Disabling audio on HDMI

Hello,
I have a 2nd gen Apple TV and I'm using HDMI for video and the optical out for the audio, witch goes through my receiver. However, the audio still goes through HDMI and goes out from both my TV and receiver. I don't want to turn the volume down on the TV each time I want to use my Apple TV, so is there a way to disable the audio on HDMI? I couldn't find an option that would let me...
Thanks in advance

If you have a newer model TV, there should be an option in the TV menu to turn off the speakers, as to just turning the volume down. I have one and that is what I do. Of course, you will need to turn them back on when not using the ATV2.

My audio connection runs from the headphone jack to my Surround receiver.  This works perfectly.  The HDMI cable runs from TV to PC. When I connect the HDMI cable to the Laptop, I get the video signal , but the audio to the surround is cut off.
What can I do in the PC menu to enable the headphone connection when the HDMI cable is connected?

It now gets the audio from the headphone connection.  Problem solved!

  • Audio to hdmi after W 8.1 update

After fixing audio in windows on my laptop with your solution (thanks so much!)....I still had no audio to hdmi cable and tv display.  Playback devices showed only Speakers/HP in listing.  I tried adding a second display device to no avail.  At one point I had Speakers/HP highlighted and showing as default, when i inadvertently right clicked on it and a menu popped up.
I t had an option to show all disabled devices , so i clicked it and Ouila!  My samsung tv showed on the list as disabled.  I enabled it and it set as default.  Tested fine!  Now my question is:  Can laptop audio operate independently and at the same time as the second display audio?  Just hoping my mom and I can each have our cake and eat it too.
    Thanks again for your help.

  • No audio from HDMI output because High Definition Audio Driver cannot start (Envy 17 Quad)

Ever since I first bought this laptop two months ago, the audio from the HDMI output has always been inconsistent. I remember it working a couple times, but there were more times when my audio driver didn't recognize that an HDMI cable was plugged in. Yes, I tried all the obvious: shutting down computer, checking disabled devices in Playback Devices, reinstalling drivers, etc. Now, when I plug an HDMI cable in, the video comes out fine but the IDT High Definition Audio CODEC does not recognize HDMI/my TV. The High Definition Audio Driver says it cannot start, but I could not reinstall nor find a download from HP's website. How can I get audio through HDMI to my TV??

  • Need help to transfer 5.1 audio via hdmi

    Hi, guys!
This is my first post, I would like to apologize for my bad english.
Today I received my new Mini DP to HDMI adapter and, after a little configuration, I was able to make it work properly with my mac.
But, after all my work, I noticed that the audio transfered was only stereo, not 5.1 as my home theater can handle.
So I searched some forums for a bit and noticed that I could try to change my configurations in "audio and midi configurations" (this is a portuguese translation, I'm not sure how is the program's name in english). Once there, I saw a lot of choices for audio via hdmi, like stereo, 5.1, 6.1 etc, but only the first was availabe, all mutichannels were disabled.
Is there any way to make these choices available?
Can this be a limitation of my Mini DP to HDMI adapter?
In the item description, it says that it does transfers "uncompressed audio such as LPCM" and
"compressed audio such as DTS Digital, Dolby Digital(including DTS-HD and Dolby True HD)".
    Thanks in advance!
    Cheers from Brazil

As far as I know there is no way to carry more than stereo over HDMI.
I know very little about this subject and have no experience with it myself, but I've been aware for some time of this adapter:
    http://kanexlive.com/products/iAdapt51.html
I take the description to mean that 5.1-channel digital audio can be carried by HDMI, and if the mini-Displayport doesn't output an audio signal that rich, the Kanex adapter should be a useful alternative. I've posted the link in reply to many queries in the past, but I don't recall whether or not anyone has posted back to say they've tried the adapter and tell how well it worked for them.

The other HD Audio device is likely to be the Realtek ALC880 8-channel High Definition onboard sound. This is a bit of a decision point. If you plan on always using the AMD High definition Audio as your default ouput through an HD TV with HDMI out, then you can disable the Realtek HD audio device. Once that is done then restart the PC. Go to the Control panel and select sound, now sellect the AMD HDMI out and right-click and select it as the default. There should now be a green checkmark next to it. Now you can select Configure to test it.
    Kind regards,

Ok, rc7 is out. Dave Airlie disabled HDMI Audio on rv710,rv730.
    Dave Airlie (9):
drm/radeon/kms: fix incorrect logic in DP vs eDP connector checking.
drm/radeon/kms: use active device to pick connector for encoder
drm/kms/radeon: pick digitial encoders smarter. (v3)
          drm/radeon/kms: release agp on error.
drm/radeon/kms: move radeon KMS on/off switch out of staging.
drm/radeon/kms: disable HDMI audio for now on rv710/rv730
drm/radeon/kms: make initial state of load detect property correct.
drm/radeon/kms: rs400/480 MC setup is different than r300.
drm/radeon/kms: fix r300 vram width calculations
EDIT: Further more, Jerome Glisse talked about future radeon development [1]
Coming up in the Radeon DRM for the Linux 2.6.34 kernel (or releases thereafter) is support for un-mappable VRAM, support for Evergreen GPUs (Radeon HD 5000 "R800" series), use of the Linux power management API for better suspend-and-resume support, better DRM power management, HDMI audio for R700/800 graphics processors, and improved GPU lock-up recording.
Therefore, Audio over HDMI is expected for 2.6.34+!

  • Does mini display port support audio to hdmi?

    hi

No, you need to run your audio separately from the headphone jack to an audio in port on the TV.

  • Kanex MIni DisplayPort+USB Audio to HDMI Adapter --NO SOUND

    Hi,
I just purchased a Kanex Mini DisplayPort+USB Audio to HDMI Adapter for my new Samsung flat screen so I could watch netflix movies. The guy at Tekserve (NYC based authorized dealer) said it's really cool b/c it's audio and video all in one. Two cables are attached to a small box on one side and on the other side of the box is for the HDMI cable which goes to the TV (most of you prpbably already know this) .
The two attached cables fit into the the USB (audio) + mini display port. The video works great, but no sound. I called Apple for tech support and we tried a few things like changing the sound output to USB, but no luck.
I can call Tekserve on Monday, but would love to figure this out before then for the week-end.
    Thanks everyone for your help.
    Mary

There are actually 2 different Mini Display port to HDMI adapters from Kanex. One supports 2 channel audio through the USB audio out cable, which is the one you have Mary. The other one with the extra audio plug cable supports 5.1 digital audio.

    http://kanexlive.com/products/item.aspx?id=3495
I don't have either of these adapters but I would think that you "should" be able to go into your System Preferences under Sound. If the USB plug from the adapter is plugged into your MacBook, then it should show up in the output window in the Sound preferences which you would then choose instead of outputting the sound to the built-in MacBook speakers.
At the bottom of the product description page of the adapter that you have (the USB 2.0 version), it says this:
+Sound Output setting on Macs must be changed to "USB Sound Device/USB Type" to have the adapter operating correctly.+*
Let us know if you get it working properly. I'm considering getting one also.
Sorry.... I just re-read your initial post and it sounds like you already DID try switching the sound output to USB with no luck. The only other thing I can think of is the adapter might be bad and maybe exchange it for another one from where you purchased it. Or you could maybe exchange it for the 5.1 digital audio out version. Although it sounds like your sound is going directly into the tv via HDMI and not a surround sound receiver.
Kanex does have tech support and contact links on their web page. Maybe you should email them directly about your problem. Unfortunately I'm sure you'll have to wait til sometime during the work week to get a reply back.

  • How do I disable audio on a pdf page when opening a link that also has audio?

    Hi,
I have a pdf page that has audio that plays when the page is visible. I set the "disable" audio to happen when the page is no longer visible. That works great. However, I have a link on the pdf page that opens an attached pdf page. I specifically want that linked page to open in a new window. It just so happens that the attached page also has audio. I cannot find a way to disable the first audio. As it is now, both audios play at the same time.
Thanks for any help you can give on this!

  • Split audio from hdmi

    Hi there,
I'd like to replace my first gen Apple TV with a new one.
The problem is the lack of analog audio outputs.
Currently I connect to my tv with hdmi and to my hifi with phono plugs.
The new Apple TV only has hdmi and digital audio out which my hifi doesn't ....
Is there a way I can split the audio out of the hdmi so I can play iTunes through the hifi with the TV switched off?
    Cheers Lizardpoint

I'm not aware of any cables that split audio from HDMI and in any case it would still be digital audio. You might want to think about one of the items below and use the optical cable.
DAC (Example Only - Not a recommendation or suggestion that this is suitable in your circumstances)

    Hello!
Speaking of info. - Please describe your system in some detail, and do not forget to mention the specs of your PSU. There is a sticker on the PSU box.
    Generally HDMI transports sound, yes.
    Thanks for the reply.
    My set-up is pretty simple.
Besides the new MB and CPU (which i got at a great deal on $115 for both) all the components are being recycled from other PCs.

I do not have a dedicated video card, and for my purposes i don't think i need one.
I would like this HTPC to output audio to a 5.1 channel system powered by Onkyo TX-SR507 Receiver through HDMI

Problem solved. Uninstalled all windows updates and display drivers. Reinstalled windows updates in groups of no more than 5 at a time, restarting after each group. Installed latest Intel display driver, restarted. Works like a charm now.

  • No Way to disable audio from Video in Photoshop CS6

I have a video clip that has an audio track that I want to remove, however it seems that the track specific "mute or unmute audio track" and "Disable Audio Playback" buttons only affect playback inside of Photoshop and do not affect the exported output. Am I missing something or is this the designed effect of these buttons? Is there a way to remove the audio track in the current build of Photoshop CS6 without going to something like Premiere Pro?
