Disabling OpenZone & FON

Bit of a strange one,
We got infinity 13 days ago and have been experiencing wireless drop outs for the last 5-6 days, ive looked at the connection settings in the hub and it says its been connected for 5 days so its definatly the wireless thats playing up, its not just my laptop that loses the connection, 2 others do and trying to play CoD on the ps3 is a nightmare. all equipment still stays connected to the hub, just without internet connection for 1-2 mins.
Ive tried all of the channels and used the wifi channel software to select a free channel thats around my area, ive made all the equipments IP addresses static and still to no joy. all i can think of is that the bt OpenZone and FON, which is being emitted (correct me if im wrong) from the hub at the same time as the internet signal, is conflicting and causing the wireless connection to drop.
We didnt opt into FON or OpenZone but ive read that new customers are automatically opted into this service. is it worth opting out to see if this problem goes away or should i go down other routes so solve it?
Any help welcomed

With regard to your wifi woes:-
In their infinite "wisdom" some technophobe at BT has decided that, apart from subjecting you to 2 networks you don't want or need, they will automatically put them on the same channel as your own network, creating interference between them and causing none of them to work properly.
Unfortunately, this affliction is common in the telecomms industry, where the "bright ideas" of the marketeers come before customer experience and little thought is given to practicality and effectiveness.
"automatic channel selection" is marginally better than the defaults of most routers (channels 1,6, and 11) . . . or at least it would be if it worked.  While few other channels were in use around me (verified using 2 network sniffers on separate PCs) it happily chose channel 6 (a bad idea at any time for the reason given above) when there was already another network present on that frequency and none at all on several channels including all of 2-5!! (ideally you want to be 2 channels away from any other network with high signal to noise ratio (SNR))
To then cause channel congestion by placing 3 separate networks on the same channel from the same router with the same signal strength is utter lunacy.
Congrats BT - another result from the ministry of **bleep** design!

  • MY PHONE WON'T CONNECT TO BT OPENZONE FON BECAUSE OF BLANK POP UP PAGE

Hi I have an iPhone 5 and I am trying to connect my phone to BT Openzone FON
When I try to connect to the network a pop up appears where I have to fill in my details so I am able to use the internet connection
But for a while now whenever the pop up appears when I try to connect to BT Openzone FON or any other network that requires the pop up and ask for my details always appears with a BLANK PAGE!!!!
Every time the page appears I wait for a little while to see if it eventually loads but then a second pop up appears which is a message and the message says
    "ERROR OPENING PAGE"
"HOTSPOT LOGIN COULD NOT OPEN THE PAGE BECAUSE THE SERVER STOPPED RESPONDING"
Please could someone help me and solve this problem for me!

    Hi statics101,
The tips in this article: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1591 will usually resolve any issue that would cause the iPhone to not show up in iTunes on a Mac.
Make sure your iPhone is directly connected to your Mac.
If the issue persists, try reinstalling the latest version of itunes. http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/

  • Btfon email can't disable bt fon

I dont have a btmail a primary email, i did not get one when i got bt, and if i make one i cannot disable bt fon, please help,
    what can i do? thanks

Can you give more information about what you are trying to do.
Do you have a BT email address such as [email protected]?
Do you have access to MyBT ?
Do you use a BTID ?
Is your BTID a [email protected] email address or a different email address?
Are you wanting to stop BTWifi-Fon from transmitting on your Homehub?

  • Bt openzone/FON connection issue

Ok so I often use this specific btopenzone wifi hotspot, used it for a couple hours every now and again for ages. Hit a problem now though my laptoop no longer connects to it. it sees it i click connect but it just keeps coming up no internet connection. Help/ This is the only wifi thing that it dont connect to.

It could be down to the hub2 (if this is being used) as there is a known issue whereby it caches ALL passing wireless devices which then jams the hub and stops the connection to Fon/Openzone - a reset of the hub is the only known cure, though BT are rolling out an update to sort this out.
The other thing is that occasionally and I don't know why, we lose the ability to connect to random hotspots. Without any changes, the ability returns after a few days. Keep trying the same hotspot or as I said earlier, try another one to see if you also can't connect to this one. What about your own hub's Fon/Openzone hotspot, can you connect to this?

  • Openzone/Fon doesn't work

I Have just written to customer care, and will cut and paste here to see if anyone can help.
I have enabled BT FOn on my homehib on my pitiful 1,5mb connection in the hope of using openzone and Fon networks when i'm out and about.
In fact this is one of the reasons i was stupid enough to sign up to a 18month contract.
I have the Android app on my smartphone, and it connects about 50% of the time while i'm out and about.
The real issue though is the fact that neither Openzone or Fon work on my laptops. It appears to be fundamentally flawed.
On the Dell inspiron, i can connect to Openzone about one in a hundred goes.
On my Acer, i can't connect AT ALL.
Have tried internet explorer, Chrome and Firefox, on both machines.
I have tried setting the connection to both public and home.
I have tried putting the openzone website in the browser bar, but nothing works.
I'm more than happy to upload both machines attempting to connnect on YouTube if you wish.
The problem is that when you "connect" to the openzone or fon connection, it does connect, then says "no internet connection" and the browser bar just shows a DNS error.
What is the point in having a btopenzone internet connection, with no internet connection.
Please for the sake of my sanity explain how i go about getting the service (that i'm payng for) working.

The wifi advertising hype is fair enough if you are away from home with access to a known hotspot, but it's a pretty unreliable service if you want internet access on the fly. 3G, either on a mobile phone or through a dongle, is a far better option but potentially expensive.
Having said that, if you're a BT BB customer you should be able to connect readily to a working BT hotspot. Can you specify any that are problematic? Bear in mind that the "millions" of BT home user hotspots are useless if the user has the hub switched off, has it sited in an outside toilet with walls 2ft thick, is using a non-BT router, is using up the bandwidth themselves, or has forgotten to pay their BT bill. On the other hand, I find commercial BT WiFi points (mainly Starbucks or wifi-enabled phone boxes) to be very reliable. You don't need to be a BT BB customer to access Starbucks though, so I guess that just leaves the phone boxes!
Personally, I would say that wifi access on the move is no more than a small bonus for BT BB customers; I certainly wouldn't advise anyone to regard it as a major reason to choose BT.

I have recently purchased a Samsung galaxy S wifi 5.0.  When I try and access the internet I get the Btopenzone URL and the fon home page. I cant seem to get any further access other sites. How would I solve this problem please. I have cleared the history, cookies but it still happens. There is no search box on the fon home page.

Once you've signed in, click menu and select new page. You should then be able to surf the internet
Or why not connect direct to your home hubs SSID, no need to use BTFon/Openzone.

  • BT Openzone & Fon Access?

Following the announcement that there is now no limit accessing the two I tried it out at home on my hub, both the openzone and Fon access points are available but I am unable to connect, iphone and laptop are not being given an IP address, both work 100% when connecting to my own SSID.
I have previously been able to connect, however this was when we were capped at so many minutes.
Fon web page still showing me as opten in.
Is this a security issue so I do not use them on my own home hub? need to ensure it works for a trip I have planned.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi Alexander and welcome
So you opted out on the BTFon website and then opted back in?
And the hub doesn't show you as active?
Don't panic!! Opt out again and then back in, wait 72 hours and see if it then shows this time.
(sometimes the hub doesn't get sent the opt in signal on the first try)
As a side note: Even though your hub is not showing as active, it doesn't stop you from using other hotspots
    Thanks tried this.
Phoned and my router is getting updated this should fix it.

  • BT Openzone/FON Problems on iPod

    Hello.
About 2 weeks previously, BT Openzone worked fine. I switched to using my home hub (also a bt product).
When I swapped back to BT Openzone, it would take several restarts for it to "connect".
After it "connected", the internet would not work saying that there is no connectivity. Meaning that even though my iPod says i'm connected and gives a strong bar signal it is not connected.
    Perhaps I'm missing something?
    Thanks,
    Chris.

Can't even get it to show the false connect icon any more. I click "BTOpenzone", it marks it with a tick (meaning it's connected)
I then wait...and wait...and wait...and nothing happens. After 6 restarts the false connection icon pops up.
I then go into Safari and it says it cannot display the page because I'm not connected to the internet.

  • BT Openzone/Fon

I am using the iPhone app to try to get mobile wifi and the hotspot finder says there are about 10 hotspots within about 200m of my location but my phone isn't picking any of them up - I have never yet been able to get mobile BT except at home where I use the hub anyway - anyone got any ideas how I can use the mobile wifi please?!!

  • Fon & Openzone Difference

I want am about to disable my ‘Fon’ service.
Does that mean I will not be able to use my free Openzone minutes when out and about at airports, hotel’s etc ? Because I have opted out of fon ! Or be able to log onto Openzone with my account. Details on BT’s site are ambiguous.
Also, what are the advantage of ‘Fon’ I can’t see any for me as an individual subscriber to BT broadband and of the 15-20 other neighbours BT networks I can see around me none of them have ‘Fon’ switched on.....maybe they are all using my ‘Fon’ !
I heard that I will have to reset my HH2 (soon to change to HH3) to clear out 'Fon' ?

Those are provided by another WiFi company, normally "The Cloud". You get free limited access with a voucher code, but you normally have to register with them first.
I've used BT Wifi at Starbucks and John Lewis with my BTBB details, but Joe Public can also join in through a registration process.  I'm also registered with The Cloud, and yes they do provide free hotspots (eg Wetherspoons, Little Chef, railway stations) but not at JL and Starby's.

  • Cannot access Openzone or Fon sign-on page

I have BT Infinity Option 2 and am opted-in to the BT Fon community (I have checked this) and I want to use Openzone/Fon on an upcoming trip so tried testing it here at home.
I can see both Openzone and Fon on my list of available networks, and can connect to both with a strong signal (probably from my own HH3!).  However, neither option gives me Internet access so I am unable to load the Openzone login page to enter my BTInternet username and password.  I'm guessing it's lack of these that is causing the lack of Internet access, but that's a chicken & egg situation!
I'm sure my hub's internet connection is not maxed out because the only other computer using it in the house is the one I'm typing this on, and I'm not downloading anything.
Can someone tell me what I'm doing wrong?
Using Win 7 32-bit, IE9 on a laptop (which works fine with my normal BT Infinity connection)
Hubby has also tried on a Linux netbook, with the same problem.

Nah, I doubt it's BTNP blocking as other forum users have other AV installed and they still can't connect.
If I'm honest, I'd have to say that the bug on the HH2 has now made it into the HH3
[BT to insert a comment at this point?]
If you really want to, a factory reset of your HH3 would prove this, though you lose any user changes to the hubs set up.

  • Fon and openzone on same hub

im just wondering if i should be seeing both openzone and fon on my home hub wireless conections when i look for wireless conections , am i right in thinking it should just be 1 or the other ?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

OK.  Irrespective of which phone you have - 'old' or a T2/Hero - was there a point in the set up with BT software (of the 620/710) or the configuring of wireless connectivity with the T2/Hero where you could have selected Openzone/Fon as your primary Wi-Fi network, and not your home hub (I assume your hub wireless key is also displaying as being 'available.'
(There is a known issue with the 620/710 using the BT software about trying to connect to your hub following a BTOZ/Fon connection other than in the home, but stick with the above first).
If during setup, you selected Openzone as your primary connection and not your hub (or have changed the wireless key of your hub/or have a new hub subsequently), this could account for it.
Without star gazing too much, the other option at this stage is to simply reset your hub, and then see what happens.
There are other possibilities as well I'm afraid.  Its not a connectivity issue, more a functionality one I venture to think, interesting (but let me assure you, not without precedent).
    AQ.

  • BT Openzone-H etc.

I switched on my WiFi adapter on my laptop this morning and decided to give BT Openzone/Fon a try out for an hour, by paying £3 by text etc. I got immediate connection after putting in the code supplied and enjoyed about 38 minutes of fast intenet access but then it suddenly stopped and that was it.
Interestingly for some period of time after that and when my hour had expired, i sitll tried to connect with BT Openzone/FON etc but my computer said that it couldn't connect to either and it is only just now when I got home from shopping that I find that I can now connect again and get their homepage. Is this usual as it said that the signal strength is Good/Excellent.
Similarly after the sudden cut off this morning I tried to get both the above using my Android table and my Android phone and another laptop but none of these could connect.

If you're a BT customer and opted in to BTWifi (formally BTFon) then you get free access anyway.
The random drop outs are very common, that's why I gave up a long time ago.

  • Connect sequence with Cisco VPN & BT FON

I have an issue with the connection sequence using Cisco VPN & BT Openzone/FON
