [[Password manager - Remember, delete and change saved passwords in Firefox]]
* [[Use a Master Password to protect stored logins and passwords]]
Now... some sites add code to the fields on their forms to block autocompletion (which also blocks saving logins), so you may find some sites where Firefox will not offer to save the password for this reason. There may be workarounds, as have been discussed many times for Yahoo! mail, for example, but since these are lengthy to describe, please post back if the problem is site-specific and if possible provide a link to the login form.

Do not use [[Clear Recent History]] to clear the "Site Preferences"
Clearing "Site Preferences" clears all exceptions for cookies, images, pop-up windows, software installation, and passwords.

• I clicked on "remember this computer" accidentally. I want to disable this and not have my sign in name and password already there. How do I disable "remember this computer"?

When wanting to sign in for email, a screen pops up asking if you want "to remember this computer"? I accidentally clicked on remember instead of the X, to close it, and now my computer has my email name and password in place whenever you want to sign in. I share this computer with 4 other family members, and I do not want my name and password remembered on the computer. How do I get the remember this computer changed to no?

• I get the firefox pop up "do you want to remember this password", but it does not save it. There is no "yes" option on the pop up. How can I get Firefox to save my passwords?

I want Firefox to save my passwords as it has in the past, but now it is not doing so. I am using version 6.0.2, I see the pop up asking to remember the password, but firefox does not save the passwords. What can I do to correct this so FF starts saving my passwords?

Firefox 4 and later versions place a key icon on the location bar that allows to (re)open the dialog to save the password at any time.
That pop-up dialog has a button labeled with "Remember Password".
If you click the arrow next to that button then you see the other choices ("Never Remember Password for this site", "Not Now").
• Why won't the user name and password for my podcast save when I click "Remember this password?"

I have to enter the podcast log in information every time I update my podcast even though I click the box to remember the password.

You should have received a small booklet with the router that contains that information. however, when the Verizon tech installs the router, he/she usually logs into the router during the installation, and the router requires the password to be changed at first login. So there are two answers:
1) If nobody has logged into the router, or you have used the reset button to reset the router, the login should be : admin and password
2) If the tech did log in, they normally change the password to: password1
If you can't get in then reset the router using the reset button and use option 1.
Note: Actiontec routers include a "security" feature (a big joke!!!) that when you type the password two or three bullets appear for each key pressed. Just ignore that crap and type the password the way it should be.

• Keychain. won't remember server passwords

Hello,
I have a MBP running 10.6 and an imac running 10.5.
Everything is on a Time Capsule network.
I have two separate logins on the MBP and just one on the imac.
Every time I try to access the other computer over the network, I have to re-type the user name and password for that machine.
Basically, i want to be able to press the button on the server list and connect straight to the networked hard drive.
However (in either direction) - even if I select the button "remember this password in my keychain" - the keychain fails to remember the password and I have to wait, even if I click out of the network server and back in...
I assume this is a problem with the keychains (on both machines)... can anyone provide me with a fix for this problem... many thanks
Ben

Try going into Keychain Access (in /Applications/Utilities) then under the "KeyChain Access" item on the menu bar, select "Keychain First Aid" (or just simultaneously apply the ⌥⌘A keys.
Or, in Keychain Access, you could try just deleting any item that pertains to login to the computer with which you are trying to connect, then at next connection, be sure the "Remember password" checkbox is checked.
Another option that you might consider, once you can connect without having to enter username/password every time, is, once mounted, to drag the icon of the other computer onto your dock -- that will give you a one-click dynamic AFP mounting capability whenever needed.

• Keychain won't remember WEP password

every time I try and get mail or connect to the internet via airport this machine fails, and after going through network diagnostics requires me to enter the WEP password ... EVERY TIME ... very annoying. I check the "remember this password" box (every time), but the machine WILL NOT remember the password ...HELP

Try opening your Keychain Access app (Applications/Utilities/Keychain Access) and going to Keychain Access > Keychain First Aid. There you can verify and repair problems in your keychain.

• Mozilla does not remember ldap password, even though I check the "remember" checkbox.

Every time I enter an email address, Mozilla pops up the "LDAP Server Password Required". I enter the password and check the "Use password manager to remember this password". Then the message pops up again. I enter the info again. Then it accesses the LDAP server. But next time I type in an email address, it hasn't remembered the password.
Thanks, Vilis

It could be the password files are corrupted and not accepting changes, so I would delete (or move to a safe location) these files from the profile folder: keys.db, signons.sqlite, signons#.txt. Select Help/Troubleshooting Information, click Show Folder to open the profile folder, exit TB, and delete or move the files.
You can record any stored passwords before doing this by opening Tools(or AppMenu/Options)/Options/Security/Passwords/Saved Passwords, as deleting the password files from the profile will erase all stored passwords.

• How can I stop Firefox from remembering a password for a site, so anyone on a shared computer can't use it?

Someone who used our home computer must have clicked "Do you want Firefox to remember this password?" when using one of my shopping sites. So now when I try to sign in to that site, the password and email are already filled in, and I just have to click. Anybody can do that and I want to stop it. Tried changing the password, but it was no good.

• How can I get Firefox to remember a password?

I was trying to log in to a website but had forgotten my password so I was routed to the security questions. Each time I entered a security question answer, the little Firefox box popped up asking me if I wanted Firefox to remember this "password". Each time I clicked on "Not now" and continued. When I had finally been sent a temporary password, logged into the site and changed the password, I logged out and logged in again. Of course, this time the little box did not pop up offering to remember the password! How do I get Firefox to remember my password?

The website may be using autocomplete=off to prevent Firefox from saving and filling the name and password.
You can remove autocomplete=off with a bookmarklet to make Firefox save names and passwords and other form data.

It's in your Keychain on the computer you usually use to connect to your network - the "kind" will be "AirPort Network Password".
Your Keychain can be opened by using the Keychain Access program. It is in your Utilities Folder.
Open Keychain Access, and type airport in the search field. You will see a number of entries. Choose the one with the name of your wireless network, open it, and check the box next to "show password". Before it reveals itself you will be asked for your login password - the one you use to log in to your MacBook.
The network password will appear in the box.
Quit Keychain Access.
