Disabling UEFI boot or prioritizing legacy boot in dv6tqe-7000 laptop

Hey guys, I currently have windows 7 on my pavilion laptop. I'm trying to install ubuntu 14.04.1 LTS on it from the cd-rom drive. Unfortunately, the ubuntu installer does not detect my hard drive's windows 7 partition while booting in UEFI mode as Windows 7 was installed in legacy/bios mode.
I want to either disable UEFI booting or to make the bios prioritize BIOS/legacy boot ahead of UEFI so I can correctly install a second OS. Unfortunately, the bios options I see do not seem to allow me to switch to a legacy boot, they only allow me to change the boot priority within each of those modes. Is there any way for me to boot with legacy?
A screenshot of what I see in the boot options menu in the bios is here:  http://imgur.com/aBaZ0Xi
The blue items are the only things that are selectable; the gray/black items cannot be navigated to.

Anyone?

  • Hiw to disable UEFI ???

    Hi,
I have a HP 2000 2312TU laptop with intel pentinum chip with pre-installed windows 8....
After I bought the laptop, I realised that the laptop was slow and was hanging sometimes....
I showed my laptop to the technicians and they said that windows 8 is way too advanced for Intel pentinum chip and cannot support it, so I decided to install windows 7....
So I googled how to downgrade windows 8 to windows 7 and it was a very tedious job...
They are saying that I should disable UEFI and enable the legacy boot in the BIOS...
I can enable the legacy boot but the secure boot option (which I found out is the UEFI option also called as secure boot) is greyed out...
Can anyone help me with this problem..??!!
I desperately need windows 7 to be installed in my laptop...

  • UEFI vs Legacy Boot order

I have disabled the secure boot option and enabled the Legacy boot option which allows me to boot from USB stick. However, UEFI takes precendence over Legacy boot and I don't want that. For a little school project that we are running we want to run the educational OS Sugar on Stick(on a USB stick) to run straight from the stick instead of kids pressing 3-4 different buttons to get to that.
In short, I want to change boot priority from UEFI first to Legacy. Let me know how to do it? Whether its possible or not? If not, then I don't need these 4 laptops that I ordered and I will return the laptops.
    Thanks a lot in advance.
    -Ritesh

I was thinking to delete the "protected" EFI partition, but I am not an expert on that front, so I'll move with caution.
I know it will not load my windows and space will be wasted and so on so forth, but UEFI should not be forced like this. It is for customer's convinient and a standard, but manufacturers have started making it a rule.
My problem still remains unsolved, because I reached the same conclusion. Also, its just f9 and selecting the USB. No need to press ESC. Regardless, thanks all the same.

  • Z77A-GD65 (mostly) unable to boot usb in legacy mode

So I already made a post about this issue over in the BIOS forum back when I assumed it was something to do with the forum flash tool, but upon closer examination I was able to replicate this problem with other bootable usb sticks when I attempted to boot them in legacy mode instead of UEFI mode (and while this is viable for the Windows 8 image usb it isn't for the flash tool since when I try to boot that drive in UEFI mode it hands off to the Windows bootloader).
I am not sure where I'm going wrong here (or where to start) because this behavior doesn't seem entirely consistent and I haven't recognized any pattern in which it occurs. Basically whenever I try to boot a bootable usb device from the efi boot menu in legacy usb mode I'm presented with a black screen with a blinking white cursor in the top left corner. The inconsistency that I describe is that every so often the usb will actually boot, sometimes after only a few seconds of the blinking cursor, sometimes after leaving the screen up for an hour or so, and sometimes even if I leave the screen up overnight it still will not boot (this is what happens the majority of the time, regardless of the time interval).
I've used the "fix my stick" option in the forum tool. I've used the HP utility. Since it can be replicated across multiple usb drives I am fairly certain it isn't a geometry issue and has got something to do with my bios settings or my usb controller itself (although the only other problem I've had regarding usb is my wifi adapter only working properly on a specific port and I believe that to be unrelated).
Obviously something is amiss here. Any settings I should check out? I'm currently running no OC and I'm trying to recover my BIOS A after something went awry with the flash tool (long story as to why I was flashing in the first place, not really worth going through unless prompted...but this issue has been going on since at least early january).

I did have some issues with the ME fw at the beginning of January after a bad M-flash, but I thought I had recovered. After seeing someone with a similar problem (but with more symptoms of bad usb) had success with booting from usb after disabling the sata controller temporarily. So I've been doing that and it seems to work for now, even if it is kind of a roundabout way.

  • UEFI & syslinux - system will not boot without keyboard plugged in

Somewhat of a weird one. I have successfully gotten a UEFI Arch system booting, using the https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Sy … FI_Systems and https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Un … _Interface wiki articles. Speficially, I used "efibootmgr" to install an boot entry on the system, with the "Syslinux" label showing up as a boot option in the motherboard's BIOS/UEFI setup utility. The system boots fine, displays the blue Syslinux menu, and starts the system.
Except if there is no keyboard plugged into the system. In this case, the motherboard startup output displays, and immediately goes to a black screen, indefinitely. Once I plug in a keyboard (USB), the Syslinux menu immediately appears, and the system loads. But a keyboard is REQUIRED to be plugged in. I have disabled the BIOS option to "Wait for F1 on errors", and I have no problem booting MBR/BIOS-based OSes.  I initially felt that the issue was with Syslinux, and specifically that maybe the menu needs a keyboard present, but I tried disabling the menu and using just the "boot :" prompt, and the same problem exists. A black screen, until a keyboard is plugged in, after which "boot :" immediately appears.
The system is a file server in a highly cramped closet at my house, and if I can I'd rather not dedicate a keyboard plugged into it all the time. Is there any way around this? If I could completely and totally disable the Syslinux menu and boot directly to Arch, I'd prefer that, but I'm not finding an immediate way to do that. I know I could potentially have the motherboard load the UEFI partition directly without a boot manager, but the wiki article says that that could cause problems....

  • Lenovo G505s legacy boot problems

Notebook g505s hangs up on booting installed linux kernel by grub2 with legacy boot option in bios. Also hangs up on booting Windows7 by grub2 in legacy boot mode.
Single installation of windows boot's OK.
If used UEFI boot and EFI installation of linux and Windows8 all boot's OK.
    Steps for reproduce:
    1. Enable legacy boot mode in bios
    2a(optional). install windows7
2b. Install Ubuntu or archlinux (MBR disk partitioning)
    3. Reboot for booting from HDD
    4. Select OS for boot.
Also hangs up on boot of installation win7 disk's in UEFI on disk.sys. In legacy mode win7 install disk boot's OK.
Looks like bios legacy boot code not fully implemented.

    hi Zidane,
Since the G505s BIOS properly boots Win7, you're maybe right about the BIOS not properly supporting other boot loaders like Grub 2 in legacy mode but it's a bit early to tell without knowing what's causing the boot failure.
You can try troubleshooting the issue on the GRUB 2's side by checking the following:
    - Boot Repair
    - GRUB 2 Troubleshooting
If you're aiming to dual boot Windows 7 and Ubuntu, try to install Ubuntu via Wubi and see if that works.
In regards to the disk.sys error when installing Win7 in UEFI mode, perhaps you can create a bootable Win7 SP1 UEFI installer try again (with SATA Controller Mode set to AHCI in the BIOS).

  • FM2-A75MA-e35 no legacy boot

Even though I have uefi+legacy options selected in boot options, The options for legacy boot have disappeared from the boot options menu.  Am I missing a bios setting somewhere.  I needed to boot to dos and access the USB drive and attempted bios reset to default.  When I rebooted and set boot for uefi+legacy, the legacy boot options no longer display on the f11 boot menu

Keyboard is Genius KB-110X PS/2 and mouse is Trust Optical Mouse 16591 USB (both were second cheapest in the store). I took the board out of the case, kept there only the CPU, one memory module and VGA connected - nothing, just blank screen. I switched it off, connected keyboard and started the system - '99' in the corner and system froze. So basically the same behavior as with board in case.

  • Boot process freezes when booting from UEFI

Subject says it all.  I followed the grub2/uefi wiki to configure Arch to work with my new motherboard's EFI.  I can boot into grub okay and I can select the entry that boots Arch, but the boot hangs indefinably at the 'loading udev uevents [BUSY]' prompt.  By contrast, if I boot using a 2nd HDD which has grub-bios on it, Arch comes up without a hitch.  I must conclude that booting from UEFI is the problem and would like to fix it.
I moved all logs from /var/log so that the dir is empty hoping to catch something that would give a clue but after a failed boot attempt, mounting the root partition and inspecting /var/log gave no files.

Please check this Install Ubuntu without a CD using UNetbootin.
Also I think this thread is better safed in Linux section of this forum.

  • Is there legacy boot on CB35-B3340?

I have noticed that this Chromebook 2 has partition #12 containing grub efi files.  Does it mean it supports legacy boot?  If so, how can I enable it?

The 64 bit drivers are there, but there have been some installation
issues depending on Windows OS and Apple hardware.  You may
want to post on the Bootcamp forum to get more direct response to
    your issue.
FWIW, at one point, I forget when, I found I needed to manually
open the 64 bit versions of the drivers to install them that were created
on the bootcamp driver install disk (image).  As I recall the was a
64 bit .msi "global" installer but even at that there was an individual
one that needed to be manually installed.
Its been a while since I last did this since I have been doing everything
in Windows virtual machines with Parallels.

  • Cannot access boot menu/ThinkVantage setup/boot from DVD

So I am trying to install W7 from an external DVD drive but I am not able to
    a) Access the boot menu: Immediately after I power on the notebook, the computer boots into Win 8. There is no message displayed "Press enter to interrup booting" (or similar), but the loading-throbbler is shown directly. Other keys don't work either (F1, DEL, F12,...)
    b) Boot from DVD
    c) Access the "ThinkVantage Setup": The manual says I have to enter ThinkVantage Setup and select to install Win 7 there, but I can't find such tool on the computer.

This is from memory, hopefully it's close:
Within Win 8, bring up the charms bar.   Then Settings.  At the bottom is "Change PC Settings" it looks like a title, but it is a link.  Click it.  Select "General" on the left.  Then scroll down the right panel to "Advanced Startup"  select "Restart Now".
Here's where  my memory is a little hazy: either "continue" or "turn off your PC".  On restart you should be able to hit ENTER (or whatever key it is on your machine) to get to BIOS.
You may need to disable Secure Boot and change the boot mode to Legacy or UEFI + Legacy to boot your DVD.
My understanding is that since Win 8 actually hibernates instead of doing a full shutdown as the default, access to BIOS and boot options is disabled.  It's necessary to force a full shutdown before BIOS and boot options can be safely accessed.

  • Changing Boot Order on Dual Boot Windows 8 and Ubuntu

    Hi there,
Recently got a HP Pavilion g6 2213sa which came with Windows 8 (spit!) and this disgusting UEFI BIOS replacement (double spit!).
Anyway, I need to dual boot Ubuntu on my system, so I installed Ubuntu. Normally, on a non UEFI system, a "Grub" bootloader installed by Linux would take over the startup process, and allow you to choose between either Windows 8 or Ubuntu on startup.
However, on this computer, startup is just booting straight to Windows 8 despite the fact that Ubuntu and Grub IS installed.
Now, upon startup, if I press F9, then I get to change the boot-device on a one-time basis. I can either select "OS Boot Manager", which loads Windows 8, or "Ubuntu" which loads the Grub bootloader which allows me to select Windows 8 or Ubuntu.
However, when I press F10 to enter the Bios Setup with the intention of changing the boot order permanently, the Ubuntu option isn't there. Instead it has OS Manager, USB Disk, CD Rom, USB CD Rom and Network Card.
Thanks, HP for, the crappily designed BIOS.
Anyway, can anyone PLEASE provide me a way of changing the boot order so that GRUB is loaded first and NOT this crap Windows 8 rubbish (that I would happily bin if I didn't need it for work).

There is the same problem in HP 2000 laptops (in my case specifically, HP 2000-2D22DX). I did some investigation using trial and error, and this is what I found out:
There is some sort of a "recovery feature" or so that on every boot sets the very first UEFI load option to point to one of the two locations, in this order:
    \EFI\Microsoft\Boot\bootmgfw.efi
    \EFI\Boot\bootx64.efi
This option is displayed as "OS boot Manager" (for the first path) and something akin to "UEFI partition" for the second path, completely ignoring the actual name given to it (when you look at the EFI variables through efibootmgr, you can see that what is displayed as "OS boot Manager" actually is set to the name "Windows Boot Manager"; why anyone would do such renaming is beyond me). If you try to change the boot order so that this slot isn't the first, the UEFI will overwrite the BootOrder variable on next boot and reset it to point to "OS boot Manager" anyway.
By default, both of the paths above contain the same Microsoft bootloader (if you check the md5sum of both, you'll see they match).
So, until HP releases an updated UEFI that allows turning this "feature" off or rearranging boot options through the F10 UEFI setup, this is what you can do to get dual boot with the least amount of hackiness:
In Windows, mount the UEFI partition (mountvol S: /S mounts it as the S: drive) and copy the file \EFI\Microsoft\Boot\bootmgfw.efi to use some other name (for example, I copied it to "\EFI\Microsoft\Boot\bootmgfw.efi~", but you can change the name to anything else).
In the Windows command prompt, update the Windows UEFI entry to point to the new name: bcdedit /set {bootmgr} path \EFI\Microsoft\Boot\bootmgfw.efi~ (adapt to your set name accordingly).
Optionally, change the name of the Windows boot loader so that you would be certain that it points to the new file location: bcdedit /set {bootmgr} description "Fixed Windows path"
Install the other OS. In my case the bootloader was installed into \EFI\opensuse\grubx64.efi.
Delete the two files, \EFI\Microsoft\Boot\bootmgfw.efi and \EFI\Boot\bootx64.efi.
Use efibootmgr to delete the "OS boot Manager" entry: sudo efibootmgr -b 0000 -B
Set the new OS bootloader to be the default bootloader by using efibootmgr with the -o option. In my case, I had an entry called "opensuse" in slot Boot0001 and the updated path Windows entry in slot Boot0002, so I had to do sudo efibootmgr -o 0001,0002
Update GRUB to point the Windows entry to your renamed file (you'll have to create a new file in /etc/grub.d and rerun grub-mkconfig).
And that's it, now the UEFI will boot GRUB by default (it won't regenerate the "OS boot Manager" entry since it won't be able to find either of the two hardcoded paths and will "fall back" to properly reading the BootOrder variable), and the F9 menu will still allow choosing to boot Windows directly.

  • System won't boot from Windiws XP boot disk after setting up RAID 0 array???

After connecting my two Western Digital Raptor on SATA ports 1 and 2, and finally being able to launch the Bios option ROM "Intel SATA Raid manager" (had some problems associated with an LSI 4i megaRAID adapter in a pci slot), I was able to put the two disks in RAID 0. After exiting the Raid manager, the DMI pool was updated, and I was expecting the computer to boot from the XP installation boot disk in the optical drive. Instead I got the message: "Disc boot failure. Insert system disc and press enter.". This is very strange, as I installed XP earlier with the Raptors functioning as IDE drives without a problem (so IDE was selected in the BIOS for SATA drives instad of SATA as in this case). As a result I am unable to install Windows XP (professional).
    My system configuration:
    Motherboard: Platinum power up edition
    Bios version: W72461MSv7.3
    CPU: Intel Core2Duo 6700
Memory: Corsair, 2 GB in matched pair DDR 2, now on 2 volts
Harddrives: 2 western digital raptors of 150 GB in RAID 0
Optical drives: LITE-ON DVD-rewriter and reader from same brand (also DVD)
    PSU: Corsair 620 Watt
Now removed: LSI Megaraid 4i adapter (pci) with 4 Samsung spinpoint harddrives of 4 in raid 5
    XP professional
Boot sequence: CDROM, floppy and harddisk in this order
    BIOS settings:
    USB keybooard and mouse disabled
JMB361 option rom disabled (not using it)
Onboard lan boot rom disabled (not using it)
    Sata mode set to RAID
All other settings "optimal" using F7 in BIOS
Usinf F11 during startup doesn't help: the CDROM is not displayed in SATA mode, only floppy and harddisk.
Using Microsoft XP professional boot floppy's did'nt help either. System restarted after loading first floppy (ther are 6 in total), and no result.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated...
