Disable USB boot
I work for a company where we have a few Macs set aside for people to use. Due to security risks, we would like to lock down the Macs from a USB boot (such as ubuntu). I am more Windows savvy than Mac. Is there such a place where I can lock each computer we have from booting up from a USB flash drive and force it to load OSX no matter what is plugged in?

Setting a firmware password on the computer will require someone to supply either it or a Mac OS X administrator password to change OSes. For greater security, use the Security pane of System Preferences to require an administrator password to unlock each secure pane and disable automatic login.
Disabling the USB boot completely isn't possible.

T500 BIOS disables USB booting (BUG)
I am reporting this here as a coutesey to the rest of the T500 users.
I boot from a lot of different USB media. I have about 6 different OS/s that I regularly boot from. I use them day-to-day for my development work.
I have been using my T500 for about 2-weeks now and I cant stand the TrackPad. Dont get me wrong, its not the Lenovo trackpad I hate. I hate ALL trackpads. Its just me and the way my palm rests on the laptop. I generally like to disable the trackpad in the BIOS of any laptop I use.
The BIOS control for disabling the Trackpad on the T500 also disables the ability to boot from a USB hard drive. I can recreate this at will. The BIOS version in question is 3.00 (6FET70WW), 2009-04-17.Hi lemmingman,
Welcome to the Lenovo forum
Thank you for reporting this apparent BIOS bug. If anyone else can confirm they have the same trouble, could you please post:
1) Your 7-digit machine type XXXX-YYY from label on bottom, or in BIOS Setup screen when you press F1 at boot. (Please don't post your serial number, which appears in the same locations.)
2) Your BIOS version, from the same BIOS Setup screen.
Thanks!

I really need Linux in my laptop. Could anybody help ASAP.
Solved!
Go to Solution.This guide is not System Specific and not all of the option may show inside a certain BIOS version, Just Make sure that all optionlisted here that is available on a Lenovo BIOS is set as follows.
Ideacentre BIOS Menu is F1 and F2 for Ideapad.
Under Exit TAB
OS Optimization
OS Optimized
For the two options above: Should be set as Disabled or Other OS
Under Boot Tab / Start up Tab
Boot Mode Should be set to Legacy
Boot Priority Should be set to Legacy First
UEFI Boot should be set to Disabled
Quick Boot should be Disabled
StartUp device Menu prompt should be Disabled
Quick Boot Should be Disabled
USB Boot should be Enabled
Secure boot Should be Disabled
Once everything are Set, make sure to save all changed by hitting F10 and Enter for Yes
After Hitting enter It will Restart and You will have to keep on tapping F12
this should pull up the Boot Menu letting you select where to boot.
If not succesful pulling up the boot menu after the restart, Power Drain the System and turn it on while hitting F12 Again.

[SOLVED]How to disable USB autosuspend?
Hello!
A long time ago I installed Arch on my notebook and configured it's power saving using laptop-mode-tools. I also installed pm-utils for suspend/hibernate. USB autosuspend worked correctly - on battery every device (including mouse) was suspending and no autosuspend at all on AC. Some time ago, I don't remember when exactly, it stopped working. Now, no matter what, my mouse turns off after 2 seconds.
Here is what I did:
1. Checked my laptop-mode-tools configuration (removed comments for brevity):
cat /etc/laptop-mode/conf.d/usb-autosuspend.conf
DEBUG=0
CONTROL_USB_AUTOSUSPEND="auto"
AUTOSUSPEND_USE_WHITELIST=0
AUTOSUSPEND_USBID_BLACKLIST=""
AUTOSUSPEND_USBTYPE_BLACKLIST=""
AUTOSUSPEND_USBID_WHITELIST=""
AUTOSUSPEND_USBTYPE_WHITELIST=""
BATT_SUSPEND_USB=1
LM_AC_SUSPEND_USB=0
NOLM_AC_SUSPEND_USB=0
AUTOSUSPEND_TIMEOUT=2
So far looks good.
2. According to wiki, pm-utils might conflict with laptop-mode-tools. So I created a dummy file in /etc/pm/power.d for each of the scripts from /usr/lib/pm-utils/power.d . For the moment I don't care if I disabled too much. I just hope laptop-mode-tools covers all powersaving features.
ls -l /etc/pm/power.d
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 0 08-08 19:58 hal-cd-polling
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 0 08-08 19:58 intel-audio-powersave

ls -l /usr/lib/pm-utils/power.d
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 1316 2013-05-30 hal-cd-polling*
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 870 2013-05-30 intel-audio-powersave*

Still no luck.
3. As I found out, there is some kernel option CONFIG_PM_RUNTIME, which allows the kernel to autosuspend usb devices: source. It's on:
cat /proc/config.gz| gunzip | grep CONFIG_USB_SU
CONFIG_USB_SUPPORT=y
And as I read here I can disable usb autosuspend using boot parameter. So i edited my /etc/default.grub, and now my grub.cfg looks like this:
sudo cat /boot/grub/grub.cfg | grep usb
linux /boot/vmlinuz-linux root=UUID=d18cd4a4-2ebf-4874-80ff-8520016b0ed4 rw quiet usbcore.autosuspend=-1
linux /boot/vmlinuz-linux root=UUID=d18cd4a4-2ebf-4874-80ff-8520016b0ed4 rw quiet usbcore.autosuspend=-1
linux /boot/vmlinuz-linux root=UUID=d18cd4a4-2ebf-4874-80ff-8520016b0ed4 rw quiet usbcore.autosuspend=-1
After rebooting I checked:
cat /sys/module/usbcore/parameters/autosuspend
-1
Cool! It should work! But... it doesn't. The mouse still goes to sleep after 2 seconds, and:
kolzi@kolzi-laptop ~ % for i in /sys/bus/usb/devices/*/power/autosuspend_delay_ms; do cat $i;done

Where doesn't this 2 (or 2000) come from? How disable this suspending and let laptop-mode-tools control it? What's going on?
Last edited by PL_kolek (2014-08-09 13:14:23)For now I run
sudo systemctl disable laptop-mode.service
and changed in /etc/laptop-mode/laptop-mode.conf
ENABLE_LAPTOP_MODE_TOOLS=0
After rebooting I still have the same issues. Also, even after disabling laptop-mode-tools, the brightness changes after unplugging the laptop, so either the laptop mode wasn't disabled at all, or there is something else 'helping' me with powersaving.
@brebs
Thank you, but it looks for me more like a workaround than a solution. It could work, but it doesn't tell me what disables my mouse and where is the root of the problem.

Windows 8 does not have a USB boot option
QuestionHow can I boot my Windows 8 laptop from a USB device? I created a recovery disk on a USB thumb drive.
So far I have:
Entered into the UEFI (BIOS) and set USB to boot first.
Disabled secure boot.
I tried to reboot using the general setup options for startup in the windows settings page. I choose boot from USB through the UEFI, but got an error message that system does not have a USB boot option.
To confirm I also created a bootable DVD with an ISO burner, but my laptop cannot detect a DVD boot option either.
I assumed that the firmware of the UEFI for this computer allowed a bootable USB but in practice I cannot seem to get this work.
AnswerTo assist with not being able to boot from a USB device on a Windows 8 laptop, perform the following:
Plug in USB bootable device.
Hold down F12 when restarting and access UEFI menu (option is below drive list). If system is set to fast boot, CLICK HERE for instructions on entering the UEFI.
Go to UEFI and make USB "1st boot".
Disable secure boot.
Go to the "Advance" Tab, select "System".
Change boot order from UEFI to CSM.
Save changes and exit (F10).
Computer will restart and boot from USB drive.
When finished go back into the UEFI and set defaults then save changes and exit (F10). Windows 8 will reboot normally next reboot.Done that, only choices are "Set up Firefox to Sync" & "Pair a Device". No ''UNLINK THIS DEVICE". Your turn.

Portege A600 - Dissapearing of USB boot option after updating to bios 3.00
USB boot option seems to have disappeared from bios boot sequence menue after I installed bios 3.00. I wonder why this happened and how I can bring it back.
Hello,
normally the USB boot option is available and you can select the supported modi in the bios settings.
In a company environment it is possible to disable USB as boot device with some special tools. In this Case yo ushould ask your administrator.

[SOLVED] Disable Secure Boot on Asus Zenbook UX32A
Hi all, I hope I have posted in the right section, please move it otherwise.
I'm trying to install Arch on an Asus Zenbook, but I cannot boot installation media (an USB stick, in this case), as it requires the EFI binary to be signed, and only simple way out is to disable Secure Boot.
Unfortunately I'm not able to disable it from UEFI interface, as it is grayed out. Solutions I've found searching the Web suggested to set a password to BIOS, but even this way I wasn't able to enable it.
Notebook came with Windows 8 built in, and I upgraded BIOS to 214 version.
Thank you.
Last edited by juma93 (2013-03-30 01:29:05)Details of the user interface vary greatly from one computer to another. I've got some notes on disabling Secure Boot on an ASUS P8H77-I motherboard here, but they may not apply to your notebook, or there may be an extra trick. Along the latter lines, look for "fast boot" and "CSM" options and try fiddling with them to see if the Secure Boot option becomes alterable.

I can't disable secure boot.
This is actually rediculous and i've seen so many people become infuriated over this same issue that SHOULDN'T be an issue at all. I've been trying for FOUR hours to install ubuntu and get rid of shi**y windows 8.1. That's right FOUR hours. Not only have I had to redo the USB write to make it bootable multiple times i've had to sit through countless slow reboots because 8.1 is just a piece of malware that i've had to deal with for about a year due to the fact that I have no choice in what operating system I use on my laptop. Oh, and before someone says try burning it to a CD heres something funny, My Toshiba Satellite C55T-B5109 came with a fake optical drive so.... I've changed boot order i've switched to CSM boot, I only have two boot options and when I switched it booted a black screen with white text talking about how I need to insert a usb or cd(sorry i cant) and try again which I did, so i just switched back to the original boot option. I've already disabled fast boot and I updated my BIOS to v1.4 (the latest version) but that of course didnt do anything because toshiba is probably getting paid to make it almost (if not) impossible to use anything but the virus that is windows 8.1. Nobody speak a word if you dont know how to directly solve the problem. I don't want to see "Thats happening to me too! plz help" or "that sucks" be constructive or dont bother. The only solution or "you should try" should directly correlate to secure boot. Not the load order. The boot options. This needs to be solved immediately because the fact that the choice of a different OS should be available to everyone its my computer. I bought it.
That would be great but when I try CSM Boot it just says insert a valid USB or something of that nature. To which I keep unplugging and re-plugging the USB but it still doesnt get detected as a bootable drive. So I practically HAVE to use UEFI boot and no matter what I do it kicks windows back into my face. I can try selecting the boot from USB option but that doesn't work. I but USB at the top of my load order and my HDD at the bottom, but that doesn't work. I also opened BIOS at startup and clicked the USB but all it does is kick me into windows once again. I disabled fast boot, I finally forced secure boot off, but I still can't install Ubuntu. I've re-written the USB multiple times and I would try to burn it to a CD but I don't have an optical drive. I opened msconfig and had a look at the boot tab but it only lists the C: drive with windows 8 as the default OS. I've looked up everything and I have tried it. It seriously should not be this hard to install the OS of your choice because Windows decides that you have to use their OS. I must be doing something wrong so please tell me i'm out of ideas.

Disabling USB on PXI controllers
It has been suggested that USB should be disabled in the BIOS to reduce jitter in a RT application running on a PC (like the PXI controllers).
My question is: on a system (like the PXI-8108) that does not have a PS/2 connector, will disabling the USB not prevent the use of a keyboard or mouse so that it may be impossible to enter the BIOS setup again, or is the USB always active while the BIOS executes during booting?
Solved!
Go to Solution.Hello,
As described in the KnowledgeBase included below, you can disable USB support by changing the real-time initialization file. This can be done by adding a token to the NI-RT.ini file which is located on the RT target. You can access it via ftp://targetIPaddress/. In the [SystemSettings] section of /ni-rt.ini, set EnableUSB=FALSE save the file and reboot the system.

P35 Neo Questions about USB boot speed
Hi all,
I setup a MSI P35 neo2 system over the past month and I am having one issue that is SLOWING me down..
When booting from any USB stick in any USB port it seems like the mobo is using USB1 or USB1.1. So my PE 2.0 takes about 15 minutes to boot. I have searched the forums and net over and over and found nothing. Tried disabling USB Legacy support, which only makes the bios not recognize the USB stick. I have 3 bootable vista pe USB sticks and I boot 10 different dell models, NF4 and the Abit. They all boot at USB2 speeds (less than 1 min). I checked all the ports in windows with everest and sandrasoft, all seem to work fine in windows, but booting is still slow. Is there some secret menu to turn on usb 2.0 only in the bios? My Abit P35 system has no problems like this, but I really like the MSI!

Acer Aspire Switch 10 - USB Boot / Windows 8.1 installation from USB
Hi
I recently bought Switch 10. As it has only 32GB SSD splited in 24GB of windows partition and 8GB for Recovery I tried to merge those partition to get rid of Recovery and have only one SSD partition. Longbstory short, I failed and got a bluescreen, then a reboot and now I have this:
http://i.imgur.com/NmAkhgO.jpg
I have Windows 8.1 from official Microsoft website, I have orginal CDkey (not OEM from Acer). The version I downloaded is a 32/64bit installer (I think, but it may be only 32bit)
I was trying to set up BIOS by myself, but it always puts me to blue screen of windows (with error 0000225).
I provide screens of BIOS with default settings: http://imgur.com/a/jtyN2
I prepared pendrive from an .iso image with a program called Rufus, partitioning system GPT.
Then I changed BIOS settings to allow non secure boot and to boot first from USB HDD, and while booting I hit F12. But still I get that: http://imgur.com/yE48diG
- What I would like to do? Be able to start Windows 8.1 installator, clear all SSD partitions and make only one 32GB with windows.
- What I need? Help, becouse I cant start boot from USB and run Windows 8.1 installator.This is NOT correct info. Who in their right minds thinks that Windows' own installation media creator cannot create the proper media to install their own software. That's just idiotic. HERE is the correct info: First, you must be using 32bt installer. Switch 10 does not support 64bit. (At least mine does not) You can check the efi\boot folder for the file. bootx64.efi is incorrect. It should be bootia32.efi GPT or MBR SHOULD NOT MATTER. I personally know MBR works fine. I don't bother with GPT since I am no where near 2TB, nor can it ever be added. Drive must be FAT32 Add supervisor PW to UEFI to enable Secure Boot changes. Disable Secure Boot Change your boot order to reflect USB HDD first. After you hose your system and want to put it back, good luck with that. I can point you a direction on this but I haven't successfully done it yet myself, so I don't even say it is the 'right' direction. I wiped my partitions, and it's a BAD IDEA at this point in Win10 developement IMHO. Anyways, 8.1 with Bing is a different license than 8.1. You cannot DL 8.1 with Bing in any shape or form from MS. And your embedded key will not activate ANYTHING on the list in MS media creator. There is ONE guy who has UL the factory image as a torrent. It's the UK version, but it works and you can change the lanuage pack afterwards (I think. it wasn't annoying enough for me to try it yet) I couldn't seem to get RUFUS to create a UEFI from the guy's image. My solution was to use MS Media Tool to DL and create a 32bit, 8.1 usb drive. Once I verified it would indeed boot the machine, I then deleted all VISIBLE files from it and replaced them with the files from the UK ISO. DO NOT FORMAT. The whole point is to have the hidden system files and MBR intact. Just delete and then copy paste. At this point you should be able to boot and install windows. Then go DL the Master Installer from acer and it'll install MOST of the drivers. I still cannot get my built in sound to work again. Anybody that does, help would be much appreciated.

Having a problem with my Macbook (13", Late 2009 I believe) after attemption to update iOS to OS Mavericks. Have run into the grey screen of death, and have almost exhausted all options, including reseting pram, accessing fsck, and even using disk utility to reinstall the iOS. I believe that during the initial update (which is the root of the problem), there was some corruption within the directories which I believe can be contributing to my problem.
I was hoping to find a way to access my purchased apps from the app store on a windows computer so that I can make a USB boot drive in order to rule out the hardware problem that I am currently speculating.
Please advise, thanks in advance!Yes if you have the iPod and iTunes set up to sync via wifi. However, you have to do it from your one syncing computer and the iPod and computer have to be on the same network.

Creating a USB boot image for LabviewRT
I have installed Labview 8.2 and the "update 8.2.1" for Labview RT Standard version from the web.
I am trying to create a bootable image for a target Laptop PC, using a USB jump drive.
When I run NI-MAX and select TOOLS->RT Disk Utilities->Create Desktop PC Utility USB Drive, a popup dialog appears that says:
"This utility will reformat a USB drive with a Labview Real-Time boot USB utility for use with a USB boot-capable Desktop PC. Make sure the USB drive is connected to your computer before you continue.
Do you want to use this utility?"
Clicking on Yes, shows a dialog selection window, with a single entry ="Version 8.2", and an OK and Cancel button.
Selecting the OK button, shows an error popup titled: Measurement & Automation Explorer" with text="Unable to detect USB drives"
The jump drive is 32MB and is visible in WINDOWS Explorer.
WHY will NI-MAX not see or use this jump-drive ?
( I have tried two different jump drives from two different manufacturers)Hello,
Does your jump drive conform to the USB Mass Storage Device Class? What drive letter are you using? Did you create it by running the command line utility "subst"?
Have you tried doing this on a different computer? Are the USB ports 1.1 or 2.0?
