Disabling boot to disk

Hello,
So I was going to install Windows 7 on a separate partition on my MacBook. I used the start up disk utility under system preferences and selected the disk to boot too. The installer isn't working correctly and I'm unable to eject the disk using the eject button. Now I'm in and endless loop booting into the disk and I can't get back into OSX. Is there a way to disable booting to the disk without being in windows? Please help! I need to have my computer functional by tomorrow
Lance

It's not working. I get the "dong" and a white screen. No apple logo. My keyboard also is not lighting up. It seems like the keyboard drivers aren't loading in time to pick up the key press

  • Boot Issue BIOS won't boot from Disk

Ok, heres my issue.  First I was having issue installing Win2k and found I had to disconnect my USB ZIP drive to boot (BIOS Option was disabled)(This is just a note).  After installing WIN2k on a WD300BB I was having no issues until I removed my Win2k CDROM disk.  At that point the bois (seeing the drive) would not boot (Insert a bootable disk error).  To get around this issue I created a bootable nt floppy disk to boot the hard drive.
I also attempted to do a fdisk /mbr with no help.  If i put the win2k cdrom into the cdrom drive and have one option to boot from CDROM it will boot from disk.  I do NOT hit a key to boot from cdrom.  I also cut wire 1 & 2 from IDE cable.
    Any other ideas?
    Thanks

Thanks for the reply,  the IDE cable is cut and there are no jumpers on the drive.  This is a bios issue.  If I boot from floppy to Win2k, this system works greate.  But it will not boot off the hard drive with out assistance.

  • HP 3500 MicroTower doesn't boot from disk!

We are facing a very strange issue with HP 3500 , the machine can't boot from disk ! only way to get it to boot is to pxe boot it.
Whenever it can't find a Pxe server to boot from it failed to boot from disk with an error that "No boot disk detected ... "
Disks are detected correctly in the setup/bios and quick smart check tests are passing successfully.
I have tried to disable the network boot but this didn't help as well, it indeed skipped the Pxe boot step but it still fails to boot from disk with the same error.
The OS installed on the machine is Ubunutu 12.04
    Note:
We installed extra 2 disks to this machine and 2 extra network cards as well , not sure if this is related but I thought it worth mentioning it.

Which keyboard layout you were using? German, French ... I suppose your layout is reset to the default: US and you are unable to find the "?" or "/" ...
Please have a look into the keyboard viewer, to see how the layout of your keyboard is actually.

  • Stuck in Windows Vista on a 2012 13' Pro with a Boot Camp disk error

I am at the point in installation where I have just completed installing Vista. So I inserted the Boot Camp disk I was instructed to make earlier, and I receive the error message:
    D:\
The application has failed to start because its side-by-side configuration is incorrect. Please see the application event log for more detail.
Fearing I did something wrong, I tried to switch back to the Mac OS sore, but of course I can't because boot camp hasn't finished its process. What can I do?

Vista is not supported on newer computers nor by Lion. No Vista drivers for the newer hardware and operating system. Read the documentation which states that Windows 7 is required. http://www.apple.com/support/bootcamp/

  • HP Pavilion dv6 Notebook PC unable to boot recovery disk

HP Pavilion dv6 Notebook PC unable to boot recovery disk.  First when I power on my notebook it goes straight to the launch recovery or launch Windows normally screen.  When I choose start windows normally, it goes to the window screen and freeze.  When I try to launch the start-up with windows 7 start-up disk, the computer will not load the files.  When I tried to complete a hard drive test, it failed with a failure ID 9UXNXA-55E65V-XD003G-60XR03.
I'm looking for a solution, can someone help?

    Hi:
It sounds like you need to purchase a new hard drive for your notebook, and reinstall the operating system with your recovery disks.
When a HDD fails a diagnostic test, it normally means it is done for.

  • Best way to set up a new ssd boot up disk

    Hello
I have an early 2008 Mac Pro running Snow Leopard, and am hoping to breathe some new life into it with some additional ram and an SSD for just the OS, Applications, Library and System folders.
I'm looking for advice on the best way to go about setting up the new boot up disk. I've read that it might be best to do a fresh install of the OS onto the SSD, so at the moment I'm in two minds about whether to do just that or to clone the existing disk and then delete the data I don't want on there.
Any help would be much appreciated.
    Thanks

  • Formatted Mac Os X accidently. Now wont boot from disk or hard disk. Help!

    Hello,
Last weekend I managed to stupidly and accidently wipe my mac os x part of the HD when it was meant to be for the partition I had freshly made for boot camp. Since the mac os x part of the HDD was formatted as NTFS, I now cannot boot to that and have been trying to get on to disk utility to sort this mess out... by booting to disk... problem is... it wont.
    Long story short.
After insertng the Mac Os X Tiger install disk and holding C it does not force boot the disk and all I see is a grey folder icon with a question mark which flashes several then vanishes... I've tried inserting the disk and holding the Option key, and C... and also tried tapping both option keys fast to no avail... the cursor appears however when I do both and it then freezes and the screen stays white.
Tried phoning Apple tech UK to discover i'm out of applecare cover and it'll cost me £35 to get incident cover for this incident. She then said at the end,.... you just need to get to disk utility and sort it from ther... problem is.... I cant get there.
Apologies for the mini-rant... I've just tried every solution and I'm still at square1.
    Thanks in advance..

    +Any other suggestions?+
You didn't mention whether or not it still sounds the start-up chime when you try to boot.
Also, will it boot to the Apple Hardware Test (located on one of the grey-labeled original system discs) - hold down the d key instead of c key. Has it ever run the AHT prior to this problem?
Were you successful at performing a PRAM reset? Only this will cure the iMac of its propensity to search for the old startup disk. Had you ever done one prior to this problem? If you can do that and then immediately switch to holding the c or d key, it must force a boot. Since all you need is for it to boot, you should have no external device connected to your iMac.

  • Custom icon for boot camp disk?

I have a Win XP boot camp disk partition (NTFS file system) on an internal hard drive. I want to use a custom icon for this partition on my OS X desktop. However, when I select the icon of this partition in a Get Info window, the only Edit option that ever appears is to Copy the icon. That is, I cannot paste another icon over it (the Paste option is grayed out).
Is this due to the partition being Windows? Is there a way other than the Get Info method for applying a custom icon? I'm using 10.5.2, but the same thing happened with 10.5.1, and also using a fresh test account.

Did you know you could have converted the drive to NTFS within Window (not reformatting and losing everything)? I converted mine from FAT32 to NTFS a few months back, lucky for me I already had a drive icon in OSX so the conversion kept the icon.
For your case though, do this:
    1) Paste your icon (in the Get Info window) onto a USB thumb drive formatted as FAT32. The name of the drive doesn't matter.
    2) Launch Windows through Boot Camp, Parallels Desktop, or VMware Fusion.
    3) Open the thumb drive in Windows.
    4) Select Folder Options… from the Tools menu, and set it to show invisible files.
    5) Copy the two files .VolumeIcon.icns and ._[cr]File, where [cr] is a carriage return, to the NTFS drive.

  • External boot up disk PPC versus Intel

I am currently travelling with an external HD that is a clone of my G5 PPC iMac. It has a fully functioning OS 10.4.11 on it and I can use it as a boot up disk.
I normally stay with a friend who has a PPC Mac, and can boot up using this HD so that it 'appears' as if I am on my G5. Then when I get home, I synchronise the HD with the G5 to bring the latter up to date.
This time I am staying with another friend who has an Intel Macbook. I am unable to boot up using the external HD. Is there any way round this so that I can somehow work with the external HD as the disk I am using and altering while I work?
    Thanks, Nick

For various reasons, I have not been able to have a go at this yet, but will have an opportunity to do so in early June.

Thanks for this clarification. I don't have Leopard (yet).
    BDAqua
The Intel Mac owner, who has OS 10.4.11, is certainly willing to set up a new account for me. When I travel, I wish to access three essential applications, Mail, Address Book and Safari on my OS 10.4.11-PPC-formatted external drive, so that I 'see' MY e-mails, e-mail addresses, and bookmarks. I assume that if I boot up using the Intel Mac and go into my new account on it, I will see no data at all for these three applications, unless there is some way I can import them from the external drive. Is this possible and if so how? Or perhaps the question should be rephrased as whether it possible to 'sync' the Mail, Address Book and Safari applications between the external drive and my account on the Intel Mac HD?
I'd be grateful for any further advice. Thank you.

  • Freeze while booting from disk

Hi everyone, long time Mac owner, first time poster.
I have a problem.  I have been the proud owner of a macbook pro 13' for a few years now.  Recently I have felt the need to upgrade my laptop to include more memory and a SSD hard drive.
Below is the series of events that has led me to the problem of freezing during use of the "boot from cd" method
    - Replaced ram from 2gb to 8gb (used apple certified ram and used crucials ram checker to verify I have purchased the right kind)
    - Replaced 160GB SATA hard drive with new Intel 320 Series 120 GB SSD
    - Attempted to boot from CD.  No hard drive was recognized (which is fine, I was looking to format it through utility) and the inserted "Mac OSX Disk 1" came up as an option.  I clicked on it, only to have the cursor lock up.  The CD drive then spun up to high speed for a few seconds, then quit.  The screen remained frozen for 15 minutes before i shut it off.
So then I tried the following setups to rule out error on my part.
    - New SSD hard drive with old RAM - No good, same results as above
-New RAM old hard drive - boots to desktop fine, no luck with boot to disk (**Note this includes holding down "C", "Option" or by accessing the disk through the dsesktop and utilizing the built in restart feature.  All resulted in freezing)
    - And finally Old HD & old RAM - desktop boots and acts fine however no boot to CD!
I realize I can clone the drive however was looking for a fresh start.  Am I missing any crucial steps here?  Any insight into this issue would be appreciated.

  • Folder with question mark + wont boot from disk

    Hi
I am trying to reinstall a powermac g5 from the disk, using a old hard drive that works.. (formatted in NTFS) (hoping that when selected to boot from disk, mac will then erase and reformat it)this image is presented when i hold down the option key and the disk ejects this other image is presented when i hold down C (folder with question mark blinking) and the disk ejects... also presented if i boot normally.... Could some help be offered please??????
    Powermac G5
    Thank you in advance

Yes, you must Format it HFS+ first...
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*

(To Install OSX on an IntelMac the Drive it needs the GUID Partitioning scheme mentioned at the bottom.)

  • How to disable user for disk encryption unlock

When I add an account that user is added to the list of enabled users when first booting a disk protected with Filevault2. I only want the master password to unlock disk encryption. I don't want to list admin or standard accounts. Is this possible?

This sounds like two different questions:
    1. I only want the master password to unlock disk encryption.
This isn't possible to my knowledge.
    2. I don't want the EFI bootloader to list all accounts upon first powering up the machine
Despite many customers' pleas, Apple has not changed the 'list all usernames' feature on first boot... however, waking from sleep, logging out or fast user switching to honor this request (when set in System Preferences).  There are several discussion forums previously attempting to solve this issue, but no concrete solution yet.

  • IPod 5g, sad face BUT boots into disk mode

Hey everybody, I have a iPod that my uncle brought me, he says it's his sons, but he doesn't need it. This ipod boots with apple logo, hdd making clicky sound, and then a sad face appears for about 4 seconds and shuts down. If I try holding center and play buttons, it does boot into disk mode, but before that it says that I have to connect it to the computer to restore it, but itunes doesn't recognize it. But computer does. is there any way to fix it?

The Sad face icon is usually a very good indication of a hardware malfunction or failure usually with the iPod's Hard Drive, which would also explain the loud clicking noise you are hearing.
Have you seen this article yet?
