Disabling Adobe Reader X Plug-In

I have always enjoyed Safari's ability to open PDFs natively without requiring a plug-in. I recently installed Abobe Reader X, and now it is the default plug-in for PDFs. I have tried to disable this in Reader's preferences, but the checkbox is grayed out. Is there a preference, or Terminal trick I can use, or should I downgrade my version of Reader back to 9.4?

Wow, I understood part of what you wrote. I got as far as the Installed Plug-Ins page and was confronted with charts that might have well have been written in Cyrillic. MIME Type, Description, Extensions by the dozens. Here's the chart from file QuickTime Plugin.plugin:

Thanks in advance, as always.

  • Control Adobe Reader browser plug-in programmatically

Is it possible to control the size of the
    Adobe Reader Browser plug-in programmitically?
I would like to be able to:
    1) Reduce the size of the plugin, so that I can use the
botton half of the browser to display other information.
    2) Change/Reload/Specify a different document to display.
    3) Programmitically zoom or chnage pages.
I would like to do this with ASP.NET, if possible.
I've seen thrid party ASP.NET controls that do this.
I would prefer to use the Adobe plug-in.
    Thanks

    Try reinstalling Lion:
    Reinstalling Lion Without the Installer
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alterhatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You can also re-download the Lion installer by opening the App Store application. Hold down the OPTION key and click on the Purchases icon in the toolbar. You should now see an active Install button to the right of your Lion purchase entry. There are situations in which this will not work. For example, if you are already booted into the Lion you originally purchased with your Apple ID or if an instance of the Lion installer is located anywhere on your computer.

  • How do I disable Adobe Reader from opening pdfs?

how do I disable Adobe Reader from opening pdfs in Safari? I tried unchecking the box for opening pdfs in browser under Adobe's Internet prefs, but that didn't seem to work.

    Hello-
I actually saw a solution to this earlier today. To disable PDF viewing in safari, first quit safari, then open terminal, and type in this command:
defaults write com.apple.Safari WebKitOmitPDFSupport -bool YES
To re-enable PDF viewing in safari simply open the terminal, and change the "YES" in the command above to a "NO"
    Hope this helps.

    Hello,
There's a solution if you want to see the PDF inside Safari's window :
Go to the folder : Your Hard Drive / Library / Internet Plug-ins.
If you see a file with PDF in its name drag it to the trash (or on the desktop).
Quit and restart Safari to test with a PDF.
Put the plug-ins in the same folder.

  • How to disable adobe reader in safari

I am aware there is this thread on basically the same problem How can I regain Preview as my default PDF browser in Safari?.
However my circumstances are a bit different.
One of my content vendors uses FileOpen to lock their PDFs and that is why I even bothered to install adobe (v10.1.4). Thru the install process I was careful not to have adobe become the default viewer by checking all the relevant boxes I saw.
When I go to Finder and doubleclick on a PDF, they are still opened by Preview. Right click->Get Info does show Preview as default viewer.
However in Safari, Adobe has taken over despite in Adobe->Preferences->display pdf in browser is not only unchecked but grayed out. But even though grayed out, right below that checkbox shows Adobe Reader.app is the browser view and I see no way of changing it.
In Library/Internet Plug-ins there are NO pdf plug ins. In fact I have only a single one (picasa).
I am not aware how to get to Username/Library/Internet Plug-ins as the reference thread talks about.
Whatever the solution, I still need adobe working on my machine otherwise I cannot view the content from that one vendor.
    Any suggestions? Thanks.

  • Adobe reader "missing plug-in"

Since upgrading (downgrading?) to Lion, several places where pages previously would load and appear no longer do so, but instead greet me with "missing plug-in".  When I check to see which plug-in is indeed missing, I'm told "To view this content, I need Adobe Reader" and instructs me to go to Adobe to get the plug-in.  After downloading and installing Reader, I still get this message.  I must confess I'm not well versed in the world of Mac commands so any assistance would be appreciated.  What am I doing wrong?

  • Disabling Adobe Reader X updates in an enterprise

    Hi Guys,
Can anyone tell me where the registry key is to disable updates to the New Adobe Reader X? I have this in place for version 9 but I cannot find the key even after using proxmon to see what Adobe is changing in the registry.
Is there any new methods of managing an adobe reader in this new version?
    Thanks in advance

    Hi,
For disabling ReaderX updates following registry entry can be created:
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Adobe\Acrobat Reader\10.0\FeatureLockDown]
    "bUpdater"=dword:00000000
Hope that it will be useful. Thanks

  • Adobe reader missing plug-ins

Having read that Adobe Flash had been hacked two days ago I "uninstalled" everything I could find in Finder to do with Adobe to try to clean up my IMac and start fresh when I upgraded to Mountain Lion on August 26.  Then re-downloaded Adobe Reader.  Now some of my documents won't open because it states: "There was an error opening this document.  The file is damaged and could not be repaired."  If I go back in Time Machine to before I did the uninstall will this allow the files to be displayed in the original, undamaged format?  Also, if I go back in Time Machine will I lose my emails, documents and other data since that date?  (two days ago)  System Preferences still shows Adobe Flash in the "Other" section along with Flip4Mac and Perian even though I tried to delete Flash Player from here.
The second issue is that when I go to Charlie Rose it states "Blocked Plugin" .  Additionaly, I am unable to open movies and clips that come to me via email due to the same message.  Is this a security feature of Mountain Lion or have I removed necessary plugins?
    Thanks for any help.

The Flash Player icon still appears in SYSTEM PREFERENCES pane marked "OTHER".  When I view the tabs (Advanced tab specifically)  it shows that Plug-in version 11.3.300.257 in installed.  HOWEVER, since I can not find any program named Adobe Flash anywhere else including under Applications or Devices it appears that I must have successfully uninstalled Flash. If this is correct, why does the icon still appear in System Preferences?  If this indicates that it is not uninstalled then I am back to the problem of how to do it and that is not addressed in the article referred to above since I don't have either the application or the device to uninstall.
Meanwhile any help regarding the Adobe Reader issue would be welcome.
    Thanks.

  • Disabling Adobe Reader Addons in IE8 through javascript

    Hi,
    I have a scenario.
I want to disable/enable Adobe reader addons in IE 8 based on certain condition in my website through javascript.
Is it possible to enable/disable addons in IE8 through javascript, or through any means without doing it manually?
Please let me know if any more details is required.
    Thanks
    Previn S

If you do not want to enable \disable add-ons manually, you can do it via registry, get the class ID for this add-on from Tools\Manage add-ons, right click this add-on, click "more information", then open registry editor, locate to [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Ext\Settings],
find the class ID, “Flags”=dword:00000001, 0 is for enable and 1 is for disable.
I haven't heard about changing add-ons settings via javascript, please let us know if you want more information.

  • Adobe Reader XI plug-ins for IE8

I am updated to Adobe Reader XI 11.0.02 according to "Help/About Adobe Reader XI," and my "Add or Remove programs" on XP- SP3 says 11.0.02.  Also, my plug-in for Chrome says 11.0.02. But, my IE8 plug-ins still say 11.0.01.36 for Adobe PDF Reader and 11.0.0.379 for Adobe PDF Link Helper.  I uninstalled reader and reinstalled and still the same thing.  Why won't the IE8 Reader plug-ins update?
    Thanks.

I see the same in IE10; maybe the IE add-on was not updated (i.e. not affected by the security fixes that went into 11.0.1 & 11.0.2)?

  • How can you disable Adobe Reader from opening a file right after you save it as a pdf?

    Hi,
I often save word files as pdf files and right after I save them as pdfs it opens the file in adobe reader. How can I disable this?
    Thanks

Ahh, but that's the design function of any PDF viewer add-on to a browser.
To avoid -- Use the browser feature that saves a file to the local machine.
Then open the file with the appropriate application.
If your machine/device does not support this then you'd want to change to one that supports what you want eh.
    Be well...

  • Disabling Adobe Reader Share Review in 10.1.3

    Hello,
I would like to fully disable the Adobe Reader Share Review in version 10.1.3. That is the prompt asking the user to "Connect to join the shared review of ..." on specific documents.
In version 9 we used the Customization Wizard > Online and Acrobat.com Features and had access to 5 options or disabling the whole Acrovbat.Com access.
In version 10, the Customization Wizard X  now gives us 3 options, 2 of which are greyed out but even selecting "Disable all Acrobat.Com access... " does not prevent the user to get prompted to connect to a review server.
Any help to find a solution would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,

    Hi,
Is the requirement to disable the check for updates feature altogether (i.e. remove the menu item), or to just disable the automatic check that happens on startup?
There isn't currently a documented way to totally disable the feature altogether, however it's possible to add such a feature in a future service update if necessary.
There is a potential way in which you can modify the behavior of the wizard such that it will always find no updates (the menu item will still be present, however). If this is an acceptable solution to you, let me know and I'll fill you in on the details.
    Thanks,
    Brian
