Disable wait for spinup on external devices

Hi,
i wonder if there is ANY way to disable the waiting time OSX takes when a file dialogue should appear and any external harddrive is sleeping. i dont care for that harddrive until i want to access it.
the only solution i found was unplugging the devise - not that productive as i want it to be
Thanks in advance!

yes oc i can eject it, but i just dont want to!
sorry for beeing unclear: my situation is:
- Working in my Local HDD, going to save a file!
- before the save-file-dialog appears, it takes up to 8 seconds (in which i cannot use the whole system) until the external hdd woke up and is ready
- then i can save the file.
i just wonder if there is a way for the system NOT TO WAIT for external harddrives.

    it doesnt appear to be working for me

    Hello pj o\'connell,
    Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
    Please see below for instructions on troubleshooting this issue of not receiving the verification code:
    I'm not receiving the verification code via SMS.
    Make sure that you have a good cellular network connection on your phone.
    Check that your phone number is one that can receive SMS messages. You can do this by having someone send you a text message.
    Check that you have the correct phone number associated with your account:
    Devices using iOS 7.0.3 or later: Tap Settings > iCloud > Account, then tap Keychain. Check that the phone number listed under Verification Number is correct. If not, enter another phone number.
    Macs using OS X Mavericks v10.9 or later: Choose Apple () menu > System Preferences. Click iCloud, then click Account Details. Check that the phone number listed under Verification number is correct. If not, enter another phone number.
    Check Apple System Status to see if there is currently a service outage affecting iCloud Keychain.
    If you do not have access to a device that has iCloud Keychain enabled, you can contact Apple Support and verify your identity for help completing iCloud Keychain setup.

  • When setting the midi port for an external device, how do I stop this altering the port setting for a separate external device?

    I am using Logic Pro 9.1.7.
    I have an EMU sampler set to port D.
    And a Roland JV 2080 set to port B.
    The ports refer to an external M-Audio Midisport midi interface.
    When creating a new track (brand new, not as a duplicate of another) for sounds from the Roland and setting port B in the Inspector, I find this affects certain existing tracks set to port D that are using sounds from the EMU.  The latter tracks are converted to port B.  I note that only some, not all, tracks are affected.
    If I try to change the EMU tracks back to port D, then the Roland track also switches to port D!  And so on...
    Each device has a 16-channel "instrument" in the Environment (but no virtual wiring anywhere).
    Usually, setting channels, banks and programs in the Event List for each track has been able to make things work reasonably well.
    Any suggestions that I could explore would be welcome.  Thanks.

    I haven't checked this with instrument tracks, could it possibly be you have somehow de-selected Universal Track Mode in Preferences/Audio?  It should be enabled.

  • How to disable Logic's dependency on external devices

    I use a tascam US2400 control surface with my Logic. I also use a couple midi keyboards via usb. When I disconnect my control surface, logic will prompt me that it cannot find it.
    Then, when I connect my keyboards, certain keys that I play alter and change screens in logic. This obviously disrupts the ability to play the keyboards.
    When I reconnect the control surface, everything goes back to normal. How can I disable Logic's dependency on the control surface?
    Thanks everyone!

    1. Don't disconnect your control surface.
    2. Remove your control surface from Logic's Control Surface Setup pane.

  • To wait or not to wait for BB10 device with physical keyboard

    Hello everyone. I'm really psyched about BB10 but am debating whether or not to buy the touch screen device at launch or wait for a Bold-lie device. I really dislike the softkeyboard on other phones but I've read the BB10 softkeyboard is beyond others in comparison. Can anyone offer some advice?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Honestly, I am fine with the keyboard intuitive Dev Alpha, however, is subjective ..
    My advice would be to wait for the release in stores to prove it directly

  • Using Final Cut Express for video editing without attaching external device

    Hello,
    I am a newbie to Final Cut Express as well as Mac's in general. I am wanting to use Final Cut Express for video editing of files, but without an attached camera. Is there any way to have Final Cut Express startup without having it prompt for an external A/V device? I just want to do some basic editing and use the chroma key feature. Can anyone help?
    Greatly Appreciated,

    iMAC   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

    Hi Zak,
    Unfortunately, I've tried that and I get into an issue that was addressed in this posting: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=836595&tstart=120 where FCE will show the splash screen and then the program doesn't start. I then have to delete FCE preferences and then I will get the Easy Setup dialog box prompt me again for choosing the external device.
    I am looking for a way to use FCE for video editing of files that I already have on my computer that I created using iClone software and is in .avi, or .mp4 format. I get FCE to work one time without the external device actually being attached, but then when restarting the program I get the dialog box asking for the external device and if it's not there, the program just closes, and to get it to work again, I have to delete the preference files and go through the process all over again which is time consuming especially when this is at work. If FCE is not the right program, can anyone suggest a good video editing program that doesn't require an external device and is as good or better than FCE?
    Thanks again for your help and support,

  • External device connection: RFC Server?

    Hello to all,
    i'm new here.
    I'm facing a new problem i never met before.
    I'm on a 4.7 enviroment and i have to interface sap with an external device.
    The producers of external device, release an executable file that makes (but i don't kwnow how) the communication from the device and sap.
    The only things that i had to do was (following the device documentation):
    1. Create a tcp/ip remote destination that point to one external executable (es: Z_EXT_DEVICE --> c:\device\device2sap.exe) (if i double-click on it, it don't do anything)
    2. Setup in the external setup device program (setupdevice.exe), the name of the RFC destination (Z_EXT_DEVICE), the sapgateway address (sapgw00) and the sap host address (ex 10.2.4.XX)
    (Note that i don't have to specify sap usr/pwd for the connection in any step).
    3. Call a simple function module in SAP system in this way:
    CALL FUNCTION 'Z_RFC_DATA' DESTINATION 'Z_EXT_DEVICE'
        EXPORTING
          header        = szheader
          data          = szdata
          status        = '0'
          data_len      = szvalue
        IMPORTING
          system           = szretsystem
          code             = szretcode
          ret_text         = szrettext
          header           = szanswerheader
          len_data         = szlendata
          bct_status       = szstatus
          bct_data         = szanswerdata
        EXCEPTIONS
          communication_failure  = 1
          system_failure         = 2
          OTHERS                 = 3.
    The code of the function module is empty :
    FUNCTION Z_RFC_BCT.
    ""Lokale Schnittstelle:
    *"  IMPORTING
    *"     VALUE(HEADER) LIKE  BAPIRET2-MESSAGE
    *"     VALUE(DATA) LIKE  BAPIRET2-MESSAGE
    *"     VALUE(STATUS) LIKE  BAPIRET2-MESSAGE
    *"     VALUE(DATA_LEN) LIKE  BAPIRET2-MESSAGE
    *"  EXPORTING
    *"     VALUE(SYSTEM) LIKE  BAPIRET2-MESSAGE
    *"     VALUE(CODE) LIKE  BAPIRET2-MESSAGE
    *"     VALUE(RET_TEXT) LIKE  BAPIRET2-MESSAGE
    *"     VALUE(HEADER) LIKE  BAPIRET2-MESSAGE
    *"     VALUE(DATA) LIKE  BAPIRET2-MESSAGE
    *"     VALUE(LEN_DATA) LIKE  BAPIRET2-MESSAGE
    *"     VALUE(STATUS) LIKE  BAPIRET2-MESSAGE
    *"  EXCEPTIONS
    *"      COMMUNICATION_FAILURE
    *"      SYSTEM_FAILURE
    ENDFUNCTION.
    After the call of the function module in sap system, magically the importing variables are filled all by values read from the external device. At this point I'd like to ask u some questions :
    1. I think that external device program (device2sap.exe) is an RFC server program. Is it right ??
    2. How the connection from external executable and sap works if i don't specify usr/pwd in any configuration file? The device    infact, work with every sap (if u execute the three sinple step wrote before)
    3. I'd like write a server like that for a different external device. In the old release of sap (4.0,4.5) there was a sap tools (in function module editor SE37) that permitted (starting from a function module), to generate a client or server external program (in C or VB). In 4.7 this functionality is missing. Is there other sap tools that permitt to do the same thing or this functionality is completly lost?? In the second case, do u have some hits that could help me in this step??
    4. I'd like to have some documentation about the server program and communication methos between external RFC server program and Sap. Where i can find some good documents that could help me in that task ??
    5. I heard about DCOM connector. Where i can find some good documentations that explain how is it , how it works and if it could solve my problem ?
    Thanks a lot in advance.
    Andrea

    Hi, I'm sure the device2sap.exe is developed by a Connector Tools. E.G. .Net Connector, Jco and so on.
    So reply your question as following:
    1. Yes, in the external application side, it can simulate a RFC server for the SAP to call, just like call to another R3 server.
    2. No need on use/pw. it is not DataBase connection, just a RFC connection. The key feature only need is the IP. And you should configure the RFC destination using IP. RFC is a FM call protocol, not to access a DB.
    3. Using the Connector tools I mentioned in the former reply. And you can navigate in the .Net Tech Forum in SDN.
    4. The guide of Connector Development can be get from SDN, and some sample code will be copy in the install directory, after you installed it.
    5. DCOM is the tech used in the former Connector version SAP DCOM conncetor. Now, as the windows is into the Dotnet Time, recommand you to use DotNet Connector.
    That's all.   hope it will be helpful

  • Wait for a "do shell script" command to finish

    i have an applescript that has to call a few external applications. i currently do this by setting the exact syntax of the external command in a string variable, then issue a "do shell script cmd" (seen many examples across the net using this standard)
    my applescript continues beyond these commands. how do i set the applescript to either wait for the above external command to finish, or not?
    regards
    jingo_man

    Usually AppleScript will wait for a shell script to complete before it continues, but adding an ampersand (&) at the end of the shell script command will make it run in the background, which allows the AppleScript to continue. See Technical Note 2065: do shell script in AppleScript for more information.

    Nope, GPS is a Federal requirement for anything operating a cellular telephone signal.  You don't ever plan to call 911 until you are in an emergency.  I don't see that requirement changing any time soon.
    If you are truly inconvenienced by the VZW network extender then perhaps you should disable you calling features in these areas and swap over to WiFi only.  There are many services and apps out there that can route your phone services through internet service providers.

  • Disable external hard drive to prevent waiting for file open

    I have a 1.5TB LaCie external drive I use exclusively for Time Machine. Whenever I try to open a file in Word or other apps, I find I'm waiting for the LaCie drive to spin up before I get a dialog box. I've excluded the drive from Spotlight searches but am wondering if anyone knows of a way to exclude it more broadly so I'm not waiting for it.
    Thanks,

    run the following terminal command. It will rebuild Launch Services database and may fix this issue.
    /System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/LaunchSe rvices.framework/Versions/A/Support/lsregister -kill -r -domain local -domain system -domain user

  • [Solved] Wait for external usb disk before mounting partition

    Hello,
    I have a fresh setup where 3 btrfs subvolumes are supposed to be mounted on /var /home and /opt. Those subvolumes are on an external usb drive (root fs is on a sd card).
    During boot, systemd tries to mount /var first but encounter "var not empty, mounting anyway" (probably due to several boot attempts) and then "special device uUID=12f15a3e-cf5c-4bc2-9475-6b4686a30f90 does not exist" where 12f15a3e-cf5c-4bc2-9475-6b4686a30f90 is the correct id of the drive.
    From journactl extract it seems that usb drive is not ready yet when /var is being mounted.
    Is there a way to make systemd wait for "the disk is ready" before trying to mount /var ?
    Information:
    - mounting /var in rescue mode works perfectly (mount -o subvol=var /dev/sda /var)
    - device is a raspberry but I think it has no link to the issue (except maybe being slow to send power to usb)
    - the usb drive is behind a 4 port usb hub (externally powered)
    - the usb drive indeed take some time to be powered up
    - /home and /opt are mounted in rescue mode automatically a few seconds later

    Hi all,
    I am having trouble with one particular 10.6.8 Netboot image that is hosted on a Mac Pro running 10.5.8 Server.  (The main 10.5.8 Server is currently hosting about 15 other Netboot and Netrestore images that work with no problem.)  I built the image on a 10.6.8 Server using System Image Utility from a fully updated 10.6.8 restore image on an external hard drive.  The external drive was started up on MacBook, MacBook Pro, and iMac systems ranging from Late '06 to Early '11 revisions.  Software update was run on every startup, but came back fully up-to-date every time and never encountered problems starting up each from the external drive.
    I then ran Disk Utility permissions repair on the external drive from the 10.6.8 Server Mac Pro and built the Netboot image in System Image Utility.  Although I am fairly new to this process, I have already successfully built several 10.6.8, 10.7.5, 10.8.5, and 10.9 Netrestore images as well as one 10.9 diagnostic Netboot that all work perfectly.  I followed the same process when creating the 10.6.8 Netboot image.
    The image I created, called 10.6.8 Diags 3.0, shows up in the Netboot list, but when I attempt to boot it shows the Apple logo for a bit before showing the "circle slash" symbol.  Verbose mode shows that it hangs when starting and repeats "Still waiting for root device" over and over again and never does anything.
    I have rebuilt the 10.6.8 Diags 3.0 Netboot image several times to rule out the possibility of corruption durring image creation.  I have also tried to create the image from a Firewire attached external drive as well as building the data on the external drive into a .dmg on the 10.6.8 Server and then creating the image from that.  All methods of creating the image yeild the same "Still waiting for root device" error when attempting to start up on any system supporting the 10.6.8 kernel.
    Netboot settings in Server Admin are the same as other Netboot images that are functioning: enabled, diskless, Intel (grayed out), and NFS.  I have verified that all enabled image index numbers are unique and even tried several different index numbers on the problem Neboot image.
    Again, all other Netrestore images I created on the same 10.6.8 Server work just fine when added to the Netboot directory on the 10.5.8 Main Server, but the Netboot image of 10.6.8 Diags 3.0 does not.  I'm not sure what else to try at this point, any ideas?

    Ooooh. I've been reading similar pages on cidori.org and just assumed it was one of those. Remarkable how my google searches didn't find that one. Thanks for the pointer, and I'll go try it.
    Thanks again, Dan.

    Hello feeling dumb
    You will need to put your iPhone into recovery mode by following the steps highlighted below.
    iOS: Forgotten passcode or device disabled after entering wrong passcode
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1212
    Disconnect the USB cable from the device, but leave the other end of the cable connected to your computer's USB port.
    Turn off the device: Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds until the red slider appears, then slide the slider. Wait for the device to shut down.
    While pressing and holding the Home button, reconnect the USB cable to the device. The device should turn on.
    Continue holding the Home button until you see the Connect to iTunes screen.
    iTunes will alert you that it has detected a device in recovery mode. Click OK, and then restore the device.

    -Norm G.

  • IBook is not starting up - "still waiting for root device"

    The 600 MHz / 640 MB / 20 GB iBook did not want to wake up and after forced shutdown would not start up. grey screen. With MacOS X CD - "prohibition sign", MacOs 9 - no start at all
    I had 2 partitions on the HD one with Tiger and other with 9.2.2 - none of them appear in the list of startUp folders. would not go into the Target mode.
    I know there are few threads here with similar problem - I went through them but nothing of the suggestions would help.
    Did reset the PRAM (only once though) - when I still heard the startUp chime
    Did reset PMU
    Left the machine unplugged for about 12 hours
    Now I managed to get into single user mode while attempting to start up from a Tiger DVD. Here is what I see on the screen:
    "using 1638 buffer headers and 1638 cluster IO headers
    Extension "com.apple.driver.AppleTexas2Audio" has no kernel dependency.
    (then there are 14 extensions listed that has no kernel dependency)

    and so on with "still waiting..." again and again
    also I did not hear start up sound anymore. Yesterday it was still audible.... can someone please help?!
    iBook dual USB   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

    thanx for replying. Last night I finally managed to start up the machine using a FireWire ext HD as a StartUp Disk. Disk Utility and TechTool Pro and Disk Warrior are not showing the internal HD at all.
    Since I was not able to use any start CDs including original MacOs X and 9 Cds maybe it is a problem with Data Cable that connects both HD and optical drive with logic board? It is hard to imagine why it would come to something like that. Overheat? I did not have enough free space on Tiger partition - 1GB. Maybe that. I am starting to look for a replacement HD....

  • Forbidden Screen - Error: "Still waiting for root device"

    Greetings to all! I come to you with my boot troubles as a supplicant, in the hope that someone can help.
    I have a PowerBook G4 15-inch, pre-Intel from late 2005. Until today it always worked and rarely hanged. All I've ever needed to do when in trouble was reboot. I've updated the Apple OSX software regularly and have never touched the hardware, except once 18 months ago to add memory. All I do with this machine is use it. It's been weeks since I installed any new software.
    There were no warning signs before the problem started today.
    FIRST SIGN OF TROUBLE: The machine was unusually slow, showing beach balls on every minor move. I powered down conventionally and later turned it on again. After a minute I got the "Forbidden Sign" grey screen, which I had never seen before. So I rebooted, and got that again.
    +I turned to the only other available machine (very old PC, unfortunately) to browse for solutions, and have so far tried the following:+
    1) BOOT FROM INSTALLATION DISK: Forbidden Screen. After a couple of attempts I removed the disk (by clicking trackpad on power up). At some point, in desperation, I even tried Disc 2.
    2) RESET PRAM (Command-Option-P-R on power up) : I got three chimes, then the grey screen. It stayed on the apple and gear for many minutes. At least it never went to the Forbidden Screen.
    3) FILE SYSTEM CHECK (Option-S on power up) : After a few steps it shows error messages (see below) and starts repeating, "Still waiting for root device," over and over.
    4) RESET NVRAM (Command-Option-O-F on power up) : I got a blue screen with text and was able to input "reset-nvram" (response: OK) and then "boot." Result: Forbidden Screen.
    5) SAFE START (Option on power up) : Forget it. Forbidden Screen. Same when I try it with "C" as some sites recommend. Same with or without the Install Disk in the DVD driver.
    6) POWER MANAGEMENT UNIT RESET (Shift-Control-Option-Power): Subsequent boot still produces Forbidden Screen.
    *THE ERROR MESSAGES*
    Here are some of the messages when I start up with Option-S:
    CSRHIDTransitionDriver::probe booting in single user .. do not match
    Extension "com.apple.driver.AppleUSBTCKeyboard" has no kernel dependency.
    Extension "com.apple.driver.AppleUSBTCKeyEventDriver" has no kernel dependency.
    Apple PMU::CLOCK RESET! PMU WAS PROBABLY RESET SOMEHOW!! +(Yes, I did that, but it wasn't showing this before I did, and it WAS showing all of the following.)+
    Security auditing service present
    BSM auditing present
    disabled
    rooting via boot-uuid from /chosen: +(I think the long code that follows is the serial number?)+
    Waiting on <dict ID="o"><key>IOProviderClass</key><string ID="1">IOResources</string><key>IOResourceMatch</key><string ID="2">boot-uuid-media</string></dict>
    PMUMS::start ERROR: failed to find IOATABlockStorageDriver
    Still waiting for root device
    Still waiting for root device
    Still waiting for root device
    +(etc. ad infinitum)+
    *So now I'm begging anyone for answers to these questions:*
    Am I doomed?
    Does anyone know what the problem is?
    This seems to be happening prior to disk access, as it happens with or without the Install Disk. So do I still have the hard drive working? Is my data on it?!
    Was resetting the Power Management Unit a bad idea?
    What can I do next?
    THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!
    Nicholas from NYC

    Thanks for your reply, Louie!
    In the meantime I have succeeded in booting via the Install Disc using Option on power up. The Hardware test shows nada wrong. Disk Util repair goes up to "Rebuilding Category B-Tree" and then fails. Frustratingly, the HD is somehow visible, because the diagnostics correctly identify it and give correct values for empty space. Right now I'm running the Erase Free Space option and it's working - how is that possible? I've gotten into Single User mode and tried various FSCK commands. Sometimes it comes back with the superblock error and "Bad Magic Number" which I believe indicates a corrupted block within the boot sector. I can't figure out how to reassign without reformatting and losing the data. This will cost me a few weeks of data, but really not that much work - still set me back by days.
    Next step will be to start taking it apart, as you suggest, starting with the easy matter of trying with just one DIMM or switching the DIMMs.
    Thanks again, and if anyone knows how to help - how does one reassign a superblock from the Single User mode?
