Disabling EDGE vs. using a fake APN

Does anyone know if there is a difference between disabling EDGE vs. leaving EDGE on and using a fake APN?
What I mean is, does one drain battery faster than the other? I still need to leave 3G enabled so I can make 3G voice calls, but I don't want internet. I know both methods will disable internet, I'm wondering if one is preferred over another?
Thanks

Hey mate. Here's the deal:
In Sydney we are able to purchase our iPhone outright with no plan and use it pre-paid, factory unlocked. So I did that, I don't have a data plan and I use data sparingly as they charge $2 per mb, so I just use it as needed very rarely.
Yes I am on a 3G network, my phone will switch from 3G to GPRS or whatever it is by itself. If I'm in a 3G area it will use that.
By disabling EDGE and leaving 3G enabled, I can not use the internet. It says no connection is established, which is good! I don't want to use my data.
The other way of disabling data is by using a fake APN and leaving EDGE and 3G on.
However I read somewhere that one will cause a massive battery drain, and I want to know through people's experiences which method is preferred to get the best performance. Both methods block data for me and still allow 3G for voice calling.
Unfortunately I can't call my provider as a pre-paid customer and block data.

  • May I know how to prevent my iPhone from using data? [I've tried fake APN]

    Greetings.
I'd like to see the help of the community, for this problem has persisted for a month plus. Being unable to use my prepaid credit and having it deducted for no reason can be a little frustrating.
So here's what I've done so far.
    1. I've updated my iPhone 2G to the latest iOS, the 3.1.3
    2. I've googled my problem and found a few solutions (like iphonenodata.com and unlockit.co.nz) however they were of no help to me.
    3. I've called my carrier, and they've helped me blacklist my number under GPRS to prevent cellular data usage, however the problem still persisted. To my surprise.
So, my question is.. why is it that the problem persists after having to take so many actions? I've noticed on the blog on which I found the information regarding the iphonenodata.com that some users still have this problem even after installing it.
Is it because the fake APN does not work for iPhones with iOS 3.1.3?
Are there any known solutions to preventing cellular data usage for iPhone 2G with iOS 3.1.3?
Please help me, thank you very much for your time.
Btw, I live in Malaysia. Just in case the carriers in other countries can actually fix this problem.
P/s : I know for a fact that this is a common problem and that the community may even be exasperated by how many people who'd actually start a new thread and all, but I do ask of you to take 5 minutes just to help me out? (: it will be very much appreciated.

    Thank you for the replies.
Yes Michael. It is still deducting data charges despite the fact that they've told me they have disabled cellular data access. My previous carrier (I've switched carriers, just to try my luck.) even had an investigation team for my case, however, the solution that they came up with was to refund my credit deducted (which they claimed was only RM2.10, but I didn't make a big fuss about it) so that I can monitor my prepaid credit for any further data charges. The minute they refunded the amount, instantly RM1.80 was deducted. It was deducted so fast that I didn't even get to see my credit go up to RM2.10, it was instantly RM0.30.
I'll make a call to my carrier tomorrow regarding this issue. My previous carrier couldn't solve the problem, and didn't do any follow-ups. However, in the event that they cannot help me, what do you suggest I do?
    Thanks again for your replies.

  • Satellite P50T-A016. how to disable edge swipe gestures

    Hello,
I have Satellite P50T-A016 laptop runing windows 8.1 and I'm attempting to turn off the charm bar. After researching various websites/forums, it appears the charm bar is hardwired into windows and Microsoft provides no option to turn it off directly.
These websites/fourms also suggest disabling edge swipes gestures will indirectly turn-off the charm bar.
After I de-select "control pannel -> mouse -> enable edge swipes" and reboot the laptop, edge swipes are still being detected.
Why is edge switpes still enabled?
    How to disable edge swipes?
    Regards
    Graham

    > I have looked at the link. It is address multifinger gestures and sensitivity. I also noticed that the link leaves the "Enable edge swipes" option selected. So I'm not sure how this link helps.
The link and the HowTO helps you to find the touchpad Synaptics settings!
It shows you where to disable or enable settings which would be also related to the touchpad edge swipes.
    > Regarding the charm bar, as a desktop mode user of windows I don't use it. The only time I have used it is when I have inadvertently turn it on when I switch between mouse (default), touchpad and touschscreen. It just get in the way even when hot corners are disabled.
Well, buddy you are not alone with this opinion but this is how it works and Microsoft decided to design the Win 8/8.1 system in this way
    > When the "Enable edge swipes" option deselected then right-edge gesture on the touchpad no longer triggers the charm bar opening. Great!,
Thats right and this is how it works
    > However, the right-edge gesture on the touchscreen is still enabled.
Dont mix touchpad with the touchscreen! The edge swipe settings in touchpad are NOT related to touchscreen!

  • Apple please provide way to disable Edge but enable WiFi

I am planning a trip outside the US. I have read the posts about people who spend a week abroad and come back to an outrageous AT&T bill because of the international Edge usage charges (sometimes even incidental). I called AT&T and yes they have an international data plan but for a 1 week trip I would have to pay $25/month for a year or pay a huge cancellation fee. Another attempt to gouge their customers. So that is not an option. How can I use the wireless on my phone without using edge?? Airplane mode turns off both. There is no way to enable only wifi. How can I do something as simple as check for messages without edge? How can I safely use just wifi at the hotel or other hotspots? I don't want to have to leave my phone in airplane mode for a week but until apple provides a way to disable edge while enabling wifi I most likely will have to.

    take paperclip...
    unfold paperclip...
insert paperclip into small hole next to headphone jack...
    eject sim card...
remove sim card and place in safe spot...
    return metal tray to phone...
enjoy using wifi & iPod features of phone...
reverse process to re-enable phone & edge

  • Blackberry Curve 8520 how to disable Edge and surf on WIFI only

    Hi,
Could anybody help me to disable Edge network on vodafone and only phone connects to WIFI when using internet on Blackberry Curve 8520.
    It would be great help!

Just turn off Mobile network. Uncheck the box. Doing that means you can't make phone calls, though. That's the only way. If they're both on and a wifi connection is present it is supposed to use that first but some say it still uses mobile data sometimes.

  • Disable EDGE alternative to calling ATT or removing SIM

Another way to disable EDGE (and all phone service) for international travel without calling ATT and without removing the SIM is to set a SIM PIN. When you turn your phone off and back on, you will get a message that says "SIM LOCKED" with 2 options. To use your phone, select "UNLOCK" and enter your PIN; to disable your phone, select "OK", the SIM will remain locked, but all non-SIM functions work, including Wi-Fi.

So, if I understand this, when the sim is locked, you can't make phone calls but if you can connect to a free wifi network (maybe from a hotel or the airport), you should still be able to check email, yes?
If the SIM is locked, can you still use the SMS functionality?
I'm traveling to Namibia in about two weeks (thru France and South Africa) and have contacted ATT several times about disabling edge (the right hand definitely doesn't know what the left hand is saying) so this might be an alternative so I don't come back to one of those horrific phone bills with my IPhone.

  • Disable EDGE on Blackberry Curve

I have just bought a Blackberry Curve for my girlfriend, and with her SIM provider she has no data package. As a software developer who has never used a blackberry before, I was shocked to find that the device flips between EDGE and WiFi almost randomly, and then when you go to "Disable data services" it disables Wi-Fi as well! I think I must be missing something here, how can I disable data services except for Wi-Fi?
The only way I can see how to do this is to go to Manage Connections > Mobile Network and turn off, however I don't think that's a very good way to use a device, and my gf will probably just forget and rack up a massive bill.
Please help me out, as I said I'm new to blackberries. If I can't do anything else I guess I will try calling O2 and have them disable EDGE on the phone.

  • Remove Disable-EDGE-3G fix iPhone 4

When I restart my iPhone 4 the disable edge 3G setting will appear because I used that on my iPhone 1 witch profile has been transferred to my iPhone 4. I can fix it but it will appear after every startup, how to remove forever??

There is no such option, but you have direct control over the new apps that you download from the iTunes app store and when, and the same for downloading app updates.
If you mean for internet access with an app that requires and uses internet access, the same applies. Don't use an app that requires internet access or restrict its use when connected to the cellular network for internet access.
You can also disable cellular data at Settings > General > Network > Cellular Data > Off. This will prevent internet access and the download or upload of any data via the cellular network with any app that requires it.
When have you exceeded or even approached 5GB of data access via the cellular network in a month?
I've been using an iPhone for what is approaching 4 years this summer and I've never exceeded 1GB of data in a month nor have I been very close to 1GB of data in a month. 600-700MB, but never exceeded 1GB. I wouldn't worry too much about exceeding 5GB in a month.

  • Disable Nvidia Card Using Bumblebee

    Hi,
I had Nvidia Optimus disabled through BIOS but it seems their is a neat way to disable Nvidia NVS 4200 in Arch using Bumblebee which is very helpful as I am still setting up my Arch system and use windows and nvidia card. Nvidia card adds another 5 degrees of heat to my system and I would like to disable it when using Arch.
I installed bumblebee and bumblebee-thinkpad_w520_t520_t420 from AUR. I have added bumblebee group. bumblebee and dkms is in daemon category of rc.conf and nvidia and acpi_call is in module section. I get following error when loading nvidia module.
    modprobe nvidia

  • Travelling to Canada...how to disable EDGE?

Heading to Canada for a few days. I plan to do the following to save money but don't have a perfect solution yet for EDGE
-phone calls - my wife has north america plan from legacy network so all my calls are auto-forwarded to her cell (which is a us number). eats into my minutes but no long distance or roaming
-for email I will have some wifi access. but how do I disable the edge part so emails don't come in through edge? even if I set the request email frequency to manual or every few hours when I do access them with wifi I have no guarantee that they will not first look to the EDGE network and cost me money. Is there anyway to shut off the phone/edge part so I just have wifi?

You have to call AT&T and ask them to disable Edge for the time that you'll go, there's no other way. I went to Canada for 5 days, checked some e-mail, some maps, not a big deal, got a bill for $749.00, so I learn my lesson the hard way so you won't have to.

How do you disable "FILE IN USE" pop-ups so you can actually edit and delete PDFs?!
I continue to have a pop saying that either the file in open somewhere in the serve- which it is not- and I cannot delete a particular pdf or edit it.
It's incredibly frustrating and in the end I end up having four files with different names because it won't let me edit the original file!!!!
