Disabling anonymous ftp access

We have just completed a 9iFS install. The previous version of iFS was 1.1.6. We were having problems with anonymous logins (people were dumping garbage in our public folder) and we disabled anonymous FTP by changing the guest password (we also changed it in the IFSDavServletParameters.properties file and modified the ftpserver.def file by setting AnonymousPoolSize = 0 and AllowAnonymousConnections = false. We would like to do the same with 9iFS but these files no longer exist or have been renamed. What are the equivalent files in 9iFS or how else can we go about disabling anonymous logins?

  • Disable anonymous ftp in Solaris 10

    Hello,
I am trying to disable anonymous ftp on a solaris 10 server, but am having great difficulty.
I have tried adding the line 'guestserver' to /etc/ftpd/ftpaccess - this did not work.
There is no ftp account present in /etc/passwd
The inetd.conf entry for ftp is 'ftp stream tcp nowait root /usr/sbin/in.ftpd in.ftpd'
I have even tried adding 'anonymous' to the /etc/ftpd/ftpusers file
Anyone know how to shut anonymous ftp off, in a clean manner?

The former. (the last field corresponds to argv[0], argv[1]...)
Though I find it odd that if you don't have an anonymous account, you think that anonymous ftp is active. If you ftp the host, and use anonymous and a password, it lets you in? It seems that the normal behavior is that is says
331 Guest login ok, send your complete e-mail address as password.
REGARDLESS of whether anonymous ftp is active or not (it's just that you can't log in without an allowed password). One can argue whether or not this is a desired behavior....

I understand what you're specifically asking for, but could you provide some background on what specific requirement(s) you are seeking to resolve -- the requirement(s) here, and not the proposed solution here using ftp.
Are you are familiar with ftp attacks, if this is an open Internet site? Open ftp servers are malware magnets.
If you're trying to avoid having specific (known) users specify authentication, then there are ways to do that. Not the least of which is sftp with the public keys shared. There are other approaches, such as uploads via http-based sites.

  • Can't disable my FTP Access ports!

Hi. I'm running MacOS X 10.3.9 on a Mac Powerbook with all of Apple's latest Security Updates installed. I did a virgin installation and no other software programs has been installed yet, and I need to find out if my current indicated FTP settings in the built-in Firewall panel is normal or whether maybe my system has been somehow hacked or attacked by an unknown virus.
In my computer's System Preferences/Sharing/Services panel, all options are currently off, and none of the items are checked. In the System Preferences/Sharing/Firewall panel, all options are also unchecked. But even though I've unchecked all items and they're supposed to be off, my FTP Access port is still showing the description "FTP Access (20-21, 1024-65535 from 20-21). First question - this lengthy description about my ports seem strange. Does everyone else show this same description in Panther, or is it just me?
But even more strange and bizarre is when I hover my mouse over the same FTP Access description, a balloon notation will pop up with the following information . . .
. . . "Ports 20 and 21 on your computer are open for FTP. If others connect to your computer from ports 20 and 21, then ports 1024 through 65535 are open. When you turn on FTP Access in the Services pane, you also allow the service access through the firewall on the indicated ports. To stop access through the firewall you must turn off this service using the Services pane." . . .
Personally, I don't want any ports open on my computer. Therefore this notation seems strange to me, especially considering that all my ports are supposed to be "off", therefore why is this notation still indicating that ports 20 and 21 are open. Even more strange is no matter what I do and no matter what settings I change, I can't alter the configuration of ports 20 and 21 and make them show as closed. I've tried everything, but ports 20 and 21 still remain open no matter what I do, at least according to this message. Question - Is what I'm seeing normal for everyone or are other users showing something different?
Below is an image of what I'm talking about :

If the problem is still there, try booting into the Safe Mode.  Shut down the computer and then power it back up. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application unistaller. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don't do them all at once.

  • What about ftp-access from www?

    Hi folks,
first I want to say, I browsed the forum since May 08.
    Second please excuse my English.
I'm still trying to set up TC for FTP access from www.
afp works but what about ftp? -
I talk about ftp (RFC959) described in 1985! Why it does not work in a 2008 manufactured product?
I do not demand sftp but I never heard about a company that sells networking products which do not support ftp forwarding...
    Apple -that's poor performance.
Hundreds of users are still waiting for firmware update.
Please publish the firmware, if your lack of resources doesn't allow to solve this problem!
Does anybody has an idea to access TC from WAN?
    <Edited by Moderator>
    Thx

As you have mentioned that your ISP is an DSL provider, Login to the setup page of your Router and click on the status tab and check if the Internet IP address.
Have you enable the FTP feature on  your Router? If not then login to the setup page of your Router and click on the storage tab and below Enable "FTP Server" and let the FTP Port be 21 and below select the folder which you want to access it from Internet and click on save settings... Then click on the Administration tab and check for the "Server Internet IP Address" and also below check if Anonymous FTP access is it Enable or Disable. If you wish to allow anonymous Internet access then you need to Enable it or let it be Disable and click on save settings...
To access your FTP server from Internet note down the WAN IP, So it should be ftp://ftp.wan-ip:21. This should allow you to access your drive from the remote location.

    Hello,
Is there any possibility to set linksys E4200 for support anonymous acces to ftp server in read and write mode ?
    Thanks,

Nope, just anonymous read access only, according to the options they give you. 192.168.1.1--->storage--->administration----> anonymous FTP access (enabled)

  • Anonymous ftp does not list directory - Solaris 9

I've got 2 Solaris 9 systems set up for anonymous ftp access. One will show a directory listing, the other won't. AFAIK, I set them up the same, and the ftpd binaries have the same checksum. Anyone know how to permit the directory listing?
By directory listing, I mean either the '"dir" command in a command-line session or via a browser (e.g., ftp://ftpserver.whatever.domain)
Baffling behavior, and I can't find anything in Sun's docs to explain.
    Thanks.

  • WRT610N ftp Access

    Hello
How can i avoid password authentification when i access ftp from internet ?
I want that anyone can see stuff in my shared ftp folder without request for password.
    Regards

Hi! Usually, authentication is needed for you to access your ftp folder. But according to wikipedia, you can connect anonymously to the ftp folder/server if the service is configured to allow it. Quoting one of the paragraphs on this site: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File_Transfer_Protocol, A host that provides an FTP service may provide anonymous FTP access. Users typically log into the service with an 'anonymous' (lower-case and case-sensitive in some FTP servers) account when prompted for user name. Although users are commonly asked to send their email address in lieu of a password, no verification is actually performed on the supplied data. Many FTP hosts whose purpose is to provide software updates will provide anonymous logins.

  • Anonymous FTP User created by the system lacks the user name

I'm experiencing some problems and inconsistencies in the Mac OS X Server 10.4.7 FTP service.
First I'll report this behaviour to evaluate if it's worth a bug report.
I read in the that the user with user name 'Anonymous FTP User" and short name 'ftp' is created by the system the first time the FTP server is accessed using an anonymous user.
I noticed that the user is indeed created but its user name field is empty. It doesn't have the associated LDAP record, too.
If I try to manually create a user with an empty user name field WGM errors, so could this be considered a bug?

  • EA4500 and Non-Anonymous Disk Access

Purchased an EA4500 this weekend and overall it's working well. Running into what seems like a bug however with the NAS settings in firmware 2.0.37. If I enable "anonymous disk access" I can use the attached USB hard drive no problem, as soon as I turn off that setting and try to setup a user it's a no-go. Windows 7 reports that the device can not be found, and in fact the icon for it will immediately disappear from the list of network devices within a few seconds of changing the radio button and clicking "save".
It's behaving as if it's in a different workgroup than the PC's. I just have the workgroup set to the Windows 7 default of "WORKGROUP" and have the EA4500 set to the same.
Is this a known bug with this device and firmware combination, or am I missing something obvious?

By default, Anonymous Disk Access specify whether users have read-and-write or read-only access to the folder. How about if you try to map the netework drive after disabling that feature and see if the harddrive will be detected.
That's incorrect. When it is enabled, users on the LAN can access the drive without having to enter in the credentials of one of the accounts set up in the router.
When it's disabled, then users have to enter in the correct credentials of one of the registered accounts to be able to access the drive.
The read/write access in parentheses which you are referring to is meant to make users aware what privileges an anonymous user will have.

  • Setting Up Anonymous FTP

I'm filling in for a sick colleague, so some things are already set and shouldn't be changed.
FTP is already set for Home Directory Only. I need to add an ftp download point for anonymous users. For instance in ServerHD:WebSites:SiteA:Files, I want to provide guest access to the Files folder. The ftp root folder is inside the WebSites folder.
When I Enable Anonymous Access, all other ftp sites are visible via ftp clients. Is this unavoidable?
Secondly, how do I determine the ftp address of a file such as ServerHD:WebSites:SiteA:Files?
Thanks in advance for any help or suggestions.

When I Enable Anonymous Access, all other ftp sites
are visible via ftp clients. Is this unavoidable?
Anonymous ftp appears to be a disappointing shortcoming of OS X Server.
I resolved the issue by going to http downloads in this scenario.

  • Anonymous FTP, How Secure?

    All,
I am sending file to Anonymous FTP server from SAP. I like to know how secure Anonymous  FTP regarding files.
By using Anonymous FTP, i think we don't need any password.
In this case, anybody in the network can access the file.
    Please give your inputs.

U can configure the FTP to ask for login and password while accessing it. If it do not ask any uname/password, then it is called anonymous login. If FTP is configured for prompting username and password, then "Anonymous Login" checkbox is unchecked
    Or
this is a guet User ID
the anonymous login will use to have User ID as "anonymous" and enter the password as anything (any password will work).
this will always have guest permissions and will not be able to temper any of the data without permission.
the administrator can assign the required permissions and roles to this user ID.
    Reward points..

  • Ldap anonymous directory access

I have a PCI vulnerability titled "LDAP Anonymous Directory Access permitted" which I need to fix. I disabled anonymous binds in the props of the ldap server object in question. However I guess this was not the fix.
Is there a difference between anonymous binds and anonymous directory access? I was being told this is my problem - that bind is different than directory access so I fixed the wrong thing. I thought ldap was the directory access protocol, and bind was the connection being made to the directory using ldap. Ok. I'll quit typing now. any help is appreciated.

  • Limit FTP access

I've been trying to control FTP access, as have many others judging from the posts. When I access FTP, anonymous access is off, I can traverse up the directory to the root of my FTP servers HD and go into any folder I want.
Also changing the user environment from FTP root & share points, to the others and back doesn't seem to do anything. Everytime I log in using FTP I am in the users home directory and the other shares are not visible.
I tried installing PureFTP but uninstalled it because I wanted the Apple FTP server to work. I'm wondering if PureFTP did something crazy and broke Apple's FTP.
    TIA,
    John McAdams

Found out an interesting, maybe useful consequence of installing PureFTP Manager. The installation writes a complicated ftpaccess file that keeps PureFTP as the FTP daemon. Here's what happened. I installed & configured PureFTP Manager and added a few virtual users. Used it for a while and it worked great. I needed to open up the firewall for passive FTP clients. I shut down PureFTP and opened up the ftpaccess file.
Now usually when I open this file running Tiger's FTP server, the file is blank. This file had a lot of information in it. I added my passive ports line to the end of the file and saved it.
Back in Sever Admin I added the Passive FTP service to the firewall and decided to start up Apple's FTP to test it out. When I ftp'd in as a user in the local directory I was greeted with the PureFTP banner! Everything worked fine. Just to check I opened PureFTP Manager and sure enough the gui said that it was off. I tested the ftp configuration by logging in as a virtual user that I had set up in PureFTP Manager. No problem.
So now I can use PureFTP Manager and Sever Admin together. That means I get the controll of PureFTP Manager but the remote administration of Server Admin. Now I need a way to look at the PureFTP logs in Server Admin but I'm happy with it for the time being.

  • FTP access changed?? .. for 8iR2

Has there been a change in FTP access to the technet downloads? I have always been able to download the Oracle software from technet via ftp.oracle.com, and am intending on downloading 8ir2 for linux, but now ....
    Here is what I get:
    open ftp.oracle.comConnecting to 209.246.14.42...
    Hello, Welcome to ftp.oracle.com!

    Connected to 209.246.14.42.
    Cmd: USER anonymous
    530: User ftp access denied.
    User ftp access denied.
    Cmd: QUIT
This is a different message compared to having the FTP server having too many logged in users.
Is everthing now forced via HTTP? ... but I prefer using ncftp.
