Disable RSS in Safari 4?
Still looking before I leap: I have RSS disabled in 3.2.3 with the following Terminal command:
defaults write com.apple.Safari DebugSyndicationEnabled 0
Does anyone, perhaps, know if this command will work with Safari 4 (Tiger PPC)? I will probably re-enable before updating to 4 so the update will find everything where it's supposed to be.
Not sure why you want to do this via terminal. Seems selecting "never" in the RSS preference panel>Check for updates ought to accomplish the same result.
There was a security issue with RSS feeds in Safari a while back reported by Brian Mastenbrook, and the only way to deal with it was to completely disable it. It's been fixed now I think, but I guess I still see this as an attack vector and, since I never use it, I'd just as soon disable it.

Safari 4 - how do I disable RSS ?
I've just recently upgraded from the (awful) Safari 3 to Safari 4. Mostly I find 4 very good indeed. However there's one thing that's driving me completely demented.
At regular intervals I get a dialogue asking me to "Enter your name and password to update the RSS feed." It's always for Twitter. It tells me I need to login.
Here's the stupid part. One : I don't use or want RSS updates. I've lived without them for years and I have no desire to start using them now. Two : I'm permanently logged in to Twitter !!! I'm being asked to login to something I'm already logged in to !!!!
How do I disable this stupid pop up? I've looked through Safari Preferences but can't find it anywhere. This didn't even exist in Safari 3.
Please help : this stupid dialogue is driving me round the twist. It arrives without audible warning, so if I didn't notice it, I've typed a load of stuff into the dialogue instead of where I was typing. I wouldn't mind so much, if it was possible to switch it off. HOW DO I SWITCH IT OFF????Thanks Andy. That link shows a lot of people are seeing this Twitter problem! It's a good job I don't want to use RSS or setting the Safari Preference to 'never' would disable RSS completely, right?
Anyhoo, I've now set it to 'never', and if the pop up doesn't appear in the next hour or two I will mark this topic Solved -
I understand that Safari will run faster with Flash disabled, but how do you do that?
a FAR easier method of disabling Flash in Safari is below: (and by the way, the flash extension does slow your safari app and your machine down considerably, if you do not notice the slow down, you are just used to how slow flash has made your safari browser)
hint about flash on safari, if you do download flash from adobe and install it, keep your "acitivty monitor" application in your desktop tool bar, when you launch safari, and go to a webpage with a bunch of crappy flash adds, click on activity monitor, find the flash process that is running and kill it... suddenly your safari application is about 10 times more responsive for every website (that has flash adds of any sort) if you need to watch a video in flash, just relaunch Safari.. and there you have it running with flash again, and then when done immediately kill the flash process again...
"activity monitor' can be found in your applications folder then under the utilities folder... (click on big stop icon after highlighting a process that is running)
apple is interested in improving the whole experience and that means removing old tech that is slowing things down, like flash and RSS, and replacing them with new tech, if you want the old tech, Apple is just allowing those companies to write extensions, so you can get that function back. but you would be wise to try to not do that, and find the new tech...
this hint is the one that has saved the most frustrating minutes of the entire computing experience by far...... (or for that matter any browser that is using flash, if you can't kill it, then Safari is the better browser choice by far since you can kill flash at will) -
Hello dear Apple community
I've a new problem with my fantastic mac OS X 10.7.4 . You will tell me, one more, yeah one more, so now i get probably 150 problems with this version, who should be perfect. And it's often the same problem, to use an application, we "Have to", not to say we must, use another apple software. So, the new sheet is about RSS in safari 6.0.
Before my updating, I could read my RSS flux in Safari, where I was happy about that. Now, Safari want add my RSS in Mail. So I have to read news in my boxmail. Something logic ? Not really ...
I deleted already couple of weeks, ok, few months ago "Mail", as Itunes, and Quicktime. Probably you do some fantastic software, but it's too heavy. So I prefer delete them, and save some memory for my other stuff. Why mail, download all the time, all my e-mail ? I don't need that. If I want read my e-mails, I go on Gmail. It's so easy. And i've an application, who tell me when i've a new e-mail, i click on, and open for me a new tab. Light. It's the new think that apple should do.
Anyway, I'ld like to know how can i read my RSS Flux on Safari, otherwise Opera is awesome.
Kind regards, Pierre. You can't read RSS feeds in Safari 6. You can use Mail, but if you upgrade to OS X 10.8 that won't work either, so I suggest you install a third-party RSS reader, such as "Vienna." There are many others.

Disable Adobe Reader safari plugin
I need to test PDF in browser and i installed Adobe Reader, since i have to doble check correct view in reader as in mac os preview, i also have some selection problem with preview
after i installed Adobe Reader some time when i open PDF in Safari speens my CPU up to 100%?
can't find
i need to keep reader on my mac, but view in safari / browser with preview
in reader under preference i found internet and "display PDF in browser using:" and i flag near it but is gray out / disabled even with safari closedHello,
There's a solution if you want to see the PDF inside Safari's window :
Go to the folder : Your Hard Drive / Library / Internet Plug-ins.
If you see a file with PDF in its name drag it to the trash (or on the desktop).
Quit and restart Safari to test with a PDF.
Put the plug-ins in the same folder. -
Disabling images in safari 5.0.3?
Is this even possible?
I am using mobile BB and donot want to load images most of the time.
If I use the latest firefox I can't get Gmail or facebook to work, and if I use chrome then Gmail just crashes all the time. I currently have three browsers running!
I wanted to switch back to safari but it seems that I can't disable images.
Also, why can't I set my homepage to open with multiple tabs? This has never been a feature of safari, why not? That's nice - I'm surprised there's nothing around... more & more people are using 3G connections, at least occasionally - and the speeds/allowances can be fairly crippling with image-heavy pages.
You probably saw or know of click2flash ? also some of the ad-blocker extensions ( & actual installs ) can greatly reduce the download hit for some sites. -
Why is the keyboard shortcut for 'Select next input source' disabled when using Safari?
I'm using Safari 6.0.5 and am running 10.8.4 on a MacBook Pro 13" from last year.
I've been using Chrome and Firefox heavily recently, but switched to Safari to give it a chance. It's really nice and lightweight, which suits me.
However, for some reason unbeknownst to me, the keyboard shortcut 'Select next input source' is disabled in Safari, in all windows/input methods.
Since I constantly switch input methods, this is incredibly frustrating.
It persists after quit + restart.
Any ideas?Yes, just Safari. In Chrome, Firefox and all other applications it works as expected.

How do I disable a Mac Safari Extension?
Everytime I look at anything, including my OWN website of items for sale, I can't see the copy under the photo because the darn box of comparable items (which are NOT so comparable) hides all of my text and prices. I have tried everything and can't find a way to even find that ext. much less disable it. HELP! The extension says, "See More" in an orange box and then produces this bar of pictures and prices of items from other online shops. SO ANNOYING. I need to remove this or at least have the X in the box work when i don't want this!!! Thanks!
You've looked in Safari - Preferences - Extensions ?
It's also possible that you have 'downlite' (vSearch) adware installed.

You installed the "DownLite" trojan, perhaps under a different name. Remove it as follows. -
Disable full screen safari on iPhone
After upgrading to iOS 7, I noticed that the toolbar disappears in safari while browsing. I am a heavy user of the back button and the bookmarks button. Both of them only require a single touch to use in iOS 6. Now that the toolbar disappears, if I want to use the back button, I either have swipe completely left to right or swipe down to get the toolbar back so I can use the back button. For the bookmarks button, I have to swipe down to bring back the toolbar and then I can use it. Alternatively, I can try to chicken peck the bottom of the screen with the hopes that the toolbar will reappear. If I use this alternative approach, sometimes it works, sometimes nothing happens, and sometimes I hit an ad by mistake.
Is there a way to disable full screen mode in safari on iPhone? I will gladly give up the additional real estate to have a persistent toolbar. It works better with the way I browse.Try this app. I've used it for a year or so and it takes full screen pics. It doesnt offer a ton of advanced functionality but it works. It also allows users to take photos by tapping anywhere on the screen (which was my original reason for downloading). Enjoy

How do I disable SSLv3 in Safari (OSX & iOS)
Hi All,
So following this morning's Google announcement on the SSLv3 vulnerability, I tried disabling it on the client side on my various systems and browser. On OSX, I managed to do it for Firefox and Chrome but not for Safari. On iOS I didn't manage at all.
Any clue on how it can be done?
FWIW:
- Disabling SSLv3 in Firefox:
Open about:config, find security.tls.version.min and set the value to 1. Then restart your browser to drop any open SSL connections.
- Disabling SSLv3 in Chrome:
Launch Chrome using an AppleScript that contains the following
do shell script "open -a /Applications/Google\\ Chrome.app --args --ssl-version-min=tls1"
- Checking client-side vulnerability:
https://www.poodletest.com/
- Checking server-side vulnerability:
http://www.poodlebleed.com
Cheers,
AlexApple posted the following updates that include a fix for the SSLv3 "Poodle" issue:
Yosemite 10.10
Security Update 2014-005 Mavericks
Security Update 2014-005 Mountain Lion
as well as updates for all currently supported Servers (4.0, 3.2.2, 2.2.5)
All of them contain the following:
Secure Transport
Impact: An attacker may be able to decrypt data protected by SSL
Description: There are known attacks on the confidentiality of SSL
3.0 when a cipher suite uses a block cipher in CBC mode. An attacker
could force the use of SSL 3.0, even when the server would support a
better TLS version, by blocking TLS 1.0 and higher connection
attempts. This issue was addressed by disabling CBC cipher suites
when TLS connection attempts fail.
CVE-ID
CVE-2014-3566 : Bodo Moeller, Thai Duong, and Krzysztof Kotowicz of
Google Security Team
It would appear that your browsers will show "maybe vulnerable" on the poodletest site, so my guess is that OS X will prevent all apps from using SSLv3 even if they would otherwise be capable of doing so. This will protect other apps, such as e-mail clients that are also normally able to use SSLv3. -
Disabled Java-now Safari won't display pages.......
I really thought that I was doing a good thing by disabling Java because of security concerns. Well, apparently it wasn't a good thing and now I don't know how to restore Safari to how it was before I did something so stupid! So I am hoping someone can tell me how to fix this problem. Preferences won't open up or I could change the setting. No windows open up. Safari comes up but that's it. Help! Judy
Safari looks like it's starting up and the menu bar items are there but my homepage doesn't display. I can select Preferences but there again, nothing is displayed. System Preferences are the same way. I did what one poster suggested, installed the combo update for 10.5.7. I am now repairing permissions. I did manage to get Mail to open and display the message window and got 2 messages and tried to reply to one. Got a few words typed and then nothing. The cursor was blinking but no letters appeared. So I quit that app. I just deleted the plist file you suggested. Restarted Safari-no go. I think it made a musical intro though when it started up-I think that that is second since this whole problem started that I heard music and I think it was when I deleted a plist for Safari before.....Anyway, that's where I am at right now. I am using Firefox. Using MobileMe to access emails. And not accessing the System Prefs at all. Things aren't looking good. Judy

Yahoo has disabled Autocomplete for Safari
For anyone having problems using Yahoo email and finding that the Autocomplete function of their Address book does not work anymore:
A Yahoo Tech confirmed to me that they have temporarily disabled JUST that feature for all Safari users until they figure out how to implement it properly.
Apparently it works fine on some versions of Safari and not on others, so they just disabled it entirely for the moment.
I was running around in circles trying to figure this out because my MOTHER uses Yahoo mail and was having problems. It turns out the problem is NOT Apple, but Yahoo.
I was able to change the User Agent of Safari and it worked fine, but that is under the hidden DeBug menu and not really an option for most people.
Oddly enough the Autocomplete feature still works on Safari 2.0.3 under 10.4.7 but not under any other version I can see. Oh well.
For anyone interested, the CAMINO browser will work with Yahoo Mail's Autocomplete feature.
Also- Yahoo's "Nicknames" feature has apparently been disabled for EVERYONE (Mac & Windows). Nicknames are different than Autocomplete.
It was nice to hear that they are not just ignoring Safari users and that they are actively working to solve this (small) problem.<pre>Also- Yahoo's "Nicknames" feature has apparently been disabled for EVERYONE (Mac & Windows). Nicknames are different than Autocomplete.</pre>
Thanks for that piece of information. Does Yahoo have a page somewhere explaining this stuff?

Seems like none of the Discussions feeds will open in Safari 4.0.4/OS X 10.6.3 right now - for a couple of days. It's a shame since I like to bookmark the top-level RSS and see what the most recent posts are overall.
For example:
feed://discussions.apple.com/rss/rssmessages.jspa?categoryID=1
gives me the error:
Safari can’t open the page “feed://discussions.apple.com/rss/rssmessages.jspa?categoryID=1”. The error is: “The operation couldn’t be completed. No such file or directory” (NSPOSIXErrorDomain:2)
The feed does open correctly within Mail.
