Disabling Second Display

I have an old video card installed on my machine that allowed me to connect a TV monitor for video editing. Using OS 10.2.8, the second display would only appear as a second display if I actually had an S-Video cable connected to the card. This was important to me because whenever I had the second monitor connected, video perfomance would be affected on my primary monitor. So when I wasn't using the TV monitor, I would simply disconnect the S-Video cable and my screen and my video performance would be top-notch.
I just upgraded to 10.4.3, and I noticed that there seems to be no way to disable the option of a second monitor, despite the fact that there is no S-Video cable connected to the second video card. This is causing my video to suffer on my main monitor.
Is there any way to disable the second display? I don't even want it to show up as an option.
PowerMac G4 867MHz   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

I looked under each of the tabs in the Display panel (dispaly, arrangement, and color) and there is no option for detecting displays. I know for certain that there is another display detected, since it shows up in the Arrangement tab, and I can gather the windows from the second display onto the first.
The only workaround I can think of is removing my second video card. But that is inconvenient, you know? I'd rather leave it in and have it disabled until I need it, like I could do on OS 10.2.8.
Is this something that might be solved by upgrading to 10.4.5? I'm a little hestiant, based on what I've read in the forums about all the crashing and kernel panic...

  • How to disable a second display from being auto-detected

I have a 30" ACD and a 24" Dell hooked up to my Mac Pro, and most of the time I find myself only using the ACD. I normally keep the Dell powered off, but SL still detects its presence This actually creates a problem, because I invariably lose the cursor every now and then when my mouse strays off to the phantom display's side.
I don't want to have to keep unplugging the video cable on the second display to make it go away, and I don't want to keep it on constantly, only so I can know where the cursor is at all times. BTW, mirroring does not work, because the resolution on the 30" is reset to 1920x1200 (i.e., the lower of the two displays). I know I could get a KVM switch, but I'm hoping there is some setting in OS X (even if only accessible through Terminal) that can stop my Mac Pro from detecting a display that is actually turned off.

I use SwitchResX to disable one of my 24" ACD's when not needed. The program actually works quite well.

  • How to use the second display for installation OS in my vertical lines iMac

My 17" iMac display is full of vertical lines, it is unuseable. Does anyone know how to use the second display for Mac OS X or disable the first display for installation Mac OS x ?

Go to: *System Preferences > Displays* and select the Arrangement tab, then relocate your Menu bar by dragging it to the other display.
Unfortunately there is no Hardware or Software switch to turn off the iMac's Internal Display.

Here are the specs for your Compaq Presario CQ5300F Desktop Computer. According to the specs, this model supports one VGA output via nVidia GeForce 6150SE onboard integrated graphics. This model also has a PCIe x16 graphics card expansion slot which will accept a PCIe x16 graphics card. According to the specs, installing a discrete graphics card in the PCIe x16 slot will disable the onboard integrated graphics.
The graphics card you purchase must support both monitors you wish to use with your computer. Additionally, most retail graphics cards require a 300 watt or greater system power supply. Currently , your computer has a 250 watt power supply and it will need to be replaced. Please consider the Corsair CX430, CX500, or CX600 series of power supplies to meet the new graphics card power requirements.
Alternatively, if this is mostly for word docs, spreadsheets, day trading and light video, you may wish to consider a USB-to-video adapter such as the eVGA UV Plus+ UV39 or one of the many other adapters on the market.

  • How disable external display

How can i disable my external display on my Imac? I use the second output for my ntsc TV, but sometimes i dont use it. If its connected, sometime apps put windows on the second display and its annoying. How can I s/w disable the external display?

    Joe,
The Mac "remembers" where windows are, and usually will not move them back if you disconnect your external display.
Generally what I do if I launch and app and can't see its window (because its on the non-existent external display) is click the "Window" menu, then click "Zoom". This usually brings it back to the main display.

  • Disable Second Monitor Mac Pro

I have a nice new Mac Pro system with the standard Nvidia 7300 Video card. I connected a second dipslay to it today to watch some videos on my 32" HDTV. However I noticed that the video really suffers when both displays are active in extend mode. The video stutters and I encounter a lot of "image slicing" that is really distracting. I found that if I watch the videos in mirror mode everything is fine. Here comes the question is there a way to disable the seond display when I am not using it? I used to do this all of the itme on my Windows box I could just click disable secondary display and it would turn off and I wold be back to a single monitor config without manually unplugging the seond monitor. Anyone got any ideas?

According to this thread, SwitchResX allows you to do exactly what you're looking for.  It's right on the webpage:
You can disable or deactivate a monitor without having to physically unplug it, allowing you to use a laptop in clamshell mode with external monitor, keyboard and mouse

  • W700ds Second Display backlight brightness

Is there any way to adjust the brightness of second display on the W700ds?
When I got the laptop I'm not sure if it was working or not, now I have the laptop for 2 weeks and I removed many apps from startup and services (when I'm not using raid I don't want the programs to be running all the time, this way I disabled lot of system tray application which were running on default)
And now I'm pressing FN + HOME and END to change backlight but the second display is working on maximum all the time.
I would be very thankful for any information about adjusting the backlight of the secondary display.

im runnin win 7 64bit with lenovo nvidia driver with the hotkeys driver installed, and i can adjust the brightness of the secondary lcd, using Fn HOME-END both brightness on the first lcd and secondary lcd changes.
im guessing your missing the hotkeys/onscreen display driver. i used the auto driver installation its called "ThinkVantage System Update"  and select the onscreen display/hotkeys or whatever its called

  • Using only the second display...

Is it possible to only use a second display connected to the dvi, while disabling the main display on the laptop?

Not true brother. Simply open back up the screen once you have established the connection with your external monitor and its native resolutions, and BINGO you can us the keyboard to type and the laptop screen will not turn on. In fact you can use all of the functiions of the laptop without the laptop screen truning on. Try it.

  • Msi big bang xpower2 - only boots for 10 seconds, displays error b7

    Hey guys,
As the title states. I am getting 'b7' on the error display which i read somewhere means 'no input devices detected', can someone confirm this? I have tried turning on the PC with 1 GPU, 2 GPU, and no GPU in different configurations but I get the same error each time. It just boots for 10 seconds, displays 'b7' and then restarts and does it all over again. Help would be massively appreciated as I need this PC for work :(

I know I can go back to system preferences and swap my output back manually, but it is getting to be really inconvienient. Thoughts?

  • Using second display via eMac's mini-DVI to VGA adaptor

    Hi,
I've got a 19inch widescreen display from Acer, model no. AL1916W. I have apple's mini-DVI to VGA adaptor and have connected the second display to the point where it mirrors the screen on my eMac, however I don't want it to do this.
What I had intended is that the second display would act as an extension of my eMacs screen, so I can drag windows across for extra space. Is this possible with the eMac?
Put more specifically, I want to be able to put logic's main (arrange) window on the Acer widescreen, and then have whatever else on the eMacs screen? Is there a workaround to do this?
    help much appreciated,
    Toby

    Hi,
It's funny you should send me that link, I actually found that a couple of hours after posting this and tried it. It worked perfectly, I now have the widescreen running in it's native resolution and working as a separate screen which I can drag stuff in and out of. I came back on here to mark the question as 'answered' but I couldn't find how.
    thanks for your help,
    Toby
