Disable Software Update?

Is it possible? Is there a way (other than the preferences option) that i can hide that from users on their computer? I have about 50 computer and i dont want users to be able to make software update..
Not an easy one? hehe

By default, only an administrator can run Software Update. So, taking away administrative rights would prevent them from running it. However, if you were to take away admin from your users, they wouldn't be able to, for example, install some software packages.
Many systems administrators would argue that this is a good thing.
TeenTitan's idea is a good one, too -- using your own repository. A combination of the two, plus one more, is how I manage two different OSX environments: limit who gets administrative access, use a local repository, and clear business rules that people who do have admin rights must do so responsibly.
Not sure how to hide it altogether though. A crafty user can still run it from the terminal; though they'll still need administrative access to do so:
sudo softwareupdate -ia

• How can I disable software update in the settings of our company iPad?

Hi, Just need your help guys. How can I disable or hide the software update settings in our company's iPad? Our company don't want to update all the iPad fixed asset to our employee. Thanks.

There are two files that ought to change when you set your preference:
"/Users/yourname/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist"
"/Users/yourname/Library/Preferences/com.apple.scheduler.plist"
Try moving both of them out of the prefs folder. Then launch System Preferences and reset your preference to whatever you want (or uncheck the box altogether). See if that works. If it it does you will have to also reset your other System Prefs, since all will be returned to the default. If it doesn't do the trick, you can put the originals back and thus avoid the resetting.

• How to Disable Software Updates

One of my customers, a small school district, has an Xserver running OS X 10.6.6. All of the student and teacher MacBooks are also on this version. The district is deploying a program called DeepFreeze on the student laptops which will prevent them from saving any and all changes to the laptop. They have local administrative rights, but when the laptop is rebooted, it is like they never logged in. Therefore, Apple Software Updates are useless and really undesirable. They'll be downloading the same updates everyday. They can turn DeepFreeze off and run the updates, but this will not be on a scheduled basis. Is there a way through Workgroup Manager that I can disable the updates for the student group?

We turn that off in system preferences for each local account. I even build a DEFAULT template with it turned off. It works fine until we image the machine. Any new machine with that image, the Apple updates, Bluetooth are turned back on!!!
How do you keep them turned off after a restore? The original machine with the master image still works. they only turn back on after using the image of the master. Very annoying that every app on a mac has to search for updates all the time, then multiply that times a 1000 machines and a 15m internet connection. Do the math.
if anyone knows how to KEEP the settings after a restore, let me know.

• How do I disable software updates in iOS 6.1.3?

I wish software updates was a setting under the "Restrictions", the same was "Install Apps" is. Is there a way to disable the button/badge for software updates? I'm running iOS 6.1.3 right now and I don't want to change.

Once your device is already updated to iOS 7 you can no longer downgrade it from the previous version. If you have partially downloaded or it was just completed and prompting you to install if there will be option. Simply go to Gen>reset>erase all contents and settings. This will restore your device to its original factory settings activate your device using apple I'd via wifi or sync to iTunes using apple I'd.

• Disable Software Updates client component

I want to temporarily disable the Software Updates Agent component on a subset of 2012 R2 clients.
Based on the example of how to disble SWDist here: http://myitforum.com/cs2/blogs/rzander/archive/2008/08/11/sms-sccm-commandline.aspx and digging into WMI a little deeper I thought this might do the trick...
WMIC /namespace:\\root\ccm\policy\machine\requestedconfig path CCM_SoftwareUpdatesClientConfig CREATE ComponentName="SmsSoftwareUpdate",Enabled="false",LockSettings="TRUE",PolicySource="local",PolicyVersion="1.0"
,SiteSettingsKey="1" /NOINTERACTIVE
I kept getting "ERROR: Description = Not Found". Although the namespace and class exist, I'm wondering if I'm missing a required property or something changed with 2012 or ... ?.
If anyone has experience doing this you're help would be greatly appreciated!

Good catch, that explains it. After removing the LockSettings
property it worked. Thank you Peter and Jason for the quick responses!
To Disable SW Updates Agent Component:
WMIC /namespace:\\root\ccm\policy\machine\requestedconfig path CCM_SoftwareUpdatesClientConfig CREATE ComponentName="SmsSoftwareUpdate",Enabled="false",PolicySource="local",PolicyVersion="1.0" ,SiteSettingsKey="1" /NOINTERACTIVE
To Enable SW Update Agent component (reverse change):
WMIC /namespace:\\root\ccm\policy\machine\requestedconfig path CCM_SoftwareUpdatesClientConfig WHERE (ComponentName="SmsSoftwareUpdate" AND Enabled="false" AND PolicySource="local" AND PolicyVersion="1.0") delete /NOINTERACTIVE

• How to Disable SCCM Software Updates on Client Workstations

Hi,
I have enabled Software Updates for all clients, to create a baseline for reporting. The intent was to then disable Software Updates via. SCCM Client Settings, so that our clients could continue receiving updates from Microsoft until we were ready to deploy
updates to our clients.
After modifying the SCCM Client Settings, the Software Update Cycles/actions removed from the Configuration Manager Client on the workstations, however the local policy on the workstation remained configured (did not revert back to Non-Configured).
and the workstation is still looking to the SCCM for Windows Updates.
Using SCCM, how do I get the workstations back to Microsoft for Windows/Microsoft Updates?
TIA,
Bill

>I've read that you shouldn't mix SCCM and Group Policy for Windows Updates, when you're intending
to use SCCM.
Correct - if you are using Group Policy to manage the Windows Update settings, ConfigMgr will not be able to manage them. You're post implied you did not want to manage updates with ConfigMgr.
> not all of our workstations are on a domain; so that's not really a complete solution for
us.
ConfigMgr is designed to easily configure devices to update against ConfigMgr, not Microsoft Update, so there isn't just a check box for what you want.
Consider using ConfigMgr Compliance Settings to manage the registry keys for the Windows Update settings you are looking for on your devices.
I hope that helps,

• Stop Itunes checking for software updates

software update continually searches and prompts me to download.
how can i stop the "nagware". Every time i boot up and open iTunes - the nagware asks if i want itunes10 - i don't.
I've trashed the plist file and still the nagware persists.

try this:
iTunes > preferences > general
disable +check for new software updates automatically+.
you can also disable software update schedules completely via system preferences > software update > scheduled check.

• Software Update Running at 100%

I'm having an issue where the software update process is running at almost 100% CPU constantly...not only that but I have nine instances of software update running. When I try to "kill" any one of the processes, the other software update processes that are running start to consume more CPU.
I'm not the only person at my company who's having the problem. I have another person who's on a Power Book G4 running 10.4.9 who encountering the same problem. I started to notice this problem after upgrading to 10.4.9, so I think that may be part of the problem, but am not totally sure.
Anyone else experiencing this problem or know how to fix it?

Actually, I had already tried disabling software update and then killing the processes.
After some more research the I found that the process "softwareupdate" was not coming from Apple's Software update, it's a child process of aex-pluginmanager (Altiris Agent for Mac 6.2) After I killed the process for the Altiris agent and then killed the software update process the problem went away.
As I suspected this problem started right after we upgraded to 10.4.9, so I'm pretty sure that there's something that the Altiris Agent doesn't like about 10.4.9.

• Disable Software Notifcations

recently upgraded to Mountain Lion on my home MB Pro - like it better than Lion, mostly - except for the stupid "New Software Updates are available" popping into my screen every few minutes. There's no "Don't Ask Me Again" button, of course!
I obviously tried to disable software update in SYS PREFs, and looked in the Notifications Pref Pane, but there's nothing there about Software Updates.
Anyone know of some Terminal command to shut that little guy up until I'm ready to update when I want to?

Cheers
Me, either - and it's the only problem that I'm having with ML or any of my hardware. Sort of annoying - I just manually check in every other day - but it would be nice if it worked.

• IPod Touch 4gen disabled "The iPod Software update server could not be contacted" Make sure your network settings are correct and your network connection is active or try again later. Please help!

My daughter forgot her passcode. Her iPod Touch 4gen is disabled. I've tried everything I've read online. I get to the "Restore" part on iTunes and then I get the message, "The iPod Software update server could not be contacted. Make sure your network connections are correct and your network connection is active or try again later." How can this be so hard to do? Why isn't there a simpler solution. I live 2 hours from the nearest Apple store. Any advice you may offer would be very much appreciated.

Update Server
Try:
- Powering off and then back on your router.
- iTunes for Windows: iTunes cannot contact the iPhone, iPad, or iPod software update server
- Change the DNS to either Google's or Open DNS servers
Public DNS — Google Developers
OpenDNS IP Addresses
- Try on another computer/network
- Wait if it is an Apple problem

How do i restore my iphone when it has been disabled and cannot be restored through itunes because of the error message that says "The iphone software update server could not be contacted

Have you jailbroken this device? This will make the iPhone not talk to the Software Update Server (that signs and accepts software updates) please refer to the following link? Error 3194, Error 17, or "This device isn't eligible for the requested build"
The iPhone will talk to the software update servers, just need to change the host files, it's a simple process, sorry if you were confused about the wording in to top?

• How to disable software auto update from iPad

I was trying to download my favorite programs and iOS 7, but first I have to stop software auto update, how will I do this?

The actuall problem I'm trying to fix is the following error:

Another app is currently holding the yum lock; waiting for it to exit...
The other application is: PackageKit
Memory : 45 M RSS (357 MB VSZ)
Started: Tue Jul 10 09:27:04 2012 - 04:09 ago
State : Sleeping, pid: 2317

The above error can happen if you have an active Gnome session and e.g. connect as root using ssh session and try to use yum.
I may have found a way now to disable the automatic system updates, however, I don't know if this is the proper solution since I cannot find any information about it.
I modified */etc/PackageKit/PackageKit.conf* and changed:

DefaultBackend=yum -> DefaultBackend=nobackend

It requires a re-login of your Gnome X session to take affect.
Then Administration/Software update does no longer scan for updates, and apparently no longer lock yum at the system level. At least the problem seems to be fixed globally that way.
I will mark this question as answered, but any ideas are still welcome.
Thanks!
Btw, here is a link to previous older thread to disable it on a per-user basis:

• Lion disables system info and software update in about this mac

hey guys I have problem with lion when I reboot lion,
it disables system info and software update in "about this mac"
actually it says "this button is disabled because there is no system profiler application" or "this button is disabled because there is no software update application"
and also everytime when I reboot my computer it always changes default applicatons. for example
it changes from VLC player to quicktime, from Archive utility to textEdit and so on.
each time i got to reinstall "Afloat application" if i want to use it.
for making them ok I just need to open software updater from system pref. and the button becomes visible again.
it is same with the system info. I gotto search system profiler via spotlight search and I run, button becomes visible again.
for the archieve utility i got to go to coreservices and open Archieve utility then automatically it becomes default app for .zip files again.

Did you just install Lion? If so, you might need to try to reinstall as something got messed up.
Alfoat uses SIMBL which will break at just about every update. The reason you may have to keep installing Afloat is because the Resume feature of Lion is not compatible with SIMBL. See here: http://roaringapps.com/app:383
SIMBL is a low-level system hack and may be causing your problems.
