Disabling CD/DVD-ROM

I am working with a media company.
I have around 50 numbers of I-Mac and MacPro PCs with me.
All the systems are inter connected for news purpose.
Now a days I find, people are misusing the CD/DVD Drives.
They are just loading unwanted films and other such stuff.
Which causes unwanted situation for the IT Dept.
We IT people are in need to stop working of the CD/DVD-Rom Drives.
Anyone who helps me out, I will be very much thankful to her/him.
Thanks and Regards,

I´ve got the problem, that some instances are still running while I´m trying to unload.
Terminal in-output:

Failed to unload com.apple.iokit.IOSCSIMultimediaCommandsDevice - (libkern/kext) kext is in use or retained (cannot unload).
Can anyone help me how to terminate the running instances?
Next question:
After reboot I can do some kextunload. But The Devices are still working for CD,DVD. Why?
reboot after kextunload doesn't work.

  • How to disable DVD rom?

Hi, I have a Cd stuck in the dvd rom drive, I brought it to Apples but there's no way to get it out unless they dissect it. I don't want to do that. But every time on start up and wakes up it makes really loud noises for a few minutes. I have changed the option in system preference to ignore when cd/dvd's inserted but it still tries to run the disc. Is there a way I can disable the dvd rom completely?
    Thanks!!

go to this links http://www.powerbookmedic.com/ they have pdf files of how to disable everything in you powerbook
Aren't those guides for hardware replacement versus disabling the DVD drive from the startup sequence, which I believe is the OP question?

  • Dvd-rom drive

    Help!
I loaded itunes onto my pc using the cd-rom in the box for the 30gb video ipod, but it disabled the dvd-rom / cd-rom drive.
Any ideas on how to fix?
    Thanks

    Hi
look @ newegg.com; you can get a DVD burner for under $40, so plain DVD-ROM should be more like $25-30.
Check owner reports @ xlr8yourmac.com's "Drive Compatability" page on specific vendors - pretty much anything name brand (Pioneer, LG, Panasonic, LiteOn) should boot an OS installer CD/DVD. Sony is very iffy on Mac support, so I personally would avoid their products..

  • H520s Windows 8 DVD-ROM disabled and error 19 - registry corrupt Help please!

Hi all and hoping for help with H520s, 64bit  OS Windows 8. Error message showing  problem with DVD-RAM Mat**bleep**a SW820; this is disabled in the device manager, and I can't use the DVD drive as a result. (yellow triangle)
Have tried windows fix utility on pc ; drivers are up to date. Have disabled, enabled etc. But it's still error 19
This was working perfectly until a couple of days ago when Microsoft ran a mega load of updates, including critical windows 8 updates. Am wondering if there's some conflict?
Have searched the Lenovo solution centre for up to date drivers for the dvd-RW but there aren't any. Don't really want to uninstall the DVD-ROM drive and attempt reinstall unless can definitely reinstall and can't find anything that reassures me I wil be able to do so.
Wondering if Is this similar to another issue on Toshiba pcs where it seems, according to various searches,  it was a corrupted registry entry due to conflicts with pre installed pc rescue type utilities?
I'm no IT expert and the idea of registry fiddling is not reassuring.

  • CDRW/DVD Rom drive disabled by Panther

Looks like same problem as dozens of others, but no answers. After upgrading to 10.3.9 the Sony CRX820E is hiding. Toast titanium says "no CD Recorder found" CD's show up in finder but not DVD's. (it is a DVD Rom drive)
Anyone find a fix for this recurring problem or do we just write it off to "progress"?

The entire computer is 6 years old almost 7, and it worked fine until recently.
Maybe its to do with the new power supply I put in, I put a 750 watt power supply in to replace my 250 watt, because I recently got a new graphics card.
the power supply is plugged in correctly, and my system tells me the drive is there, it just won't read DVD discs.
I'll give a run down of how putting the new power supply in went:
    1) I found out that the plug I would need for my floppy drive was required by my new graphics card, so I took the IDE cable out of the Floppy drive and motherboard, and plugged the power supplies plug into the graphics card.
    2) After a problem with my computer not being able to find either the DVD Writer or CD drives, I found the problem was a loose IDE cable, which I promptly put back in place, then my computer was able to find the drives.
    3) Afterwards I changed my BIOS a little, I changed it so it wouldn't try to find a Floppy drive, and changed the sequence of booting the system from having the floppy drive boot first to the DVD/CD drives boot first.
    4) I started up my system and popped in a disc for a game, 3 different times the drive refused to work, 3 different times I found a solution that got it to read the disc, then afterwards if I put a different disc in it wouldn't work, and the fix wouldn't work a second time.
I hope this helps answer me, but here is another question. Can a device be plugged in to any IDE port on the motherboard? If so, is it possible using the IDE cable to plug the DVD drive into the port the Floppy drive was plugged into might help?

  • Sunblade 1000 will boot from CD-ROM or DVD-ROM

I have Sunblade 1000 with a pre-installed Solaris 8 OS. I originally purchased the workstation without a CD-ROM. I bought an old Sun 411 CD-ROM. After installing the 411 CD-ROM, I entered "boot cdrom". Somehow it will not boot from the CD-ROM drive. When I do a "probe-scsi-all" I will often get "fatal scsi errors", but sometimes the SCSI info will be displayed, bizzare. When I type the explicit or long device name with the boot command, it still will not boot. After looking for solution in the Internet and exhausting a few UNIX friends from my questions, I called Sun. According to Sun, the only compatible CD-ROM for the Sunblade 1000 is the DVD-ROM, which is OEM by Sun,and usually ships with this workstation.
After, getting over the shock that Sun sold the Sunblade 1000 without providing backward compatibility, and suffering the humiliation of spending much need company resources for a potentially useless CD-ROM, we broke down and bought the DVD-ROM.
After spending $500 dollars for the DVD-ROM, the Sunblade still cannot boot from the DVD-ROM. If I boot from the disk, and after the system comes up, the DVD-ROM shows that it is mounted, I can browse it's content, etc.
I currently have the Solaris Installation CD in DVD-ROM drive. I also tried booting off the Solaris 2.51, and 2.7 CDs. Here are some info that comes back when I entered the various commands:
    ok banner
    SUNW, Sun-Blade-1000 (UltraSPARC-III), Keyboard present OpenBoot 4.0, 512 MB memory installed.....yada yada
    ok boot cdrom
Boot device: /pci@8, 700000/scsi@6/disk@6,0:f File and args
    boot: cannot open kernel/sparcv9/unix
    Enter filename[kernel/sparcv9/unix:

Fatal SCSI error at script address 8 Illegal instruction
    Thanks in advance,

I'm quoting from an old usenet article from Tony Walton
    (@...sun.com)
    http://groups.google.com/groups?q=solaris+probe-scsi-all+reset+auto-boot&hl=en&lr=&safe=off&site=groups

You should only run probe-scsi after the hardware has reset
but before it's initialized to start running Solaris (you
might get away with stopping then running probe-scsi early
in the boot sequence, but that's only a matter of luck,
    really).
The recommended sequence is to disable autobooting if it's
set (so the machine won't boot itself automatically after a
PROM reset), then reset the hardware, then probe-scsi, then
re-enable auto-booting (if it was enabled in the first
    place).
So, go to the ok prompt, then
    setenv auto-boot? false
    reset-all
    probe-scsi (or probe-scsi-all)
    setenv auto-boot? true
    reset-all

Operating System: Windows XP home edition
Nb. Two DVD drives connected master & slave on IDE2
I have an unusual situation. Please help. I have run out of ideas.
    Dilemma
    1. I boot up my system.
    2. I click to enter my desktop environment (3 other users share this PC).
    3. My system starts to load my processes.
    4. While loading the processes my DVD drive door(s) shoots out in the open position. Sometimes both shoot out together and sometimes only one.
    5. If I go into my windows explorer, I notice that the drive letters for the two drives are missing. I then have to reload them by using “my computer” management area. If I do not do this my applications will tell me that no drive exists. I have a DVD ROM and a DVD RW.
    Other observations:
The drives never go missing in device manager. The drives only go missing in windows explorer if the DVD doors open. Sometime the doors may stay shut and everything is well. Sometimes the problem is frequent and sometimes it seems to have gone away.
    Been there done that:
    1.   I unloaded all DVD burner software
    2.   I changed the IDE ribbon cable
    3.   I unloaded the CD/DVD drivers and rebooted
    4.   I disconnected one DVD at a time and rebooted.
    5.   I checked for viruses using Norton 2005 (with latest definitions)
    6.   I checked my application/disc integrity using Norton Win Doctor
    7.    I Joined this forum for help

    Update:
    10.   I swapped around the cables going to the IDE ports on the motherboard. Switched ROMS to IDE 1 and switched HD to IDE 2
    11.   I dismounted the virtual drive in CD Anywhere manager.
Problem disappears after I “only” completely remove cd Anywhere:
I completely removed the cd Anywhere software. Also using cdacleaner.exe and removing the registry entries as instructed by the supplier. The problem did not return.
    Stop the clock –solution found.
I have an application called CD Anywhere that starts up at the beginning of loading. Only after I disabled this process that the problem with the DVD drives ejecting was resolved. I contacted the supplier about the problem and they furnished me with a fix, so far so good, everything is working fine. If you are wondering what CD Anywhere is, it’s a virtual drive software for convenient loading of  CD images without the hassle of physically loading the original cd. Its supplied by a company called Vcom.

  • Satellite L505D-S5983 - CD/DVD-ROM issue

    Hello.
I have a Windows 7 Home Edition laptop that will not boot from the CD-DVD-ROM drive. Under normal circumstances, I know that if the boot order is right, the computer should automatically boot from the CD. However, it instead refuses to acknowledge any bootable disks I have in there at all. I have tried from Super Fdisk bootable CD to Linux Mint 9 Live boot CD version i386. My computer seems to just skip over the CD_ROM entirely and immediately boot from the hard drive.
However, it can still read CDs and DVDs perfectly. I have no problem burning items on a CD or pulling items off. I also have no problem playing games or movies that require a CD or DVD.
    Solutions I have attempted:
Changing the boot order. Nothing changed.
    Creating new CDs. Nothing Changed.
Gently cleaning the drive. Nothing changed.
Pressing the left and right arrow keys during the POST. Though it did throw me into the screen in which I choose what I want to boot, my only option was Windows 7 in the end.
Checking the Device Manager. My drive is working perfectly according to my computer.
Changing drivers. Updating wasn't possible as I already had the latest drivers, rolling back wasn't an option because there wasn't anything to roll back to, and disabling and enabling changed nothing.
Is there anything else I can do? I'm trying not to buy a new drive, as I'm short on money. I'll do it if I have to, but if I don't have to...
Thanks for any help or advice.

  • Bought DVD-ROM Drive and still not better....

I have spent money to upgrade the DVD-ROM on the G3 and still the picture is no better.
I know you guys like to send articles, but they really don;t help somebody who knows very little about the computers. Talk to me, give me directions like I'm a 5-year old.
Why is the picture not running fast enough? It's jumping from shot to shot, no matter what DVD is in the machine.
How do I fix this? Is there a program out there I should download?

Thanks for the replies so far. I have inserted my answers with the >>>>>>> preceding.
Just to make sure you are booting to 9.x (and I am sure you are), opening About This Mac under the Apple menu should display the Mac OS 9.2 logo.
When I startup my computer, OSX shows up. I guess I am booting to OSX.
If nothing is under the Apple menu except Preferences, there may be some problems with your OS. There is also the possibility that the former user modified/simplified what items load in 9.x because he wanted a simple OS9 to run as Classic when booted to OSX. I am reluctant to ask this question, but are you clicking on the Apple itself or possibly one of the items in the menu bar like File, Edit (has Preferences under it), View, etc?
I think when I installed OSX to do my newspaper thing, I set it to automatically boot up to OSX.
Assuming you are missing the items under the Apple (and Preferences should not be there), try this:
    1. Open the HD icon in the top, right corner. You should see a window with these items:
Believe it or not, there is not an HD Icon on my desktop. There is an icon for OSX and one for OS9. I clicked on the one for OS9 and went to the control panel and did what you said with the extension manager, but it said it couldn't be changed and wanted to know if I wanted to make a duplicate copy that could be changed. What?
Anyway, I went there and tried to do what you said to do and the DVD I put in still is not running right.
    Applications (MacOS 9)
    Applications
    Desktop Folder
    Library
System Folder (this is the System Folder for 9.x)
System (this is the System for OSX)
    Users
    2. Double-click on the System Folder (not System) to open. You should see a long list of folders, one of which is the Control Panels folder; there will also be a Control Panels (Disabled) folder under it. When you open the Control Panels folder, look for the Extensions Manager and double-click it open. You will see a list of control panels...open the Extensions Manager. At the top of the Extensions Manager window, you will see a 'Select Set:' drop-down menu; select MacOS 9.2.2 All. If there is no Extensions Manager, it should then be in the Control Panels (Disabled). Now close all windows, then restart the computer.
If you now have items under the Apple menu, proceed with the suggestions proffered in my earlier post. If items are still missing, please post back.
The only things I have under the apple menu (which I am checking the one in the left-hand corner on the top-- don;t be afraid to ask me anything, it won't offend me) are system preferences, software update, mac osx software, system preferences, dock, location, force quit, sleep, restart, shut down, log out.
    That's it.
Perhaps I'm not doign something right? Got any other suggestions? Remember, I am not too smart when it comes to these things. Don't be afraid to tell or ask me to do anything, even if it is simple.
Question: Do you have a MacOS 9.x CD?
No. I did not get anything but the computer when I bought it off of eBay. Do I need one, and if I do, where do I get one?
    Thanks and reply soon.

  • HP Envy 15 Won't boot from external dvd rom

    Hi All,
My HP Envy is brand new (Envy 15 j151sa). The external DVD drive is brand new (HP dvd600). My model of the Envy does not have an internal CD/DVD drive
I want to boot from a live DVD.
I've read other posts and answers for similar queries and followed the suggestion.
On boot press F10 (BIOS setup) and the Boot Options settings are as follows...
    a) Secure boot  - disabled
    b) Legacy boot - enabled.
    c) Changed the legacy boot order to have the USB dvd rom as first in the list.
    Save the setting.
    Restart the PC.
    On boot press F9
Displays the availabe list of devices (3)  to boot from as
    OS Boot Manager
    Boot from EFI file
    Notebook harddrive
There is no option to select the external DVD rom drive.
I have upgraded the BIOS to the latest HP recommended version.
I don't know what else to try.
I could really use some help now.
    Thanks
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

Your external DVD drive is operatying as it should.
The best place to find an answer on how to make the live CD is at the Debian forum. The disk you made apparentlydoes not have an MBR bootsector or a recognized EFI partition. Either of those is what is needed for the disk to be bootable and your notebook  BIOS must be configured accordance with the choice of format type.
Personally I have always preferred using a utility like UNetbootln  to make multiple "live" bootable Linux versions.
I don't bother with the hassle of DVD or CD media any more.
If you have a spare 32 or 64GB usb flashdrive, then you can put an incredible number of versions of Linux and troubleshooting utilities on it.
The economy of scale with usb flashdrive has gotten to the point where a 16 GB usb flashdrive is less expensive that DVD recordable media. Check out the prices at NewEgg.
Get your preferred version of Debian AMD64 live iso from here.

  • Is it normal for a dvd - rom to be detected as a cd - rom ? ( Note:problem since new 2005)

intermittant ahum.... so after a time i upgraded the cd-rom-rw to a dvd-rom-rw to solve the problem. once all was well i swaped locations of the 2 dvd-rom so the writer is at the top. always things work when first discoverd. but after some time not so much. since then..... i have also upgraded OS to windows 7 from xp sp2/3  . worked just as desribed above. been through the mill with the fixit and manualy upper/lower, enable -disable ... only thing i can think of is licenseing that pops into action stopping use. and i'm not doing any illegal downloads or copy protect etc..  i just watched matrix on dvd 2 piece movie and when switching to disc 2 it would not continue. what happens ?

    Hi,
I don't think that the laptop is powerful enough to handle blu-ray disks. I have checked the specs for a dv6910us and there is a D2C AMD 2GHz cpu and nVidia 7150M which is a very poor config for playing BR disks. Blu-Ray players are supported on Intel based full featured dv6700 series laptops which might suggest that it would be the same on dv6900 series laptops.
