Disabling dashboard and spotlight.

Is there a way to exit these programs until I actually want to use them? I'd like to get some extra speed out of my eMac for use with other things, and I'm sure these running in the background aren't helping too much. Can anyone suggest anything for this? I'm sure there's probably a way to do this, I'm just Mac stupid. Any help would be appreciated!

Disable Dashboard
You don't note in your profile which OS version you're running; search the site in the first link for "disable spotlight" and pick between OS X 10.4 and 10.5 links.

How to disable the dashboard and sportlight function in the latest Mac OS?

to disable spotlight, open the terminal and type "sudo mdutil -a -i off" without the quotes. ( You will be prompted to enter your admin password.)
    to disable dashboard:
Open Terminal, and then type this command, followed by the Return key:
defaults write com.apple.dashboard mcx-disabled -boolean YES
This tells the system that you no longer wish to have Dashboard available. However, the Dashboard task is actually “owned” by the Dock, so to make your changes take effect, you need to restart the Dock. The easiest way to do that is to type this command into the Terminal (and press Return when done):
    killall Dock
After the Dock restarts, hit F12 and you’ll see…nothing at all. If you run Activity Monitor, you also won’t find any Dashboard widgets in the list of tasks, even if you had several open when you ran the above command.

  • Mac wont shut down, log off, restart, dashboard and spotlight not working fro

Hi I keep getting this problem..
I cannot log off, restart, or shutdown randomly. I am using Leopard v10.5.7, with all other updates. Also I cannot get dashboard or spotlight to start off the keyboad shorcuts.
I have to hold the power butt=on for more than 10secs to shut it down, which I do not like doing.
I have repaired permission, stopping apps staring automatically on log in. removed all cables to reset SMC etc etc.
It doesnt happen all the time, but sometimes it does. Reason I have to close my Mac down is my wife and kids use Boot Camp with Win XP on.
This is now starting to annoy me, can someone please help, I've had my Mac 18months now, 1st one ever, so am still learning, especially when things go wrong or dont work, as I didn't expect this on a Mac!!
    cheers

    HI,
Try booting from your install disk and checking the hard drive for errors.
Insert Installer disk and Restart, holding down the "C" key until grey Apple appears.
Go to Installer menu (Panther and earlier) or Utilities menu (Tiger and later) and launch Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.
Select First Aid in the Main panel.
*(Check S.M.A.R.T Status of HDD at the bottom of right panel. It should say: Verified)*
Click Repair Disk on the bottom right.
If DU reports disk does not need repairs quit DU and restart.
If DU reports errors Repair again and again until DU reports disk is repaired.
When you are finished with DU, from the Menu Bar, select Utilities/Startup Manager.
Select your start up disk and click Restart
While you have the Disk Utility window open, look at the bottom of the window where you see Capacity and Available. Make sure there is always 15% free disk space. Not enough disk space can cause directory corruption.
If you cannot boot from your install disk, try booting in Safe Mode

  • Disabled dashboard dock is all white and looks different?

I was tweaking my Macbook Pro with Mountain Lion and I removed the Dashboad to add performance and now the dock is solid white. I think It was more transparent before. I dont like it. How can I change this back? Anyone?

Thanks mhadjar, Yes I beleive so. I was following the tweaks here for using Traktor.

    - Disable Dashboard to speed up the system significantly
To disable dashboard, open Terminal, and then type this command, followed by the Return key:
    # defaults write com.apple.dashboard mcx-disabled -boolean YES

Re-enabling did not change the color back, it is still disabled. I dont use it...

  • UNIX Commands to disable Expose and Dashboard

Teacher looking to block/disable Expose and Dashboard on iMac 2.2 gHz running 10.6.1
I use ARD 3.2 and want to use a UNIX command to disable features on the students computers. If you know other Commands, maintenance scripts, permissions, etc..those would be helpful as well.
Thanks for your time and help.
    David

    Hi David
    To disable Dashboard:
defaults write com.apple.dashboard mcx-disabled -boolean YES
You have to restart the Dock afterwards:
    killall Dock
You still have to tear Dashboard off the Dock although you could amend the com.apple.dock.plist If you wanted to? Amend the persistent-apps tile data settings. To re-enable Dashboard at a future date:
defaults write com.apple.dashboard mcx-disabled -boolean NO
Restart the Dock again with the same command.
Not sure if there is a command to disable Expose? I think some of its settings can be found in com.apple.systempreferences.plist? If it looks like it has what you want you should be able copy it either using the Copy feature in ARD or sending a Unix command like cp (man cp) instead.
Alternatively apply the plist to an OD Group as a managed preference assuming you've an OD environment?

  • How can I temporarily disable dashboard

While trying to install new version of Adobe Flash the installation process gets halted and displays "Disable Dashboard" to continue.
    How do I accomplish that?

Use Terminal to disable the Dashboard. Go to Applications>Utilities>Terminal
Once you have the window open in Terminal copy & paste this command to disable it:
defaults write com.apple.dashboard mcx-disabled -boolean YES
Then, restart the Dock using the following command:
    killall Dock
If you want to enable your Dashboard again simply replaceYES with NO in the top command and repeat the process.

  • Disabling Dashboard

I teach graphic communications in a high school and I would like to disable Dashboard. I have the brand new 20" Aluminum iMacs (i.e. New style keyboard). I have tried to disable the keyboard shortcuts but the F4 button still opens Dashboard. I have deleted Dashboard from the Applications folder and the Dashboard still opens. Any advice on how to disable this thing?

Try the methods documented on this page.

  • Disable sound and/or vibration while in Messages app?!

    Hi!
I would like to know is there some option in the iOS where I could disable sounds and vibration while I'm using Messages app (app is open and the display is turned ON and I can see the message I recieved). This is very annoying when I'm using iMessages and getting a message every few seconds and then my phone vibrates constantly. It is of course OK if I'm not in Messages app but when I'm already using it I don't need a notification I got a message when I can see it for myself.

I'm having the exact same problem. I get a random text message ding for no discernible reason at least oncer per day. No alerts from apps, no email, no texts, no missed calls, no voicemails. It's not changing connection types between wifi, 3G, and edge. I know that the first gen iPhones sometimes dinged in that situation. If anyone knows what's causing this I would love to hear it.
Just to be clear I'm using a perfectly normal, not jailbroken, iPhone 4 running the latest software version.
    Regards,
    John G.

  • Question regarding Dashboard and column prompt

My question regarding Dashboard and column prompt:
    1) Dashboard prompt usually work with only for columns which are in subject area. In my report I've created some of the columns which are based on other columns. Like I've daysNumber column that is based on two other columns, as it calculates the difference of two dates. When I create dashboard prompt I can't find this column there. I need to make a prompt on this column.
2)For one of the column I've only two values 1 and 0. When I create prompt for this column, is it possible that in drop down list It shows 'Yes' for 1 and 'No' for 0 and still filter the request??

    Hi Toony,...
I think there was another way of doing this...
In the dashboard prompt go to Show option > select SQL Results from dropdown.
There you need to write your Logical SQL like...
SELECT CASE WHEN 1=0 THEN PERIODS.YEAR ELSE difference of date functionality END FROM SubjectAreaName
Here.. Periods.Year is the column which is already exists in repository's presentation layer..
and difference of date functionality is the code or formula of column which you want to show in drop-down...
Also write the CASE WHEN 1=0 THEN PERIODS.YEAR ELSE difference of date functionality END code in fx of that prompt.
I think it helps you in doing this..
Just check and inform me if it works...
    Thanks & Regards

  • How do i disable bullets and lists in pages?

pages is beautiful, but i have never been able to use it as my primary word processor for one simple reason.  I make staggered outlines constantly, and it ALWAYS tries to auto format them.  I've decided to try to make Pages my only word processor, but i must find a way to disable bullets and lists in order to be able to do that.  to be clear, i need to be able to type things like the following without any auto bullet-ing or listing by pages.  i want to do i my own way, without help--
    I.  Something
         A.  related
         B.  also related
    II. Something else
         A.  blah
              1. speaking of blah
         B.
I would greatly appreciate any help anyone could give me to help me stay in control of my own outlines while using pages.
    I use OS x 10.9.3 and Pages v. 5.2 (1860)
    thank you in advance.

I installed a new SSD drive in my computer and now Adobe Creative Suite Web Premium says I don't have a license. I have license. It was very expensive. I am disabled now, and I need this software working. Adobe Acrobat has been a primary tool for accommodating memory problems after a brain injury. (A car ran me down while I was out getting exercise.) I installed the SSD because I needed my management of PDF files to run faster. I called tech support for help when the software first stopped working, but they needed me to give them a number from my original disks. Because of my disability, I've been having someone come in to clean, and the shelves where I kept my software packages were cleared. I've been hunting for them ever since, but I can't look for them myself for very long at a time. Today I finally found them, but now I can't seem to contact tech support. What happened? I don't want to delete my old files because I need the setup to remain unchanged, because I don't do well with changes. I think all I should need is to have someone located the license file on drive E: and move it to wherever it is needed on the SSD drive, but I don't know what to look for.

Tech support is not normally available on weekends.  You should contact them as soon as the weekend passes and pick up where you left off with them.

How do I disable podcasts and genius on iPhone 4s? I find them annoying?

Are you talking about imessage?  If you receive a imessage with a bunch of other number included, best way to reply is to send a new text to the sender, so that way only that person receives the reply and not the whole group.

Have you been trying to download from the app store? Did you get a message?
As a suggestion, you might go to an Apple store (genius bar appointment) for help. As far as I know, there should be no charge.
