Disabling a U3 USB Flash Drive

I bought a U3 USB flash drive (San Disk 2GB) and know everytime a separate drive pops up on my iBook and I have to eject 2 drives to get the thing off my mac. I tried reformatting, but still the U3 disk shows. How can my Flash disk be normal like my old San Disk 256MB drive I had before I bought this new one?
John

Hi Guys,
The following is an update to my last post. I figured I'd try again to contact U3 & SanDisk again about the error of their ways and the undesirability of the U3 software & partition for Mac users. Firstly, it turns out that U3 is apparently a subsidiary of SanDisk. The Tech Support fellow who I spoke with claimed that they had released a Mac version of the "uninstaller", but it had to be pulled from their websites because of bugs and/or compatibility issues (it probably was deleting partitions & software from users hard drives instead of the flash drive). They now say that the Mac "uninstaller" should show up again "in coming months". I would suggest using great care in using any software that comes from them - they are SO incredibly clueless (at LEAST about Mac systems)! My original recommendation from my previous post still stands: Keep giving them heqq by way of their tech support line until they come through for us!

  • Using USB flash drive to connect laptop

On previous versions of Network Magic, when adding a laptop to my wireless network, an option would appear for using a USB flash drive to transfer settings and/or password to the new machine.
After a few "upgrades" to NM, the option ONLY appears after I turn my security off.  If I leave my WEP security ON, the only option that appears is to "copy" the 32-digit password & enter it on the laptop.  However, I keep getting errors.
Is there a procedure to use a USB flash drive to connect a "new" laptop to my secured wireless network?
    Thank you.

    Hi thomas,
If this is your own New Laptop to your Network, and even after you supplied the password, the problem is the Network Lock is still on. You need to disable the Network Lock. Enter the password, installed Network Magic if the Laptop is your own. You need to stop tracking your Laptop as an intruder on your other copies of Network Magic.
Then you need to reenable the Network Lock from your Wired Computer. Use your other computer to activated the copy of Network Magic installed on the laptop.

  • Request BIOS to fix an USB flash drive boot problem in EFI (GE60 0ND-265FR)

    Hello,
I'm currently trying to install Ubuntu on my MSI GE60 0ND notebook but I'm having troubles to boot on my USB flash drive in EFI mode.
I've disabled Fast Boot and Secure Boot options but the only thing I can have is the GRUB menu of the liveUSB and whatever option I try I always get a blank screen. On the other hand everything works fine when I set the BIOS on Legacy mode.
It's the same problem they have on this thread : https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=165756.0 but with an other notebook.
The problem is  I want to keep Windows 8 side by side with Ubuntu so I must have them both installed in EFI mode.
I asked for help on a specialized forum (french Ubuntu's community) and they believe this problem is related to the BIOS. Do you think an unlocked BIOS will help with that ?
Here are my current BIOs and EC infos :
    BIOS Version : E16GAIMS.514
    BIOS Build : 03/12/2013
    EC Version : 16GAEMS1 Ver5.05
    EC Build : 02/21/2013
Thanks for your help, and sorry if I've made English mistakes.

i don't know if unlocked BIOS can help you with this

  • USB Flash Drive Powered but Not Mounting

I have two USB flash drives that refuse to mount on my 13" MacBook Pro running 10.6.7.
The flash drive powers on, and blinks a bit.
The drive shows up in Disk Utility but the volumes are listed generically (like disk1s2) rather than having their proper volume name.
Clicking the mount button with a colume selected appears ineffective.
Trying to eject the drive results in:
The disk “Kingston DataTraveler 200 Media” could not be unmounted.
    Ideas
Pulling the drive out without ejecting crashes Disk Utility.  The Disk Utility Log doesn't say anything helpful.
I have two drives I've tried, opne the Kingston above which has two HFS+J volumes and another one formatted FAT32.  Both drives work great on a different MacBook.  I don't have other drives on hand to test at the moment.
I have MacFUSE and NTFS-3G and Parallels 6, installed, I haven't tried disabling them yet.  Anyone else experiencing similar issues?  Figured it out yet? Ideas?

Just so you don't think you're alone, I've been having the same problem, but with firewire devices. I'm searching around to see if there's a solution. I re-ran the 10.4.3 combo updater and it seemed to "fix" things for a while, but now the problem is back. I was in the middle of a copy from a FW CD-drive and it just disconnected. Then the iMac disconnected a hard drive attached to the other FW port. So it's happening on both ports, even when the computer is actively engaged in something.
I'm going to run the updater again. Then I might try downgrading to 10.4.2.

  • USB Flash Drive not readable using 10.4.6 but is with 10.3.9

I noticed that a 32MB USB Flash Drive that used to work on my Powerbook when it was running 10.3.9 became unreadable when I upgraded to 10.4.6. This flash drive still works on my Dell WinXP system and I just tried booting the powerbook off a clone of my 10.3.9 setup (on an external firewire drive) and my flash drive works on that. So it appears to me that 10.4 has introduced a software bug that has disabled support for some flash drives. I will note that I also use a USB compact flash reader for transfering digital pictures and that does work under 10.4.6 so the problem does not affect all USB flash devices.
Is Apple aware of this? Are they working on it?

Have you tried to open it in disk utility? Probably won't, but worth a shot. If not and you don't know who made it, then I'd say your out of luck. Probably time for a new Flash drive.
A 32meg Flash Drive today is very cheap if you can find one. You can get a 250 meg Flash drive for $20-$30. That's 8 times the storage you have now.

  • Can't boot from a USB flash drive

I believe this ability was lost after updating to BIOS 80.52 following HP's "strong recommendation".No warning was given that this update would remove this ability and see that "Due to security changes, after this BIOS update is installed, previous versions cannot be reinstalled."
I have tried disabling Secure Boot and enabling Legacy Boot, and tried re-applying BIOS defaults.
Is there a particular combination of BIOS settings that I haven't been able to find?As the warranty on my computer expired in July 2014, the HP Customer Support Contact page won't even accept my request for assistance - despite the "strongly recommended" BIOS update being made available *after* this date. I require the ability to boot from USB flash drives ... how can this now be achieved?
Is there an HP BIOS for a more recent HP product with the JasmineR motherboard (or an AMI or other BIOS) available and how could I install it?
Boot a BIOS flashing program from CD or DVD and somehow bypass the HP BIOS's block on updates? Thanks in advance for any advice

Hi, thanks for the quick reply. I don't have another PC handy but will try to find one. The USB flash drive definitely does NOT appear in the boot menu - even as an HDD or CD/DVD as I have seen mentioned elsewhere as a possibility - and all USB devices are enabled in the BIOS settings and USB HDD and USB Floppy/CD are above rEFInd and all other entries in the boot order. I should also have mentioned that I've tried a (Lexar) USB flash drive prepared approximately a year ago with GParted Live which *has* previously booted the machine, and also different models of flash drives (Toshiba, Transcend) and different methods of preparing them such as burning bootable ISO images with Win32DiskImager, Universal USB Installer and Rufus, and manually creating and formatting a bootable FAT32 partition with diskpart (as per https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj200124.aspx) and copying in System Rescue CD/GParted/Clonezilla files, ensuring there is an /EFI/BOOT/BOOTX64.efi file. In diskpart, the "attributes disk" command shows that the USB drives are not marked as bootable and "help attributes disk" says READONLY is currently the only disk flag that may be changed. (Don't know if this means anything as the GParted disk isn't "bootable" but did boot) Did the BIOS update disable enumerating USB devices until later in the Windows 8.1 boot process?

  • Booting to USB Flash Drive

I used Acronis True Image for 15 years to make full image backups.  Now I am told by Acronis tech support that even though their new True Image 2015 is supposed to be compatible with Win 8.0, Win 8.1, and Win 10, it cannot recovery backups unless I go into the BIOS and disable the UEFI secure boot and return to the old legacy settings. My question is, if I use Win 8.1 to create a USB recovery drive, will it be bootable in UEFI secure boot, or must I go into the BIOS, disable the secure boot, and return to the old legacy settings?  My BIOS settings only have three options for assigning/changing the boot order: 1.  OS boot manager2.  USB diskette/USB hard disk3.  USB CD/DVD ROM   (my laptop has no cd/dvd drive, so I must use an external DVD drive) However, I see no settings to boot specifically from a USB flash drive, even though this is the preferred method according to WIN 8.1.  The 3 settings are the same - one set for UEFI, and another set with the same 3 options for legacy settings. If I change the UEFI boot order to USB CD/DVD ROM will I be able to boot from the USB flash drive WITHOUT disabling the UEFI secure boot feature??

Furthermore, can we also have Windows installation option "F6" have loading s-ata drivers from an usb-stick

    Good day Sir!
I Have 2 poweredge sc430 server with windows server 2003 64bit OS... I want to upgrade it to windows server 2008 standard edition R2 64bit.. I first disable the internal cdrom from bios and installed win2k8 64bit on 1 sc430 using external dvdrom. But when i used a usb flash drive to install win2k8 to another sc430, the server and keyboard hangs. ive already configured the boot sequence(usb drive as 1st priority). ive tried my usb flash to a non dell pc to make sure if my usb boots well and it worked... i think that there must be something i missed in configuring the bios of sc430
    Thanks in advance!

  • Using bootable USB flash drive to partition internal HDD

I just got my B5400 with Windows 8 x64 and UEFI. I found out that you can't lower the size of the hard drive by a lot. I want to split my HDD into 250GB and 666GB, one for the OS and one for data obviously. Therefore I tried the tool windows offered me but it said that I couldn't make a smaller drive because system relevant data are working at the moment.
So after searching the web I found out, that I have to use a bootable USB flash drive with something like Gparted running, to partition the HDD without any errors. I formatted my USB drive to FAT32 and made it a bootable stick with a program offered on the official website of gparted. I eagerly wanted to use it and plugged it in. Still booting into Windows. So I went into UEFI and checked the settings. I disabled secure boot mode and made it that legacy comes first. Then I chose 'USB HDD flash drive' in the boot manager and exited saving changes. I started my laptop and hit enter to et to the boot manager, made sure to select my USB drive and then confirmed it. It booted into Windows. I don't even understand why it is that way. It is like everything is set up correctly, but still it's trolling me.
I would appreciate any help greatly. And to make clear, I don't want to burn a CD or DVD, I want it to be working with a USB drive.

    Hello,
search the web for "yummi bootmanager", it's free and easy to use.
If you got OKR (OneKeyRecovery) on your device, it will not longer work with resized parititions.

  • USB flash drive on Mavericks

I have a probelme using a USB flash drive on Mavericks. It worked O.K before, but it is no longer recognized. For the past several months, I used it with Windows computers at work without a problem and now need to work on projects using my own computer (Mavericks). Please help.

Was the drive encrypted using a JAMF policy?  If not, I do not believe so.  While I have not supported the encryption of external drives, I will use an experience to support my response.
I had a user who was granted admin rights (why, I don't know).  The user enabled FileVault via our policy.  Then the user perceived the FileVault was causing problems so the users disabled it and decrypted the drive.  Then, once the user realized that they would probably get in trouble for this, then manually enabled it.  So while my smart group shows FV is enabled, my decryption key stored in the JSS does not match that on the unit.
I would suggest investigating a method of providing a self-service policy for external drives.  Once again, in all my JAMF deployments, I have not had the requirement of encrypting external drives.

  • USB Flash Drive & power using Hub

Interesting fact -- my iMac can accept my USB Flash Drive on the convenient keyboard hub without any problem. However, when I reboot using Boot Camp into Windows XP Pro -- It cannot! It says insufficient power & I must use one of the USB ports on the (less convenient) rear of the iMac. This isn’t a major issue for me since I mostly am using OS X & rarely use Windows & even less often need to use a USB Flash drive from Windows. However, I do need to unplug something else (the Apple Modem) on those rare occasions when I wish to plug in a USB Flash Drive  while in Windows. BTW, I use SanDIsk Micro Cruzer with the U3 software --which doesn’t work with OS X -- deleted.
I would think the power requirements would be exactly the same -- being as the hardware (computer & flash drive) is identical whether I’m running OS X or XP Pro.
    Strange.

  • USB flash drive security on mac and windows

    Hi
I've got an USB flash drive and I would like to secure it so that data on it will not be accessible unless a password is provided.
The point is that I need to use it on both my macbook with tiger OS and on another PC with windows XP.
The USB flash drive is a sandisk cruzer titanium that comes with U3. Originally I was using an U3 protection that asks for a password when the flash drive is plugged in.
U3 is not supported by MAC so I had to disable the password protection to use it on my brand new macbook.

You will be able to open it if you make it a .iso
image. There is software available for both OSes to
open and browse/modify a .iso image file. I do not
know how well any of them use passwords for the
    images.
    Maybe it's winiso
What I would recommend is using Winrar
(http://www.rarlabs.com/) and just using a compresses
and encrypted file that both OS's can manipulate.
With winrar you create an archive and then each time you want to edit a file you have to extract it, modify it and then reinsert it in the archive.
What I was looking for is something more user friendly.
Images created with mac, protected with a password, are ok but are not compatible with windows.
Viceversa, U3 is compatible with windows but not mac ...

  • Booting from a USB Flash Drive and Optimizing Performance

I know that you can boot Leopard from a USB flash drive, and I have a 16GB flash drive I'm using as a bootup disk on this 2006 MacBook I have that has a broken hard drive (it was recalled, but the recall ended in 2010).
The problem is that it's very slow. I have about 8GB of free space on it, so it can't be the VRAM being too small. The USB speed just stinks. There must be ways to optimize the OS to run off of a slow drive by accessing data as infrequently as possible. What can I do to speed this up? Should I disable hard disk sleeping? Should I use some kind of Mac tuneup/optimization tool's feature?
I plan to get an internal hard drive for it, but I'm stuck with this for a while.

Not all USB2 Flash drives are equal, in fact I bought 2 16 GB USB drives for cheap, as along side of them were even the same brand 16 GB Flash Drives just a different model, for 5 times as much!
Me was thinking how bad could they be? Well, they could be 5 times worse than other USB2 flash drives... LOL on me!
They under extremely rare occasions will Read or Write at 5 MB/s, & very often 1 MB/s...
My Buffalo Flash drives do near USB2's top speed, see some diffs...

Optimizing yours will give little benefit.
You could also do a USB2 RAID0 setup if you have enough ports.
