Disabling wifi on time capsule

Hi all,
I'd like to disable the wifi on my time capsule, so I can back up via ethernet instead (the back ups are way way too slow - taking weeks each time, then aborting if the wifi goes down). Anyone know how to do this?
FYI. My imac is upstairs with the time capsule and a wireless printer. The wifi router is a BT hub downstairs.
Any takers?

Hi,
Try this.....
AirPort Utility > Your TC > Manual Setup > Wireless > Wireless mode

  • Je n'arrive pas à connecter ma wii au wifi de time capsule

    Bonjour,
Le cryptage wifi de time capsule ne me permet pas de connecter ma wii.
Je dois donc activer le wifi de ma freebox qui porte le même SSID que celui de time capsule pour que ma wii se connecte au réseau.
    Est ce normal?
    Merci

  • Want my DVR to use wifi from Time Capsule

We have two wireless networks in our house which seems stupid.  Until now, we've shrugged it off and ignored the wifi created by the fios router and use a wired Time Capsule to create a wifi network that we use.  Now, there's a new feature where we could watch tv in other rooms on our iphone, ipads, etc.  That's great except the TV is on the wifi that came with the FIOS router instead of the wifi the rest of us in the house are using.
So, I googled about it to see what I could do to combine the networks.  It turns out you cannot extend the fios wifi with the Time Capsule because the Apple Airport devices have features for extending networks that the fios wifi doesn't have.  I found I could turn off the fios wifi but then the DVR wouldn't have an internet connection.  So, I thought, I'll change the DVR ot use the Time Capsule wifi, which I'd prefer because we want to keep that network.  I checked the DVR and found the home network settings -- and it turned out to be a place where you can see the settings, but you can't change the settings there, but there has to be a way to set it up somewhere, no?
Ideally, I'd turn off the FIOS wifi and change the DVR over to use our existing home network.  At the moment, we will have to switch networks, depending on what we want to do.  We use the Time Capsule for backups, to share files, for airtunes, etc.  It also extends thru the entire house whereas the FIOS one doesn't.  If we wanted to use the new features to watch programs from ipads, etc, we'd have to switch them over to the other network while we did.  It's just a bit of a pain.
    Any ideas? Thanks!

Many folks have two or more wireless networks in a single dwelling (including me).  It doesn't seem stupid to me and if there's a problem, one or both wireless networks can be disabled in the router or Time Capsule settings.

Maybe it's just a terminology issue, but none of the Verizon STBs or DVRs has wireless capability.  Presently these devices only connect to the network using coax, although this may change in the future.

No.  As in my earlier comment, DVRs and STBs connect to the network via coax and are fed IP addresses via the FiOS router.  That's how they get Guide data, VOD, etc.

The DVR will always connect to the network via the FiOS router.  However there is nothing to stop you from disabling the wireless radio in the FiOS router, and having all your wireless devices (but definitely not your DVRs or STBs) connect to your preferred wireless network.  You can use whatever security features, SSIDs, and passwords you desire on the alternate device, and have all your portable devices connect there.
I hope this is clear, so please review the above and come back with further questions if necessary.  Good luck.

  • Can i turn off wifi on time capsule?

Trying to limit my kid's inline time, is there a way to control the wifi on my time capsule?
    thank you

You have at least two methods:
    Disable the wireless radios, or
Use Timed Access Control to limit the times certain devices (by their MAC addresses) have access to the TC itself.

  • Iphone wont connect to wifi on time capsule?

I have a time capsule connected to a BT Infinity Hub and I have disabled wifi on the hub and set up a private network on the time capsule. My daughters laptop, ipad and my ipad can connect to the network but 2 x iphone 4 and 1 x iphone 4s cannot. They can see the network, they get the password prompt but when connecting they get the error message unable to join the network. Does anyone have any ideas?

After trawling through websites I have been able to fix the problem and now my iphones are connected. In the airport utility settings choose wireless tab, wireless options button and change the channel to the highest setting. for me this was 13 and hey presto connection made.

  • Cannot extend wifi from Time Capsule

    Hi all
I have a time capsule (TC) in bridge mode connected to a livebox router. Internet access is fine, wirelessly and wired from the TC. I have disabled the wireless from the livebox router, to keep things simple.
I was hoping to extend the wifi through the house, using 2 airport expresses (AEXS), one as a relay, one as a remote.
I have ticked create wireless network in airport utility, on the TC, and extend wireless network on the AEXS, but cannot get the network propagated from the AEXS. The AEXS's are set to pick up the lower frequency channel from the TC, and I understand that this has a longer range than the 5 GHz band.
I also have broadband running through the mains circuit (we call this homeplug in the UK) but connecting the AEXS to the homeplug ethernet socket does not work either.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance
    Peter

Here's how to do what you want with the furthest Express (AX):
You may be able to simply change some settings on the AX, or if that is not possible, you'll need to hold the reset button in on the device until you see the amber light begin to flash more quickly.
I prefer to setup devices by connecting an ethernet cable from the Mac directly to the device...the AX in this case, but you can also configure using wireless only if you prefer.
On the AX, Open AirPort Utility - Click Manual Setup
Click the Wireless tab below the row of icons. Your setup should look like this:
Wireless Mode = Create a wireless network
Wireless Network Name = Exact same name as your Time Capsule (TC) network
Radio Mode = Probably 802.11n (802.11b/g compatible) would be a good choice here, but you could choose 802.11n 5 GHz if all of your devices are capable of connecting to 5 GHz.
    Channel = Automatic
Wireless Security = Exact same setting as your TC
Wireless Password = Same setting as your TC network
    Confirm Password
    Click the Internet icon
    Connect Using = Ethernet
Connection Sharing = Off (Bridge Mode)
Update to save settings. This will provide you with extended wireless coverage and devices will be able to stay on the same wireless network as they move around and connect to the access point with the strongest signal.

  • Slow wifi on time capsule - 1st generation

Connection 802.11 N -    Cox ISP -- I am getting 98mb down directly out of the cable modem.  However on WIFI my speed is cut nearly in one-half -- 54 mb down.  I have reset the time capsule (version 1).  I checked on 2 MacBook Pros (10.6.8) and both have the same result.
The specs on 802.11 N call for up to 150 MB speed ---- is 54Mb all that this is capable off?
    Thank You,
    Alex

The first thought that comes to mind is that a 1st Gen Time Capsule is at least 5 years old and possibly almost 7 , so it is amazing that it is still operating at all. In general this model suffered from power supply issues.
The power supply on this version of the Time Capsule is likely not putting out anywhere near the voltage that it did when it was younger, so that would be a logical reason to suspect that the WiFi signal has weakened significantly.
Here, I am assuming that you have the Radio Mode on the Time Capsule set to the factory default setting of 802.11n/g/b. If you are not sure about this, post back for more instructions.
To test the Time Capsule, locate your laptop about 10-12 feet, or 3-4 meters from the Time Capsule with clear line of sight to the Time Capsule and run a few more speed checks. If the Time Capsule continues to deliver in the 50 Mbps range, that is all that it can do.

  • Use old AiportExtreme as relay to extend WIFI from Time Capsule

    Hi
I have an 24' 3.06 iMac running on Leopard and it is WIFI networked through a brand new dual band Time Capsule 1TB (TC). The setting up worked fine using the updated AriPort Utilities (APU) coming with the time capsule.
I also have an Old iMac 17' which is for the time being ethernet networked to the TC.
I would like now to move my old mac to another room. Unfortunately it has no Airport card so I would like to use my old UFO shaped Base Station AirPort Extreme (BSAPE), that I was using happily last week as my WIFI hub. My plan is to have it as a relay station to pick up the network from the TC, extend the signal to the other side of the house for my iPod and connect the Old G4 to it via ethernet connection. The (BSAPE) got reset using a pen at the back, and the APU has recognised it as a base station with a six didgit alphanumeriacl code! Ther is a orange light in fornt of the BSAPE icon. So far so good.
I tried then to set it up as a relay, first AU asked me to swap device. I did so and tried to reset the base station. Once all done the TC started blinking was blinking. What did go wrong? Is there a guide I could use to get it working. The TC is in bridge mode.
    Thank you for your help
    N

    Welcome to the discussions!
You will need to configure both the Time Capsule and AirPort Extreme to participate in a WDS (Wireless Distribution System). The Time Capsule will be configured as a base station and the AirPort Extreme will be configured as a remote, not a relay. A relay is a device located between a base station and a remote. So, you would need a minimum of 3 devices in a WDS to configure a relay.
There is a step by step guide on pages 42-43 in the Airport Networks Guide for configuring a WDS.

  • Best configuration to extend wifi with Time Capsule & Airport Express

In my house I have a Fritzbox wifi router on the ground floor as my primary internet access.  I have an ethernet cable going to the 3rd floor study where the Fritzbox signal is relatively weak.  I purchased a Time Capsule as a backup device, but also wanted to extend the Fritzbox wifi network by plugging the ethernet cable in to the TC.  I was not successful in extending the network, so I had to create a new network.  When moving from downstairs to upstairs, my iphone keeps the connection to the (now weak) wifi network and I have to manually change to the (stronger) TC wifi network.
Additionally, I used to be able to successfully extend the downstairs wifi using my Airport Express (and also managed to have my speakers plugged into this for wireless usage), but do not want to additionally complicate my set-up.
So, what is the best way to connect the following equipment, ideally with the same network name, to ensure I always use the strongrst signal automatically:
Third floor:          iMac,    Macbook,   Time Capsule,  Airport Express
Ethernet cable from ground floor to 3rd floor
Ground floor:     Fritzbox wifi connected to internet

You must configure the Bridge Mode setting as the very last step before you Update the settings, otherwise the setting will change automatically.
In other words, you can change the setting to Bridge Mode, but if you make any other changes before you click Update, the Bridge Mode setting will not take effect.
Or, if you see any error messages about DHCP conflicts or Double NAT....the AirPort is not in Bridge Mode...even though you might think it is. Check the settings again.
will I still be able to set up an additional 5GHz network in parallel?
    Yes

  • Update time capsule, since ipod not connect wifi to time capsule

    Hello,
Since I update my Time Capsule(7.5.1), I cannont connect my ipod touch to wifi time Capsule.
message ipod is : impossible de rejoindre le réseau RES_Didier
My iMac is connected, my PC Windows is connected ans my Apple TV to.
    Only my ipod cannot connect.
But, if i connect my ipod to an other wifi network it is ok.
That is only with my time capsule that I cannot connect wifi!!
Do you know why ? can you help me ? (sorry my english is not very good)
    Thanks
    Didier

Did you upgrade install Mavericks? I think this can lead to all kinds of issues.. clean install the OS is the only way.
Do a full factory reset of the TC..
Use all SMB names.. that is short, no spaces and pure alphanumeric.
I strongly recommend when you have trouble.. even different names for 2.4ghz and 5ghz. So you can keep track of where the issue is.
Also use ethernet.. if you have not got ethernet port, buy a Thunderbolt to ethernet (much the preferred) or USB to ethernet.. if thunderbolt is missing or used.
Open network utility on your computer and find the listing for the TC.
    ie scan via netstat.
Make sure you have ipv6 turned on to link local.. this is now essential.
Use the IP address if it is static rather than name.. and try it in full network isolation by ethernet.
So Go .. Connect to server.
    AFP://10.0.1.1 (at default IP)
The default password is public.. you will need to type in a password.
If it fails the TC could be faulty.
Use ping via the terminal to make sure the network is working.

I heard about potential wifi danger. Are you sure that when there is no client, the wifi stops difusing the signal ?
You are reading the normal sort of rubbish that flat earthers produce against every new technology.
I don't want to start a new thread about this.. but wifi produces so little signal when it is transmitting that cosmic rays will far exceed your exposure.. so are you going to go and live in a cave??
The signal from the TC when there is no actual data transfer is merely polling. It will do you no harm.. nor will full 100% transmission.. except in the flat earthers view.

  • Disabling spotlight for Time Capsule

    Hi,
I need to disable (please do not ask the reason, I just need) indexing for backups on the Time Capsule. I know that the help on Spotlight says Time Machine needs spotlight bla bla... and, it can't disable indexing for this. I just don't beleive it, because when I disable spotlight for good with the following command:
    sudo launchctl unload -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.metadata.mds.plist
time machine continues to function just fine. Everything seems perfect as far as the time machine is concerned. However, other apps (like Mail) which relies on spotlight for searching forced me to reenable the spotlight (with the following command) with tears in my eyes:
    sudo launchctl load -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.metadata.mds.plist
So, please help me to find a workaround for disabling spotlight/indexing just for time machine.
By the way I tried the following methods without any success, so do not bother to recommend them:
    1) Including TM volume and/or Backup directory in the TM volume to the privacy list of Spotlight
    2) sudo mdutil -i off /Volumes/VolumeName and sudo mdutil -E /VolumeName
    3) Erased .Spotlight-V100
    4) touch .metadata_never_index in the root and/ot Backup directory of time machine volume
    5) creating a dummy file named  .Spotlight-V100
    [rebooted in all instances...]
    PLEASE HELP

So, you've read through the FAQs and couldn't find a solution, eh? Sorry, but I don't use TM nor do I muck with CLI commands that I don't fully comprehend. You'll have to wait for someone more knowledgeable to pop in.

  • Force macbook air (2012) to use only 5ghz wifi of time capsule?

    Hello!
Is it possible to force the macbook to use only the 5 ghz band of the time capsule wifi?
Otherwise it is loosing lots of speed while switching between the 2.4 and 5 ghz.
(There are approx. 20 other hotsports using the 2.4 ghz band around here...)
    Thx in advance!

I would suggest that you configure the Time Capsule to provide a separate name for the 5 GHz network, and then "point" your MacBook at that network.
Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilitiies > AirPort Utility
Click on the Time Capsule icon
    Click Edit
Click the Wireless tab the top of the next window
Click Wireless Options at the bottom of the window
Enter a check mark next to 5 GHz Network Name  (this will add "5 GHz" to the name of the network)
    Click Save
    Click Update
Then, make sure that your Mac is set to connect to the "5GHz" network as a priority
Open System Preferences (gear icon on the dock)
    Click WiFi on the left
Click Advanced at the lower right
Make sure your 5 GHz network is at the top of the list. If not, drag it there
    Click OK
    Click Apply

  • New Time capsule not connecting to wifi, New Time capsule not connecting to wifi

I just got a 2T time capsule, and it picked it up on the wifi the first time, and I went through and clicked what I wanted for it, but now it's not getting picked up on the wifi.  It's about as useful as a brick right now.
I'm on an imac and I just want to use it for backup, and not a router.  I want to do half for time machine backup, and then half for movie files to access from the time Capsule on my iMac.

Are you using join a wireless network on the TC?? This is a mess..
Please describe the whole existing networking.. and how you are trying to fit the TC into it.

  • Wifi on time capsule not working!

I have a 500g time capsule that i use mainly as a router and the WiFi isn't working. It is connected to the modem in the kitchen along with my moms computer which is running Windows Vista. I connect to it on my iMac 24' with Mac OS X 10.5.7. I was working fine yesterday and this morning, but all of a sudden the connection disappeared. Ive tried restarting my computer, disconnecting the modem, and the TC. Turning both off. Every time I restart the TC the connection will show up my iMac and I try to connect and it says connection timed out and then the connection disappears again.
If anyone has any idea what to do *plz help!!*

Any chance someone was using the microwave oven in the kitchen? Microwaves are a prime source of WiFi interference in most households along with cordless phones.
Is there any way that the TC could be positioned away from the kitchen area?
Assuming the microwave is not the cause of the difficulties, can you temporarily connect an ethernet cable from your Mac to one of the LAN ports on the TC? You could try this wireless, but may not be able to connect.
Download iStumbler, www.istumbler.net and open the program to get a look at the signal strength and noise on your wireless network. The program will also display other wireless networks in your area which may be interfering with your network.
Not all networks will be displayed as most modern routers allow users the feature of "hiding" their networks so they cannot be seen. So, it's very possible that another network that you cannot identify may be interfering with your wireless.
Specifically, look for other networks that may be using the same channel or a close adjacent channel as your wireless. If you find this to be the case, proceed as follows:
Open Airport Utility and click on Manual Setup. Click the Wireless tab below the icons to display. Look for your Channel setting and change it to a value that is as far away as possible from other networks. Channels 1-11 are available on most wireless networks, so if you are in a dense area, it may be difficult to find the best settings.
