Disable security chip in bios

Hi
What can be the consequences if I disable the security chip in bios.
My T60 won't pass the startup fas called "Verifying status for the integrated security circuit" (sorry, free translation from Swedish to English). The fingerprint reader shows up for bios and HDD but not the next step.
The cause might be that the last thing I did was installing a new firewall without forwarding any application.
I have, in safe mode, removed the program (with Revo Uninstaller, CCleaner etc). MSconfig has no trace of it but still nothing solve the problem.
Please, can anyone give me some advices how to do?

I can tell you that mine is disabled, as I have no use for it.
As for what difference it makes on your system will depend on exactly how you used it. I'm not anything close to an expert on the security chip, as I've never enabled on on any of my thinkpads, so hopefully another member will post some more useful info.

T61 will not activate Security Chip to run Password Manager

I have a T61 running XP SP3. My PC is just out of warrenty so I can't contact them about support. I recently had a problem with my battery and it basically took down my intire computer and it wouldn't boot. So I have a slightly newer T61 in my office I put my hard drive into it and booted to use until I could get mine back to working. All was well till I switched back to my original PC and it started saying that my Security Chip needed to be activated in order to you the security features on the PC. When I clicked to activated it it said it needed to reboot....so after reboot, it came back up again. I have tried this many many times and can't get it to activate. I have tried making the chip all 3 possible states (Active, Inactive and Disabled) and nothing seems to work. I also tried clearing the chip per some instructions I found on forums. This didn't work. The last thing I tried was to restore to factory install using the Lenovo factory restore. This all went well, but as soon as everything got installed I started getting the Active Security Chip message after boot.
I don't really care about anything the chip does except the Password management feature. I have never used the other features mentoned about locking bios and the harddrive. Today I tried telling the Message to not display the message again. It doesn't come up now when I reboot, but neither does the PW manager. Also I can't get the message or security center to come back up when I launch it from the Lenovo Panel.
I have seen several posts simillar to this, but they all recommended things I have tried, or didn't have responses.
I am game to try almost anything at this point????

Welcome to the Lenovo forum
I would hazard a guess that Client Security Solution was installed while your security chip was active, and is expecting to use it. And since it appears that your system is having some problem with its security chip, Client Secuity Solution doesn't work right.
Client Security Solution (CSS) does not require the security chip in order to operate. It's been awhile since I used it, but if you start the CSS main interface, I think there is a configuration option to tell it to use the security chip or not. If you can find that configuration option, try telling CSS to NOT use the security chip, and then reboot, press F1, and disable the security chip in BIOS setup.
If the above doesn't fix your problem (or if I'm mis-remembering about being able to change the CSS security chip option after it's installed), you could try removing CSS and then re-installing CSS after you've disabled the security chip in BIOS setup.
There may be a better / easier solution... you might want to wait a bit to see if someone with more CSS experience has better ideas.

Security Chip Incompatible with XP SP3 !

Just talked to Lenovo support about my problem. They told me that my T60 security chip was incompatible with XP SP3 and the fix was to not load SP3. Hard to believe that is their "solution" !!!
In any even, BEWARE ! Be sure to set a back up / restore point before installing XP SP3. You will likely need it.
If anyone has a solution, I sure would like to know about it. Per the previous post, Inactivating or disabling the security chip from bios will not prevent the hang. Only restoring the system to pre-SP3 will let the machine boot.

I have a Treo 680 and I spent about an hour on the phone at my computer with tech support from Palm trying to resolve this and when it
was all said and done I still can not get my calendar and contacts to sync. Tech support told me that I have a corrupted database and that
there is problems with the SP3 and the hot sync manager. They told me they were working on it but couldn't give a timeframe for when
it would be fixed. I can not remove SP3 from my computer. I have enough issues already with security without adding to it. Palm needs
to fix this problem right away.

T420 BIOS - "Clear Security Chip" Option missing

Hello,
we got several T420 with different BIOS versions (from 1.30 to 1.40)
On 95% of them the "Clear Security Chip" Option is available @ BIOS
but on some of them the option is missing.
Is there an easy explanation for this mistery?

The clear security chip option is only in BIOS after a cold boot.
It won't be there after a warm boot.
This is for security reasons.

X60 Security chip hang up

I have an X60 that hangs at the "checking security chip" advisory that comes up during a boot up -either a cold or restart boot up. If I go in to the BIOS and disable the security chip.. After about 30 seconds of seeing the "Checking the security chip" banner- I will get a notice something to the effect that the chip is disabled or a problem with the security chip driver.. but instead of hanging up forever, I can at least acknowledge the warning and get my X60 to boot. Anyone have an idea what is going on ? and a fix?

How are you logging into the system? Are you using the Fingerprint to login or the password in Client Security Solution (CSS)? Remember that Client Security Solution controls your settings for the Password Manager (Security settings for Fingerprint reader data are controlled by CSS also)
You can go to Start -> All Programs -> ThinkVantage (or Lenovo Care) -> Client Security Solution
If you have CSS version 8, you should see a Menu Bar at the top.. You can click on Advanced , then Reset - this will allow you to clear all password data from the Password Manager.
In addition to the "Reset" option, you also have the ability to "Manage" your settings. Use this to make changes to way you log into Windows at boot. You should have 5 options listed under "Manage". This also allows you to decide whether or not to use the Fingerprint when signing on.
If you are trying to clear you fingerprint data, that can be done from BIOS
F1 -> Security -> Fingerprint -> Erase Internal Fingerprint Data -> "Yes" to confirm.

T60 Startup stuck on "checking embedded security chip"--cannot start after factory restore

You may have read my post a week ago. Lenovo sent me R&R disks and I have restored machine to factory settings. Added back MS Outlook, Office, etc. Things worked fine, programs, files, internet...then I downloaded some MS files (mainly security patches and SP3). Log out, log back in and here I am stuck at "checking embedded security chip". Reloaded factory settings again, same problem.
Should I reload again and before shutting down, disable client security (I have McAfee suite running and only use firefox now, not explorer)? Can anyone thing of another way to disable the security chip checking process (disabling it or inactvating it in BIOS doesn't work--it still "looks" for it).
Any other ideas?

T60 unresponsive security chip

Hello all,
I've found myself in a bit of a predicament that I'm hoping somebody else has experienced or can otherwise help me with and I would greatly appreciate any help or advice offered. Yesterday afternoon I did some routine windows updates (XP) and upon rebooting my computer just hangs at "checking the status of the embedded security chip". I have yet to find any way to get it to continue beyond this point. I have tried disabling all of the various passwords and options in BIOS as well as clearing the security chip and disabling it. At this point I have a predesktop password that the system will accept and it will allow me to enter the thinkvantage recovery area though sporadically it asks me for a password to get in and I have to remove the battery and hold the power button before replacing the battery and booting in order to get it to reset. The only thing I can think of is that the security chip has just gone completely haywire and I can't quite figure out where to go from here. Thankfully, all of my important documents and files are backed up separately so there is no concern there. That being said anybody have any ideas? I'm at my wits end so any advice is welcome.
I think I've described everything I can remember but feel free to ask questions and we'll see if there is anything I left out.

T60 won't boot, hangs on "Checking the status of the embedded security chip..."

My T60 with embedded security chip and finger print reader, running Windows XP, has just recently developed this problem. It never finishes booting. I've changed the BIOS setting to completely disable the security chip, yet this condition still persists. Occurs running on battery power or cord; occurs when in a docking station or not. Occurs when in diagnotics boot mode or quick boot mode.
I've searched the Lenovo support site and this forum for similar symptoms and help, but couldn't seem to find any.
Anyone know how to get around this problem?

My thrive 10.1 has the same problem and hung in leading innovation screen. Do you find a way to solve this issue yet? If you know please help me to crack this problem. I did the factory hard reset, but it didn't work. I appreciate a lot if you or any one have any solution to solve it.

T431s - 5 beeps, pause, 5 beeps on restart - boots fine - security chip

Finally received a T431s (win 8 pro) but it's beeping right out of the box. Seems to only beep from a warm reboot. Starting from cold (completely off) doesn't beep.
Disabling the security chip seems to resovle the beeps, but then I can't use the fingerprint reader or bitlocker. Setting it to inactive seems to eventually turn it to active by itself (after a restart) resulting in beeps again. Tried clearing the TPM but results in the same beeps...
Pretty annoyed that it's having issues right out of the box. Anyone else with a T431s having the same issue?
Additionally, I can't seem to access the bios from a cold start no matter how fast I press the F1 key, or what keys I press. It refuses to get interrupted. The only way I can access the bios is allowing the system to come up, restart, and then interrupt boot.

[SOLVED] Disable Secure Boot on Asus Zenbook UX32A

Hi all, I hope I have posted in the right section, please move it otherwise.
I'm trying to install Arch on an Asus Zenbook, but I cannot boot installation media (an USB stick, in this case), as it requires the EFI binary to be signed, and only simple way out is to disable Secure Boot.
Unfortunately I'm not able to disable it from UEFI interface, as it is grayed out. Solutions I've found searching the Web suggested to set a password to BIOS, but even this way I wasn't able to enable it.
Notebook came with Windows 8 built in, and I upgraded BIOS to 214 version.

Details of the user interface vary greatly from one computer to another. I've got some notes on disabling Secure Boot on an ASUS P8H77-I motherboard here, but they may not apply to your notebook, or there may be an extra trick. Along the latter lines, look for "fast boot" and "CSM" options and try fiddling with them to see if the Secure Boot option becomes alterable.

What to do with the message: Activating embedded security chip

Hello,
I've been using a dc7800 for a couple of months without problems, running Windows 7. As the machine had only 1GB RAM, i added two modules of 1GB each last week. Apparently one of the modules is faulty, as the pc would not boot with both modules inserted.
I swapped the modules a couple of times to find out which one was giving the culprit - i removed power from the pc, changed the modules and powered it on again to see if it would boot ok now.
Now, after a few times the message "Activating embedded security chip" appeared on screen every time i powered on the pc. The message stayed for a couple of seconds, then the pc restarted and the message reappeared and so on.
Pressing F10 during boot resulted in a "301 Keyboard error message" together with the "Activating embedded security chip" message, again with a restart after a few seconds.
In an attempt to solve the problem i reset the cmos by pressing the internal switch for 5 seconds. Since then, after powering up the pc i only see "F1 Accept" and "F2 Cancel" on the screen, but keyboard input is not recognized.
Again, the pc restarts after a few seconds.
I upgraded the Bios to v1.32 some time ago, but i have never touched the TPM settings in the bios.
Any suggestion to solve this annoying problem is much appreciated!

Check virus of external hard drive (in a safe way) and TPM security chip request

Context, complain:
I had few trouble with my new lenovo R61. But today everything is alright, downgrade to xp ok, driver graphic card ok, partitioning ok. Westerday I was in the same point with Avast anti virus installed, comodo firewall install. I decide to install spybot and check an external hard drive. I allowed the choice of spybot to do something with some "dangerous files". After this point I was not allowed to do nothing in the computor. "your not allowed to shut down the computer". "your not allowed to...contact admin". "your not allowed"....
I forced the restart, press blue, recovered the system and decide to accept the norton help, so I have norton install.
Request1:
I want to check my external I drive with any risk for the system, what can I do, I'm I in risk as I plug in?
Request2:
Second small problem, when I try to enrolled my finger, it ask me for TPM code that I do not have. Is it safe to go in the bios and clear security chip, I see some warning in the doc.

I've resolve both problem yesterday evening,
My computer is now ready to operate and my hard drive looks clean now (that's what says norton and sophos anti-virus). I hope that is true. That's was quiet stressfull to have a virus attack after 1 day. Somebody suggest me that's maybe I don't restart before using Spybot creating a big mess in the registry.... I'll never now.
But now ALL GOOD YEAH

Security chip on T60

Hello everybody,
My problem on a T60 model 2007, type 77g is that while I have the security hip enabled in BIOS I can not activate that from the IBM Embedded Scurity Subsytem.
As I can not activate that due to an unexplained error I can not remove the IBM Embedded Scurity Subsytem software either. Is this a catastophy or what?
Do have anybody any experience on this particular issue? Prior to this the motherboard has been changed and ithink that the problem might be there.

This can be done starting with T400/T500 series, in fact any BIOS setting can be changed from within Windows, see here:

For security chip, it can be activated by using the SetConfig.vbs script as follows: "cscript.exe SetConfig.vbs SecurityChip Active". Then reboot twice (a technical glitch). You will not have to perform the manual step of pressing F9/F10 or go into BIOS F1 setup when you use this method.
For older systems like T60/T61, we also have a method to activate the TPM in a scripted way. But it is undocumented, and more complicated. If you would like to find out more, please contact me directly. I am happy to help.

T60 not getting past "Checking embedded security chip

Of course my warenty ran out two months ago but this started last week. It started as Firefox crashing and Act!2005 not starting the SQLSERVER service. I ran all kinds of anti-virus and malware finders to no avail.
Now, during boot up process, it gets stuck and will not proceed past "Checking embedded security chip" during bootup.
I have researched the issue and tried several things like deactivating the chip and fingerrpint in BIOS but nothing seems to work. At one point I was able to get to a WINDOWS login where you have to hit CTL-ALT-DELETE and it came up with my user name. I entered the password I use during a normal login but it failed. I tried my user name@LENOVO-<my computer number> and that did not work either.
I am at the point of backing up through resue/recovery then burning a factory install disk and starting over but I REALLY(!!!) don't want to have to do that.
Any ideas are very much appreciated!
My machine is a T60 type 8744 purchased in January 2007.

Z61p - Clear security Chip settings

How do I clear the security Chip settings on my Z61p? I have looked in Bios and Client Security but can not see a 'Clear' option?

This options are normally hidden by the Z series BIOS - to activate this options:
During Booting (after a full power off) press rapidly ESC + F1 or. F2 (I don't remember this at te moment it's either F1 or F2 - try it) !
After entering The BIOS Setup There is an additional option in the security Menu to clear the TPM and the Fingerprint Data !
