Disable Volume/Mute keyboard keys

Is it possible to disable the volume/mute keys on the keyboard so that they don't try to control system volume. I've been wanting to map to different keyboard shortcuts but can't, even with third party software, since you can't seem to assign them since they keep bringing up system audio, which I want to avoid.
Any ideas?

I finally did some googling and found a screenshot of the keyboard pane and I'm definitely missing that checkbox for some reason, which I find very strange. Does it only show up with apple keyboards or something?
Not having a non-apple KB, I don't know if it's always there.
You may have a corrupted .plist.
To find out if it is a corrupted file, create a new user and see if the missing checkbox is there under the new account. If not, it's a system thing that needs to be solved.
If the new user has the checkbox, then it's a corrupted .plist which we can deal with.

  • Volume keyboard keys

I recently bought my laptop and not my volume keyboard key short cuts have stopped working.

    Hi @katiejay ,
Thank you for visiting the HP Support Forums and Welcome. I have looked into your issue about your HP Pavilion 15 notebook and issues with special keys. You can do a system restore. System restore will help if something automatically updated and did not go well on the Notebook.
When performing a System restore please note remove any and all USB devices. Disconnect all non-essential devices as they can cause issues.
You could try in the Control Panel, Clock, Language and Region, Language click Advanced Settings in the left pane. Then in Advanced settings, click Change Language bar hot keys.
In Text Services and Input Languages, click Change Key Sequence button and enable the the key sequence.
Here is a link to uninstall the keyboard. Restart the computer after uninstalling, it should reinstall automatically.
Let me know how this goes.
    Thanks

  • Keyboard keys are not working

Im on mac OS X 10.6.8 several keyboard keys are not working. For instance the at symbol is not working or question mark and random other punctuation keys. The problem started after running some code from terminal to trun off mouse acceleration and then installing a plug-in to control more accurately the mouse funtions. Ive since uninstalled the plug in and disabled the adjustment in terminal. Ive checked all the normal keyboard funcions to make sure settings were not funky. When I log out and log in as a differnt user the problem with the keyboard is fixed. Someone please help

    Hello lindzthecreator,
I suggest this part of the article named One or more keys on the keyboard do not respond found here http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1381
Some keys don't work as expected
From the Apple menu, choose System Preferences.
From the View menu, choose Speech.
Click the Text to Speech tab.
If "Speak selected text when the key is pressed" is enabled, the key or key combination set to speak text cannot be used for other purposes or used to type text--click Set Key and change it to a less-commonly used key combination (try to use modifier keys such as Shift, Command, Option, and Control). Or, disable the "Speak selected text when the key is pressed" option.
Click the Universal Access pane in System Preferences, click the Keyboard tab.
Make sure that Slow Keys is turned off. With Slow Keys on, you need to press a key for a longer period of time for it to be recognized.
In the Universal Access pane, click the Mouse tab, and make sure Mouse Keys is turned off. With Mouse Keys enabled, you cannot use the Numeric Keypad to enter numbers--instead the keypad moves the pointer (cursor). (There is an option to enable Mouse Keys with five presses of the Option key; you may want to turn that option off to avoid accidentally enabling it.) If Mouse Keys is enabled and you are using a keyboard with no numeric keypad or Num Lock function, see Unable to type while Mouse Keys is enabled in Mac OS X.
If the function keys on the top row of the keyboard are not working as expected, see Mac OS X: How to change the behavior of function keys.
If the issue persists, use Keyboard Viewer to help isolate the issue:
Click the Language & Text pane (Mac OS X v10.6) or International pane (Mac OS X v10.5.8 or earlier) in System Preferences.
Click the Input Sources tab (or Input Menu tab in Mac OS X 10.5.8 or earlier).
Click the Keyboard & Character Viewer "On" checkbox to select it (click the Keyboard Viewer "On" checkbox in Mac OS X 10.5.8 or earlier).
From the Input (flag) menu, choose Show Keyboard Viewer.
If the keyboard is connected and detected by Mac OS X, the keys you type will highlight in the Keyboard Viewer window. Open TextEdit (or any text application), and try to type something using the keys that were previously not responding to see if they highlight in Keyboard Viewer.
Start from the Mac OS X Install Disc, choose Terminal from the Utilities menu and test the keys which were previously not working.  If the keys work while started from the Install disc, then the keyboard itself is working correctly.  Use Mac OS X: How to troubleshoot a software issue to isolate the software issue that may be causing the keys to not respond.
    All the very best,

  • I cannot disable the full keyboard  navigation

Hello I have quite a problem.
As it says above, I cannot disable the full keyboard navigation option, whenever I try to, it re-activates itself in the preferences, even if I just change tabs and return within the preferences.
Furthermore, the keys seem to activate oddly, as I do not know of any shortcuts bound to the S key (JUST the s key), which commonly causes Itunes to skip forward a track in whatever playlist I am playing.
I have tried changing the other preferences, and I can change them with no difficulties, it is just the Keyboard navigation that is giving me problems.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thank you in advance.

On second thought... The help article cor-el linked mentions that Firefox may prompt you every time if the file is sent with the disposition:attachment header, i.e., forced save. You can bypass that problem (change disposition:attachment to disposition:inline) using the Inline Disposition extension. It has been around for a while, but I haven't tried it myself: [https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/inlinedisposition/]. Maybe that's what you need for Gmail.

  • Volume and Brightness Keys

I have problems using the volume and brightness keys on my keyboard. I've been using these shortcuts on my keyboards without pressing fn before. Nonetheless, all these keys didn't work all of a sudden, even if I try to press fn+f1/f2/f10/f11/f12.
I tried to restore the window system back to some other days and those keys work out fine. I just want to fix this problem. I want to only have to press f11 to change the volume just like the OS system does!
    Please help It's so inconvenient!!!

Thanks for your reply. It is true that the diamond icon does not run upon startup anymore. It used to run automatically whenever I start my window. I tried to run MSCONFIG but it shows that the keybrdmanage.exe is running.
Nonetheless, I tried to go RUN and choose the bootcamp file and under that file there is a keyboardmanger.exe file and once I click those keys work fine again. Is there a way to auto run bootcamp by itself so that I don't have to run all these steps again? I tried to choose always show the bootcamp icon in the task bar but unfortunately it doesnt work. =[
Can you please tell me what to do?

  • Volume and Eject Keys No Longer Work After Boot Camp 2.1 Update

Earlier this evening I allowed the Apple Software Update app in Windows to update Boot Camp to version 2.1. I allowed the computer to restart following a successful installation of the update. I've restarted two more times since then. Ever since the update (including before the computer restarted for the first time following the update), the volume and eject keys on my keyboard don't work. I also have an Apple Wireless Keyboard (one of the 2003-2007 era white/clear ones) and it exhibits the same problem. Both keyboards otherwise work fine. The computer also otherwise works fine, and there's no evidence of any driver problems.
    Some other potentially relevant information:
1- The Boot Camp icon is no longer present in the Windows System Tray.
2- The Boot Camp Control Panel is still present in the Windows Control Panel and it works fine.
3- All settings in the Boot Camp Control panel are unchanged from their defaults. In particular, I have confirmed that "Use all F1, F2, etc. keys as standard function keys" is still unchecked.
4- The Windows Device Manager properly recognizes both keyboards as Apple Keyboards.
I'm using Windows Vista Ultimate on an early 2008 MacBook; system specs are in my signature. Any ideas?
Thanks for taking the time to read this, and double-thanks if you can respond with any suggestions!

Ah, the joy of working with computers...:( Apparently, from my woes with the same problem, the Apple Keyboard Manager is rightfully entered into the Run directory in the Windows registry at HKLM/Microsoft/Windows/Current Version/Run.
Why it doesn't start I still have to find out, but this may be because I have Parallels Workstatio installed as well and switch back between a virtualized Windows and a Bootcamp Windows. However, after installing Bootcamp 2.1 first and then SP3 IN THE BOOTCAMP ENVIRONMENT everything seems to work, except the Energy Options taskbar icon and Apple Keyboard Manager.
Will keep you posted on any progress I make.
Apple Support, BTW, was absolutely abysmal, with them even refusing to accept the ticket at all, on the grounds that they have no knowledge about Windows. Apple, get your support fixed!

  • Keyboard keys dont work in Mac OSx

The following keys suddenly stop working and then continue working randomly: F1 to F7, but the F keys work (eg to show desktop) and also the right (and only the right) shift key.
This does not depend on what software I have running and happens very very frequently.
If I bring up the Keyboard Viewer when the problem exists, the keys also dont get registered on the keyboard viewer.
This is really annoying and happens in Mac OSx, not in Windows - although volume and brightness keys dont work (all the time) in Windows - less of an issue though.
    Any suggestions??

I'm having a similar problem. But it is not intermittent, they just don't work.
What can I do to fix this? If I use my wireless keyboard, it isn't a problem. Just when I use my laptop by itself...

  • Cannot mute keyboard on iPad 2

Screenlock is active. Volume Control only mutes music but does not mute keyboard clicks.

Switching keyboard clicks to OFF somewhat solves the issue but this doesn't give me keyboard sounds at all regardless of volumecontrol switch setting on the side.
However, I would like to control keyboard clicks with my volume button so that if I mute the iPad 2 I like to get rid of the click sound and if I turn up the volume I have my clicksound back.
