Disabling default function keys

Hey everyone,
Long time mac user, just got a new Imac. Can't figure this one out.
On my new slim keyboard, F12 turns my audio all the way up. How can I bypass this? In Dreamweaver F12 is the "preview in browser" shortcut and that is a bigger priority to me than the volume control. I tried using the system prefs to assign F13 to this function. It shows up in the Dreamweaver menu, but it doesn't work. Any help is appreciated.

Yup - go to Keyboard & Mouse, but NOT to the Keyboard Shortcuts tab. Use the Keyboard tab instead. Check the "Use all F1... etc as standard function keys" so you get the F keys to ignore their special functions and become available for other assignments.
As the pref pane notes, pressing the Fn key and an F key will then let you get to the special functions of those keys.
What it doesn't note is that Fn will reverse the checkbox setting. So, you can leave it unchecked and the Fn key + F key will release the F keys from their printed functions and make them available for other uses.
Of course, with QuicKeys, you'll want "empty" F keys to start with, so you'll want the box checked. (this is something we've been dealing with on laptops for awhile, it's only an issue for more users now that the newest standard keyboards behave this way.)

  • HP Pavilion tx2500z - Default Function Keys not working

    I have a HP Pavilion tx2500z (model: KD436AV) laptop with Windows 7 64 bit OS installed. Since last few months, I am not able to use default function keys (F1, F2...F12) and other keys at the top row of the keyboard, including Pg Up, Pg Down, Home, End, Insert, Delete. However, all the Action Keys available on these keys are working without pressing Fn Key (e.g. Sleep, Brightness, num lock etc). I get same Action Key behaviour even after pressing Fn Key.
    It looks like, somehow system is locked in action key mode and I am not able to come out of it. I tried to upgrade Bios (currently on latest F.0F version) and also tried to disable the Action Key mode in BIOS, but Action Key mode is not available in BIOS of this computer. Even to enter BIOS, I faced problem because F10 key was not working to enter BIOS setup. I had to connect external keyboard to enter BIOS.
    I am disperately looking for help to come out of this situation. Any help will be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hello,
    An idea for you would be to test the keyboard in a different enviroment ro see if it's hardware or not.
    We can check the keys by booting into the recovery partition and opening a command prompt.
    Power down notebook
    Press power button then tap F11 until the screen says recovery at the bottom left or says Windows is Loading files. If it shows a different menu on your screen you may have press it too late or continues to load Windows you may have an issue w/ the partition.
    Next when it loads into the menu choose an option so the program is slected. I select "System Recovery" then at the next menu press FN+SHIFT+D
    At the commpand prompt window that pops up test the keys w/ issues.
    I am an HP employee.

  • Disable Default function of "Back" button for Android.

    Hi there!
    I have tried SO MANY methods to PREVENT the default function of Back button in Android but no success
    This is one of the codes I have used with no success:
    stage.addEventListener(KeyboardEvent.KEY_UP, optionsKey, false, 0, true);
    function optionsKey(ke:KeyboardEvent):void
          if (ke.keyCode == Keyboard.BACK)
                ke.preventDefault();
                ke.stopImmediatePropagation();
              //Do my own code below...
    I am using Flash Cs6 , Air 3.2 for Android , Testing it on LG Google nexus 4.
    When I use the flash simulator, it works fine! Means the Back Button, let the App go back to previous step (as I expect it to do)
    But after I publish the apk (Aspect ratio: Auto , Auto orientation , Render mode: GPU), as soon as I press BACK, it minimize my app!
    (means when i press the Back button on my phone, the App minimize down (not close!). when I re-activate it/click on it, I see the app has actually gone one step BACK (as I programmed and expected), but I just CANT STOP the default action of MINIMIZING/De-activating my app after pressing Back button.
    Anyone have any "Fla" file that I can see it in ACTION please?!
    Because I have used many-many codes and no success yet
    thanks and looking forward for your any kind of hlep...

  • Disable touchpad function keys not working Ideapad u410 Windows 8

    Hi there
    I'm on the verge of returning my new U410 which, despite reviews indicating the contrary, has a very frustrating touchpad that the palm sensitivity adjustor does not fix.  In fact I don't think it adjusts the sensitivity one iota.
    So I've read that Fn+F6 or Fn+F8 should allow me to disable it while I'm writing, but they do nothing.  I'm working in Microsoft Word, if that matters (it shouldn't though, right?).  I'm on Win8, computer is brand new and I installed the latest touchpad driver but must say it never launched or I never saw it launch (I'm not sure it should, or if it should just be in the background).
    Between that and the worst wireless problems ever, not to mention that the heavier graphics card apparently does nothing to improve video performance, I am tempted to return this.  So frustrating.  Please help if you know about the touchpad though, being able to disable it would go a long way!

    hi bwrightd,
    Regarding your concern:
    1. If you have the same keyboard layout like in this picture (hotkey mode disabled in the BIOS) then you just need to press the key below to enable/disable the touchpad.
    Alternatively, you can also use Touchfreeze to automatically disable the Touchpad while typing.
    2. For the wireless issue, you may wanna check this thread as other users found it helpful to resolve the issue.
    3. For the video performance, try the following:
        a. Set the power settings to high performance (Link to picture)
        b. Configure Nvidia Control Panel's "Power management mode" from Adaptive to Maximum Performance - see this guide
        c. Follow this guide on how to add an app to use with the Nvidia Optimus Technology.
    Hope this helps

  • MacBook Air default function keys

    On F5 and F6 there is a designation to decrease and increase something.  I'm getting the feeling that these keys are not available on the MacBook Air, in fact they are not present on my bluetooth keyboard I use on my Mac Mini.   I am curious what there function would be and what device they are used for?

    F5/F6 keys are there to decrease/increase keyboard backlight.
    There are some models of Macbook Air that came without keyboard backlight.
    So those keys are not "functional" in those models.

  • Disabling Function Keys in Select Applications

    Long ago in an OS far away, I knew how to disable the function keys so I could map them as I chose in my mappable apps. I know this was — at the time — a terminal command, but I just can't remember it. I would settle for knowing how to do that again, but what I would really like is the ability to either quickly turn on and off the Mac default uses for the function keys or, better yet, have it turn off in certain apps.
    I've tried the "Use all F1, F2, etc. keys as standard function keys," button in the Keyboard & Mouse System Settings, but I don't see where that has any sort of effect. The reference there to the 'fn' key makes me think it's only for laptops. Do I have to restart the app or the computer? Will that do what I'm looking for?
    Any help?
    Thanks,
    Martin

    yes, it does have an effect. it lets you use F-keys as regular keys and map them to what you want.
    The reference there to the 'fn' key makes me think it's only for laptops.
    no, this is for any keyboard that has a fn key. if you have it on your keyboard then you get that checkbox in keyboard system preferences. if you don't have it the checkbox won't even show up. when the box is checked you have to hold fn to get the functionality of the F-keys written on them. otherwise they act as regular keys that can be mapped to whatever you want. you can do this in system preferences->keyboard&mouse->keyboard shortcuts.

  • Function key defaults are not working

    I've ran into an issue where the default function keys no longer work.  The F1 key for instance does not decrease my brightness, nor does F12 increase my volume.  All of the function keys will produce a "thump" sound from the Macbook Air, like I've typed a bad keystroke, or an invalid keystroke for a text field.
    What I've done:
    1. The "Use all F1, F2, etc. keys as standard function keys" is Unchecked in System Prefs
    2. Rebooted, and cold booted many times
    3. I've reset PRAM and SMC many times (probably 10 each)
    4. I've clean installed OSX Mavericks and the stock install shows the same symptoms.
    I'm hesitant to believe this to be a hardware issue because the keys themselves will work if I manually set an action for them (a custom shortcut to open an application for instance).
    Has anyone else seen a similar problem or know of any other things I can try?

    See if a Safe Mode boot helps.
    Startup your Mac in Safe Mode
    A Safe Mode boot takes longer than a normal boot so be patient.
    Once you are in Safe Mode, click Restart from the Apple () drop down menu then try the keyboard.

    I see that you are having some problems accessing your BIOS. F10 doesn't work with Windows 8. If you scroll down in your own link it mentions that to access the BIOS you need to go to your Advanced Options and then select Troubleshooting and then the UEFI Firmware Settings. That will bring you to the BIOS. This is all under Accessing UEFI BIOS section of your link. There you can Disable the Function Keys.

    I'm using Vista Ultimate 32 Bit with SP 2, I tested my memory and hardrive and there is no problem with it.  If I disable my antivirus the function key works, if I enable my AV it causes the BSOD.  It seems that there is a conflict with the Hardware setup and the TVAP issue.  I have the latest ones, but it seems that Toshiba won't come out with new drivers to fix this problem.  The only thing I can do now is disable my function key.  But I don't know if there is anything I could do.  Maybe modify the registry or something.  I cannot remove my AV as well.  I'm using both the Internet Security of it.

  • Disable Function Key F3 in Internet Explorer

    I would like to disable function keys F1 and F3 while playing
    my flash movie in internet explorer. I am using these keys within
    Flash to do some actions.
    I got the script working for Function Key F1 using the
    following script
    <script language="javascript">
    document.onhelp = function() {return(false);}
    window.onhelp = function() {return(false);}
    </script>
    But unable to make it to work for function key F3.
    Thanks in advance,
    Desmond

    Hi des_shun, I have workaround for this issue.
    First thing we have to do is disable keyboard event for F3 key on HTML document so that even if focus is on html document, default Search functionality will not popup. Next thing is, flash must contain KeyboardEvent listener for keyboard response. This is where we will keep our custom F3 functionality. This setting works well on Chrome & FireFox.
    Now IE thing.
    The prolem with IE is that if any one of F3, F5, F6,F7 & F11 key is pressed, when the focus is on flash movie it directly executes the default browser functions like searching, refreshing etc never allowing flash to execute its keyeventlistener. But if focus is on document body, then F3 and other keys work fine.
    Here is the catch.
    All we have to do is whenever focus is shifted to flash, we should revert that focus to document body.
    Here is how we can do this.
    Capture the MouseClick event in your flash movie. Then in this mouseclick event handler, call  javascript function to change focus to document again. Below is the sample code.
    //Flash Code
    stage.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK,mClick);
    function mClick(event:MouseEvent)
              ExternalInterface.call("changeFocus");
    // Javascript Code
    <script type="text/javascript"</script>
              function changeFocus()
                             document.body.focus();
        </script>
    Thats it!

  • How to disable "special" f-key function on Apple Wireless Keyboard in Windows 7

    Hi.  I dual-boot my iMac using an Apple Wireless Keyboard.  In Mac OS's "Keyboard" system preference pane, I've chosen to treat the F-keys as actual F-keys, and not the "special" function keys, such as volume control and screen brightness.  This however does not carry over to the Windows environment.
    I cannot find an option to do this on the Windows 7 side.  I've tried SharpKeys (popular Windows freeware key-mapping registry editor), however the program doesn't recognize the key being pushed (unless I hold the "Fn" key, at which point, it sees it as the F# key).
    To reiterate, I'd like to know how to use the F1 through F12 keys as F1-F12 in Windows 7, without having to use the "Fn" key.

  • Is there a shortcut to switch F keys from default utilities to traditional function keys?

    So as most of us certainly know, latter-day OS X default has the F-keys programmed to handy shortcuts like volume and screen controls, dashboard toggle, etc. There are a few programs I use that require switching to the more traditional function key format, and I was trying to figure out if there was a way to streamline that process so I didn't have to go into System Preferences/Keyboard then check or uncheck the appropriate button every single time. If there isn't, I would submit to Apple that it would probably be easy and definitely awesome if they could program a fn-lock function (like hitting option-⌘-fn or someting like that) to swap key configurations. But maybe there's a way to do that already? Or a way to script a macro or something?
    Granted, going into system preferences to check that one checkbox isn't hard, it's just a pain to have to constantly do and undo.
    Thanks!

    The following script should do what you are asking for:
    tell application "System Preferences"
        reveal anchor "keyboardTab" of pane id "com.apple.preference.keyboard"
        tell application "System Events"
            tell process "System Preferences"
                click checkbox 1 of tab group 1 of window "Keyboard"
            end tell
        end tell
    end tell
    Using FastScripts (free for 10 keyboard shortcuts), you could even assing a shortcut to the above script.
