"Disable Screen Saver" hot corner no longer prevents Display Sleep

I am not sure whether it started only after I upgraded to 10.5.7, but I certainly have this very annoying issue right now.
I have "Disable Screen Saver" assigned to the top right "hot corner". Some time ago I could place my mouse pointer there in order to prevent activating of "Display Sleep" (as well as gradually dimming before jumping into bed).
It no longer works. I have my pointer in the right corner, and nevertheless the display first dims, then goes to sleep.
Is this only my problem? Any ideas how to fix it? Thanks!

Anybody?

  • How to disable screen saver altogether ?

I'd like to disable screen saver so that my screen goes black during non use (especially at night). Just don't seem to find the right place to do just that
    Thanks

Go to System Preferences > Energy Saver and under the Sleep tab is the selection for putting the display to sleep when the computer has been inactive for selected period of time.
If you select the screen saver to run after 15 minutes, you can select 1hr to put the display to sleep as an example.

my desktop and screen saver option is no longer available in the system preferences. meaning it is no longer listed. how would i go about getting it back?

If you used system cache cleaning software it can mess up Apple software.  Stop using such software.  Remove Mackeeper if present using these directions:
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3691
If you started typing something in the search field of the System Preferences, it might be hiding.   Quit and reopen System Preferences to be sure it isn't hiding because it is searching for another panel.
Lastly, if none of the above apply, go to your hard drive -> System -> Library -> PreferencesPanes folder and see if it is hiding there.  If it isn't, get your 10.5 installer disc that installed 10.5 on your Mac, and restore it with http://www.charlessoft.com/ 's Pacifist, and then run the 10.5.8 combo update to ensure the version matches the operating system.

  • With remote management enabled the screen saver never kicks in, the monitor never sleeps

The title says it all. With remote management enabled the screen saver never kicks in, the monitor never sleeps. This is with an iMac. So I have to leave remote management off, which means instead of using remote desktop I have to manage the machine with TeamViewer. Life is still good, but this seems like a bug, and there's a few things remote desktop does that TeamViewer can't.

You should use a specialized tool such as TextWrangler, the Property List Editor, or the defaults command in the Terminal to view and change plist files; those created with recent software are encoded so that a regular text editor will not properly parse them.

  • 10.6.5 Screen Saver Expose Corner Broken

Ever since I installed the 10.6.5 update I can no longer use a screen corner to activate the screen saver. Whenever I try I get "You are opening the application 'ScreenSaverEngine' for the first time. Are you sure you want to open this application?"
Clicking Open makes no difference. I am still prompted every time I try to use the screen corner. I have removed the screen corner setting and re-added it with no improvement, same thing happens every time.
I tried launching the ScreenSaverEngine directly and it opened fine but made no difference with the screen corner problem. Testing the screen saver from the preference pane also makes no difference.
    Anyone have any suggestions?

I am having this same issue, and it is often rectified by a reboot. Dimaxum, I would try dragging the plist file to the desktop and rebooting, but since rebooting often fixes the issue temporarily, it would be difficult to tell if it was actually a remedy to the problem.
I tried running the suggested sudo command, but it didn't fix my problem. Perhaps there is another way, but I agree that this is a bug that Apple should fix. Interesting that directly launching the app doesn't cause any problems, it must be something specifically related to how Exposé launches the app.

  • Disable screen saver - Mac mini with OS X version 10.6.4

I am trying to disable the screen saver on a Mac Mini with Mac OS X version 10.6.4.
I have tried to disable it from System Preferences setting it to "never" and I have tried as well using the "defaults" command to set the idleTime in com.apple.screensaver to 0. Unfortunately, the screen saver starts after 20 minutes.
I have checked and there is no process with a name similar to screen saver.
Thank you in advance for your help,
    Antonio

      Hi dkaramit,
Thank you for your answer. The energy settings are set to never. I checked it as well with pmset -g. In addition, the screen saver in the com.apple.screensaver plist file appears after 20 minutes of inactivity.

  • Screensaver hot corner no longer working in 10.9.1

    Upgraded to 10.9.1 from 10.9
Moved my moise pointer into the hot corner to activate the screensaver and it did not work.
    I tried:
    A different screensaver.
    Activating a different corner
Changing the option on the corner to "Mission Control" (which worked) then back to Activate ScreenSaver and it did not work.
Turning the corner to "-", setting it. Then going back in and setting it back to the screensaver. It did not work.

    Back up all data.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.dock.plist
Right-click or control-click the line and select
Services ▹ Reveal in Finder (or just Reveal)
from the contextual menu.* A folder should open with an item selected. Move the selected item to the Desktop, leaving the window open. Log out, log back in, and test. If there's no change, quit again and put the item you moved back where it was, overwriting the one that may have been created in its place. Otherwise, delete the item you moved. If possible, restore it from a backup that predates the problem.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination  command-C. In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar, paste into the box that opens (command-V). You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.

  • Screen Saver with Flickr no longer working

I don't really enjoy seeing the same nature photos during the screen saver and I enjoy entering search terms via Flickr. This used to work. Now after 2-3 of the Flickr photos the screen saver reverts right back to the default nature photos, so I'm stuck seeing that polar bear swimming underwater and that flock of pink flamingos.

If I go the xmlpserver page I get the standard HTTP 404 Not Found Page.
I am using OC4J and it is running.
This is all on my laptop.

  • Screen saver  : loading photos too long with aperture 3.3.2

    Hi,
I've upgraded to mountain lion today and I've discovered an issue.
Screen saver does not display my aperture library (though I can select the aperture library and see clearly the photos inside)
It says 'loading photos' with a black screen and nothing more happen.
When I select a folder with small amount of photos (less than 10 for exemple), it finally works.
But I like to have my whole library targeted for screen saver.
I add that it was perfectly working before the upgrade, and Aperture was already in 3.3.2 before mountain lion upgrade.
Lion screen saver was working perfectly with my all aperture library and now it's a disaster.
Moreover, the new slideshows added in the screensaver are worse than the one with Lion. I particularly appreciated the "Polaroid" pictures with the date below.
Now I cannot have it anymore..
    So I have two questions ;
    1) Is there a way to speed up the loading of photos for the slideshows of screen saver ? A cache file ?
    2) Can I get back the previous screen saver of Lion ("polaroid" pictures with date below)
thanks a lot for your help
    I'm a newbie in Mac

    Hi Earnie,
Yes indeed I do have different versions for some of them but each version bears a different Version Name. Though I guess the Master Name being unique, it might be causing the trouble... That should not matter anyway and hopefully will be solved in a next update.
Thanks for the tip. I will investigate further and check all my photos.
    Cheers

  • How to disable screen saver when watchin videos in full screen in firefox??

This happens only with Firefox, other browsers play videos normally and uninterrupted. I want to keep my window default screen saver but not when watching in full screen mode.

The Flash Player plugin normally should block the system from going to sleep, reducing display brightness, or going to screen saver when you use its full screen mode. It's strange that you have this issue with Flash.
There are some workarounds, like using an add-on or external program that simulates moving your mouse, but those really shouldn't be necessary.
    VLC, I don't know.
By the way, have you shut down and restarted Windows since this problem first occurred? Just in case some shared component of Windows has crashed.

  • Annoying Screen saver/Login window/Apple LED Cinema Display Bug

    Hi all,
After upgrading to 10.6.4 I have a really annoying problem.
First the relevant setup information: MacBook Pro 17 inch (2009 model), 8 GB RAM, 10.6.4, Screen saver activates after a few minutes with password protection and a few minutes thereafter the screen is put to sleep.
Here is what happens: whenever I have an external Apple LED Cinema Display connected and I move the mouse while the screensaver is activated, I am able to type my login and password, but after that in just a matter of seconds (usually 3-4 seconds) the both screens become blue and all my programs close and Mac OS X jumps to the login screen (all data that was not saved is gone, all open windows also gone). This bug does NOT happen if the Apple LED Cinema Display is not connected.
    Anyone else experiencing this issue?
    Best Regards,
    Michael

Hello guys, thank you for answering.
Yes, the USB cable is plugged.
At the moment I'm avoiding to flash the VRAM. But I found out that restarting my system gives me access to the controls again. It does randomly stop working. Sometimes I can adjust the cinema display settings but not the macbook screen settings. In my opinion it is definitely a bug.
There is any way to submit a bug somewhere?

  • Can I use Hot Corners to make the display sleep immediately?

I have Hot Corners set up so that the screen-saver kicks in as soon as I move the mouse to the top-right corner. However, I'd really like to be able to make the display sleep immediately, rather than show the screen-saver first... can I do that? There doesn't seem to be a Hot Corners option for "Display sleep".

    Hi Garth
That can be set using expose.
Open up preferences /dashboard & expose.
Click on one of the buttons to set your option to start screen saver by choosing the corner you wish to use.

Sorry, misread your message the first time. Can't be done with hot corners.

  • Visualizer won't prevent display sleep?

I've seen other posts related to this but haven't found the exact issue, so here goes (and thanks in advance for your insights):
Instead of using appleTV, I hardwired my nice, huge sony tv to my macpro with a DVI-to-HDMI cable.  I did this because I like to have the iTunes visualizer running during parties and such (because, APPLE, the ATV won't freaking do it!)
The problem is that the iTunes visualizer apparently doesn't count as "activity," and the displays (including my tv) go to sleep after the interval that I've set in system preferences for display sleep.
I know that I can fix this by simply changing my system preferences when I intend to use my TV in this way, and I know that this isn't hard to do.  But I want to make sure that there isn't an option that I've missed.
Is there a way to tell the OS, one time and permanently, not to put the display(s) to sleep if the visualizer is running?
    Thanks again y'all!

The same thing happens on both my MacBook Pro (15", late 2011) and Mac Mini running Mavericks. After the screen saver appears, the computer's display won't sleep if the Playstation DualShock 3 controller is either plugged in (via USB) or connected via Bluetooth.
I don't know if this has anything to do with it, but I noticed that my controller is sending a bunch of data that's not related to any physical button or axis.

  • Hot Corners not disabling screen saver

Hello folks, Im trying to watch movies and using hot corners to keep my ss from coming on but its not working. Tried disabling/enabling them, all four corners, mouse cursor in different spots but all the same result - ss keeps coming on! Gahh! Any tips or troubleshooting methods? Thanks.

    Hi again, Aaron —
OK, let's try some troubleshooting steps to solve your Exposé problem (that's the name of the OS X feature that, among other things, provides the "hot-corners" functionality).
        (1) Please note that some Dashboard widgets have been reported to exhibit incompatibilities with Exposé. You may want to check on this — and update to later versions or disable any suspect Widgets.
        (2) When you have "a lot of things like this" that aren't working as expected, it's usually very helpful to isolate what may be vs. what definitely isn't contributing to the behavior(s). One way to do this is to set up a temporary "test" user account with administrative privileges. (As always, be sure to remember the password!) Then log-in as this user, and take whatever steps are necessary to determine whether the problematic behavior(s) persist. If they do, the problem is "systemic" ; is they go away, the problem is apparently restricted to your user account. Apple's KnowledgeBase Article 25398 — Mac OS X: How to troubleshoot a software issue (also linked above) explains troubleshooting steps to take from there.
For what's next, I'll presume this problem is associated with your user account:
        (3) Exposé, the Dock, and Dashboard are closely associated functions. Because Exposé's preferences are stored along with the Dock's, one step that will frequently help resolve its problems is to remove the com.apple.dock.plist file from your ~/Library/Preferences/ folder (the ~e and / "path" nomenclature are defined here) — either temporarily to the Desktop or to the Trash, and then restart.
Please note that this will refresh all the associated preferences to their original, "default" values — so you will have to reconfigure your Dock & Exposé preferences. (You may want to take a screenshot of the Dock's current configuration first.)
There are other potential troubleshooting steps to try if these aren't successful. Please post back to apprise us of your progress — and to discuss this further, if it remains unresolved.
    Good luck!
    Dean
