Disable tab groups

Is it possible to disable tab groups? Part of the reason I use tabs is to act as reminders to go back to look something over later, which tab groups suppresses. More importantly, it makes permanently closing tabs much too easy - I've already lost a hat full of tabs once, and although I'll be more careful next time, it's still too easy. It also seems to have disabled the 'Warn me when closing multiple tabs' feature for the last window (the warning pops up when multiple windows are closed, until the last one, when it just closes).

Hi Meghraj,
Yes, I came across this add-on else where - I have absolutely no issue with tabs, they are invaluable. My problem is just with the tab groups feature.

• What happened to my tabs and tab groups when I synced to a new computer?

I have spent the morning trying to sync Firefox. On my previous computer, I was running FF31, but not as a clean install--as an upgrade from FF28. In the Sync screen, I saw my email address and recovery key, so I thought I was good to go.
Turns out that that wasn't the case, and I needed to set up a new Sync account.
Here are the steps I took to get my data back:
1) I uninstalled FF31, reverted to 28, used my email address and recovery key, and got my information back.
2) Then I updated to FF31.
3) In FF31, I unlinked my computer, created a new Sync account, and logged in to sync my data.
However, I was unable to access my tab groups. And when I upgraded to FF31, my tab groups still weren't back.
I tried looking in "Tabs from Other Devices", and there were no other devices listed.
How can I get my tabs and tab groups back? I had literally dozens of hours of work-related research saved in these tabs. I have so many visited sites in my history that there's no way I'd be able to recreate all of them.
Please help--I'm desperate. I can't lose all of those tabs.

Hello,
Try Firefox Safe Mode to see if the problem goes away. Firefox Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode that turns off some settings, disables most add-ons (extensions and themes).
If Firefox is open, you can restart in Firefox Safe Mode from the Help menu:
*In Firefox 29.0 and above, click the menu button , click Help and select Restart with Add-ons Disabled.
*In previous Firefox versions, click on the Firefox button at the top left of the Firefox window and click on Help (or click on Help in the Menu bar, if you don't have a Firefox button) then click on Restart with Add-ons Disabled.
If Firefox is not running, you can start Firefox in Safe Mode as follows:
* On Windows: Hold the Shift key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
* On Mac: Hold the option key while starting Firefox.
* On Linux: Quit Firefox, go to your Terminal and run firefox -safe-mode <br>(you may need to specify the Firefox installation path e.g. /usr/lib/firefox)
When the Firefox Safe Mode window appears, select "Start in Safe Mode".<br>

If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode, your problem is probably caused by an extension, and you need to figure out which one. Please follow the Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems article to find the cause.
To exit Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.

• Tab Groups stopped working after update, Reinstall didn't help

Hi,
I updated to Firefox 26 and all my open Tabs were closed (I had FF set to keep all Tabs open)
Also Tab Groups don't work at all, pushing the button does nothing, same with ctrl+shift+E
Now I tried reinstalling it and it didn't fix anything, Same with disabling all Add-Ons or trying it in safe mode.
Any solutions?

Start Firefox in <u>Safe Mode</u> to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).
*Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window.
*https://support.mozilla.org/kb/Troubleshooting+extensions+and+themes
You can check for problems with the sessionstore.js and sessionstore.bak files in the Firefox profile folder that store session data.
Delete the sessionstore.js file and possible sessionstore-##.js files with a number and sessionstore.bak in the Firefox profile folder.
*Help > Troubleshooting Information > Profile Directory: Show Folder (Linux: Open Directory; Mac: Show in Finder)
*http://kb.mozillazine.org/Multiple_profile_files_created
Deleting sessionstore.js will cause App Tabs and Tab Groups and open and closed (undo) tabs to get lost and you will have to recreate them (make a note or bookmark them if possible).

• Panorama tab groups are not snapping to the edges of other groups

I upgraded to Firefox 5.0 and the tab groups in the Panorama view are no longer snapping to the edges of other groups like it did in 4.0.x. Is there a setting for this someplace?

The LDAP graph is responsible for showing the membership when viewing the user properties, an issue like this would indicate the graph is not auto updating. It normally builds when starting the CMS then every 15 minutes or so for new users (depending on system activity). It shouldn't lose any info (if it does this indicates a caching or communication problem with AD). There is a graphtimeout setting in the registry (search SAP notes) if this were disabled then it may cause similar symptoms.
I'm not aware of any bugs in 3.1 causing this behavior so you may need to open a case with support (authentication team) to help troubleshoot.
Regards,
Tim

• Tab Groups Missing

Using Firefox 3.6.18, I had several tab groups defined with several web pages in each group. I closed Firefox and my tab groups are gone.
The icon for tab groups is missing from the toolbar and I can't figure out how to get it back. Pressing CTRL+SHIFT+E does nothing. Under Tools, Options, General, the startup option is when Firefox starts, "Show my homepage" and it is greyed out. I have disabled all addons and the problems persist.
I don't understand why this feature just suddenly decided to stop working. I've decided to trust Tab Groups twice now and have been burned both times. This feature is a great feature, but if it is as unreliable as I've found it to be, I can't put my faith in using it.
How do I re-enable Tab Groups on my system, and how do I recover the groups that I had defined?

App (pinned) tabs and Tab Groups (Panorama) are stored as part of the session data [1] in the file sessionstore.js [2] in the Firefox profile folder [3].
Make sure that you do not use "Clear Recent History" to clear the "Browsing History" when Firefox is closed because that prevails and prevents Firefox from opening tabs from the previous session.

• Tab groups are lost on exit

I usually keep a lot of tabs open and run Tab Groups Manager and Tab Mix Plus to help manage them. I use Firefox's session management to reopen the tabs at start.
Today I started Firefox and all the tabs were in one group. After sorting them and then restarting and losing them again, I changed from Tab Groups Manager to Tab Group Bar, and got some old groups. Started sorting them, then restarted Firefox, and lost all groups again.
The tabs are still there, all of them, they just aren't sorted by groups. What can I do?
I'm using Firefox 31.0.

In order to uninstall a possibly unwanted extension, please do the following:

• Panorama forgets where I've filed tabs in tab groups

I've been noticing this since last fall in Firefox 4 nightlies.
Let's say I have around 60 tabs. I open Panarama, create some tab groups, then drag my tabs to the group where I want it to live.
Over the course of several Firefox restarts, my filing gets lost so that tabs go back to where they once were.
My profile was made last fall specifically for Firefox 4 -- I shouldn't have to create yet another one. I've deleted all my tab groups, then started from scratch to no avail. I've also tried disabling some add-ons like xmarks and session manager, which I imagine might impact Panorama.
Another approach would be to delete (in the file system) everything Firefox knows about Panorama so that record-keeping starts from scratch. How do I do that?

With the help of information from user, ptressel, in a post here about the existence of sessionstore.js when version 33 was released, I was able to easily recover my tabs and tab groups as follows:
# close Firefox and, perhaps, allow a few seconds (30s?) for any final closing of files;
# check to see if you have a sessionstore.js file in your profile folder, named like the one I documented in my original post above;
# if it is not timestamped prior to the discovery of your problem, open the sessionstore-backups folder;
# check if the recovery.js file is suitably timestamped and, if not, the recovery.bak.
# At this point, you are likely to find that none of them are prior to your problem occuring. If so, open your backups of this folder and go through steps 2-4 to find a file prior to your problem occuring.
# When you find a file, copy it to the root of your current profile folder and name it, "sessionstore.js"
# Open Firefox. Mine opened up as desired.
This is a Windows solution. Sorry I can't comment on other platforms, but I'd bet that as this is just a file copy and renaming, it is likely the same.
For Windows users, you may find you need to sign out and login as an administrator in order to access the backups. You need not logoff your standard account, but do have Firefox closed as described above.
Hope that helps.

• Tab Groups get jumbled on exit/restart

In FF3, I normally kept many windows open with many tabs each. With FF4 I decided to use Panorama / Tab Groups to organize things down to about 3 windows, two of which have about a half dozen named tab groups, each with about 2-10 tabs. If I restart FF (either by choosing Exit or using the Restart Firefox option after making a change to installed addons), many of the tabs that were in separate groups get moved into whichever group happens to be active, leaving my previously well-organized groups even more jumbled than they were in FF3; all the groups are still there, but the group that was active now has most of the tabs from the other groups, and the others are reduced to 1-4 tabs each.

In order to uninstall a possibly unwanted extension, please do the following:
#Click the menu button and choose Add-ons.
#Once the Add-on Manager has opened in a new tab, click the Extensions button on the left side of the window.

• Tab Groups disapeared

After using Tab Groups for a few days, today all groups are gone and the size of all the previous sessionstore.js files in my Firefox profile is 0 KB, so I can't restore a previous session.
I'm not sure whether this problem has to do with the use of this new feature of Tab Groups or with any other bug in Firefox 5.
Please, any help to recover my previous session will be appreciated.

I resolve this problem by disabling the addon named Abduction!
Check your addons :)

• FF29.0 crashes when loading with tab groups, loads fine without tab groups. WHY?

I have about 16-18 tab groups (at least I did in FF28.0). When updating to FF29.0, FF crashed EVERY time when trying to load. I finally did a fresh reinstall of FF29.0. After reinstalling my 18 add-ons, I ran Session Manager and loaded a session from before I had updated to 29.0. It had all my tab groups! WOW, it loaded. Well, it loaded ONCE. It never loaded again. Crashes every time. I have saved sessionstore.bak and sessonstore.js at various times. I copied one from before the crashes and FF29.0 works just fine. It just won't work with all/any of my tab groups. Crashes every time while loading. If it won't work with my saved tab groups, I will be forced to go back to FF28.0. That would not be progress.

Hi,
Some of your reports are not complete which means something is causing the reports to not be uploaded fully. Please follow the steps to ensure your crash reports can be uploaded and your crashes stop.
#Stop your antivirus and scanners temporarily
#Disable hardware acceleration. See Turn off HA
If that doesn't work then create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems.
See "Creating a profile":
*http://kb.mozillazine.org/Standard_diagnostic_-_Firefox#Profile_issues
If the new profile works then you can transfer some files from an existing profile to the new profile, but be careful not to copy corrupted files.

• The + to add a tab is mising and I have no access to the tab grouping. I just downloaded Firefox to a new Win 7 computer.

I am using a brand new Win 7 computer. I downloaded Firefox expecting it would be just the same as my previous version-8.?
I have no + on the tab bar to add a new tab.
Additionally, I loved the tabbed grouping and used it a lot. The set of boxes in the upper right corner to access the grouping page isn't even there.
To make sure I was getting Firefox without problems, I downloaded it from Firefox. The first time I downloaded it with Google Chrome. I am familiar with the games MS Wins plays with Mozilla.
Can you help me?

Hi jb4long,
You should try starting Firefox in Safe Mode by holding down shift while it is starting. Then you should choose to disable all the add-ons and use the default theme. That should put things back in order.
You might also want to take a look at this article on customizing the toolbar. You can put the Tab Groups icon in your toolbar or you can access it by hitting CTRL + SHIFT + E
