Disappeared photos in book

Hello,
When I first create a book from an album, I can work on it and make changes. However, if I quit iPhoto and want to come back to the project for further editing (it would be a 200+ photo book), the photos and layout of the pages don't show on the editing screen, even if the name of the book and the number of photos in the boob still show on the left side. On the title of the editing screen, it shows the title of the project and 0 as the number of pictures.
I am a novice there so your kind help would be greatly appreciated.
Many thanks,
Marc

Try this:  launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and create a new, test library.  Import some photos, create a test book, open and close iPhoto a couple of times and check to see if the same problem persists.
If the problem does not exist in the test library your old library is damaged.  In that case make a temporary, duplicate copy of the library and apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Select the options identified in the screenshot.
Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • More and more photos progressively disappearing from the Book

    Hi,
Please help me! I've invested a ton of time into this book and am hoping that someone can have a fix instead of me doing the book over. I've bought Apeture for the next time I do one, but please, please tell me there is something that can be done to fix this!
I uploaded about 700 photos to my library. Some of the photos came from the same camera and thus had the same names. I assumed this would be okay as I figured that iPhoto would append something to the name/not use the file name as the key/or however this thing works. I've also posted this as a bug and have tried all the things the genius bar people told me to do/had them do some of the things for me, though this didn't help.
Basically, after importing the photos, I put them in an album, sorted them, and deleted some of them, then I made a Book with about 170 photos in it, about 60 pages long, with several intro pages in there. During this process, I weeded out more photos from the book - I started out with more pictures then 170 and I got down to 170 by looking to see which look nicer in the layout and deleting the ones that were not as nice, just from the book, not from the album. I've also emptied my trash since then, both in iPhoto and in the trash on the macbookpro, to make room for the back up library later, to try to fix the problem as below.
    Symptoms:
    1. Thumbnail images in Book above page display when in page mode not updating the text on intro pages for days on end, despite a restart of the app, computer, rebuilding library, etc.
    2. Pictures are progressively disappearing from my Book
Pages not updating - Thumbnail shows a page filled with pictures when in page mode, but when you are looking at the page itself, below the thumbnails, the picture is missing
    3. The pictures in the thumbnails and the pictures on the pages when in page mode went missing - in both places
    4. When you try to drag a picture that has disappeared into the book from the album, it "bounces back" - thinks that it's already in there. When you make a duplicate, you can drag the duplicate in (and this has been my pathetic workaround, which I am hoping not to do if you have something better!) And in any case, this is a bug and you should be able to replicate it by uploading pics with the same name, then moving some into the trash with the same name but a different photo then those in the book.
Anyway, I think that what's happening is that the Book is "confused" and thinks that the pictures deleted have been moved to the trash, when they really have not, they just have the same name. Somehow, the book is possibly ignoring the _copy that it's supposed to have in the name. Good grief! Help!

    Ben:
    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
Thumbnail shows a page filled with pictures when in page mode, but when you are looking at the page itself, below the thumbnails, the picture is missing
What do you see if you try to view one of those "missing" image in the main library in the edit mode? Do you see a blank window with an exclamation mark in the middle?
If that's the case, that means that iPhoto has lost the link to the original file. Since you've rebuild the library and that didn't bring them back, I'm afraid your only option is to start over with a new library and import the original files from the old one as follows:
Creating a new library while preserving the rolls from the original.
Move the existing library folder to the desktop.
Launch iPhoto and, when asked, select the option to create a new library.
Drag the Originals folder from the desktop into the open iPhoto window.
This will create a new library with the same rolls as the original library. However dates on the rolls may be different but can be edited as you would the roll title.
Once this is completed you can delete the Originals folder from the desktop and the iPhoto Llibrary folder. If desired, you can keep the older library folder to try other fixes on it.
In the future I recommend you make a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto file after each import and after doing a lot of editing and organizing in the library. Then if you experience a similar crash all you need to do is replace the damaged database file with the backup copy and you'll be back to the same place in the library as when you make the backup. See the tip at the end of my signature.
Hint: I create a separate library for each book that I create using iPhoto Library Manager. Then, like you, I put all of the photos I think I want into an album in my primary library and copy it to the book library with iPLM. I can add more at a later date the same way if necessary.
When the book is complete, ordered and delivered I burn that book library folder intact to a CD in the Finder. This gives me an archived copy of the library that I can use at a later date to order another exact copy of the book regardless of what I do to my primary library.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

Why do you think that? You can create printed Books in Aperture with similar themes as in iPhoto, and with more options to create custom themes on your own.
See this page - http://www.apple.com/aperture/what-is.html - scroll down to see the example books.
But if you prefer the iPhoto themes and layout, you can open your Aperture library in iPhoto, if you have both the current version of iPhoto and Aperture. Simply use the command "File > Open Library in iPhoto" and you can create your book in iPhoto.
And switch back to Aperture by using the command "File > Open Library in  Aperture".

Anyone has print out the iPhoto album book by apple after finish editing? May I check is the quality good? I have compiled my photo album book , choosen hard cover option , 100 pages , estimated cost is US150. Not sure worth to print out or not?

All I can say is the books I've created as gifts to my children for their children were received with absolute joy and appreciation (each book chronicled in pictures  the first year of each grandchild's life). Granted the sentimental factor had a lot to do with the recipient's enjoyment of the book but they were spetacular. The book with its glossy dust cover is a very impressinve way to present your photos.
As Larry has pointed out so many have posted here that they were very satisfried with their book and Apple is very good about correcting problems.
To make sure there are no errors in the book before you order preview the book as described in this Apple document: iPhoto '11: Preview a book, card, or calendar before you order or print it. If the PDF file shows no errors, either in text typos (my biggest problem) or in missing photos, etc., the printed book will be error free.

  • Are there any apps that allow you to dial direct from tapping a photo such as a photo phone book?

How could I put this in as a feature request? Should I try to find the existing bug in bugzilla and comment on that, or should I open a new bug? I would really love to see this happen, I think it is a worthwhile and usefult feature.
I tried searching bugzilla for a bit but I could not find the relevant bug. If you know it, please link to it.

Connect the iPad to your computer then launch iTunes.
Select the iPad under Devices left side of the iTunes window.
You can sync photos and PDF files from the Photos and Books tabs in the menu.

  • IPhoto 08 problem:  photos in book are deleted when moved to photo toolbar

When I move a photo from one of the pages in the photo book back to the photo tool bar (or whatever it is called) at the top of the page the photo disappears rather than staying there. If I go to edit to undo the action it returns to the page vs returning to the tool bar. I've restarted iPhoto and rebuilt the iPhoto thumbnails without success. I also tried to delete the preference files (com.apple.iphoto.plist) without success as when I relaunched iPhoto it didn't dislpay my photo's. I was able to restore iPhoto by dragging the original plist back to the preference files.
    Thanks for any suggestions.

Thanks for the suggestions. I was able to find the photos after an extensive search. I checked and they are being placed "manually" rather than by date so they should be staying where I placed them when removing them from the books page. One other odd thing is that if I try to select them for deletion from the strip above the book page they simply disappear rather than being outlined but they then magically reappear when I try to select another photo for deletion. unless someone has experienced the same issue it looks like I'll be taking advantage of my Applecare agreement.

  • Help with disappearing photos

Loaded my twins 3rd B-Day photos, all was going well.   Sorting them when all of the sudden a handful disappeared.  I see them at the bottom and when you look at a complete album on the screen, but when I try to click and just look at a single picture, a bunch of them show up with a black screen and a triangle with a ! sign.  No clue what happened and when try to share, these select photos will not 'share'.  They are not in the trash bin either.  Again, the mystery is that I see the photos at the bottom of the screen and when multiple photos are showing the screen.  HELP?????

The ! turns up when iPhoto loses the connection between the thumbnail in the iPhoto Window and the file it represents.
What version of iPhoto? Assuming 09 or later
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

  • Disappearing photos

I am trying to import photos into iphoto. If I click on the photo which is on a dvd-r it disappears. If I click on the folder a message appears which basically states iphoto can't import the jpg file. Drag the image files to the desktop first. Then import from there.

  • Dodging and burning photo in book?

I do my dodge and burn and extra little things on a photo already placed in a book. This creates a new copy of the master. I notice that it is still the old version in the actual book. I can't drag the copy up to replace the old unretouched photo ... it says something about being 'stacked'. I can't just 'unstack' because the new version disappears.
Not is an easy find in the manual. Any help would be most appreciated.
    Ben

Since you seem not to get those lines when changing the duplicated layer's
mode to screen, your brush settings could be the cause.
    Try something like this:
    1. Duplicate the layer and change the layer's blending mode to screen.
    2. Go to Layer>Layer Mask>Hide All
    3. Use the brush tool with a soft round brush and paint with white on the areas you want to
lighten.  (check that no dynamics in the brush panel are checked)
    4. Use the layer's opacity setting to vary the effect after painting.

  • Perplexing iPhoto issue - disappearing photos.

Currently have iPhoto 9.2.3, but also have a few other versions as a result of a so-called computer tech trying to resolve my problem. Which is, most of my photos disappeared. I see gray screen with white borders but no photos. Unless, I scroll quickly throught the gray screen. Then, I can glimpse the photos, but as soon as I stop scrolling the photos are gone.
What is going on here? How can I recapture my photos?

Apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
2 - run Option #4 to rebuild the database.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 - click on the Add Library button and select the library you want to add in the selection window..
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the Library ➙ Rebuild Library menu option.
4 - In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments.  However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

To rebuild the iPhoto library with the First Aid tools:
Make a backup copy of the iPhoto Library.
Try to launch into the First Aid Tools  by holding down the key combination option-command ⌥⌘ and clicking the iPhoto icon to launch iPhoto.
Keep the two buttons firmly held down, until you are seeing the First Aid panel.
    Then select "Rebuild database".

  • Problem with photos making book in iPhoto

I'm making a book on iPhoto and two of the pix indicate they have already been used, but they have not. Can't delete them (because there's a tick mark beside them) but can't use them either. Help?

    What is your iPhoto version?
In iPhoto '11 you can use the same photo over and over again, even if it has a checkmark, that it has been used. For example - the same photo used six times:
When you move the cursor directly onto the checkmark in the photos list, the checkmark will change into an arrow. If you click the arrow, it will take you to the page with the photo. Can you find this way, where the photo has been used?

    Hi
I'm making up a book in "formal" theme - but can't find big enough templates for a single almost full page landscape format. Is there a way to do this? I found the layout inspector but can only move the photos up and down etc.

    Hi Thomas
I can resize on Edit layout - thanks. But not with the book I first tried! This is odd indeed. The book is "Formal". The handles appear, but no movement. Yet its not a problem with other books I tried.
Perhaps a bug in my software?
