Disable USB Drives GPO

Hello,
I have a GPO set and linked to my AD domain to disable USB drives when they connect. The policy has the following settings enabled.
Removable Disks: Deny read access
Removable Disks: Deny write access
WPD Devices: Deny read access
WPD Devices: Deny write access
However, when I test users are always able to connect and use the USB drives. Is there anything else that needs to be configured before the policy works correctly?
Thanks in advance,

Hi,
You may have a check if the group policy got applied or not just as aperelli just indicated above.
Also you could try to configure your group policy setting like below:
>>navigate to
\Computer Configuration\Policies\Administrative Templates\System\Removable Storage Access.
>>enable the below setting:
All Removable Storage Classes: Deny All Access.
>>In the Command Prompt, type GPupdate /force
This setting is a effective way to diasble the removable storage access.
Best Regards,
Elaine

  • Security question, how to disable USB drives?

Hi. We´re implementing security measures on our small office, and in the account settings I´ve disabled cd burning for a given account, but I also want to diable the use of USB drives except for the compnay one. Is there a way to achieve this? Thanks

Just FYI no matter how many securities you put on a USB port, there is always a way around it, but you can buy usb lock plug ins online. They are called USB locks. I don't know where to find them off the top of my head. they plug into the usb connector in the back of your computer.

  • Accidentally disabled usb driver

I was trying to update the USB controller driver for the iPod shuffle, because it kept resetting while transfering music. I accidently disabled the USB controller, and now my computer (both windows explorer and itunes) won't recognize the ipod shuffle. The drivers have also disappeared from the Device Manager.
When plugged in, the ipod shuffle blinks green quickly many times, and then flashes orange once, before blinking green once again. It continues in this cycle indefinatly.
Is there any way to either reinstall or enable the USB controller driver???

i had to do a system restore, but now the driver is working

  • Disable USB drive write access via Profile Manager

Is there a way to disable users from plugging in a USB flash drive and copying files to it via the Profile Manager?
We are trying to configure this on a Mac network running 10.10.x with Server 4.0.3.
I understand that this can be done by deleting the IOUSBMassStorageClass.kext as a solution in older versions of OS X and that this was apparently possible in Workgroup Manager (now legacy and not supported). I would like to learn how to do this using the latest methods in 10.10.1 or 10.9.
Any tips would be greatly appreciated.
    Cheers,
    MC

I post on both to try to raise awareness. All previous topics have been to delete the usb drivers, put hot glue in the ports and to use the now non-supported Workgroup Manager. Thanks for checking though!

  • Disable USB driver installation from searching Windows Updates for software

    Hello,
When a plug-n-play device is connected to a Windows 7 system, the system by default tries to search Windows update for compatible drivers.  I have a preconfigured driver store on each system that will have the drivers for all of the USB devices we care
about so I'd like to search the local driver store first before searching for Windows updates.
I found the option that controls this under System Properties > Advanced system settings > Hardware tab > Device Installation Settings.  I have set this option before my machines run through sysprep, however, sysprep appears to be resetting
the option back to the Windows default (Yes, do this automatically) and ignores what I set it to.
I have a reg key that I'm running post-sysprep, but I'd like to avoid this as it's an extra step and I don't want to have to account for it long-term.  My question is, is there a way to set this option in my sysprep unattend file?

    If this is a domain joined machine, this can be set by a Group Policy Object;
    Open Group Policy Management Editor.
In the navigation pane, open Computer Configuration\Administrative Templates\System\Internet Communication Management\Internet
    Communication settings.
In the details pane, double-click Turn off Windows Update device driver searching.
    Do one of the following:
To turn off searching Windows Update, click Enabled.
To allow searching Windows Update, click Disabled.
Click OK to save your settings.
    Instructions taken from: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc730606(v=ws.10).aspx
If this PC is not on the domain (but is Pro) you may be able to set the same option on the Local Group Policy (GPEDIT.MSC).
    Kind Regards
    Barry

  • Unmounting of redirected USB Drives in Solaris

Does anybody have an idea how I could get some USB devices redirected to Windows but USB drives keep mounted in Solaris?
I've got a project in which some USB-devices (biometric scanners) must be redirected to Windows, but not storage devices (pen drives etc.). Since it's not possible to configure selective USB redirection on USB device type, we will have to disable USB drives on Windows level.
My problem is now, that USB storage devices will be automatically unmounted in Solaris as soon as a Windows session is opened. My idea was to change utprepmount or utdomount to ignore unmounting if it's caused by uttsc. However, it seems that these scripts are always called by utmountd, whether someone unplugs the device or it is redirected to Windows.
Any ideas on how I could keep my drives mounted?
    Thanks
    Roland

3rd party USB drivers are not yet supported. The details of the interface have not been sufficiently worked out to make a general purpose interface available. It could be possible to get access to the interfaces as they stand by making a deal under NDA.

USB drive in my mac is disabled. I am running OSX 10.9.2 . How to enable it

A SMC reset can often get ports working if they've stopped.  If you have an iMac or Mac Pro, just unplug the power cord and wait 10-15 seconds.  If you have a notebook Mac, then it a bit trickier...here is an article from apple

  • Disable the USB drive usage of iPod nano

    Hello,
    I am using iPod Nano 4G, 8GB.
I disabled the "Enable disk usage" option in iTunes, also the the manual mode is disabled. I dont want my iPod to be detected as a Mass Storage Device.
But even after these, whenever I am connecting my iPod to my machine, it is detecting as a USB Disk!
Can anyone tell me how can I disable my iPod using as a USB drive?
    Many thanks in advance

    Hi wfjones,
Welcome to the Support Communities!  Below is a link to the iPod Nano User Manual. The VoiceOver feature is explained on page 49-51.
iPod Nano 7th Gen User Manual - Using Voiceover - Page 49
    http://manuals.info.apple.com/MANUALS/1000/MA1624/en_US/ipod_nano_user_guide.pdf
Set up VoiceOver on iPod nano:
1 Connect EarPods or headphones to iPod nano.
2 On the Home screen, tap Settings, then tap General.
    3 Tap Accessibility.
4 Tap VoiceOver, then set any of these options:
Speak Hints: Explains how to interact with the item in the VoiceOver cursor. You may want to turn this on to help you learn how to use iPod nano, and turn it off later.
Speaking Rate: Increases or decreases the rate of speech for VoiceOver. This does not affect the speech rate for audiobooks or podcasts.
Language: Sets the language for VoiceOver. It should match the language set for iPod nano.
5 Tap to turn VoiceOver On/Off
If this is the first time you turned on VoiceOver on iPod nano, a dialog appears.
6 Tap OK in the dialog, then double-tap OK to confirm.
If you can’t see the screen, move your finger until you hear “OK button,” then double-tap with one finger.
If you do nothing for 15 seconds, the dialog disappears and VoiceOver turns off.
When VoiceOver is on, you use a different set of gestures to control iPod nano. If you change your mind and want to turn VoiceOver off, double-tap with two fingers to move the switch to Off. If you navigate away from the Settings screen, you need to use VoiceOver gestures to return to the setting and turn it off.
    Quickly activating accessibility features
You can set iPod nano to switch Invert Colors or VoiceOver off and on when you press the Home button three times. This makes it easier to share iPod nano with another person who doesn’t need the same features.
    Turn on the accessibility shortcut:
1 On the Home screen, tap Settings > General.
    2 Tap Accessibility.
3 Tap Triple-click Home, then tap one of the options.
    Cheers,
    - Judy

  • I disabled "Apple Mobile Device USB Driver" in Windows

I did this because my device wasn't charging and I was trying (still am trying) to solve that problem.
But once I disabled the "Apple Mobile Device USB Driver" under the Device Manager the device didn't dhwo up with an "X" next to it it just went away. And now when I plug in ipods it will not show up at all!
I even booted into safe mode expecting to see more drivers there and I still didn't see the apple one to re-enable it. I should have deleted it then it would have just come back on a re-boot!
    Anyone have any suggestions?

Re-installing the apple mobile device support under add and remove programs fixed this issue. Found this after many iTunes re-installs.
Still have a charging issue. I will post that in a different message.

I have been tasked with finding software that can disable USB ports not being used for keyboards & mica and CD/DVD devices.  At a previous job we used Sophos Enterprise console and it had that ability.  I currently use VIPRE Business Premium but I don't see where their products have the same capability.  So, what do you gals and guys use?

  • [SOLVED]Mounting usb drives "not authorized" with thunar-volman (XFCE)

    Hi,
I'm new to Arch (even though I must be approximately at my 15th try at installing it properly) and I have a problem with thunar-volman.
Whenever I log in as user, and try to mount a usb drive with thunar, let's say I want to plug a drive labeled Ext3_8Go, I get the same message in a pop-up window : "Failed to mount Ext3_8Go (or anything close, not in English in the text), not authorized (that part is in English)"
    My install is :
    - net install
    - partitions : 9Go for /, no swap, no separate /home
    - packages : base and base-devel. The only modifications in the package list is that I remove ppp, pcmciautils, and xfsprogs.
    - config : at the install stage I only modify rc.conf to change LOCALE and HOSTNAME, and pacman's mirrorlist to allow all French mirrors in addition to the one at the top.
When the usb installation is over, I run this script :
"installation_xfce.sh"  (there may be some errors left, I modify this script as I learn) :
    #!/bin/bash
    # expected environment : freshly installed archlinux, login : root.
echo "Are you connected to internet ? If not, please Ctrl+C and reload this script when connected"
echo "Otherwise, press ENTER to continue installation"

The important part of the script to solve the problem is :
    cat > /home/$var_username/.xinitrc << EOF
    #!/bin/sh
    # ~/.xinitrc
    # Executed by startx (run your window manager from here)
    exec ck-launch-session startxfce4
    thunar --daemon &
    EOF
    chown $var_username:users /home/$var_username/.xinitrc

  • Slow system when 1TB Store.E USB drive connected

    HI,
    I bought a 1TB Store.E USB drive.
After I installed the drive the whole system reacts very slow when the drive is access after not being use for a while.
Is there a standby modus and if yes, can it be switched off?
    Regards
    Heinz

    Hi
    >After I installed the drive the whole system reacts very slow when the drive is access after not being use for a while.
I think this happens because the 1TB external HDD needs to be scanned and indexed by system after the HDD has not been used for a while
You can try to check the Win 7 power options.

I would recommend to disable the power saving option for the USB ports.
    Maybe this helps
